The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Just ordered Custom Robo off of Amazon and should be delivered by next week. And while I am waiting, I was wondering if anyone have any experience with this game that they would like to talk about. Is the game good? Is the story alright?

Hey

Just a quick question. Should Star Wars Rebel Strike have a weird video noise? It's very noticeable on the sky and stuff.
What region and what cables are you use? I mention this as I remember I would get weird noise (things like horizontal transparent purple bars) on Ocarina of Time Master Quest when playing on RGB SCART if the colour resolution of the TV was set to high instead of normal. It also only affected that particular game which made all the stranger (I guess Majora's Mask in Zelda Collector's Edition too but I was one of those weird people who got that just to play Zelda 1).

So I want to optimize my GBA Player experience and I already have component cables. I recall that I need an SD Medial Launcher but I am in the US and can't seem to find one on the Datel/Code Junkies website. It keeps sending me to the UK/EU page. What are my solutions?

I got Tube Slider yesterday, and while it's no F-Zero GX, I'm surprised by how much I'm liking it. The races can get very intense and it looks pretty good. Anyone else a fan?

I remember wanting that game back when I was a kid. Had it on my list of games to get one summer (at least I think it was summer). Only reason I was excited was because I heard it was like GX. I never did get to play it. Your post reminds me that I should look for it.

Anyone interested in buying my Tales of Symphonia Gamecube that's modded so it can play US and JP games? PM me if you're interested.

Yeah I think it's a pretty alright game if your expectations are in check. I still think it may have started out its life as an F-Zero game since Nd Cube's previous title was Maximum Velocity on GBA.

I am using a PAL Wii, with an NTSC copy of the game. I don't think its meant to look like this, hard to explain exactly, noise is the best term I think.

The control schemes is almost the same, but that's where the similarities end. You can never fall off the track in Tube Slider since all of them are transparent tubes (duh), there's no combat (closest being you can steal other competitors boost energy to add to your own) and it's much slower and weightier. The tone and mechanical design is very different too.

Wouldn't pay more than $20 for it but it's fun for what it is.

So got to play with my new component cables tonight.

Booted up my GC with F-Zero via my SNES RGB 21-JP through the Framemeister to get a reference then switched over to the GC component cables.

:O

Holy shit. As someone who has to suffer through composhite throughout the GC's heyday, this was stunning. I have never seen a GameCube put out such a nice picture.

Then the picture suddenly dropped out.

:(

But a wiggle of the base of the component cables connector at the back of the GC brought it straight back.

:D

I kinda hope it was a one off freak occurrence or they are commonly known to have a bit of play in the connection. I don't want to believe I have been given bum cables or I am straight up punching someone.

What's the maximum size memory card Nintendo made? I've got a 16x Mad Catz one and a the 4x Mad Catz one I've had since I was was a kid, but I'd like to get an official one too.

1019 blocks was the official maximum iirc
it's a light gray/off white color.

The white 1019 card was the biggest official card Nintendo made but it was released in the states, Japan didn't get it the biggest they got was the 251. Not sure about europe though, they might of gotten the 1019 block card but i don't remember seeing it here.

I'm confused - GameCube can output RGB w/ a snes jp-21 cable through the FM? How does it look?

I've had my original GameCube for ages but haven't hooked it up because I no longer have component cables.

Working on a complete Tom Clancy collection for GameCube. Found this gem at a local used video game store while I am out-of-town for work.

I think I just need Rainbow Six Lockdown. I did find it at a store a long time ago, but it was just the disc.

no, it was never released here. i got three 1019 mem cards. one from big ben (sometimes i have to switch the cube on and off until it gets connected to the cube, but from 2002-2012 i never had problems with it) one was a crystal one, but i gave that away since it had problems from the start and the last one i got 2009 from ebay-US for 15bucks. never used it though, i never even filled the initial big ben one with all the games i have (around 40 in total but i use 3 cards since i have PAL,US,JP games).

