The more things change: Usenet posts from rec.games.video and more

Bureaucratic calsification seems endemic to corporate
success. After reading this article, though, I am begining to wonder. I may
actually become to respect Nintendo again.

Meanwhile, everybody in grade school owned a NES and swapped games and talked about NES games all the damn time and didn't think about this shit. It really makes you think.

Real talk, though, Nintendo kids were typically losers. I had a Super Nintendo, and I was not proud of my 3rd grade self. I would beat myself up.

I'm too afraid to look through the archives for my posts. Probably really embarrassing.

At my last job, the first week of work I caught a lot of shit from my coworkers about my postings to rec.games.video, rec.arts.anime, alt.fan.dune, etc. (there was a guy on the team that liked to dig into new workers' pasts before they came on board). I first got into Usenet in 92 in college, and back then I posted with my real name and .edu email address (so I couldn't deny that it was me when my coworkers found my old ridiculous postings archived on Google Groups). Pretty embarrassing since I keep my "nerdy" hobbies to myself, especially at work, and since the mid-90s I've tried to keep my real life off the Internet. Boggles my mind the amount of info people reveal about themselves on Faceboook, etc.

Fanboys definitely never change though. I've long since gotten over the cheerleading for your favorite console/system, so I enjoy watching the meltdowns every generation. Seeing the Sega fanboys implode back in the 90s during the Saturn debacle and comparing to the Sony fanboys during this gen -- lots of laughs. The same defenses, excuses, rationalizations, despair and foolishness, it never changes, haha.

Pfff, Saturn was the shit. Go back to watching your 4th generation Ranma 1/2 subs, nerd.

I didn't start posting with my own account until I think 96, but I think my most embarrassing stuff was posted under my dad's account starting in 93 or so... which I guess kinda sucks for him! Real names being attached to that stuff is really lame in retrospect.

Nah, Pixar was a known tech demo company back then, making their CG shorts and showcasing them off on trade shows.

And sesame street. I was a sesame street junkie so when I later saw the lamp before one of their movies it clicked and I was like "its the sesame street people". Crazy how big the eventually got.

Man the console wars seemed worse back then lol.

They were better. System wars now are just arguments over dumb shit like... all the time. It's not:

"Genesis has Castlevania Bloodlines"
"Well SNES has Super Castlevania IV, you buttmunch"
"Both of you can eat a dick, because TurboDuo has Dracula X. The real one, pansy."

Now it's:

"Max Payne 3 on 360 has better textures"
"Well it's not that much worse on PS3, and I don't have to pay for online"
"I got it on Steam"
"Well on Wii, I'm play..."
"SHUT THE FUCK UP"

Kinda lame. Not worth having loyalty to any platform holder when they all pretty much suck (Except Steam ^_^) and there are almost no exclusives worth caring about anymore.

in 20 years who will discover GAF and see how little gaming conversation/discussion has changed?

Too bad I didn't have internet access at the time, it would have been wonderful to read what I would have written there as a kid!
I was such a Nintendo / NEC fanboy!!

I still remember all the discussions with my friends about how Final Fantasy VII sucked because it was turn based, or how the NES was a horrible console because it had bad graphics compared to the PC Engine. And I wasn't even THAT young....

How I was in the wrong....

Good thing there is no written proof of me saying those things.

SEXISM, get real! (1/26/92)
Whoever started this crap about the sexism in games should be drug out
into the street and have a bullet put into their head. What's the big deal
about this topic, did some knucklehead want to see how many responses he could
get with this subject? If you want to get some discussions that mean something,
type about how NEC had to bail out from the TG-16 or how big a putz Nintendo of
America is.
These are the kind of postings that do nothing but clutter the network
up and are a pain to go over. Sexism in the real world can be taken seriously,
but in a video game? All I can say to this individual is that no planet would
lose its orbit underestimating your stupidity.

P.S.
If you want a real 16-bit system, buy a Genesis

Nintendo wants to buy the Seattle Mariners (1/23/92)
Just heard on the news this afternoon that the Nintendo corporation has offered
around 100 million dollars (give or take a couple mil) for the Seattle
Mariners baseball franchise. I wonder if they were successful, if they would
institute price controls on tickets/fan merchandise.....
Heh, they'll refuse anyone who wants to play on the team if they don't
have their seal of approval tatooed on their arm. They'll put
protection componentry on the players so they can't be traded. They'll
start bringing up lawsuits against teams they lose to...

