The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Yes, but Metroid Prime runs in 540x528 internally, as the gamecube's internal framebuffer's maximum resolution is 640x480 @60Hz (NTSC) or 640x528 @50Hz (PAL). So you get a 720x576 picture consisting of added black pixels to comply the video standard.
Though Metroid Prime is optomized (as is Pikmin 1), you only get 48 lines of vertical resolution increase and a decrease in Hz; I wonder if the trade off is worth it because the image appears a bit squashed vertically on HDTV's due to the scaling as opposed to its NTSC equivalent.

Not entirely sure on the squashed image, but it seems plausible to mee you would additionally need to scale the picture horizontally in order to maintain proper aspect ratio.
True if using a TV's own scaler, buy you could scale it however you liked via a Frameister to undo any squashing during upscaling (though only if doing non-integer upscaling).

The value I saw for it back in the day was on a PAL CRT, you could clearly see more detail and less aliasing in 50Hz, and it was super disappointing that Prime 2 was 60Hz only - it was rushed so they could get it out in time for Christmas, as the original Prime missed Christmas in PAL land.

Yes but that doesn't make interlaced images trash IQ, it just means most modern devices can't handle the most common video mode of all time very well. 480i was literally the perfect resolution for a 2001 console and the absolute best IQ 99.99% of screens around at that time could display.
Yes, however, CRTs are probably the best for it, because on anything else interlacing becomes a issue because it's just 240 lines switching between even and odd lines every second making it not as good as progressive. I am thankful interlacing res aren't the norm anymore, I mean back then when viewed on a CRT it isn't bad, but not ideal nowadays, and TBH it's never ideal in the long run.

The reason deinterlacers exist is because of that res, if it weren't for that they might not exist(at least for that option) because there would be nothing to detinterlace without interlacing. In fact I wish 480p was more common on the PS2. The Dreamcast and Xbox had 480p as a standard for a lot of games(I would know as I capture a lot of games on those systems plus most are 480p anyways), and there were more 480p Gamecube games than PS2 so I wonder about that. Sure, not everyone had a 480p TV back then for obvious reasons, but 480p should had been a choice for most games.

I can capture 240p flawlessly, and any other resolutions that are progressive scan too. For 480i I need an upscaler/deinterlacer to get a good picture and 60FPS for my capture cards. That's why I don't like to capture PS2 games, because it's always an extra step before the capturing. I normally go for an Xbox or Gamecube version of a game unless they're 480i on that system or 480p on PS2.

480i on 240p games are just...ugh. Dem lines, they can look nasty in motion, definitely when captured.

So overall, still good for CRTs but nowadays I try to avoid it whenever I can, or just have to deinterlace if I don't have any other choice.

Ebay the best place to offload Gamecube stuff? Unfortunately I've been out of work now for a couple months and Im thinking I'm gonna have to sell off some stuff. Gonna avoid it as long as I can, but I'd like to atleast know what my options are.

eBay, mercari, offer up, Craigslist, bst thread

Thanks for the response, never heard of mercari or offer up. Going to look into them. Got a couple good consoles.

As someone who's sold tons of gaming related items: GAF B/S/T is the best. The advantage Ebay has is speed but the fees are a downer for both buyers and sellers and there's less community watch and pleasantries. Offer up's strength is personal communication/transaction, and cash. However, there's a FLOOD of reseller vultures, and no lack of low ballers and flakers.

GAF is just the most well ballanced place to sell.

So here is the orange cube new in box. Pretty pleased with it; no markings, discoloration or scratches, not even on the bottom of the controller. Also complete with everything; new in box indeed. The only (very small) issue I have with it is it is the DOL 101; it lacks the digital-out port on the back. Might replace it in the future with a dol 001 new in box :P. Sadly only half joking on that one ;). Still absolutely collection worthy though.

And back in the box ;)

So, I wanna do the thug life of a trucker and I'm trying to find out which console version of 18 Wheeler is the superior one. An IGN review mentions the Gamecube version is based on the PS2 port and has some weird texture pop-in going on, but I don't know if that problem is also present on the aforementioned PS2 port. Assuming any of you were crazy enough to get and try more than one version, which one would you say is the superior version: Dreamcast, PS2, or Gamecube?

I adore my orange GC w/ matching orange GB Player and orange GBA. Definitely one of my favorite consoles from an aesthetic perspective, period.

Looking forward to the day where people won't be embarrassed by their tech being a color other than black or white. It'll happen.

I wonder if the Xbox design lab will eventually extend to consoles because I would love to see a market for high-quality, colorful, official consoles.

OOh that is nice!

Make sure to get a matching new-in-box orange GameBoy Player.

Yes but that means I will have to seek out NIB purple/grey/black/platinum with matching colour gameboy player, preferably the pack in with the cube. This never ends, does it :)

I was looking through some of my old stuff and found a GC Action Replay disc with AR memory card

Looking online, it seems like they sell for $50+, what is it about these that makes it valuable? Homebrew?

an action replay lets you access the F-Zero AX content in F-Zero GX, for example.