Stickers on game cases make me cry.

I use Goo Gone. Works pretty well.

Yeah it works, but if a sticker has been on there long enough it creates a destruction to the plastic lining of the case no matter what and makes it look foggy and gross. Also stickers on the actual art insert is the ultimate sin.

I have like 10 extra GC cases and one or two extra 2-disc cases. If I were to get a game that had some nasty stickers I'd be fine with it as long as everything else was in good shape.

Probably takes a really weird sort of person to have a collection of empty game cases. Also have some PSP and Wii U cases.

And the 1019 memory cards apparently have issues with certain games. Also heard they are more likely to get corrupted. Fortunately it is 2015 so that doesn't matter, you can easily back up GC memory cards with Wii homebrew, or probably other methods.

I'm a huge futuristic racing game fan so I bought Tube Slider at some point in the later '00s or so, but didn't like it much on my first impression, so I never did play much of it. The game feels kind of slow and lacking. It's not a bad game, but compared to F-Zero, or Wipeout, or Extreme-G, or Ballistics, it's not as good. Ballistics particularly makes Tube Slider look bad, considering how that's one of the few other tube-racing games and it's INCREDIBLY fast and technical. Maybe being a PC game it can do things a console game couldn't, but still.

That said, my favorite 6th-generation-exclusive console racing game (that is, excluding San Francisco Rush 2049, my favorite racing game ever but also available on the N64) is XGRA: Extreme-G Racing Association. I might be the only one who loves the game that much, but I do! Then F-Zero GX would be second.

Yeah, ever since my 1019 card failed and corrupted itself some years back, permanently becoming unusable, I've steered clear of those things. It's kind of a hassle, but for durability I'd highly recommend just getting a pile of 251 cards. They are reliable and won't die on you.

Did you have by any chance one of these games on it, known for having compatibility issues?

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/memorycard1019.jsp

For what it's worth: I've been using one since '08 and never had problems with it whatsoever (40+games on it). It also loads/saves to save files much faster than my 251.

Having tried both just now I can confirm that in this rare instance, component poo-poos all over RGB for GameCube.

It does if you are using NTSC hardware, given that you have access to 480p. Someone donated my official Cube RGB SCART cable to me and the 480i looks baller on my PVM-20M4E.

But of course, if you're using modern display tech the comp cable is the way to go.

dont mix jp,us,pal games on it.
i heard the nba games had issues with bigger memorycards. i never had a nba game so i dont know it...

i think the 251 from nintendo were the best and fastest memorycards since they didnt corrupt.

but i mainly used my big ben 1019 card. still got my sealed nintendo one...

Interesting info about the 1019 cards. I have two of those and a black 251. I think I'll stick to the 251 going forward...worried about corrupting saves.

Is it only Nintendo 1019 cards that have problems or all that are above 251? I've got a 1019 Mad Catz that I bought recently because my 59 Mad Catz from 2002 is still going strong, but if all 1019 cards have problems I'll get a 251 Nintendo.

Yeah all the high capacity cards seem to have issues.

Mixing US and PAL games should work fine. You should never mix JP and US/PAL games though because of character set problems.

And because you can't mix memory cards.

As I recall you can save PAL and US games onto the same card just fine, but if you insert a JP formatted memory card it'll ask you to reformat it and vice versa.

I do have Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Darkened Skye, but no, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that one day the card became totally unusable, and when I put it in the system it just reads as corrupt. You cannot access any data on the card, cannot reformat it to use it again, or anything, it's just a useless lump of plastic.

Afterwards I heard of problems with 1019 cards when used in Wiis (that they supposedly might die more often in Wiis than GCs), but I didn't have a Wii yet when the card died on me in '08 or '09, so that wasn't the cause.

So yeah, now I have five 251 cards instead. No issues with those.

do you already have a freeloader? can you post a pic?
I need a freeloader...