The possibilities are endless! :)

More EGM bashing... (1/7/92)
The other day I found some old "Video Games" magazines in my closet.
After flipping through them a bit, it is obvious that such magazines
have degenerated. But bear in mind that magazines like VG were going
after the more cerebral gamer--those that actually liked to read about
games and the industry. EGM is targeting the hyperactive game system
owner who's just *gotta* have the hottest new titles. It is a magazine
of fluff and hype, period. Every single preview always makes the game
in question sound like the most incredible thing ever created, no
exceptions. And when a game is finally released it only gets a three
sentence review. It is quite obvious that pulling in gobs of money
is the primary concern.

I really wish there were some more intelligent game magazines out
there. VG&CE is fairly good, but they still have a tendency to inflate
all their ratings and print some things which seriously insult the
intelligence of most readers (the Game Doctor's column comes to mind).

About the best thing I've seen is Computer Gaming World. They print
multi-page reviews, don't use numeric ratings, and avoid spending lots
of time on relative trivialities like the quality of the music or size
of the code. In a recent editorial they compared games to plays; a
play is still the same play, even without costumes or a set.
Unfortunately, they seem to be very big on the computer RPG/simulation
side of things. They did publish reviews of NHL Hockey and Phantasy
Star III though. And they had a nice interview with the designer of
Toe Jam & Earl.

Interesting note: some of the staff of VG now works for EGM.

(genesis) Sonic: How to get all the rings?! (2/24/92)
I have a question about the very first wave in Sonic (act 1 of the green hills
thing).
Is there some way to get _all_ of them?

SNES vs Gensis which do you like? (2/5/92)
this is bull..... genesis has better graphics then snes. some people are
just tring to convince themselves that their snes is a great machine, when
we all know they really wanted to buy a Genesis system.
AAAAARGHHHH! NO! The Snes, super famicom 'piece of junk' or
whatever name you want to put it in, DOES NOT (i'm going
to tell you once more again) DOESNOT scale sprites! As simple
as that! The only thing it scales are the BACKGROUNDS!!!!!!!!

Ok.Now that that's out of my chest (Whew!) I'm gonna tell you yet
ANOTHER truth...is not the programming...it's the machine!
The machine does not help when it comes to intensity of the games!

Before I saw the Snes I thought it'll blew away the genesis...

When I saw the games I thought myself that this is going to be
the end of the genesis.Even my Sega die-hard friends (believe me
i am the most flexible of them) have fear.

Today i am thinking that it's a shame for a 1988 machine to be on
the front of a 1990 one...

I am feeling better now...but please DONT stop sending flames!
Democracy is breaking barriers! DONT let anyone intimate you
from expressing your opinions! ...Just let the chest be empty...:)
The graphics in Super Mario World are weak at best, but the graphics in
Wailee Golf are incredible -- better then anything I've played on Genesis
(including Sonic).

Things are jumping the fuck off in 1993 over a certain game.

SFX isn't that great! (2/29/93)
I've heard a lot of people say that polygons are always terrible and
that the SFX does a better job handling polygons than a computer.

I really doubt that!! On my Centris 610 (Macintosh), Spectre, a total
polygon game, is COMPLETELY smooth and plays at probably 20-30 fps. (Just a
guess but I can't see the frames change so it's definitely smooth) Now, this is
at 640 by 480 resolution, and the SNES is only 256x200 or so (also it's
letterboxed)

The SFX seems like a waste of time if this is the best it can do.
Puh-leeeaze! Peoples' stupidity sometimes amazes me. So what if your
Macintosh outperforms the SNES? My (non-existant :) SGI outperforms
your Mac. What's the point?

This kind of discussion shows almost as much technical ingnorance as
people who think they can copy SFX games.
Oh, I see how it works now. It's acceptable for Nintendo Zombies to make
outrageously incorrect claims and comparisons with full-fledged home systems,
but unacceptable for the owners of those systems or similarly technically
oriented individuals to dispute those claims.

