Anyone else like Dying Fetus?

dUuEk8O.jpg

It's their only CD I own though. This and Cannibal Corpse's Torture are my favorites from last year, though admittedly I didn't listen to much from 2012.

So what does 2013 have in store for us? What I know of so far

January:
Fen - Dustwalker (post-rock/shoegaze influenced atmospheric BM)
Cult of Luna - Vertikal (sludge)

March:
Kvelertak - Meir (hardcore with some BM influences)

TBA
Ghost - Infestissumam (hard rock/heavy metal)

And my most anticipated:
The Monolith Deathcult - Tetragrammaton (death metal)

It's almost been 5 years since their excellent Triumvirate, a brilliant mix of (brutal) death metal with symphonic, electronic and industrial influences. The end result is just amazingly awesome, with Wrath of the Ba'ath, Kindertodeslied and Master of the Bryansk Forests being my favourites. The release date along with all the themes of the songs will be announced this week. Some of the themes: Transformers, the Rote Armee Fraktion and human wave attacks during the Iran-Iraq war.

Oh, and here's my LastFM profile if anyone wants to add me: http://www.last.fm/user/GON4PP

I don't know if there are any Cult of Luna fans here, but Invisible Oranges is streaming the whole of 'Vertikal':

For those not in the know, I guess you could compare them to a band like Isis, maybe? I dunno; but these guys consistently put out great material and this album is no exception imho. Enjoy!

Awesome. They have failed to dissapoint me. I think they're leagues better than Isis. Last album was fucking great.

Just read a small news atricle in Science about a group in Germany who's studying metal vocalists. Underlined some of my favourite parts.

Let Me Hear You Scream

The growls and screams of hardcore/metal bands like Bitterness Exhumed (pictured) sound painful, but those vocal pyrotechnics might be less damaging to the singer than you might expect. There's not much scholarly work on what happens in the throats of heavy metal singers when they perform, says musicologist Marcus Erbe of the University of Cologne in Germany. So Erbe, who has been doing field work in the heavy metal, death metal, and hardcore band scene in Germany for several years, teamed up with linguist Sven Grawunder of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig and ear, nose, and throat physician Michael Fuchs of the Leipzig University School of Medicine to investigate.

The researchers used an endoscope to make videos of vocalists emitting growls, screams, and other standard-fare sounds of the genre. Initial results from six participants indicate that the performers—whose range rivals that of classical opera singers—produce their characteristic sounds with not only the true vocal folds but also with the vestibular folds and aryepiglottic folds, which are located higher in the larynx. And part of the desired sound comes from vibrating mucus in the singers' throats—which might also help protect their voices. Several participants have voice-intensive day jobs as counselors or teachers, but none reported any voice problems, Fuchs says. Grawunder also plans to compare the sounds with those found in, for example, unusual consonants in various languages and Tuvan throat singing in Siberia.

Metal performers push the human voice to its limits, says musicologist Michael Custodis of the University of Münster who is not part of the project. To use high-quality scientific methods to study that process “is fantastic.”

Thanks for this.

Man, I have been so out of the loop lately I didn't even know this was coming. And it is actually already released over here! This is the best kind of surprise :V

Anyone order the Blind Guardian big box set? Looks like it's releasing next Friday, so I'm still pondering biting on the $140 price.

I'm tempted to but I'm unclear on what exactly is new about it. Is there much actual new content? Because I already have all their albums and a handful of their singles.

Gonna have a listen, thanks for the link! I've loved COL since The Beyond. They're playing here next month but I can't go see them since I'm dogsitting in another city fml lol. Bad timing. I've seen them live every time they've played here, always good. Plus I used to know their bass player but I've since lost contact with him so it sucks that I can't go and say hi this time. Ah well. At least I get to see Fields of the Nephilim before the damn dogsitting stint. They better be good and better play enough songs from The Nephilim though.

I've been wanting to see Cult of Luna for a while, but it seems like they never make it over here to California. I do have their live DVD for the Eternal Kingdom tour and it's pretty damn intense and claustrophobic with that many members on stage.

