The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Yes, it is the PAL games that barries the 480p output not the console.

Maybe if you use a NTSC game with a freeloader even a PAL machine can output 480p.

Yeah, quite a few games don't have progressive scan. And I thought Australia had SCART. Learned something today.

Well I'm just assuming they're the same as us here in New Zealand, but I've seen like one TV with a SCART input here in all my life. I always thought it was a European thing.

Edit: Geeze, Wikipedia has lists for everything don't they. GCN games with 480p/16:9
They have lists, but they're not 100% complete. For instance, Serious Sam for GC has 16:9 support (though not progressive scan), and that's not the only game not on that list that does. Still though, it's a great starting point.

Right next to my Wii and DS/3DS collection. Playing most of my Gamecube games in 480p progressive scan on Wii made me fall in love with em all over again. Seeing this thread makes me want to continue the great Gamecube hunt...but I dread seeing how much higher the prices are nowadays for what I need.

There's something odd about Nintendo games. I feel like I treasure them much more than any other companies products. Seeing how they keep their value as years go by, I am guessing I am not the only one who feels this way.

i did this back in the day, was just talking in an other topic about it. what a coincidence. i mean who has 4 GBAs?
This year, I went on eBay and spent a total of ~$200 USD on:

-4 GBA SPs, 4 GCN-to-GBA cables, and 4 (working) replacement GBA SP Batteries, and a GBA SP Charge Cradle that can charge the internal batteries as well.
-2 are the Backlit LED models, and 2 are the older (crappier) LCD models.
-I've gotten 3 other friends together 3 times since then and we're on the fourth level of Four Swords.

-Bonus! We also play "Pac-Man VS" on these, SO FUN! And my little nieces and nephews love the Pac-Man and Four Swords, so we all get to bond over that, it's lovely.

Here is my previous post about it (pic included).

I'm sorry. What?!! Where is this thread? I need to see this.

Even I didn't go THAT far...

The 4 Wavebirds were from eBay as well, but last year. Spent about $30-$40 on each, with matching receivers. (they were very good to good quality). The wavebirds are for Smash Bros Brawl: Project M.

Yes, and Wii image seems to be somehow filtered, not as sharp:

video05.jpg

Notice the shadow edges on the gold metalic areas of the Wii screen.

Other corners of the Internet have been suggesting that this might be a myth, and that the Wii wasn't actually set to 480p with component cables. In fact, this is the only image that gets used as proof that the GC has better component video than the Wii. Here are Wind Waker comparison pics from someone who says otherwise:

wiir.png

He doesn't say which one is which, just to make his point, but you can find out by looking at the fille names of the images.

So, I have a request. Can someone (with the necessary hardware) do a comparison themselves? Pictures would be nice, preferably of a menu screen or other still image. Also, preferably with official Nintendo component cable for the Wii, as quality tends to vary considerably for analog cables. If not Nintendo, then MadCatz is also okay.

All I can do is zoom with my phone, browsing at work here, but the top one looks better to me. When I get my GC cables I'll try do my own comparison.

I have the Nyko component cables for the Wii and the official comp. cable for the GC. What can say right now is that I've always loathed the blurry PQ from the Wii despite it putting out 480p. The GC however looks sharp in 480p.

I would try to source an official comp cable for the Wii, but I really don't wanna spend more money on the system I care least for in my collection...

Edit:

Switching between these 2 images in different tabs, I can see that the second image has worse black levels and edges are less defined in the giant Zelda logo than the first image.

It's kind of ironic that they are selling them in Australia but PAL GCNs can't even output 480p. Still improves picture quality, but probably not significantly over SCART.

And I'm probably just going to bite the bullet on another GCN + S-Video cable. Will just have to compare it myself.

Would component even improve over SCART at SD resolutions? Component isn't full RGB, but SCART RGB is.
RGB separates Red, Blue and Green signals, whereas Component only separates Chroma (color) and Luma (brightness/tone).