It would also seem to me that the only difference between a cart that uses
the SFX chip and one that doesn't is the inclusion of the stupid chip! I
don't suppose it ever occured to you that it might be possible to, in the
worst case, buy a cart with the chip in it, extract it, build a generic
adapter and copy and use any future game that requires it's presence. I'm
sure other, more intelligent individuals than you, are currently looking to do
just that.

What amazes me are the people with an obvious lack of vision who confuse
something they can't understand with "stupidity". And you've got the balls
to call someone ignorant (misspelled at that).

Randy

Would you idiots stop the SFX arguing? (3/29/93)
These messages comparing the SNES to an IBM/Mac/Amiga etc. are just such a
waste of everyone's time and space. Facts: The SNES is a $90 game machine
with $50 worth of hardware inside of it. The SFX chip adds about $3 or $4
to that total, not including markups and the game software itself.
The IBM systems, 486, 386, etc. are obviously far more powerful. They
crunch numbers much faster, do polygon and bitmap manipulation at high
resolutions in realtime, and all that. They're also selling for hundreds
if not thousands of dollars.

They are NOT marketed to the same crowds. Stop comparing them. The SFX
chip does some pretty remarkable things, like the full screens of
individual asteroids scaling in realtime in the asteroid fields. They'll
use the chip better in the future...

Arguing RIGHT NOW about how great or horrible these hardware components
are is completely futile. Worse yet, you look like a bunch of children
bickering over who has the best toys. Find someplace else to do it.

Yet some more comments on STARFOX (3/29/93)
I cant believe people are stupid enough to compare the SNES to any home
computer.

There is a world of difference between a game console (SNES) and a system
where you have to dump about $3000+ into it before it is worth half a shit (PC).

MEANWHILE:

3DO is good for a laugh. (3/9/93)
I'm so sick of hearing about the 3DO I think I'm going to puke...why
doesn't Atari talk about the Jaguar the way the 3DO is being babbled about?
Sigh...anyway, why don't we all face reality? The 3DO is going to be nothing
more than an overpriced wondertoy...sure, the technology will be amazing and
the thing will easily blow away any existing computer or video game for
gaming action...

But at $800.00 a shot, who's going to buy one? The 3DO will be a niche
machine, the property of an elite few with more money than brains, and an
interesting topic for programmers and stats wizards. Nothing more.

I mean, seriously, how could it make an impact on the market at such an
idiotically high price? Remember Philips' CD-I? Commodore CDTV? Even Neo Geo?
Same thing.

Let's face it...you can bring the Ferrari F40 to the public market...but
when it's priced at around $100,000, it's not going to pose a threat to the
Toyotas or Mazdas of the world.

I just hope the Atari Jaguar is priced at around $200.00...there's no point
in Atari joining the 3DO's high price/low # of owners club.

It's a club that's elite, but not very profitable.
The machine of "am elite few" with "more money than brains"?

I feel that perhaps a public appology might be in order here. I, if
I have funds, will buy a 3DO because video-gaming is my hobby... I
am a programmer by profession, and enjoy seeing new technology used
in ways other than spreadsheets, databases, and the such. It has
great potential, and will be a showcase piece of technology. I do not
feel that I am *stupid* because I wish to purchase it.

As for the Jaguar... well...I *honestly* hope its everything its
cracked up to be... but seriously, I doubt it will happen... BTW,
Has anyone mentioned, is it CD-Based? Something with "TRUE-COLOR"
better be... 24bit images will take up alot of cartridge space.
> I'm so sick of hearing about the 3DO I think I'm going to puke...why
>doesn't Atari talk about the Jaguar the way the 3DO is being babbled about?

One VERY good reason is that we *KNOW* there's gonna be a 3DO...no ifs,
ands or buts about it. Matsushita, Electronic Arts, Time-Warner and the
other companies developing it have NONE of Atari's reputation for hyping
vaporware.

