Immolation continues to put out quality death metal albums. Not changing the world or anything but most, if not all of their albums are very solid.

Just remembered:

Today is the day that Chuck Schuldiner, one of the most important musicians in Death Metal (if not THE) passed away from a brain tumor. Fuck...

RIP Man! You're my musical hero!

Immolation continues to put out quality death metal albums. Not changing the world or anything but most, if not all of their albums are very solid.

Damn straight!

For me, it's their combination for abnormal, dissonant riffs, unusual drum patterns, and well written lyrics addressing religion in a thoughtful matter. Their sound is very recognizable as far as I'm concerned. Also, Ross Dolan.

Here's the list. Apparently you have to purchase the magazine to see the list, but I'm glad others posted it.

EDIT: Whoops, double post.

Number 37 should be #1 IMO.

While I don't quite agree that Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is better than, say, Deathspell Omega's SMRC or Rotting Christ's Thy Mighty Contract, it is easily the best Burzum-album. Also, Maranatha by Funeral Mist is represented on that list but no trace of Salvation? That's.....interesting.

Basically, Decibel Magazine released a Top 100 list of Black Metal albums. Tends to be rather predictable at times, but I'm not complaining too much. I don't mind their Top 10, although I think that Hunger is a more accomplished work than Blaze. Also, Storm of the Lights Bane is too low.

Not a bad list - their #1 was my personal #1 for many years so i'll give them that. Agreed about Storm of the Lights Bane being too low.

Marduk are average and i don't know how that album managed to get into the top 10. Rest of the Top 10 is pretty good (though that Satyricon album sends me to sleep in parts).

The complete absence of Lunar Poetry by Nokturnal Mortum is surprising, i love that album.

It's a solid list but they were playing it pretty save it seems. Nice to see so many Bathory albums among the upper third.

Bathory was the "band" that got me into black metal in the first place. (Ok, and Cradle of Filth, but let's not talk about that.)

*Shrugs* I can definitely see why these lists are disliked (personally, I find them iffy at best), but I always enjoy the discussions that arises from the concept in general. Either way, Sign of the Black Mark is a damn amazing album, for sure. The self titled album also has a wicked cover.

Those first 3 Bathory albums (and Blood Fire Death in parts) are all evil as fuck. Yet catchy too. They are probably the most played albums on my last fm stats.
Liked Hammerheart but its a bit hit and miss after that for me with Bathory.

That list isn't overtly offensive, but it's pretty safe and excludes both classic bands (Forgotten Woods, Summoning, Windir, fucking Vlad Tepes) and more experimental ones that I believe should make the list (Solefald, Agalloch,
Deafheaven
). Meh.

Yes, those albums sound like they are being forged within smoldering fire deep underground. Especially their debut, of which I've been enjoying these days.

On another note, It's sad to note that Sacramentum's Far Away From the Sun is often missing or snubbed from recognition. Seriously, that's an excellent album.

Bolded are the albums that I like. Some on the list I have not heard before (I kinda dropped out of black metal about 10 or more years ago)

You can argue these lists ad nauseum, but there are some odd omissions:

  • Necromantia/Varathron – Black Arts Lead to Everlasting Sins but no Necromantia - Scarlet Evil, Witching Black?
  • First two Samael albums but no Ceremony of Opposites?
  • Loads of Enslaved albums but no Vikingligr Veldi?
  • Where is Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale? Much better album than Aspera...

Hammerheart is actually my favorite Bathory album. Listening to "One Ride To Asa Bay" for the first time literally changed my (musical) life. Although it isn't really black metal but rather the blue print for every viking or pagan band that followed.

But I like that they listed it anyway (and also Dissection's "Storm Of A Lights Bane" for that matter).

Hammerheart is the quintessential Bathory album. They have plenty of other great ones but I agree that this one is the best and most definitive.

First two Samael albums but no Ceremony of Opposites?
Blood Ritual is their best by far, but I agree Ceremony is better than Worship Him.

I'd probably go with Blood Fire Death and Blood on Ice over Hammerheart, but all 3 are great. The former 2 marry a bit closer with the black/thrash sound. Blood on Ice is my fav. Bathory record these days.

Valhalla from Hammerheart is one of my fav. Bathory tracks though (the drumming and sound of thunderclouds at around 6:35 into the song is incredible), and One Rode to Asa Bay is a classic.

That's 6 fantastic albums by this band. Even the others, whilst not as good IMO, have some brilliant tracks here and there. I do enjoy Destroyer of Worlds (the song).

Anybody else have your favorite Metal songs based on Literature? It's cool to realize that so many Metal bands take inspiration from such.

I mean, To Tame a Land! Nightfall In Middle-Earth!

I wrote a song about Beowulf. I'll post the lyrics if you're curious. I'm also writing a song about Antigone.

Lets make a list of all of Maiden's cheesy pop culture (television, film, literature) songs...

I'll start with:

Man on Edge based on Falling Down starring Michael Douglas.

Whoa, I never knew the basis for that song. Falling Down is an absurd movie. I love Iron Maiden but cannot keep from hating Quest For Fire.

Basically, Decibel Magazine released a Top 100 list of Black Metal albums.

Without reading the list:

Hammerheart is also great as background music for Volgarr the Viking

Black Metal covers are usually my favorite. To continue the subject on Black Metal albums AND Bathory, I must say that their self-titled has an awesome cover. Black or Yellow?

Or

I think i like the Black & White one more, the yellow kinda works but it contrasts too much against the title. If it was all in yellow might look a bit better.

I love the cover of Blood on Ice. Done by the same artist who did In the Nightside Eclipse, the Somberlain and many others. Probably my favourite Extreme Metal cover artist alongside Dan Seagrave.

Hammerheart is great in general. I actually prefer the slower style Bathory, starting with the song Enter The Eternal Fire, A Fine Day To Die, Blood Fire Death, etc.

I want a fucking Hammerheart movie to be made using Hammerheart as the soundtrack.

Indeed, it's Bathory's best.