So, I'm looking for a fabric dust-cover for my GameCube + GameBoy Player, and I found one seller on eBay that has a bunch of them on sale. While I wait for her/his reply - I wanted to know about colors available and other stuff - I figured I could ask here too. Any of you guys has better suggestions/recommendations?

So I just found out that my Metroid Prime / Windwaker combo might be worth some money. I got it at a local pawn shop back in 2007 and never really played it. It's in the original box and everything is there except the Windwaker manual.

Pricecharting says it could be worth up to $450 but that seems ridiculous. Any of you know what it might be valued at?

Heads up for anyone that collects Japanese gamecube games. Dan at www.retroprotection.com has gotten around to making box protectors for the slightly fatter Japanese double disk game boxes so now you can get those protected as well.

Considering how great the single disk protectors are i can't wait to get the last 9 in my collection finally safe & protected, means all my biohazard sleeves will finally be safe and the most valuable game in my collection which is the club nintendo zelda collection will be kept pristine too.

Woah, that's fantastic news! I need to grab me some of those. Thanks for the heads up!

They are a bit more expensive than the singles as he ordered a smaller amount of them which is understandable as theres probably only 10 or so double disk games in the Jpn library so nobody is going to need large amounts of them.

Pricecharting tracks sold games, so that would be correct. If it sells for a price, then that's the value imo.

I find it to pretty inaccurate compared to just looking at sold ebay prices. It doesnt seem to keep up witn trending prices and sometimes tracks with outliers that are either too high or too low.

Baten Kaitos 2
Biohazard 0, 1, 4, X
Harvest Moon for girls (don't remember the correct title atm)
Dragon Drive D-Masters Shot
Enter The Matrix
Goldeneye Dark Agent
Killer 7
Zelda Collection
Lotr 1
Lupin III
Medal of Honor Rising Sun
Metal Gear Sold TS
R:Racing Evolution
Tales of Symphonia

Thanks for the heads up on the protectors, will order some :)

I can never understand how the Gamecube was such a failure when it has that awesome library of games, coupled with amazing looking console designs like this.

the same reason since the nes-days.

n64,gc,wii, wii u have an amazing library. people understand that once a certain amount of time has passed.

i was so baffled to see people talking in high regards about wind waker hd on wii u.

when wind waker was announced/released, zelda fans went nuts saying that they will never ever play zelda again, because the game looks so childish and has nothing to do with a cool zelda anymore.

how time can change the perception of the game.

i fucking love every game released from nintendo on their systems.

the downside slowly has started with digital and DLC:
i dont have the feeling that we will see the same output of games as back then. digital sells more and faster and better than retail stuff.

i also miss coloured booklets...
remember the nes-booklets?
http://www.gamesdatabase.org/Media/...ted/Super_Mario_Bros._3_-_1990_-_Nintendo.pdf

sometimes in the booklets there were more information than in the game itself!

its just two games combined in one box, isnt it? or are both games on one disc?

I've been replaying some of my Gamecube games of late.

They age really well. I was actually a bit a Gamecube hater in the day, mostly due the lackluster Zelda and Mario sequels, but I think it does well in hindsight--F-Zero GX, Melee, Prime, Super Monkey Ball, TTYD, all killers of that generation.

Is there a way to get Gamecube saves online and transfer them to my old memory cards? I sold my older memory cards, which had my old Melee save. I don't know how I missed that.

I forgot how annoying unlocking everything was.

I agree that Sunshine and Wind Waker are a step below normal 3D Mario/Zelda-quality, and I have always meant that the Gamecube was Nintendos weakest console for this reason. But man, that F-Zero GX and Metroid Prime and the Resident Evils. So much godness on this purple lunchbox :)

The discs and manual are exactly the same as the standard retail releases. The only thing different is the artwork. Makes it really hard to justify the prices it brings.

Correct. The discs and manuals are the same, so you're paying for the case that fits 2 discs, as well as the split artwork on the front and back. Seems pretty inflated to me, but it was pretty rare.

Hi GamecubeGAF,
i just ordered a copy of starfox assault and an extra copy of starfox adventures.

never played both... anyone play Starfox Adventures and any impressions of it?

Star Fox Adventures is pretty decent, yes. Graphics are amazing @60fps. Story could be better and music is good. Gameplay is unsurprising but enjoyable nonetheless; a bit like zelda indeed. Arwing levels are dissapointing though (could have left out entirely).

Starfox Assault I do not remember much of it so take that as you will. What I do remember is the first level being absolutely amazing, but after that the games takes a nosedive. Amazing soundtrack though.

Just found out my US Cubivore would perform quite well on eBay (not that I have any plan to sell it).
Aside from (I guess?) the usual stack of RPG, which other games jumped up in price, during the past few years? I remember seeing a PAL copy of Mario Baseball priced around 150/200 euros, a few weeks ago, but then the Italian seller turned out to be pretty dodgy, so I assumed that amount wasn't legit to begin with.