Right now, if you want to be at the cutting edge of computer gaming, and
prefer the best simulators and rpg's as opposed shoot-em-ups, beat-em-ups
and other arcade stuff, you'd have to spend over $2,000 for a 486DX clone
system. The $700 starting RETAIL price of the 3DO will probably make it
an attractive alternative, provided it has an extensive pc game library.
With Electronic Arts as one of its developers, you can bet the house that
there *WILL* be tons of software titles out for it, with much more depth
than you could possibly get on a 16 megaBIT cartridge.

Most computer games, even the more recent releases, can be bought at any
of a large number of reputable mail order software outfits for under $40.
Good luck in finding a just released, brand-new Genesis or SNES cart for
that price. One way gets you with the price of hardware; the other with
the price of games.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You don't seem to know much about computer gamers, and that's probably
where the 3DO will make the most impact initially.

If you're content to play with your arcade type shooter carts (and their
seemingly endless parade of sequels) by all means knock yourself out (oh
WOW, like ThunderFarce XXXXIII is soooo way cool and much more totally
awesome than ThunderFarce XXXXII!) but your crack about "more money than
brains" was rather uncalled for, as many people enjoy games that have
depth difficult to attain within the limitations of a cartridge based
system.

Believe me, when the 3DO comes out, it won't be too long before I
join the ranks of the "elite and unprofitable".

EGM's Jaguar vs. 3DO quote (3/11/93)
I don't know if anyone cares, but here it is,
the quote from EGM: (page 46)

"...While we're talking hardware, this dog of war heard from not one,
not two, but three (count 'em) three program heads who all insisted
that Atari's new Jaguar can out-shoot the new 3DO wonder machine! More
technical ability can be found, according to those in the know, in the
Flare-inspired shell that is now going through final prep in Texas
than any other machine in existence! What's the catch? As previously
reported by the great Q, the knuckleheads at Atari decided to leave
the RAM out of the console to save some pennies and, in the process,
left the hulky hardware singing high soprano!"

There you have it, the official "evidence" from EGM.

Anyways, that was pretty draining to type that... It's bad enough just to
read it!! :)
Can't believe EGM too much. It's about 80% trash, and 20% fact (well, the
pictures are impressive, though..). Anyone who's kept up on the way they rate
games know what I'm talking about...

I don't think you read all of those Usenet system wars posts. And I suggest you don't because they're horrible.

I'm thinking that part of the anti Nintendo sentiment was a reaction of PC gamers to seeing their hobby going from niche (post crash) to mainstream. There was a strong anti-corporate undercurrent that still holds even to this day.

They were part of the forefront of computer graphics, so they were definitely in the know to anyone remotely interested in the field. Usenet posters discussing videogames at the time were very likely part of that group. :p

I guess we don't need to dig into the archives for this one.

I don't even want to look up anything I was posting in that era.

I started interneting at age 10. Around 1993.

I remember getting into really heated arguments about the PSX and N64. I was in the N64 camp at the time, and could not understand why anyone thought the best of the PSX was anywhere close to the N64. I owned both, but at the time I liked the stable look of N64 games over the lack of perspective correction PSX games.

I liked the detail of PSX games at the time though.

Haha straight outta Usenet.

They were the true OG's of the online video-game community.

2) LOTS and LOTS of depth. Zelda is a perfect example. If you're
just blasting commie/dungeon dwelling/Zarton scumbags, the game loses
appeal very fast. Unless of course you blast them in new and interesting
ways at each level. I personally think Sundog and Dungeon Master are
two of the best home video games ever written as they keep you occupied
for MONTHS...

Ahh, the days when you could freely use the word "commie" as an insult.

DreamCast: Open discussion & Thoughts Part 1 (6/5/98)
Okay, enough of all the pleading with Sega. I have one question to ask
all the other console owners. Don't you think that technology is moving way
too fast for game developer's to catch up?
Just look in America, the 8-bit
market started with the NES and SMS in 1985. 6 years later in 1991, the
16-bit SNES and Genesis emerged. 4 years later in 1995, the succesful
32-bit PSX and Saturn were launched. 1 year later in 1996, the first
succesful 64-bit console is launched in the N64. Now, in less than a year
from now, we will see a 128-bit console. Woah, now slow down here. If it
took Mario 64 3 years to make, how can we expect more third party hits to be
produced in such a small amount of time. Granted, Sony, Sega, and Nintendo
will always have time to produce hits since they will have head starts in
terms of knowing the architecture of their own console, but how can we
expect 3rd party developers to produce classics in the span of <1-2 years?

