Fuck, if only three sludge bands make the majority, there can't be more than 4 or 5 of them.

I was just giving an example of the sort of bands in the genre, to show that the genre is about as far away from hipster as you can get. I thought it would be helpful as you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

Those bands (at least Crowbar and Eyehategod) worship Black Sabbath just as much as bands like black flag, melvins etc. so I don't really know what you wanted to prove with that. :p

Saint Vitus Doom rock, very Sabbath, awesome

Grief One of the most important sludge bands

Crowbar is for me the most important sludge/doom band, though, even though they are very hard to classify. I´d give almost anything to see them live :/

Out of the "latest" sludge bands I always recommend Cult of Luna, they have a real sense of how to make epic songs that slowly progress in intensity and never become boring. They have 12 minute songs that to me seem like 5. I´d also love to see them live :/

they are fucking excellent. Borderline Sludge/Post-Metal, especially the later stuff.

The new Katatonia album leaked. The first track really sounds like The Great Cold Distance part 2 but after that it becomes something all its own. Its darker, more intricate, and more progressive than almost all of their previous material. I really love it.

I think it's almost certainly the best thing they've ever written, and beyond a shadow of a doubt their best since LFDGD.

Seriously, sludge and doom are being pretty much carried by the hipsters this decade. Many old doom bands are now watered-down wuss rock or some shit and most of the metal shows playing nowadays that aren't lame tech death/deathcore are by hipsters, for hipsters. Let's face it; hipsters have infiltrated metal. Seriously, bringing up three of the few traditional sludge bands from the early-mid 90s, back when sludge was doom/hardcore punk/Southern rock, and before it's developed into what it is now is like comparing early heavy metal when the metallers still looked like hippies and not leather-clad and studded.

My pre-order (Swedish LE that comes with ... whatever it was, I've since forgotten) just shipped today, so I have a little while yet before I hear it. Your comment is encouraging considering I wasn't overly impressed with VE nor TGCD, though they both have their moments.

Did you like Soil's Song? The small bit of rhythmic experimenting they did on that song is extended significantly further and with more powerful results here. Though that's not the only new ingredient. You can really tell they took a 3 year writing break to refine their ideas into a strong whole here.

Yea, it's decent enough. That part of the song you're referring to was ok, though to me, it was missing a little something. I feel that album had a lot of unrealized potential with only a few songs exhibiting it. Perhaps you saying that it's been expanded upon and more powerful will give that 'something' that I had been missing from the 2 previous albums. They are one of the few bands that I will still blind buy a new album from.

Profound Lore put the new Krallice up for order, for those of you that were interested. They ship from Canada (Toronto area), but I'm in the States and it's never added more than a couple of days to average USPS shipping time for me — they're pretty fast at sending stuff out.

Ordered it this morning. This is probably the last big release of the year for me. I'm pretty excited. The title track is killer.

Why does Tom Araya always jump in his death bed when their new albums come out?

It is with great regret that Slayer announces the postponement of its "Canadian Carnage" tour with Megadeth, which was due to begin on November 8. In addition, the band announces the postponement of its appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," which had been set for this Wednesday, November 4. More information will be released shortly regarding the rescheduling of the Canadian dates, as well as the 'Kimmel' appearance.

Slayer's Tom Araya is currently under the care of a specialist for a back injury, thought to be related to his on-stage activity, and the physician has ordered an immediate surgical procedure to take place in Texas tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

"What is foremost in our minds right now is that Tom do whatever he needs to to get this taken care of," said Slayer's Kerry King. "While all four of us are disappointed that we won't be able to see through all of our commitments set for the next few weeks, the most important thing is Tom's health. We thank the fans in Canada and here in L.A., the Megadeth camp, and everyone associated with 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' for their understanding. We look forward to seeing you all soon."

Just ordered th new Krallice yesterday and it shipped today. It takes 2 days for stuff from PA to get to Chicago so I'm guessing 4 days with customs tossed in from Ontario.

I like The Erosion of Sanity more than Considered Dead. Obscura is interesting at times but I don't listen to it that much.

first 2 albums, Erosion of Sanity and Considered Dead. Classic stuff. They got too insane with Obscura and onwards...

I like Obscura most, but all of their albums are good. From Wisdom to Hate is probably my least favorite, although a lot of people like it as it's sort of a melding of their different styles. Very interested to see what the next one is like.

And my copy of the new Krallice shipped, too. Can't wait.

The new Katatonia is so fucking amazing, although it probably took at least 10 listens to sink in - probably one of my top 5 for the year right now.

Same here. I wasn't too sure how I felt after the first couple of listens, but it is REALLY good.

Turisas is such a fun band to listen to. I probably like Battle Metal more than the second album. My favorite song has to be Among Ancestors. If they tour America again, I'd definitely see them.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
Talking with a friend and I might be going to Heathenfest in a couple weeks. Not familiar with most of the bands, but Alestorm and Eluveitie are reason enough imo.

My favorite song is still their cover of Rasputin but I love The Varangian Way. They're supposedly taking time off to work on a new album now so they can start headlining tours in Europe. We probably won't see them on US soil until after the 2010 summer festivals.

Hell yeah. I'm gonna be there one week from today. I saw Alestorm in March and they put on a really kick ass show. I fucking hate belphegor (any band that describes themselves as sounding like "two machine guns fucking" is kinda bullshit imo) but the Eluveitie+Alestorm combo will make it all worth while

Man I wanna know what's so fucking good about Opeth, I tried listening to some of their songs but I keep hearing crap. GAF, why are they always hyped as the best metal band out there right now?

I don't think they are hyped as the best metal band out there at the moment, but they are definately really talented and have really great and interesting song compositions.

Also, at least for me, they took some time to sink in. I wasn't very impressed the first couple of times I listened to Blackwater Park but now I think its great

I was giving examples of bands influenced by Melvins, to show the bands they influenced aren't hipster, which was the original argument and something you have just agreed with. So thanks for proving your own point wrong and proving you don't actually know what the fuck you are talking about.

So are hipsters the new hair?

The difference is hipsters can actually put out good music whereas hair bands rarely could.

Krallice are hipsters for example.

I'll be at the show next Thursday in Springfield, VA. Like you, I'm pretty much going to Eluveitie (FUCK YES!) and Alestorm (they aren't bad). The rest I at least hope are entertaining.

Nah, scenesters are. In the 80s was the hair metal in terms of "false" metal, then nu-metal in the 90s, and now metalcore in the aughts, though metalcore is far more redeeming than the previous two.

Yeah we're ending up in a circular argument here. To me it seems that you're automatically assuming that all uses of the word hipster are pejorative (e.g. when GAF learned and abused the term ad nauseam a month or two ago) and why my obaervations of the past four or five years of the sludge/doom scene were met with such opposition from you.

went and saw Big Business for the 4th time last night in San Francisco. All I've got to say is that Coady Willis is the most entertaining drummer to watch live.

and while we are on the topic of hipster/doom/sludge, there were plenty of the scenester/hipsters at the Big Business show last night...not surprising :p

The Crown (Not together anymore, however, their albums are Godly):

Vio-Lence:

The Crown's first 4 albums were killer, Hell Is Here being my favorite. They went to absolute shit when they brought in Tomas Lindberg from At The Gates, ughh.

Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare is pretty much fucking required listening if you are remotely into thrash. I swear by that album.

Because (depending on what you're looking for in your metal) they are? 'Crap'? That just makes no sense, unless you're not a death-vox guy. If that's it, then get over it. I did. Opeth is simply waaaay too good to dismiss for that reason.
