I´m new to the forum and a big metal fan too. Here are some random recommendations!

Today is the day - Supernova / Willpower / Today is the Day

I´m one of the few people i know that like every record from TTID, people tend to hate the stuff they do now because... well, maybe it´s too crazy. But the first 3 records are overlooked by many and are for me essential for the genre. EVIL SHIT

Crowbar - Broken Glass

Crucial band, crucial album. Anyone that likes this band is my friend.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=457-Y8GYVtg

Tragedy - Vengeance (but anything from them really)

It´s actually D-beat7crust but i´m sure metal fans can appreciate it too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr9k1FLtBx0

Extol - Undeceived

One of my favourite blackish death metal albums... comes from some jesus freaks! Really good stuff, will never get tired of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zfv0NdhGjV8

Cult of Luna - Salvation

Best post metal band ever for me outside of Neurosis, of course. Every record they get out is perfect and the next one even better! Yeah, it makes no sense but they do it! (although i still haven´t heard their last one, but it´s going to be REALLY hard that i like it more than ´Somewhere Along the Highway´) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDr5GKL_v2A

Bolt Thrower - Mercenary

Perfect soundtrack for a war. WAAARGH

Went to Mayhem Fest on Sunday and it was waaay better than last years. Behemoth and Cannibal Corpse where amazing, especially the pit for cannibal corpse. Whitechapel impressed me as well, I actually like there songs live better than on the albums.

Also saw Slayer for the first time, and I am so glad I got lawn tix instead of pit tickets this time because of all the insanity caused by the rabid Slayer fans also in the lawn I saw 3 people get knocked out, one was out for 4-5 minutes then got up finally then ran right back into the pit. Fires where started, shirts where set on fire and spun around wildly, and all in all it was probably the most awesome/insane thing I have ever been a part of and I still have all the bruises/pain in my legs and arms from it.

I just got back from Mayhem Fest a couple of days ago.....was fuckin awesome.....friends, alcohol, metal, and girls in skimpy attire.....couldn't ask for more (well i could but fuck it)....I'm assuming you went to the one in San Bernardio too?

Slayer absolutely stole the show for me.....i couldn't even feel my neck after they got done performing.....other bands that i thought put on great shows were JobForACowboy, Killswitch Engage (yeah yeah i know), Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse, and Behemoth.

I've still got a fuckin knot on my head from the BDM pit.

Yep, Glenn Helen. Thats funny, I probably saw you there if you where in the pits, although I wasn't there for BDM since we where getting our wallets raped by the venders. Sort of regret skipping out on them, since i've heard from a couple people that they where awesome.

'Eternal Kingdom' is a really excellent album in my opinion, and much better than 'Somewhere Along the Highway' (although I really enjoy that one too!). 'Salvation' still remains my favorite to this day, maybe because it was my first CoL album.

Thanks for the Ulcerate recommendation too, guys, picked it up the other day. That album is absolutely crushing!

I was going to buy the Eternal Kingdom album at the show the fuckers where supposed to give in my city but they canceled it and got me really pissed so i didn´t feel like buying it but i really think i should now, because if it´s better than SATH it must be fucking incredible.

BTW, i´ve also checked Ulcerate, didn´t know them, i love their approach to brutal death, they are complex but entertaining (so many brutal death metal bands just bore me the hell out, it´s like they think that music shouldn´t be enjoyable or something) i will definitely be getting some records from them.

Don't know if it counts as metal as I've just gotten into the genre myself but I found this band while buying some songs. Pretty cool band called Scar Symmetry, ended up buying a bunch of their songs.
Definitely metal. If you like Scar Symmetry, check out Mercenary. Similar style of modern melodic death (melo-death) and power metal but I think these guys blow Scar Symmetry out of the water.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
So...any Agalloch fans on GAF? Definitely my favorite band, and I'm eagerly awaiting their 4th album. The White EP was absolutely amazing, too.

Also, any recommendations for an Agalloch fan? I mean, I know the obvious stuff like Opeth, but anything outside of that would be welcomed. Daylight Dies is the only thing I've found that sounds even close to Agalloch, and even that's only a vague similarity.

I listen to this band once in a while. I need to get used to Kirk's voice, though. I first knew him from Down, which is one of my overall favourite 90s/00s bands. If you like Crowbar you should definitely check them out. :)

Heavy! Kirk has grown a huge beard, as you can see. :D

Any prog metal fans should check out Aeon Zen

http://www.myspace.com/aeonzen

Two 19-year-olds from the UK managed to assemble a nice group of guest singers for their debut album.

