Funny... the comedian pictured above vowed to stop using the word in his comedy.
Being black, I've noticed the black community is very split on it because it's obviously a bad word but a lot of people use it in everyday language. It's not used with ill intent though and I think that's why it's hard for a lot of blacks to stop saying it.
I use it sometimes but not as much as I used to. It's a strange word with too much history behind it and the older I get, the more I don't like using it.
When you get down to the nitty-gritty though, it's a word nobody has to ever use in any situation... I won't be stumped to find another word to replace it.
There is definitely something to be said that it being a taboo word for whites to use actually keeps it powerful and dangerous. Something that I really don't think is good even though I'm not unhappy with the current status of the word.
Being white, I'm more than happy to cede control over to people of colour to decide what should be done though. As the South Park episode wonderfully put it: "I get it: I don't get it."
hey, some people just like to get drunk and scream "nigger" at the top of their lungs, in publick, to no one in particular. Just eases the tension. Who are we to judge?
