So...Metallica.

Love them, indifferent to them, or hate them? I'm speaking of their classic material, not that alt-rock garbage that was their 90's work (That includes their horrendous fifth album). I have plenty of Thrash Metal loving buddies who find their music to be tepid and overrated.

I agree with your friends.

Also, MoP is the album that killed metal.

Only care about their first 3 albums, 'nuff said.

FACE - wait, are you Ultra Boris?!? I used to see him post a lot on Metal Rules a long time ago and randomly met him at Thrash of the Titans.

-Early stuff is great.
-I'm sick of the black album. It's too simple.
-I like Death Magnetic. Sue me.

I love them. Even their "alt rock garbage". I even sometimes get into St. Anger. They're in my top 3 favorite bands....sometimes #1.

Hahaha, no. I just remembered that review as soon as Andrew mentioned Metallica.

There's a metalcore band called Walls of Jericho? IS NOTHING SACRED?!
Hahahaha. Sadly no.

Whoa, you were on metal-rules? What was your username? I'm still sorta there, lol. It's been kinda dead though, various forum software issues makes registrations of real users (as opposed to a flood of spambots) almost impossible so it's very stagnant.

Boris was a friend of mine. Met him once IRL ten years ago, when he came to Montreal for a Jag Panzer/Helloween concert (gods that was an awesome night, Helloween played for like 2 hours). I still exchange the occasional yearly funny three-line email with him. Nice dude, a bit eccentric for sure.

I cannot remember my username at all, it might have been something Carcass or Vio-Lence related username. I havent been on Metal Rules since early 2000's.

I unknowingly met Ultra Boris when he came out to SF for Thrash of the Titans in 2001/2002 or so. I was with a friend and some random dude with curly hair and glasses just introduces himself to me. I didnt realize who he was until after the show and Ultra Boris posted about his trip to Thrash of the Titans, haha.

I will never forget the picture he posted where he made his University Professor do the devil horns, haha.

they're pretty shit, baby's first metal band. commit the biggest musical sin of all time by having no climax to 8 minute songs. just boring and bland in general.

Tankard > Metallica.

I still think they are the greatest metal band of the 80s. Their music (first 5 albums) overall gets the praise it deserves. To me most thrash metal albums seem almost naive in comparison to their mid 80s output.

My friends, recommend me some killer black metal.

I've been jamming on heavy as fuck stuff like Cryptopsy, All Pigs Must Die, NAILS, and Dead in the Dirt, so now I'm getting a hankering for some more melodic, blackened stuff.

Listening to my old stand-by of WITTR's "Two Hunters" right now, but I'm realizing I just don't have enough black metal, so lay it on me. New or old, doesn't matter!

I love them. Even their "alt rock garbage". I even sometimes get into St. Anger. They're in my top 3 favorite bands....sometimes #1.

If you were to ask me personally, I would go with their first four albums. Their Lighting/Puppets/Justice trio are classics, their first album is great, and everything else I don't like.

I realize that, in all my years of listening to metal, I still have not listened to pretty much any Power Metal. I'm well versed in all genres except that one.

So, give me the best albums to start with.

They were but this album is actually what it says, straight up USPM. Surprisingly good stuff, believe me!

Other power or speed metal recs:
Euro-style power metal:
- Helloween - Walls of Jericho (get the version with the Judas and Helloween EPs), The Time of the Oath, Keepers pt. I and II
- Blind Guardian - Battalions of Fear, Imaginations from the Other Side, Tales from the Twilight World, Nightfall in Middle-Earth
- Falconer - s/t, Chapters from a Vale Forlorn
- Wuthering Heights - Far from the Madding Crowd
- Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy, The Odyssey (yes not European but it's got the symphonic euro flavour + some prog influence but I like it despite not being a big prog/power fan, it's not wanky)
- Persuader - The Hunter, Evolution Purgatory

USPM:
- Manilla Road - Crystal Logic, The Deluge, Mystification
- Pharaoh - The Longest Night
- Demons & Wizards - s/t
- Jag Panzer - The Age of Mastery, Ample Destruction, Thane to the Throne, Mechanized Warfare

Power/speed metal
- Running Wild - Death or Glory, Pile of Skulls, Black Hand Inn
- Grave Digger - Knights of the Cross, Excalibur, The Grave Digger
- Stormwarrior - s/t

...Eh, there's plenty more good stuff but I think that's enough to get you started. :)

Heart of plenty of the European Power Metal Bands, but I haven't, after all of these years, listened to them at all. I've been a Death Metal fan most of my life, but I feel its the time to start now. Better late than never, I suppose!