Okay, so companies like Capcom, EA, and Square would get early development
kits, but how about small upstarts. Well, I'm probably wrong, but really
how many NEW games with a NEW premise that breaks open a new genre have been
put out in the in the past year? Really, none. Goldeneye: great game,
but all it is, is another Doom/Quake clone done really well. Gran Turismo:
great game, but just another racing game, done with depth and realism.
All
comments and thoughts are welcome

just read this one, it's late 90s internet as hell. not even going to quote any of it

Why Asians always play better video games?
Those Amercian gamers who own new and great titles like "Soul Edge" (PS),

"Rage Racer"(PS), are mostly American Asians!
And those up-to-date, English videogame web-sites are mostly done by

Why those horrible "XXXXX Trilogy"(PS/N64/SS)", "Crusin' USA"(N64) are so
popular among white Americans? Never have a chance to show up in Singapore
and was sold out in USA? Strange huh?
Amercian game magazines sucks too... I always read the best/latest/real
game reviews in magazines from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan. I don't speak
japanese :(
Not all Americans play bad games, just the white one.

I just want to point out the truth... I'm not a racist.....

Yes I have, it's a weak game, no better than VF1, and in fact
look like it rips off several things from VF1

And finally:

SNES and EGM Stuff: Total Carnage; Empire Strikes Back...
(11/25/92)

I just saw the cover of the latest EGM issue and it mentions for the SNES
Total Carnage, Super Empire Strikes Back, and the Sony CD-Rom PlayStation.
Does anyone have any more info that they could add to this? This stuff sounds
pretty good, I love Total Carnage, and Super Star Wars was fantastic. Well, it
appears that CD or No CD, the SNES is getting some quality games. :)
SEGA is #1!!! hehehe!!

SONY PlayStation (12/21/92)

The SNES + the upcomming SNES-CD = SONY PlayStation

The SONY PlayStation and the SNES-CD are supposed to come out at the
same time (next year sometime).

StarFox vs. SEGA ? (3/30/93)
Lets see here, first of all, I trashed my SEGA a few months ago
and bought a SNES. The games and graphics are by FAR superior.
Of course, we must note, the Genesis came out a few years before
the Super Nintendo. I'll give them that ... however, for the swearing
Joshua out there, the only way SEGA can beat this 8meg SNES game is
with a CD ROM game.

So taking that into perspective .. what will a 16meg SNES SFX chip
do to Sega? Or even worse ... what will the SNES CD-ROM do to SEGA?
What did Sega do to Nintnedo with Sonic, eh? So much for superiority.
(Oh, yeah. SMW is neato cool! NOT!)
>Bubsy is quite cool Sonic clone (by Accolade) for SNES

Actually, Bubsy is supposed to be quite cool for both systems. It is due out
for both the SNES and Sega this month (or next)
Who's to say Sega won't develope their own SFX chip for their games???
I can't see this happening mind you with a CD player out which can do
this. I don't think though that the SEGA needs an SFX. The 68000 they've
got is plenty powerful and sufficiently fast enough to handle the job.
How many Sega games have slowdown?? I am not familiar with the system,
but the only game I heard of that has slowdown was Sonic II. How many
SNES games have slowdown --- I can't count that high!
And as far as original software, my main reason for liking SEGA
more than Nintendo can be summed up by one example: Ecco the Dolphin. Not
only did SEGA come up with a game that is completely original in concept,
but they spent months researching the habits and studying the movements
of dolphins, so as to make it as realistic as possible. I just can't see
Nintendo putting this kind of effort into a game.

SNES vs Genisis (3/31/93)
>- SNES has 32768 available colors, Genesis has 512

- SNES has a poor processor, that runs at a very slow clock rate. The
Genesis uses the 68000, and runs at a much higher clock rate.

