PAL can do component. Only NTSC games can use progressive without patching though.
So 480i only with component for PAL without patching? Crazy, 480p is the main reason for component. Nintendo sure was crazy about image quality in those years.

Yeh, it's not a limitation of the system though, just the games.

I just use NTSC games mostly on my PAL 'cube, so progressive works just fine like that. Back in the day I used a Freeloader but now I just have a Xeno modchip so I don't have to disc swap. Using Swiss I think you can enable progressive on PAL games but I haven't tried it myself.

Bizarre decisions by Nintendo for sure.

It's not really patching, it's just forcing the output mode. Done on a hardware level, not game level, though without forcing it the software specifies the output mode. All games are redered at 480p (ish) so it's pretty much flawless. PAL cubes can do it fine, but I guess they sidn't bother since 99.999% of PAL TVs didn't do progressive scan at the time (PAL TV images were always a lot more stable than NTSC, so it wasn't as required anywhere near as much as the messy NTSC image).

Everyone always says '480p is the main reason for component' but I'd say vastly superior colour separation is the main reason. 480i via component would still be a vastly better picture than 480p via composite.

It works on PAL 64s but the image is usually too bright or something. This can be fixed by modding either the console or cable. Some shops online sell a specially modded cable.
You;ve got it the wrong way around.

PAL SNES does RGB, in fact it was the main output cable in many PAL countries and came in the box. But it puts out a very hot signal, which is fine since official PAL RGB cables had capacitors/resistors in them that adjusted the image accordingly. NTSC SNESes also output RGB, but a lower level signal that doesn't require the capacitors/resistors, so it will look vey dark if using a PAL RGB cable. So technically it's the NTSC machine that requires a modded cable, it's just that NTSC RGB cables are the defacto standard now by boutique producers, since most retro gamers use a Super Famicom.

NO N64s output RGB without modding. Only certain early NTSC and French PAL models are easily modded, but other models can be with a much more complex mod. NTSC N64s do svideo, PAL machines do not.

Bought this baby factory sealed with pedals and everything.

I should be getting it in a few days. Mainly got it for F-Zero GX as I've never played it with a wheel. I've mastered that game and still play it every now and then and I'm sure playing it with a wheel will make it seem brand new again.

There are pretty much no gameplay videos with this wheel which is a bit disappointing so I'm thinking about doing a let's play.

That wheel looks nice. I never knew there was a wheel released for GCN. Excited to see your video.

If you look back to the original discussion, I was talking about s-video, not RGB.

I already know all that stuff about RGB cos I own and use them all, lol :P

Edit: Looks like the custom s-vid cable for PAL N64 also works fine with a PAL SNES so at least you could get one cable to cover both, Martin5000.

It's no 480p, but video quality over Component is WAY nicer than composite.

But composite shouldn't even be in the question. PAL GameCube supports RGB via scart.

Unless you are going to be forcing 480p via homebrew, no PAL GameCube owner should buy component cables as a £3 RGB scart cable will give you basically the same result.

That's easier said in Europe and UK, but here in NZ/Australia we never really used RGB SCART. The first display I owned with a SCART socket was my first PVM. You can find the odd set with it but it was pretty unknown here. Couple that with the high cost of component cables and you'd probably find most people here used composite for their 'cube. Bleh but true.

Ohh never knew that. I assumed Australia and NZ were part of the RGB master race too

Pity none of us were part of the 60hz master race though

Naw man, we really drew the short straw here, lol.

My family was kinda poor too so we didn't even have composite inputs when we got the Gamecube. RF only, 14 inch CRT, loool.

Probably why I overcompensate now and obsess over these things...

Ah well there I go for not looking back over history.

Same here, I was RF on N64. It was all that was available. I had a job and got a 68cm Panasonic with component mid-Gamecube though. Mind-melting going almost straight from RF to component (I had composite for a little while). And GCN component to boot, the best analogue RGB/Component image a console has ever produced to this day.

I actually played through quite a few NES and SNES games in black and white, because I wasn't allowed to use the main TV and my hand me down was a B&W. Solstice and Zelda 3 were nightmares with their coloured potions!

Thanks! I'm in that state where I have to constantly track the package out of impatience.

Everyone who has used the wheel with F-Zero GX or any compatible game actually have said it's fantastic. It actually delivers true force feedback as in, if you hit a railing, the wheel reacts to it. If you're driving over slippery terrain, the wheel becomes more loose. It's pretty amazing that a wheel like this was released way back then.

Logitech worked closely with Nintendo on it which is why it is officially licensed and was marketed pretty heavily back then. Well, as far as steering wheel accessories go. I don't know if anyone remembers but Nintendo did an ad campaign called, 'Who Are You?' and they went to malls around the U.S. and had 8-player Mario Kart Double Dash LAN setups and each setup had this wheel with pedals.

I'm surprised this wheel isn't lauded for considering the games it supports and how good it is. It's pretty rare to find one with pedals now days. Amazon has a few wheels in stock but no pedals. Maybe it's because steering wheels in general are a pretty niche accessory so no matter how good one is, it might never get mainstream appeal.