Not exactly true. RGB really gives you three color signals. zero intensity for each component gives the darkest color (no light, considered the black), and full intensity of each gives a White. Everything in the middle gives you the intensity of that color.

YPBPR is converted from the RGB video signal, which is split into three components: Y, PB, and PR. Y carries luma (brightness or luminance) and synchronization (sync) information. PB carries the difference between blue and luma (B − Y). PR carries the difference between red and luma (R − Y). Sending a green signal would be redundant, as it can be derived using the blue, red and luma information.

So both are ways to represent the same thing. I do think there is an edge for one of the methods over the other.

Knew the top was GC without looking at the image names. After that F-Zero close up, you can automatically tell that the GC component cables have a bit sharper quality than the Wii displaying the games.

I have always wanted an orange GameCube:

I dug through my collection the other day to work out exactly what I got for the £130 I paid for it in xmas 2003. I believe I got:

the console
Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition disc (free extra)
Metroid Prime Player's Choice
Resident Evil (managed to haggle for it in addition to the Zelda disc)
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Super Mario Sunshine Player's Choice
Super Monkey Ball

..and a 64mb memory card which later deleted all my saves.

That was probably one of the best xmas times ever though. Bomba consoles with good libraries make the best gifts.
I gotta admit that's a nice color.

Sega Soccer Slam was the last Sega made game I bought I believe.

WOW they said it would take weeks to arrive, but this is what was in the mailbox when I came home from work:

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I'm curious if I should just sell mine. It's doing nothing, and never will do anything again.

I got my component cables, but little did I realize that was only half the battle.

Now the real struggle is finding a Hori digital controller.

Are you me?

My other problem is also that I'm wishing I had gotten the Real version of Twilight Princess. I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and just dump a bunch of money on a used game for once. Usually I'm pretty good about trading/discovering/finding a good deal towards owning old games I want.

I guess ~$50 for Twilight Princess isn't too bad...

.

My PAL gamecube definitely did , you just had to use freeloader and play NTSC games to do so

If you're not spending more than what it released as, it's not too bad.

Sold my copy for around 20.

I'm seriously thinking of grabbing a copy of Twilight Princess on GameCube as well. Partly for collection purposes, partly to just play the original pre-Wii version. It goes for about $70+ AU in PAL though ._.

My component cables have yet to arrive, though they've been sent to a non-metro area so I'm sure they're coming.

TP on GC is post-Wii. It came out one month after the Wii release (pretty much to boost Wii sales at launch, obviously. :P) It's the superior version to me mainly because no waggle controls, but no 16:9 though. :(

In US I believe it was the same day, no? PAL-land, one week after! Japan? Sold online only by Nintendo lol.

I swear that my friends who got copies of TP GC on launch didn't have to order through Nintendo though. I'll have to ask each of them how they came by their copies.

I hear that Starfox Assault is not exactly the best game, but it fetches a high-ish price. Is this purely due to low distribution/being a late generation game, or is it actually worthwhile?

yeah, kinda wish idve jumped on TP for GC when gamestop had it nearby me for $30 but i was hoping for a B2G1 sale or something...next time i checked, they'd phased out all GC titles (and their online store doesn't seem to sell em, either...)

meaning, there goes my one cheap outlet for them, as they'd been helpful last year tracking down stuff like FE Path of Radiance...sucks, i had a few left to find too

Thanks very much guys. I just scored a component cable from Nintendo Australia as well. I think it was $46 including shipping to New South Wales.

The guy asked which forum I spotted this on so I guess they've noticed word getting out as well.

Damn, I wish I was the buyer. :P

Also since you brought up the Hori pad, I got curious.... the horror, the horror, the horror...

That's a hundred bills for a Dpad and few buttons.

oh-come-on-jim-carrey-31842336-184-197.gif

It's crazy how much they go for. I managed to get mine new and boxed from France for €35 shipped to New Zealand on eBay, but I had a daily listing coming through every day for like 3 years, lol. Still get that email every day and haven't seen one that cheap since either. My only regret is not buying both the purple and black. They had both but I wasn't earning any money back then so I could only get one.

lol. I imagine them calling Miyamoto and Iwata directly over a red dial tone phone. "Iwata-san, it's NeoGAF... they know..."

