what do you mean by 'what a great comeback'?

I was merely pointing out that you forgot about arguably the greatest player ever because you only care to look at statistics.

Yeah Kallis would be among the best but nowhere near the matchwinner or crowd pleaser as any of the other great all rounders (Sobers, Miller, Khan, Botham) that come to mind.

And you just completely disregard statistics so you can just make up whatever opinion you like. I'm just ignoring the comment about being a crowd pleaser as it is irrelevant to this discussion.

Kallis is every bit as good as the players you listed. In fact with the exception of probably sobers i would take Kallis before all of them.

Warne wisdom.

If I'm a fast bowler, I want to bowl fast.
If I'm a swing bowler, I want to swing the ball.
If I'm a spin bowler, I want to spin the ball.

I suspect he has that written down somewhere.

Probably written down on his left hand, just so he doesn't smudge it out when he gets new messages and uses his right hand.

But I thought Murali was a wanker? He looks like a serial masturbator.

I guess if my profession demanded forearm and wrist strength, I would take my wanking more seriously.

You sure it's not the other way around? Maybe you should contemplate a career as a wrist spinner ;)

I will write up a scholarship proposal to send to the AIS. Give me optimal wanking conditions for three years and I will turn into a wicket-taker.

Beautiful from Strauss.

no I don't completely ignore or disregard statistics, never said I did.

Irfan and others only look at statistics, which is not how you should judge a player.

And pleasing the crowd is pretty critical to being a great player, pleasing the crowd can swing the momentum of a match and is what makes the greats memorable. Of the greats to have played in my time there would be only a couple who would qualify: Tendulkar, Warne, and Lara. Kallis is not on the same level as those three although with statistics it looks like he could be compared.

I agree it is hard to compare players of different eras but:

Miller was a better bowler but a worse batsmen than Kallis compared to their contemporaries. However, Miller wasn't just a professional cricketer - he played VFL football, was offered a trial for Major League Baseball and fought in the war as a pilot. Miller was a great of his era, Kallis isn't.

Imran Khan won a world cup as captain at 39 years old, he was also their best batsman at that world cup. Kallis hasn't inspired or influenced Sth Africa to such heights yet.

Botham was a match winner, game changer and knighted for his services to cricket. He achieved the feat of a five-for and a century in the same test match 5 times, Kallis and Khan have done it only twice (and they are the next best). Beefy is also the only person to have scored a century and and a ten-for in the same match. I cant see Kallis getting that record now.

I would take all three of the above as my all rounder before Kallis as well as Sobers.

Please, when I'm pointing out unbeatable stats doesnt mean it is the only yardstick I go by. If you're accusing me of pointing out stats then the blame also lies with you and your possie with the 0.04-less-than-hundred posts as well as others. :lol

Stats is one way (not the only) of quantifying a player, get over it.

The way England is batting, they will get over 200 today in the remaining 34 overs .. even if they slow down, the lead will be less than 100 with 3 more gorgeous looking days ahead. Result definitely possible.

Just to nitpick, you mean qualifying. Quantifying is what you all seem to be arguing against :|

Gee-wiz, just watching foxtel and saw an ad for the Cricket Superstar tv show (think Australian Idol for cricket).

Cricket Australia is getting really desparate, the winner gets a 4 month scholarship at the Centre of Excellence.

Any aussies gonna try out for it? I went to check out the application but I am too old...

I agree some people bring up the Bradman stat regularly but that is because it is the easiest way to define the 'best ever'. However, it is not the only reason why Bradman is the best ever, its just the easiest to quote.

And I know you probably just genuinely forgot about the rest of the other great all rounders, but I just get fired up when I hear people talk about Kallis as being the greatest all rounder of all time.

I like how the last four points, the most important, are relegated to the slum compared to being late or delayed.