I remember the RF switch, used to have it for my SNES back in the day. It's what came in the box and we didn't know any better at the time.

I'm selling my Toshiba 28ZD26P. It's a CRT 28" 16:9 480p with component input Y-Pb-Pr.

Now is hooked my Nintendo Wii via component cable. The only problem is that I live in Italy.

If someone has some interest please send me a private message. I have to sell it because I'm moving in a small flat.

This tv has an outstanding picture quality ;)

Not really the thread for this

That sounds pretty nice. My only experience with GCN steering wheels was a crappy Multi-platform ps2/Xbox/GameCube one from madcatz :/

So after like a month of waiting, my Gamecube D-terminal cable finally came in this weekend! I had posted in the N64 thread, but I've started doing a short series of videos on my YouTube channel doing output comparisons for the various "retro" systems, so I decided to start working on the Gamecube video this weekend.

I'm thinking it's gonna be a 3-parter, but here's the first part (there's no commentary or voiceover... just some text at the end about my thoughts on what I would go with):

Pretty ballsy to show the cable connector. I would assume they THINK they have a GameCube cable, and got super excited when they looked up prices.

Moved a week and half ago. Could find my component cables (which I bought as part of a GCN and 10 game package for ~$250 a couple years back since my original cables and cube were stolen a decade ago).

Heart sank when I remembered these things for for $200 on eBay themselves now...

Found the cables in Wii U box!

lmao, isn't that a 3rd-party Playstation cable?

Yes, Gamecube component cable looks nothing like that, lol.

Pretty ballsy to show the cable connector. I would assume they THINK they have a GameCube cable, and got super excited when they looked up prices.

I did contact the seller and politely informed them that cable wasn't a GameCube component cable. He responded back and said he will add pictures to show the cable connecting to the GameCube.

Nothing uploaded yet.

EDIT: He responded to me again. He uploaded a third picture and said "It is indeed GameCube. Pictures uploaded to show it connected to the system. Thanks."

When I see his new picture, I can't even tell what it is plugged into.

If you look closely you can see the vents under the connector so it looks like the back of a Gamecube. I don't have component cables, but don't they get connected through the digital AV out which is next to the port he has this cable plugged into?

Yes and yes. He just shoved PS2 Cables into a gamecube analog port. lol.

I am tempted to buy the cable to make him go through the returns process with a customer. It is asinine when he disregards kind messages letting him know he is misrepresenting his item greatly

I responded to him with this RIGHT after he told me the new picture was uploaded.

Cool. But again, just being polite and telling you that is not a GameCube component cable. There is only ONE version of that cable. Check the other eBay auctions. Your connector and cable are different.

There are games specifically designed for this wheel and I've been looking at a handful of titles that have my interest. R Racing Evolution is the one I'm most interested but there aren't that many new impressions on it and I'm wondering if it still holds up.
I've got one of those wheels (without the pedals) and R Racing Evolution. I've not played it for aaaaages but it's one of my favourite racers. That I still own it is testament to its quality. The handling takes a bt of getting used to, because it's arcadey and it's got a bit of a unique feeling. But if you stick with it you'll learn its intricacies and hopefully like it.

I don't even remember what I had in my collection.

Jet on release day
Waverace
Starwars
RE
RE0
Zelo OOT / WW
Metroid
Sunshine

Traded it into Gamestop for $200 and that was that.
Every now and then I get sad. But I barely have enough time to keep up with Xbox now.

If those component cables are in such high demand, were knock offs made?

If you cant spare the effort to collect, and you have WiiU, you can just hack it to run Nintendont. Dont even worry about component cables, because you got WiiU HDMI putting out digital RGB and digital audio to boot.

Yes and yes. He just shoved PS2 Cables into a gamecube analog port. lol.

Eh. I have a third party component cable compatible with the xbox,ps2 and wii. Once I was plugging the Wii and I couldn't understand why the Wii wouldn't turn on with the cable plugged in. Playstation cables shouldn't be allowed to fit so nicely into Nintendo AV sockets.

Ohh never knew that. I assumed Australia and NZ were part of the RGB master race too

Yeah I know. It wasn't until games started to ask me about whether I wanted to game to run at 50hz or 60hz did I realise..."Damn, we got boned".

Check out this "rare" GameCube component cable. Buy it now for $202!

What were you doing when it stopped working? Does the main menu still come up? Is it making noises? I can't tell here at work.

Well I disassembled it completely and cleand it.
Reassembled it and every thing worked fine.
The gamecube always had some disc reading errors so I tried to clean the lens with a q-tip and alcohol.

After the cleaning it wouldn't read any disk

So I did a little research and found it has to be the laser!

http://abload.de/image.php?img=img_11536ru1k.jpg

One gamecube is a working one of a friend. With this crazy "building" I let the other gamecube read the disc and my one spin.
And yes my gmecube started to spin.

So after that I looked at the lens and saw this:
My Gamecube:

My lens became cloudy
