The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

IIRC it's only Silver and Grey.

I've never seen any other color(s)

There were some limited edition ones.

I need Rogue Leader. Hard to find.

I sold mine when I got Rebel Strike. Idiot.

I do think I have an extra copy... I've been meaning to post it in the B/S/T thread once I stopped being lazy and took a picture of it. I can PM you if you are interested.

Seems like it :D

Sawyer's great, thanks for asking!

Can't even tell he had surgery!

Oh wow! It reminds me when he just had his surgery and you posted about it, totally forgot about that. I felt so bad, that must've been quite a stressful experience for you. :/

I'm glad he's okay man, it's heartwarming to see the little guy looking all hype and healthy now. :D

I really have a soft spot for colourful transparent consoles. :p Here is my transparent orange Gamecube and transparent blue Wii. <3 Don't mind the fish stickers on the gamecube... Of course I also installed modchip on that GC to be able to play games region free. :)

^
Oh man, that Gamecube looks SUPER nice, very reminiscent of the Orange N64 I used to have.

Was that a custom shell you bought online I assume?

Yes, I bought it about 6 years ago for 4£ when some online retailer specialiced to console mods was getting rid of all gamecube stuff. I really regret that I only bought one shell. I should have gotten all the colours. Now you can't find those shells anywhere. :( The brand is IcedCube IIRC.

I know that these custom shells don't propably have any collection value but I just love them. Such a shame that they don't release any transparent consoles nowdays...

Absolutely! Most regular old GameCubes would have little collection value anyway, unless it's a Spice or Mint or Q or something pretty rare. I'd take a transparent brightly coloured Cube over another run-of-the-mill coloured one anyday!

Is there any place I can buy these cases that support full sized DVDs?

I have no idea anymore. :/ I think these have been out of production for years. You might have luck with some online auction sites or something.

I used to have a transparent blue gamecube too but I sold it years ago. I really regret it... It was beutiful. ;_;

Skies & RE 0 showed up tonight! no time to play either before work, sadly

rest are on their way - was debating Sonic Gems for the Game Gear ones i missed, how was Sonic Heroes? it looks like Advance 1.5

Well guys, I just bought this which will arrive in a few days.

So maybe perhaps the Intec Gamecube Monitor can be run in 480p after all, of course this is just wishful thinking.

Playing Pikmin 1 for the first time. Is Olimar supposed to be really small, or everything on this planet is just huge? Guess oxygen is poisonous to him?

Also noticing some geoglyphs and crop circles...why didnt I buy this game at GC launch?

Because of this thread, I ordered Two Gray WaveBird Controllers. I plan on painting one red.

I love the GameCube, I really really hope Nintendo will add some games to the VC.

I also plan on ordering a complete Melee since my friend has mine, and I don't have the manual. Lol

Might be otherwise but didn't they actually add a few new folders or bits of information you could find in the game? Fairly sure I read that once long ago.

You're thinking of the N64 version and the EX Files.

---

Here's my collection:

Not pictured:
- GBA Player, Freeloader
- Silver, Black, Purple controller
- Silver Cube

The Zelda Collection Disc came with the Mario Kart GCN Bundle, which is why it is inside the Mario Kart Double Dash!! case. Damn, I wish I had one of those cool cases for it :(

I still plan on upgrading the PAL games to NTSC whenever I swim in too much (or just barely enough^^) cash. But they're so expensive :/

Games I still plan on getting:
- Luigi's Mansion
- Cubivore
- Doshin the Giant
- Baten Kaitos Origins
- Skies of Arcadia Legends
- Fire Emblem: Pool of Radiance
- The Simpsons: Hit & Run
- Starfox Assault
- Kirby Air Ride

Games I used to own:
- Burnout 2: Point of Impact
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
- Resident Evil 4 (German version lacking Ada's Assignment) and RE4 (uncut Austria import)

I'm also just playing it for the first time. Is it not supposed to be Earth, he's just tiny?

Well, you can find Earth products in the environment, so ... maybe? It has to be a post-apocalyptic Earth since only that would explain all those weird creatures, nature taking back the planet and random human architecture being in the weirdest places (bathroom tiles) and all these things like batteries, cardboard boxes etc still lying around (although the latter would clearly have decayed by the time this would have to take place, unless you assume it's a new super-improved cardboard that doesn't ever decay^^).

cross-posting in hopes of a good samaritian!

dammit

got my copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends today, but the guy didn't package it well - it was somehow loose in the case, dinged up the sides of the game & i cannot get it working. tried everything i could to clean it, just won't load. so bummed.

if any of ya'll wouldn't mind checking to see if a gamestop nearby you has it for $20, i'd appreciate it & totally get you back for shipping & your troubles! can't seem to find any copies for sub $40 outside of a lucky auction here & there right now, man this sucks.

