By the way, I'm almost convinced Bolt Thrower is my favourite death metal band. Which is yours, guys?

Excellent question. Devourment (Crucify the Impure, Fuck Her Head Off) have probably been getting more play time than any other DM band over the past few months. But can't go a week without throwing on some Heinous Killings (Beating Her to Deformity, Skinned Alive in Acid). Joe Wolfe is arguably the finest abstract vocalist in the genre.

I think if I had to pick a single favourite, it has to be Deicide (Dead But Dreaming/When Satan Rules His World/Dead by Dawn). They've put out a ton of garbage over the years, but they somehow maintain relevance on the strength of their first four albums. Plus they've been incredible every time I've seen them live.

I personally think everyone should listen to Immolation. They are by far my favorite death metal band and they just feel criminally underrated despite having a decent following for 20+ years.

I also really like Gorguts, Entombed, Malevolent Creation, and Autopsy. I'm not as big into a lot of older DM bands as I wish I was.

I also like Immolation, but all their albums are too samey for me. I don´t feel that most of their albums add anything that you can´t find on Close to a World Below/Unholy Cult.

MORBID FUCKING ANGEL, Death, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Immolation, Cryptopsy, and Autopsy are a few of my favorites.

Always thought it was a bit odd people lumped Cannibal Corpse into "trailer trash metal", but whatever. I only have their last 3 efforts. They rule.

i've only listened to the early CC stuff, but it's DM, absolutely.

From the top of my head

Intro "1985"
Buried Dreams
Incarnated Solvent Abuse
Carnal Forge
Carneous Cacoffiny
Lavaging Expectorate of Lysergide Composition
Embodiment
Death Certificate
No Love Lost
Inpropagation intro/Symposium of Sickness intro-to-mid song/Pedigree Butchery
Keep on Rotting in the Free World
Edge of Darkness
Genital Grinder
Hepatic Tissue Fermentation II or Pyosified (Still Rotten to the Gore) (not sure)
Reek of Putrefaction
Exhume to Consume

Corporal Jigsore Quandary/Forensic Clinicism/The Sanguine Article mid-to-end/Ruptured in Purulence intro
Heartwork
End "1985"

It's out of order and I think there's more.

IIRC, the played those here as well in 2008. Too bad they don't tend to play more material from the first two albums, as I couldn't care less about the later ones.

As for three favorite DM bands, I'd say Autopsy, early Pungent Stench, and perhaps Aeternus. Although the latter could be considered BM as well.

I just listened to the new Killswitch album, and it felt just as generic as the self-titled album but with Jesse Leach. I'm going to listen to Alive or Just Breathing to get over such averageness.

A year or so all you all did me right with a bunch of killer OG death metal suggestions. I still think we should start compiling master suggestion lists -- like big old playlists for genres and band sound alikes for these occasions. There's so much good taste in the this thread it is a shame to keep it hidden.

Awesome set. I love that Edge of Darkness song, but can see that as a mood killer. Also fucking hate No Love Lost, i wish they stopped playing that one live.

Did they not play any of the new material?

on facebook Jeff said they don't want people's first impression of the new songs to be from shitty youtube vids so I guess they're waiting for the new album to be out before they start playing them live. I think it was supposed to be out by now

My top 3 death metal bands would be Entombed, Carcass and Autopsy.
Not to be a jackass, but that sounds far too jolly for me.

I prefer Strid, Nattevandring. None have thus far been able to recreate the atmosphere, and they pretty much spearheaded the suicidal/depressive BM genre.

EDIT: Here's a recent interesting BM band, Cultes des Ghoules, Vintage Black Magic, and from the yesteryears, Moevet; Untitled IV

Another great band that inspired the DSBM genre is Forgotten Woods. Their first 2 albums are fantastic and they sound pretty different from most DSBM thanks to the big The Cure and Fields of the Nephilim influence.

From their first album "As the Wolves Gather":
Dimension of the Blackest Dark
Through Dark and Forgotten Valleys

From their second album "The Curse of Mankind":
The Starlit Waters / I, the Mountain
The Velvet Room

I'm going to second the recommendation for the new Cultes Des Ghoules album, good stuff.

My favorite from Bolt Thrower https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7ZZy2xbG_A , people don't talk about this album too much for some reason. It's so raw and that ridiculously awesome album art.

People don't speak much of the first album because it really doesn't have the Bolt Thrower "sound" since it was still heavily crust/punk influenced. That familiar Bolt Thrower sound was hinted on Realms of Chaos, but further established on Warmaster...that Andy Whale drum beat, Karl Willets vocals, etc...

I actually find the Peel Sessions with In Battle There Is No Law songs better than the actual first album.

By the sound of it, Deceiver of the Gods will be a lot less melodic than the previous two. Will be very interesting to see what they have come up with!

There is a big controversy in Japan right now about Ozzfest Japan - the lineup is just off the charts bizarre...The Japanese are kind of pissed that the only foreign bands appearing are the first few that were announced (Stone Sour/Slipknot, Tool, Black Sabbath) and as additional announcements were made they were all Japanese bands, and not just Japanese but kind of on the pop rock and punk side of the spectrum and not even close to metal.

So now the final announcement came out today and one of the final bands added to the lineup is...a girl pop band called Momoiro Clover Z. WTF??? Believe it or not there are a lot of metal fans that also like girl pop bands, because basically dudes in Japan love these girl idol age ranges (sigh), but this is a bit extreme and risky...putting a pop band on the stage 10 hours before Slipknot hits it?? Ummm, yeah let us see how that goes. The funny thing is the latest single from Momoiro Clover Z features them wearing spiky masks, so people are joking that is probably the reason they picked them to appear. Other people say maybe the ticket sales were lagging.

They are basically recognized to have more talent than bigger rival AKB48, but still ...

So how many of these bands have had songs on anime title and closing sequences? That's the only way I'd recognize some. Head Phones President (lol at the name) actually sounds good.