- Currently, both systems have some additional hardware options available
as well. The SNES has the light gun, so does the Genesis. The SNES now
has the Super FX chip, to help with graphical manipulation. The Sega has
the SegaCD, which has great potential, as well as some recently announced
add-ons such as the Virtual Reality glasses and the activator,etc..
They are also supposed to be compatible with a new CD/LaserDisk/Game system
coming out. The SNES has announced plans for a CD system, but have run
into a number of delays and it remains to be seen if it will ever really
come out.

Hey, even if you sound like an overly biased SNES fan, this is the best
advice you can give someone. The hardware is squat. With both systems
only running $90, the cost of about 1.5-2 cartridges, it is nothing...
The cost of the games is what will kill you. But, find the games you like the
best, and go with it.

IMHO, the Sega has better games in the realms of Sports (the EA line ),
"cute/kid/cartooney games" (taz, the disney games, sonic, etc...),
platform games, and (IMHO), shooters as well. The SNES has better games in
the areas of puzzle/strategy, beat-em up fighting games (SFII), racing games
(Mario Kart, etc..). The Sega has a LOT more games. But, some of those games
are older and look it. The SNES has a LOT of BAD games, but most of those
games are the older ones. The newer ones are getting better.
> The Sega Genesis 6 button controller is not yet
>available.

But it will be by June. And so will SF2:CE. How about the SNES CD-ROM? When
will that be out?

>If you like the arcade game "Smash TV" be sure to get the SNES.

And if you like SF2:CE be sure to get the Genesis.
and also Flashback
and Cool Spot
and Xmen
and Fatal Fury
and Blaster Master 2

>And if you want to play SFII on your system this year get the SNES.

You mean you don't consider SFII:CE as SFII?
Heh. Having trouble accepting reality? It's not a good sign...

>If you want to buy a CD player and you want it now, get the Genesis.

If you want to buy a CD player 5 years from now, get the SNES.

>The Genesis has a lot more bad games than the SNES.

It also has more GOOD games than the SNES.

Death of Fighting Games (May 1, 1993)
No, that is not the name of some new fighting game.

I just visited my local arcade and noticed that they just got in the
second Street Fighter clone game in the last two weeks. This time it is World
Heroes2. The last one was some fighting game from Data East. In fact most of
the space occupied by SF2:HF machines before have now been taken over by the
new clone games.

The popularity of Street Fighter 2 (classic, CE, HF) is definitely dying fast,
if it isn't already almost dead. I guess what I am wondering about is: does
anyone think that this endless series of SF2 updates and its clones will
ever end? I have a feeling that once SF2 is no longer popular, neither will its
clone games retain their popularity. I predict that fighting games will
disappear into the abandoned corners of the arcades as quickly as they became
the dominant arcade game genre.

I guess I am asking this because I for one am sick and tired of all these SF2
ripoffs. The problem is that they are all too similar. It seems like all these
games are trying to be close to SF2 as possible, without resorting to blatant
copying. You get the same fireballs, uppercuts, throws, super-secret move
#XXXX...blah blah blah, and so forth. No originality at all, except in the
character designs. Even then there is a lot of cloning.... the cute female
character, the big wrestler, the kick-boxer,...etc.

It used to be that only SNK was the major SF2 clone maker, but now Data East,
Namco, Kaneko, Sega, and others are all coming out with their own.
The same bothersome trend has migrated into the home video game systems as
well. I dunno, SF2 was great, I loved it and pumped a fortune into those
machines, but enough is enough. I just wish that some creativity will finally
return to video games, both arcade and home.

Enough of my griping....

SEGA VS SNES (4/2/93)
>that many compared to SNES games. As said before on other posts Sega lives in
>Nintendo shadow. Sonic better than Mario. Nintendon't?! 16 Bit leader. They
>have got to prove to everyone that they are better than their competition.

Sega lives in Nintendo's shadow? The tables are slowly turning. In the
Starfox ad there was a comment like "why go to the next level when you can
go light years beyond" or something like that. This is the first time I've
heard Nintendo make any sort of reference to Sega, whether indirectly or not.
Nintendo has always had this arrogant attitude that all other companies are
insignificant compared to them. Well that Starfox ad is evidence that they
certainly aren't ignoring Sega anymore... In comparison Sega has stopped most
of their ads that make any direct mention of Nintendo... they don't need to
anymore. Sega IS the 16-bit leader and everyone, including Nintendo knows that
now and they don't have to prove it anymore.
PS - You can tell that the SNES is superior to the Genesis by simply
counting the number of buttons on the controller :) :) :) :) x10000.