I guess the only close I ever got to the style was Nightwish, even though I know they are more Symphonic Metal than Power Metal. Not really a big fan of them (their songwriting is just too cheesy to be enjoyed at length), just enjoy them in small doses.

There's also Dragonforce which were also as close as I got, but I can't stand them for two minutes any way. It's like the Birthday cake of metal, especially since I don't really like sweet food all that much.

Don't worry, none of my recommendations are of the sugary flower metal kind. ^^

I don't think I'm familiar with the term Flower Metal.

Edit: Just looked it up. Yeah..some of those examples were...ick. I'm not anti-soft music and I love music that some consider to be wimpy (After all, my all time favorite band is The Smiths). It was just too much for me.

oh boy, this is my area, where to start. i'll leave the most obvious recommendations aside (Rhapsody, Stratovarius, Helloween, Dragonforce, ect), it's a combo of what Morrigan posted plus European Melodic (keyboard heavy power metal):

ReinXeed - The Light
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9IJaDrgp6I

Lost Horizon - Flame To The Ground Beneath
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVjcD_LPukw

Highland Glory - From The Cradle To The Brave

The Storyteller - Crossroad

Gloryhammer - Tales From The Kingdom Of Fife

Heaven's Gate - Livin' In Hysteria

Trick Or Treat - Tin Soldiers

Dreamtale - Epsilon

Sonata Arctica - Winterheart's Guild

Wizard - Bound By Metal

Mystic Prophecy - Regressus

Pathfinder - Beyond The Space, Beyond The Time

Forgotten Tales - All The Sinners

Iced Earth - Horror Show

Falconer - Falconer

Euro Melodic is essentially a combination of these 3 things:

130.jpg
342_yngwie_malmsteen_trilogy.jpg
GaryMooreBallads.jpg

every Power Metal ballad/slow song copies, in one way or another, Gary Moore's work; the fast pace comes from Helloween and the often times needless complicated arrangements, neoclassical influence and keyboards are straight from Yngwie. vocal style is a mix of every metal high noter that came before.

To power metal recommendations I'll add:

Hibria - Defying The Rules

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjTyVbjUU4I

Kiuas - The Spirit of Ukko

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ePB0C-ml_c

Manticora - Darkness With Tales To Tell and 8 Deadly Sins

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_QYRJ5ASCc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlhzfFwyGI4

Battleroar - To Death And Beyond

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtBJq2RPzso

Dark Empire - Distant Tides

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14fvH1DT4yA

EDIT: changed the Kiuas link, was some weird version of the song.

YES! You guys rule! My ears will be happy for a long time. Especially since, unlike other metal genres, my exploration into the Power Metal Genre are pretty much nill.

Whoa, this is pretty epic. I have to admit that I don't mind theatricality in these sort of bands, as I do enjoy fantasy based metal from time to time. There is, unfortunately, the side effect of overdoing it, which is why I could never get into Dragonforce.

Thrash, you worthless, ignorant sluts. When you look deep down inside, this is a thrash album... it's just so buried in ugliness and filth and decay that it may take three spins to figure it out. The riffs alternate fast and slow similar to any other - Slayer, for instance, or the aforementioned Kreator - it's just that slow is fast, and fast is "too fast my ass". Check out the TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY FIVE beats per minute of The Burning of Sodom, then compare with the relatively mild 190-200 of the middle section of Black Prophecies, which is the closest thing this comes to doom introspection... fifty fucking riffs, each more triumphant than the last, morphing into each other in the middle of this song. Then of course the classic fucking "never slow down, just switch it up" thrash breaks of Perish in Flames, Hunger of the Undead, et al... cunting fuck, yes this is of course a thrash album, but it basically takes any question - offered or otherwise - about thrash and quickly comes up with an answer.

