I've been waiting for this one all year! Hopefully I'll get my T-shirt+digipak from Woodcut soon! I might be going to the Hammer Open Air festival as well to see you guys for the first time. Should be epic.

I was informed today by Woodcut, that due to the unexpected amount of preorders there might be a slight delay in delivery. Apparently the guy has done nothing but wrapped packages for the past days. =)

Hammer Open Air will definitely be a unique experience, in various ways. Firstly; it's the first underground metal festival in Finland. Secondly; some rather extraordinary things might happen onstage. ;)

Cool, thanks for the update. Glad to hear that there have been a lot of preorders.
Lyijysiipi is fucking excellent by the way. I haven't listened to the other songs yet, will proably wait until I have the cd. Hard to resist though :)

Well now I'm really fucking excited about Hammer Open Air :D

Guys....I need more metal to listen to. I used to listen to quite a bit but over the past couple years I've been getting more into hip hop, punk, and indie rock.

Metal I like a lot:
Megadeth
BTBAM
some Metallica

Metal I don't so much like:
August Burns Red
most metalcore(a lot of it sounds exactly the same)

I know I didn't give much to go on but can anyone recommend me some bands I should check out?

Acid, hear some Sodom, specially the album "Agent Orange". I'm sure you'll like it.

Also, try listening to Nevermore too, they're awesome.

Nevermore. You're just in time too, they have a new cd coming out.

Here, have a taste. Small clips of a bunch of tracks from the new album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgeUKIKxbOo

They pretty much have the most badass guitarist in heavy metal, so that helps them be awesome.

Wtf, I've never heard of Nevermore before but that video you linked is really fucking cool

What are their essential albums?

I loved This Godless Endeavor and Enemies of Reality. Dreaming Neon Black is probably the only (IMO) bad album. Dane and Jeff Motherfucking Loomis are masters, it's hard to go wrong.

Any UK Metal-GAFers going to Download?
I have a huge fucking problem cause Ratt and White Wizzard are probably going to overlap :(

I liked DNB a lot, personally. But I like all their albums.

The easiest place to start is probably Dead Heart in a Dead World. This Godless Endeavor is probably their most critically acclaimed album. They don't really have any bad albums. If you get Enemies of Reality make sure you get the remastered version. I think its the more common one now (last I checked it had a black cover, the original release had a white cover). The original mastering was shit.

And yeah...it really can't be said enough...Jeff Loomis is probably the most insanely bad ass guitarist in metal. I certainly can't think of anyone that comes close in terms of being simultaneously brutal, melodic, interesting, and creative, and technical.

Many of my all time favorite metal tracks are from these guys. "Born"(THAT CHORUS!!), "Engines of Hate" (THAT SOLO!!!!!), the list goes on.

Any of you GAF metalheads on Last.fm? I hadn't used it much before, but I'm finding it to be a great way to discover new bands via "scrobbling."
My nickname is the same as here. Hypertrooper You can add me, if you want.

I'm on there too: http://www.last.fm/user/Shrike_Priest

It is indeed a great way to find new music. They've really improved the last few years too, I think they re-wrote their recommendation algorithms a few times. For a long time they were focused on your total scrobbles, which made the recommendations very static. Now they change with whatever I'm listening to at the time. Found tons of good Black/Shoegaze stuff thanks to last.fm

Also, artist-hopping via "related artists" always turns up some nice results.

I am more of an old school thrash guy. I really dislike all this black/death/Opera stuff that most seem to listen to here.

Here are a few suggestions:

Some newer good thrash bands (imo)

Sylosis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKQYQ9sNWiE

Lazarus A.D (These guys are some of the best thrash I have heard in years, so awesome)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17dUpEP9e6A&feature=channel

Cavalera Conspiracy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIj3kpPYh1M

Soulfly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCc_jLctZkA

Lamb of God
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUylZ08N_Q4

Some of the Kings of Thrash: (imo again)

Testament
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09rHDabBQfA

Sepultura (old stuff with Sam and Max, new stuff is shit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtTUzaHly8o

Slayer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNUEhLavV2k

Exodus

So, one of my favorite things to do these days is to explore bands I may have ignored or missed in the past since I have gotten into metal many years ago. I've discovered quite a few of my now favorite bands this way, as there seems to be an endless supply of bands from years past to look into.

So, today I gave WASP a shot. I am completely new to them aside from a few of their hits from the 80's (I'm a wild child, come and loooove me... I want YOUUUU) and I largely ignored them because I figured all of their material was of a similar style.

Today I listened to The Crimson Idol from front to back, and FUCK is it good. Easily one of the best discoveries I've made this year. It really wasn't anything like I expected it to be. It's loaded with riffs and great melodies, and very well written lyrically, which I didn't expect from the man who brought us Animal (Fuck Like a Beast). Some of the melodies are still stuck in my head hours later after a single listen. Can't wait to jump in again.

What was BTBAM's setlist? when I seen them in Feb it was Obfuscation, Disease Injury Madness, Ants of the Sky, Alaska, More of Myself to Kill, Swim to the Moon, encore White Walls

Sorry, I didn't see your post earlier.I forget the order but they played Obfuscation, Disease, Injury, Madness, Mordecai, Desert of Song, Prequel to the Sequel, Sun of Nothing and I think a few more from the Great Misdirect that I'm missing.

I hear they're crazy live. I hope they have a good amount of dates.

I saw them at the first Paganfest but missed them with Dragonforce. They put on a great show. They'll likely team up with Tyr who is also here for Progpower. Don't know how extensive it'll be but they've had a great response for all their shows so I figure they'll at least do a full month of shows including a few Canada dates.

Is it better than the completely forgettable first one?

Yes, absolutely, although that isn't saying much. Ravager is right in that the new additions to their lineup have really influenced the band's sound, but it's for the better.

The album is quite good and has some great moments, but I find that it can get rather meandering at times, almost to the point of boredom. I like throwing this one on when I need something in the background.

Pretty much my exact feelings. There are some truly great parts on the album and it is 100% worth listening too. It does drag a bit at times but overall its good and definitely better than their first release.

If anyone is interested, the new Melvins has leaked. Listened to the first few tracks so far and its brilliant, I am really biased but it is incredible how they still have new ideas and throw curveballs with their sound 27 years on.

Do they still have 2 drummers? that was awesome. I'm a fan, such a shame they will never, ever come to my country :(

To you blokes who mentioned Nevermore, holy shit. I owe you a huge debt of gratitude!

I've mainly just been listening to The Politics Of Ecstasy so far, but it is absolutely terrific melodic progressive thrash. A match made in heaven

Very skilled vocalist, and some absolutely insane guitar and drum work

Can't fucking wait to keep exploring their discography

Glad you're enjoying it. Also check out Warrel Dane and Jeff Loomis' solo work.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
Been reminding myself lately how awesome Ulver is.

Shadows of the Sun, Perdition City, and Blood Inside are awesome. Maybe one day I'll get around to old-school BM Ulver. :lol

Do it! Bergtatt is awesome, and check out the neofolk album Kveldssanger.

Agalloch is my favorite band ever. How will I like Kveldssanger given that fact?

I imagine any fan of Agalloch will certainly like the album - it's entirely acoustic, but through some excellent guitar parts, the haunting vocals and sparse use of drums it creates a fantastically atmospheric sound. I'd liken it to The White EP by Agalloch.

Ulver - Ulvsblakk

Oh, so it's similar to the best album ever. Good then. :D
