I am having a little problem.

In a metal slump. I really enjoyed Testament's last album "Dark Roots of Earth" and I am looking foward to the new Avenged Sevenfold. Evile new stuff is keeping me entertained.

And I am DYING to see what Slayer has planned.

In the mean time, can anyone reccommend some good new stuff that is in that sort of wheelhouse? No harder than Slayer, Lamb of God, Evile, etc, but no softer either. That is kind of my metal taste range but I am looking for something new. Any tips?

Thank you!

How 'bout some Ramming Speed: "Ramming Speed - Doomed To Destroy, Destined To Die"-stream

Is this still the most unfortunate timing for an album cover ever?

Nice, thanks for the all the recommendations. I'll sit down and give them a listen. It's pretty paramount for me to give metal music my full attention. That's probably why shoddy scene bands fall apart upon first listen for me.

Had to endure Robbie Williams concert in Munich (GF wish yadda yadda). But it wasn't so bad, had several beers before and several more during the gig and it was quite a show. And I have been surrounded by some nice looking German girls. Or I had too much beer, I do not know.

Been healing my ears with some Bathory today

I still need to listen to Bathory. What album should I start with?
Depends on your preference. For raw black metal, Under the Sign of the Black Mark can't be beat (but the first three albums are in that vein, with the first two being more first-wave Venom-like).
For the less raw and more epic black with the beginning of viking influence, Blood Fire Death is awesome. Hammerheart is my personal favourite, it's epic and beautiful but the BM influence are waning by then (which doesn't bother me).

For more upbeat, folk-tinged viking awesomeness, I'd recommend Blood On Ice or any of the two Nordland albums, they're all great.

Can any fellow GAFers recommend me some music that I would like if I enjoy Opeth so much?

Anathema, doom transitioning to alt/prog rock http://youtu.be/C4x1Mq-NFFc , http://youtu.be/vIh8urwF8wY , http://youtu.be/xs-emvLUY20

Enslaved, progressive (black) metal http://youtu.be/YU9Hg2tcNtI , http://youtu.be/8g9bTTx_vJw, http://youtu.be/HGs28oh-_w0

Pain of Salvation, progressive metal/rock http://youtu.be/KotPLVXngVw , http://youtu.be/2EZhRBPE7HI

Ihsahn, progressive (black) metal http://youtu.be/1ghiLJI6ETE , http://youtu.be/bLKQ5q-25ow

Blood Fire Death or with Hammerheart
Earlier CDs if you like black metal stuff

Sweet. For me personally, I'm actually not much of a Black Metal fan, even though I enjoy some bands in the genre. Viking metal sounds more intriguing, and I'm a huge fan of Folk metal. So I'll be wading through tons of Bathory albums today, at least after I'm done listening to The Somberlain.

I've heard of Pain of Salvation, but not those others. Damn, I'm so glad I stumbled upon this thread. I'm going to be on this thread for a LONG time.

Anybody else here enjoy Dissection?

Leprous - That song is kind of short, but they do longer pieces. It's the backing band for Insahn that someone else linked. Bilateral is a fucking amazing album, too.

Orphaned Land - Basically the Israeli version of Opeth. They combine a lot of middle eastern sounds with the Opethian prog/death approach.

Devin Townsend - He goes through a lot of different styles, some more similar to Opeth than others, but I find a lot of Opeth listeners tend to love him, too.

Between the Buried and Me - This probably gets brought up the most in Opeth recommendations. Personally I think their last two albums drift a bit closer to Opeth-like than previous, but you should check out Colors, too, definitely.

Persefone - I didn't dig their previous album, but this one's some really good tech prog/death stuff.

And speaking of Opeth, I kind of want to get this as a tattoo:

Are you an Opeth fan? I'm starting to REALLY love their music. It took me numerous listens, and their music is tough to get into, but nothing is better than deeply getting into music.

Any way, thanks for the links, every one included. Man, I'm going to be wading through tons of music.

Yeah I'm a pretty big Opeth fan. I don't listen to them quite as much as of recently since I try and listen to so much new stuff, but they were the band that really got me into both Progressive stuff and death metal. Them along with Soilwork got me into the death metal vocals. Opeth also led to my discovery of Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson so long ago.

When it comes to metal, bands like them teach me that it's reasonable to ask for songwriting above all in metal. Playing metal is only half the battle; composing it is another matter entirely.

I love Chuck's vocals on The Sound of Perseverance for being slightly more lyrical distinguishable and higher-pitched than a lot of other death metal stuff. Are there some other guys with a similar style to that?

I've been listening to a ton of old school Thrash Metal. My buddy showed me the albums Epidemic of Violence and Extreme Hatred. Both amazing albums, check them out if you enjoy the genre. Or I'm pretty sure that most of you are already savvy enough to know of those bands, but if you haven't, there you go.

fuck yea, Demolition Hammer and Hypnosia fucking rules. They are my go to face punching thrash bands along with Vio-Lence and Sadus.

I assume that most of us love, or at least respect, Death. So what's everybody's favorite album by them? I'm going with the usual, which would be Symbolic.

Scream Bloody Gore -> Human - > Leprosy - > Individual Thought Patterns - > Spiritual Healing -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Sound of Perseverance