People ask me ... how can we possibly live the heaviest life ever? Just look here, kids. This thing takes Hellhammer and Possessed out behind the woodshed, and teaches them a thing or two about evil. And that's saying something because Hellhammer and Possessed aren't exactly shit bands... see the malevolence of Burning in Hell or mankind's fucking Massacra, and then take a good long look at Hunger of the Undead... check out fucking Stained Class, then Show no Mercy, and then tell me that Death is Certain (Life is Not) is not the logical conclusion of all that...

I still stand by my opinion that Darkness Descends was unmatched in 1986, infinitely better than Reign In Blood.

I agree. I like dragonforce, but there is no question in my mind, dragonland is by far the better of the two. They manage to do it very well without coming across as cheesy. (IMO)

I've always found Darkness Descends to be overrated myself... it's good but too repetitive (though RiB suffers from that as well, but it's more atmosphere).

The problem with Dragonforce is, they try too hard to "fit" even if they have their own "style" they should go for something that actually sounds great to them, not something extreme that sounds terribly overdone, waiting for fans to associate them with other "epic power metal" bands.

1. Bahaha, that UltraBoris Metallica review. Kinda amazing how it's STILL getting brought up after all this time. I saw UltraBoris chime in on a forum discussion about it once simply to say that he actually does spin it from time to time. "Chew on that one."

I was big into Metallica in middle school. They were the band that taught me the value of an album as a complete work, and they paved the way for me to find a lot more stuff down the road. I haven't listened to them in a long time, but I suspect I'd probably still enjoy Kill 'Em All and RTL.

The comment someone made about them being "baby's first metal" was funny though. I literally was first exposed to them as a baby (and I liked it, if my mom's comments are anything to go by).

2. Reign vs Darkness Descends (and/or Pleasure to kill)? Eeeeeeeeeeeeh I don't know about that one. I think I like RiB a bit more than the other two honestly.

3. Dragonforce is one of the most annoying Power Metal bands I've ever heard. I don't have any problem with PM, I like a lot of it, but Dragonforce? Nah.

I thank you all for the recommendations, but the Power Metal albums I've been listening to aren't really growing on me the more I listen to it...

ARGH.

Edit: Or not. It will take me a while, perhaps. I'm still new to the genre. It's one of the few genres where I have pretty much no experience in.

Leprous - That song is kind of short, but they do longer pieces. It's the backing band for Insahn that someone else linked. Bilateral is a fucking amazing album, too.

Orphaned Land - Basically the Israeli version of Opeth. They combine a lot of middle eastern sounds with the Opethian prog/death approach.

Devin Townsend - He goes through a lot of different styles, some more similar to Opeth than others, but I find a lot of Opeth listeners tend to love him, too.

Between the Buried and Me - This probably gets brought up the most in Opeth recommendations. Personally I think their last two albums drift a bit closer to Opeth-like than previous, but you should check out Colors, too, definitely.

Persefone - I didn't dig their previous album, but this one's some really good tech prog/death stuff.

And speaking of Opeth, I kind of want to get this as a tattoo:

mezXQSF.jpg

(the squiggly line is Steven Wilson's signature)

Woaaaah D: Okay no offence but I gotta say sth about this.

I speak for those bands I know:

Orphaned Land are Progressive yeah, but on a totally different direction than Opeth, Opeth tend to add jazz and acid sounds to their music quite often, OL don't, they like to follow and explore more folk local sounds and adding interesting female voice and other eastern elements.

Devin Townsend: You gotta be joking to compare two different and complex bunch of musicians. Devin Townsend is like a black hole, you never know where he can take you in the next album musically and lyrically speaking, (and Opeth tend to be quite repetitive and predictable at times :/) so again, nothing to do.

Conclusion: "Progressive" doesn't mean all the bands that like to experiment with new sounds are strictly related or alike to Opeth.

But kudos for the tattoo design, loved the way you got the elements together, very cool!

Has anybody listened to Pan.Thy.Monium? A friend of mine recommended them to me. He's into all sorts of strange Ambient/Experimental metal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-JjH6CzkwY

Pan-Thy-Monium is fucking brilliant. It's a unique gem and one of the better Dan Swano projects. Khaooos, and Khaooos and Kon-Fus-ion are my favorite albums by them. Battle of Geeheeb has one of the most awesome recordings captured.

His later spiritual follow up Karaboudjan is ok. I think one of the songs had used one of those Jamaican steel drums, haha.