I just played Star Fox Assault for the first time tonight and I had the game for something like more than 1 year in my collection. Only had some loose time to play for an hour though.

Surprisingly better than what I expected, seriously, but I gotta say that my expectations for a SF experience 'à la 64' were low because...you know, Adventures.

I actually like Adventures, but I need to mentally clear every past SF titles out of my head to play it without being pissed.

So is Assault all the way like the first hour? If yes I could actually see myself doing it entirely then.

That's nothing. There's an American seller placing it at 150 and will accept no less than 120. Not including shipping. This is for something that was just selling on Yahoo auctions for just under 50 USD. Ridiculous.

How long until 100 is going to seem like a dream?

Still check random GS for cube games. They are 75% off now until they clear out of them. Which hopefully will happen for PS2 once June 1st hits.

is that how it works? every game i look for locally from their site says nothing within 100 miles of my house...sucks for those last few titles. i wish we could work out with other gaffers to have them pick up & ship for a few bucks extra, i'd be down!

and why June 1st?

Is it just me or do the Gamecube cases scratch easier (the outer plastic) than North American PS2 games? IF you're in PAL land this could be different; Japan uses different plastic for PS2 games so you might too.

I wish we had gotten the Japanese style GC cases.

It's not, but it's not a bad game overall, severely underrated in my opinion. The on foot missions don't overstay their welcome and the Arwing stages are very good. The story is not as charming as in SF64, but it does its job.

I don't. Cardboard easily gets ratty and gross; those sleeves would have been a pain to take care of. Collecting game second-hand would have been annoying because you'd have to track down ones that were taken care of.

I recently discovered the Hori Digital Controller was released in North America in limited quantities with unique English-language packaging. I bet that one is worth more lol.

Agreed. Collecting Nintendo games is a pain due to cardboard boxes. I am glad they move on with Gamecube.

I found a Pokemon XD Edition Gamecube with a wavebird for under 20 bucks at the local thrift store. Wavebired analog stick is pretty beat up so i'll have to switch it out (and buy the special scredriver?) I was hoping the pokemon edition gamecube would be worth something, but after all it's just a sticker on the top. Price was worth it just for the wavebird imo.

Ordered what appears to be a pretty decent condition GCN, and an s-video cable. Hopefully it's not a big step down from Wii w/ component, but we'll see.

Will be nice to be able to use my GB Player again too.

Would you folks say it is worth getting a Gamecube even if I don't plan on shelling out for the component cables? I have a Wii, but I guess having access to the gameboy player would be nice? Even though I have enough trade in credit at a local store to get one with spending real money I have a hard time justifying it.

This is now officially the best thread on GAF.

Although the distinct lack of one of the best games on the platform from most collection sis somewhat disturbing.

Metal Arms: A Glitch in the System was the definitive version. THE 3rd person Halo.

Go out now and get it.

Hi,

Although I never owned this model I'm posting a picture of the awesome Panasonic Q.

PanasonicQ.jpg

The Q actually played retail movie DVD's and audio CD's as well as Nintendo Gamecube games.

Myself personally, I have a launch Japanese Gamecube (purple) and a launch US Gamecube (black).

I'm actually heading to Tokyo in a few days and I've always wanted one of these. Would anyone know where my best bet finding one would be? Such an awesome unit.

Definitive version was on Xbox, wasn't it?

Christ, I can't wait for the day when people stop pretending Metal Arms was any good. We get it. Nobody bought the game, and it's not terrible.

Low standard.

June 1st is the last day Gamestop is taking in PS2 trades I think. At least thats what my local store has posted.

Anyone I would, but my store only had...NHL something and Rogue Squadron 3 (snagged that for myself).