Nils K. Larue (Pagan's Mind)
Andreas Novak (Mind's Eye)
Elyes Bouchoucha (Myrath)
Andi Kravljaca (Seventh Wonder)

anybody listened to DEMOLITION HAMMER-EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE? Fuck i love this album. it's so heavy.

a lost gem. I think those guys were in their mid-40's when that came out. Fucking brutal.

check out Morbid Saint - "Spectrum of Death". They are quite similar. Fast, heavy, thrashy, and on the verge of death metal. Came way before Demolition Hammer too.

i'll assume there are power metal fans here, so here's two for you guys:

- Cain's Offering - Gather the Faithful

244088.jpg

formed by none other than former Sonata Arctica guitarrist, Jani Liimatainen , with the great Timo Kotipelto on the vocals.

as you can expect, it has a very early Sonata Arctica/Stratovarius vibe, with excellent production, as you would expect from a finnish power metal band.

special mention to the beautiful ballad Elegantly Broken, the final track of the album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hCw4D0WawM

- Burning Starr - Defiance

242193.jpg

the great Jack Starr is back, this time with amazing, largely unknown vocalist Todd Hall.

this new album is a bit different from the previous ones, which fit right into the speed/heavy metal scene from the '80s. now, the sound is more similar to Manowar and the production is absolutely stellar, as it usually is with Magic Circle bands.

special mention to Once and Future King and Black Clouds of Thanos. could find a full song, here's the album sampler:

Just stumbled by this. Whoever's in Sydney/Australia around NYE:

Screamfest_flashA.jpg

Screamfest, a 2 day festival with 20 bands due to take place at the Enmore Theatre on New Year's Eve '09 and New Year's Day '10. Bands set to appear include Cynic, Dark Funeral, Destruction, Destroyer 666, Edguy, Ensiferum, Rotting Christ, Sonata Arctica, Spawn Of Possession, Darker Half, Synperium, Eye of the Enemy, Black Majesty, The Amenta, Universum, Killrazer and more!

Thats a pretty amazing lineup considering Australian metal gig standards. I'll be there

Anyone heard of Raunchy ? Really small band and hugely underrated. Not sure what to call them, probably goteborg metal (granny porn in the video, you are warned :lol )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5T3YwZLxb0

Other than them who i do a lot of work for i am really into dillinger escape plan and mastodon (mostly crack the skye) at the moment.
Raunchy's a pretty good poppy metal band. They combine modern melodic death (melo-death) with some metalcore and even hard rock/nu-metal influences. Death Pop Romance is better than their album from last year, Discotheque Wasteland.

Yeah i know a lot of people think that but imo Wasteland Discotheque is the best they made. It's poppy as fuck but i love every second of it, went to see them 6 times last year.

But they arent as unique anymore as they were with their old singer, this new emo looking guy is actually a professor. :lol

Shame that they arent really trying to live of the music, with all the shitty "catchy metal" out there today (looking at you crabcore). Anyway damm i cant wait for the new dillinger, whenever they release new clip from the new album i sit and listen to the 5 seconds over and over again. I'm pathetic but it sounds so good.

I really can't wait for Endgame (been listening to tons of Megadeth records in preparation) but I can't stand that album cover. It just looks so boring/generic. And where the hell is Vic?

Anyways, main reason I entered this thread was for some recommendations. At this point I only really listen to well known and classic thrash. Stuff like the classic Metallica records, Megadeth, Slayer, etc. I realize I kinda seem like a noob and this question has probably been asked in this thread before, but are there any newer bands that sound like those bands? I'm open to other metal genres too, but I'm really looking for some new thrash to listen to. Any suggestions?

There are some newer bands that try to sound similar to the great 80's thrash acts and do so with mixed results.

Mantic Ritual - Executioner
-This was an earlier thread rec that sounds a lot like Kill 'Em All era Metallica

Municipal Waste - Hazardous Mutation
-Fantastic crossover thrash. Fast, short, explosive tracks.

Lazarus A.D. - The Onslaught
-I like these guys, they sound very modern but are clearly influenced by classic thrash.

Warbringer - Waking Into Nightmares
-Interesting band, sounds a bit like Slayer.

Check these out, but don't just limit yourself to thrash metal. Try to expand into other sub-genres.

I'm a huge metal fan, but I'm still relatively (2ish years) new to the genre. Anyway, I'm going to a Metallica concert in September, and I just found out the opening acts are Lamb of God and Gojira. I know nothing about either group... are they worth checking out beforehand? If so, which albums are good starting points? Thanks :D

fucking bullshit. my metallica show is in november and gojira won't be playing. replaced by some other band.

in other news. the cover disc in the new Dream Theater album is really amazing. just as good as the album itself. their cover of Dixie Dreg's Odyssey is so good. as is their rendition of Rainbow's Stargazer.

I'm going to that show too. Lamb Of God is groove metal which I don't really like at all. Gojira is more sludgey I suppose, I've enjoyed the few songs I listened to on Youtube. Look for something from "From Mars To Sirius" and see if you like it.

For Gojira i suggest their latest "the way of all flesh" and the album before that "From mars to sirius".

The way of all flesh is more of a refined version of from mars to sirius. Songs just have a bit more structure and so on. Both are great albums, Love the band and im really fucking jealous you guys get to see them live.

Wonder if they will ever hit AUS .. i doubt it :lol

Check out the following:

Warning - Watching From a Distance
Ahab - Call of the Wretched Sea (and their new one, The Divinity of Oceans)

That Warning album is my favorite doom album of all time, and it's very depressive and slow. Ahab is as well, and nearly as good.

I guess they aren't straight-up "metal", but, lord do they fucking thrash. Been listening to them since Hidden Hands... and each album gets better and better. Any other DH fans up in here?

Ocean fan? POTL was one of my favorite records last year. Such a fucking good band.

I would second Diseased Yak's Warning recommendation. You might also want to check out Dolorian.
