I like lists, yeah!!

My favourite metal albums isn't the easiest task, though! I don't think I can rank them but I'll try to focus on some albums I always come back to...Mostly thick and heavy stuff, I love that! I'd love some recommendations based on my list1 Anything I have to listen to???

The holy four:

1. Black Sabbath Master of Reality
2. High on Fire - De Vermis Mysteriis
3. Cathedral - Carnival Bizarre
4. Sleep - Dopesmoker

The rest of the inner circle:

5. Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
5. Judas Priest - Painkiller
5. Black Sabbath - Vol4
5. Cathedral - The Guessing Game
5. Down - II
5. Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance
5. Sleep - Holy Mountain
5. High on Fire - Surrounded By Thieves
5. Orange Goblin - Eulogy For The Damned
5. Wino - Punctuated Equilibrium
5. Torche Harmonicraft
5. Torche - Meanderthal

So, this thread did me a solid when it came to schooling me on old school death metal -- has helped a lot in getting my ear tuned to the genre.

Would love some suggestions for hardcore -- since there's a pretty huge movement right now and I have a hard time connecting with a lot of it. Converge is my biggest blind spot -- so I'm thinking I need to go back and figure out the timeline and kind of figure out where this whole hardcore/metal thing started and go from there. Makes sense?

TLDR: I don't get hardcore (the new stuff, I get Black Flag just fine). Teach me.

Are you looking for metallic hardcore (the stuff that's popular now) or just good old fashioned hardcore?

I remember asking this thread for recommendations months ago, with High on Fire being one of them. Since then HoF (and subsequently Sleep) has become one of my favorite bands, so I can't thank you guys enough for introducing me to them.

From Self Defense to De Vermis, love every album. Surrounded by Thieves is my current favorite, but it changes every month.

Try recommending again though, because I'm hurting for more.

The other stuff you guys recommended never hit me like HoF did:

The Sword: meh
Kylesa: liked this at first, but I can't sit through an entire album. The most recent one in particular was really bland
Black Tusk: okay, nothing mind-blowing
Red Fang: I like them quite a bit

Other favorite bands are Mastodon and Baroness (mostly red 'n blue)

I want something to hit me as hard as Pike did. Doesn't have to be stoner/sludge per se, just stuff you guys think I might dig based on this.

If you want some recommendations, what particular sound are you looking for? Can you be more specific?

Something that hits hard and is crushing, but still has a lot of variety. And great riffs of course. What I really like about HoF for instance is that every album has a distinct identity or sound, and is unlike the other. Same with Mastodon: I love Leviathan and Crack the Skye, but they're pretty much polar opposites in approach. Looking for something similar to Crack the Skye in particular.

Here are some bands that I would definitely classify as being Heavy. I don't necessarily equate heaviness with speed, and some of these bands definitely aren't of fast tempo. But I personally feel these are bands are very heavy and in the vein of what you've been enjoying so far.

I think if you are looking for something that hits hard with crushing instrumentation, I think you can't do worse than Electric Wizard. Dopethrone is heavy as hell, and unlike Sunn O))), it's not of the Drone variety which means there is plenty of variation in riffs and some changes within the song so you don't get bored. Here's a sample of their music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWHplp10kQM

Also, if you can sacrifice a bit more structure for heavy guitar riffs, Funeral Doom might be for you. Pretty much among the heaviest metal ever created. For me, nothing beats Ahab's Call of the Wretched Sea. Here's a sample

Have you heard Mastodon's Remission? That's one of my favorite metal albums of all time, and it's heavier than Leviathan. Of course, I shouldn't mention the album's absolutely fantastic use of dynamics, progressive elements, and various tempos, which makes the album never boring and full of variety.

March of the Fire Ants is my favorite Mastodon song. But I have to admit Remission is the one Mastodon album I don't know that well. Will rectify that.

I wouldn't mind that list either while you're at it, I've been listening to Man's Gin a lot lately, it's a country-ish side project by Erik Wunder of Cobalt and I can't seem to get enough of it...here's one of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4b5kMp-mcU

You enjoy Red Fang so please try Orange Goblin! Classic powerful british stoner rock/metal! They've been around for quite some time now, too...1996 or something. Their singer is a beast and they all seem to be some down to earth dudes! They really built a strong unique style, especially on the latest 4 or 5 albums. I will link some cool songs:

Rage of Angels (listen to the whole thing!)

Big Black

Red Tide Rising

Some You Win Some You Loose

(Edit: best listened with a bottle of beer and high volume! :) )

Moar you say? Hmm try any of Agalloch's albums. Also, give these two albums by Oak Pantheon a listen to. Pretty good stuff.

Whatever you think will help me vibe with the new metallic hardcore stuff. To be honest I am familiar and love the original hardcore stuff from the '80s. I used to skate to that stuff. It's the evolution to where we're at now that loses me a bit.

Integrity is somewhere halfway between older hardcore and the metallic hardcore on southern lord.

Discharge, as they were a big inspiration for many thrash, death and black metal bands.

Classic crust punk like Amebix, Hellbastard and Sacrilege

Doom laid the blueprint that most modern "crust" bands (that aren't tragedy clones or "atmospheric crust") follow.

Skitsystem is my favorite of the Doom style bands. They've got a big death metal influence in their sound as well and Thomas Lindberg from Grotesque and At The Gates was their vocalist up to their second album.

I used to be a fan of Trivium, but they've gone more and more mainstream and pop metal with every album. I think they lost me with In Waves.

I'm so out of the loop with certain Modern Metal scenes that I have no idea who those two bands are. Have I heard of them? Oh yeah, but I've never listened to their music.

I'm not familiar with DevilDriver, but you're not missing much with Trivum. They're a popular Metalcore/Melodeath band, and they were one of the first bands to get me into harsh vocals, but they're pretty generic.

Yeah, I listened to Trivium once. It ruined my day and I was very sad. I went on the internet to complain about it, but nobody cared. :(

I don't even like Trivium. I just don't get why some people in this thread get so bothered by what others listen to.
I don't get it, either. I actually don't care what others listen to, but if you listen to the 'wrong' type of metal, rest assured, people will jump on the chance to tell you how shitty your taste in music is here. Happens all the time. We get brief respites from it when a few of us metalcore fans post about it, but it always reverts back at some point. Always.

Pretty much my take on them as well.

It's a general thing in the entire metal culture I've noticed. I've never seen more of the, "I loved them but, now I hate them because you like them..." attitude anywhere else than I've seen in over 20 years in various metal scenes. Hell, I used to be guilty of it until I got older. When I was 19 I would dismiss songs as soon as I heard a grindy/clean vocal mix (not the same as the attitude but a relevant example nonetheless). I loathed it at the time. In doing so I missed out on some good shit, like Strapping Young Lad. All because I was acting like a pretentious dick.

And it always will. It's not exclusive to Neogaf metal...unfortunately.

Have fun man. Its too bad you don't listen to old school cheese or extreme/headache metal. You might have fit in more. ;)

So you like Converge? I certainly do.

Any reason for you being rude?
Yea. Why did you automatically assume I liked Converge? My reciprocal assumption was that you only said that in order to belittle the sort of metalcore I do like, you knowing full well that 'original' metalcore is perfectly acceptable to listen to.

I've been around a while man. I know how this usually goes. If that's not what you were doing, I genuinely apologize. :(

It's ridiculous. Heck the other day some were basically putting Cradle of Filth in boy band territory. No joke. It doesn't matter man. Either way no one in the "real" world give a shit about this music.Even hard rock has seen better days. And really, I'm fine with it.