Yeah every time I've seen them there seems to be more and more guys on stage :D Maybe they're channeling Slipknot or something.

I raise you with:

Atheist - Mother Man
Roger Patterson (original bass player) wrote all that stuff, but tragically died :(
Tony Choy performed all the bass duties on the album/live though. Followed Patterson's notes perfectly.

Death - Suicide Machine
DiGiorgio is a fucking monster. I knew he was a monster, but not this insane on the Human album because of how poorly the bass was mixed in on that album.
Awesome man. I really like DiGiorgio bass lines, like on this:

or

i don't even like Metallica, but it should've been mandatory for every thrash band in the 80s to have the bass this loud in the mix.

edit: like this:

May 14th!

Blabbermouth.net said:
Dutch extreme metallers THE MONOLITH DEATHCULT will release their fourth full-length album, "Tetragrammaton", on May 14 (one day earlier internationally) via Season Of Mist.

The track listing for the CD is as follows:

01. Gods Amongst Insects
02. H.W.A. (Human Wave Attack)
03. Drugs, Thugs & Machetes
04. Todesnacht von Stammheim
05. S.A.D.M. (Svpreme Avantgarde Death Metal)
06. Qasr Al-Nihaya
07. Aslimu!!! - All Slain Those Who Bring Down Our Highly Respected Symbols To The Lower Status Of The Barren Earth

Says the band: "This vile assault on the fundamental canons of human decency, progress and civilization will take no fewer than 59 minutes and 40 seconds of the precious life you have left on this wretched clump of rock."

According to THE MONOLITH DEATHCULT, the CD's overall lyrical theme will be roughly the same as on "Trivmvirate" and "The White Crematorium" (2005). "But then again," said guitarist/vocalist Michiel Dekker, "who cares about lyrical themes in death metal?"

As on "Trivmvirate", producing duties and Pro Tools wizardry was done by Pascal Altena. Mixing duties were handled by Guido Aalbers.

Cannot fucking wait.

I think DiGiorgio is very underrated, the same way for James Murphy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYxd8WxQIsU

dat intro solo.

I dont think DiGiorgio is underrated at all. He gets lots of praise and is one of the few guys who can do what he does.

James Murphy era was best Obituary. Funny story when i met him at a Testament show during the Gathering tour. By the time Testament was doing the tour, Murphy had been kicked out of Testament, again. We ran into each other on our way in/out and noticed him. He introduced himself as "Yeah, I'm James Murphy. I was in Death, Cancer, Discincarnate, Agent Steel, Konkhra, Testament, Gorguts, etc....." basically he was just naming every single band he used to be in, haha.

The Impaled guys told me while they were recording at his studio in Oakland, that Murphy was one of the most immature persons ever, super clumsy, and a mess to work with. He'd lock himself outside the studio and bands wouldn't be able to record during the booked sessions. He eventually became homeless and slept in his studio, etc. Pretty sad decline to see him go from a superstar session guitar player to his brain tumor :(

Was in Mexico to see my girlfriend. We went and saw Tyr and Ensiferum the night before I left. We went to the hotel on the night before the gig and met the bands. Got pictures and chatted with the dudes from Tyr and only a few from Ensiferum.

So anyway, roll on to the next day and Tyr are up. Heri asks if there are any Irish people in the crowd before adding; "Well there's one at least. Ah, there he is." He manages to see me (with the help of my girlfriend and the beacons that are my pale arms in a Mexican metal crowd) and then they start their cover of Wild Rover. It was a very surreal experience and likely one that won't ever repeat itself. Sure the song was probably already on their setlist but I never knew they had ever covered it.

I was in the lobby and a guy from Venezuela approached me saying I wasn't from around here. It wasn't my hair or skin that gave it away. Nope. My tshirt was of too high a quality to have been from there lol.

Here is me and Sami from Ensiferum a few hours before the gig.