My opinion of Sega...... (6/11/93)

Well ok, then answer me this! Why does Nintendo never released any official
specs for the System? Please do not bring up that ridiculous drawing in
EGM! I mean damn my wife even knew it was a load of crap! Why wasn't it
at CES? (We know how Nintendo likes to show things off) I mean it's not
like they've done this type of thing before. As I said before I received
a letter stating that they would have a CD-Rom out for X-Mas '92! It
didn't happen. Even EGM commented on this "Vapor-ware" but unlike
EGM, I'm not going to get all excited about some unofficial pseudo-specs
that I could have drawn myself. I'm not saying it's a hoax but if it
walks like a duck, quacks like a duck........
Oh really, and you actually believe a Nintendo sales rep!? Please, there
have been to many conflicitng reports of when the 'Elusive' SNES CD-rom will
show up. People at the CES said it was a HOAX and there were no plans to
make one. Not to mention Nintendo flat out LYING about having a CD-rom just
to try and take the impact off of Sega's introduction of the Sega-CD. Face
it Nintendo got caught with it's pants down AGAIN!

>The thing is, they don't even feel threatened by Sega's Mega-CD. I
>for one don't blame them because from what I've seen so far, the
>Mega-CD is a pile of shit.

Why don't they feel threatened? Is it becasue their non-existant SNES
CD-rom is so much better? Nintendo feels that CD-rom games are not the wave
of the future. The reason being I am sure is that they that it is too late
to get into CD-rom gaming with the release of the Sega CD and the 3d0.

>When it came out it was good, but the SNES is better and it
>shouldn't be. Sega have more going for them and should get their
>act together on the graphics front and use a better chip for their
>next efforts.

Hmm lets see here, the Sega Channel, Sega Genesis's installed on Japan Air
flights from Tokyo to New York and Tokyo to Los Angeles, Sega CD/Mega Drive,
Sega VR helmet, Sega/AT&T joint modem gaming venture....

Now lets go the Nintendo side... hmmmmmmm SFX chip, more propaganda about
the SNES CD-rom...

Well it looks to me as if Sega HAS got their act together.
Just remember
GRAPHIX are not everything. I would rather had a game that had great
gameplay and mediocre graphics than a game with great graphics and horrid
gameplay.

It's always fun to go through old Usenet posts. A part of me wishes I were a little older, so I could have joined them.

I love how articulate people were on the Internet back then. As the barrier of entry to the Internet lowered, our language and interpersonal skills did, too. :(

Ladies and gentlemen, conclusive proof that people whining about how gamers complain too much on the internet in this generation are talking out of their arses. Gamers complain too much on the internet in EVERY generation.

Or the playground, but yeah, same shit, different generation it seems!

(it's funny because in early 1990 it EXPLODES with posts fawning over the glory of the ATARI LYNX, NEXT GENERATION GAMING IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND)

So it was that era's Vita lol.

I'll forever rember the time, dont remember the year, I was a video game rental store and on his way out a guy started berating the poor clueless female clerk over why they carried TG-16 games. "Why do you guys even carry that crap! dont you know that system isn't even 16 bits??!!".

Back then a common theme of Genesis fans was that the TG-16 wasn't a "true" 16 bit system (it had a 8 bit CPU and 16 bit GPU or something like that).

System wars go back a long way...

I want to travel back in time, sneak up to one of those guys and whisper to him: "sega will go third party, making games for nintendo, then they die."

The one that always gets me is that every gen, there's someone moaning about this gen bringing in an easily duped casual crowd, thanks to shallow, disgusting means such as fancy graphics, advertising, box artwork, CG cutscenes, etc.

The best part is that usually, the people who got on board with said decried machines see themselves as hardcore 2 gens later and describe these machines as a golden age.

Anyway, we really shouldn't open that can of worms. Ugh, I won't search for my usenet posts.