It's no help, but holy crap, GameStop still takes/sells GC games in the US? Damn!

Australia's EBGames cleared out GameCube at least 3 years ago :(

Gamestop ended GC trade-ins last year, but I guess they're still selling through whatever stock they have for now.

According to their site none of the local Gamestops ever have any GC games.

having picked up a few games this past week you just have to go in and ask if they haven't anything(so far about half the time nothing) but you can find a few things. Website seems to be useless for this, just call and ask if they have anything left, most of it will be caseless.

It is is there, it wont be 20. All GC games take off 75% at the register so that would be a steal :P

That being said, i'll see what I can do.

EDIT: Is it better to just set HDTVs to 4:3? I know some of the games have widescreen options, but like the PS2, it just seems easier to keep the TV in 4:3 for those inputs. Or would something like "Set by Program" work better, so if I wanted, I could set to widescreen using ingame options?

Here's my modest collection (again, crappy camera picture warning):

Not pictured: Action Replay (I think it was the one which let you input codes, so I guess it'd be great if I ever got my hands on F-Zero GX) and a Metroid Prime 2: Echoes bonus disk (which has a short demo of the game where you could still scan-strafe for some reason).

The only games I didn't purchase myself were that motocross game (a gift from my cousin) and Monopoly (a gift from one of dad's friends), and only Monopoly, Kirby Air Ride and Mario Power Tennis are used games, mostly because I once bought a pre-owned Pikmin 2, and the gat froze at the unskippable "You paid off your initial debt!" cutscene, so I returned it for a refund and simply bought a new copy; ever since that incident, I tried to avoid buying used discs as much as possible. I got Zelda Collector's Edition directly from Nintendo for registering my previous games.

I'll be doing some mini-reviews later just like I did in the N64 thread, since I guess someone could find them useful.

Do you have any DVD/CD disc polishing service nearby? Those usually get rid of all the scratches and then game works again like new. :) Of course polishing wont help if the data layer is damaged. Then it's permanent.

not that i know of, don't think gamestop does this? again though it's kind've on the rim itself, i don't know that anything can make the GC read it like this.

Does anyone have a list of must have GameCube games? Trying to buff up my RPG collection on the console, during the original timeframe I was spending all my money on ps2 RPGs.

There aren't tons of RPGs for the Cube.

Quick thoughs:

Tales of Symphonia
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
PSO I&II(Plus)
Baten Kaitos
Baten Kaitos Origins
Mega Man X Command Mission
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Lost Kingdom
Lost Kingdom 2
Gauntlet Dark Legacy
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance
Evolution Worlds
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door

And...I think that's all. Please give more titles to this man if I'm forgetting some.

While i'd not usually suggest it, do you have a place around you that does professional disc buffing? I had a mauled cube disc and after getting one done it looks new, some resurfacing looks ugly and such, but it might be worth a shot.

again though, where do you guys usually go to do this? is it a service gamestop offers? at this point i'm down to try it, if ya'll think it'd help a scratch on the rim itself (again pretty sure this came from it being loose in the case & banging around during shipping)

I go to a local retro shop to get my resurfacing done. Never had a bad experience, but I'd suggest you get it done by someone who knows what they're doing.

Picked up a component cable for my launch GC today from a local mom and pop store for $39! Usually going for $200 online...

So happy - transferred my Wii memory to my Wii U - disconnected my Wii and hooked up my GC with GB player via component. Just played Metroid Zero mission on my 50' Samsung and it looks great...

Glorious day today!

eh...yeah that'd take some hunting down out here sadly, prolly just gonna return it & try to catch the next auction, which sucks

That's a killer deal, I got mine for 110$ from an Ebay seller that was selling it for more, but I talked him out and he dropped the price a bit. D:

Yo GC-Component GAF, how much did you pay for your cable?

I would do this if I were you, after all it's not your fault if it's not working, sure it sucks but you'll be better with a non-buffed copy imo. (That, if the next one you'll get isn't buffed of course. :P)

caught one at the beginning of the year for $85 or so shipped? so glad i did, birthday gift from my girl, i still don't think she knows what it does haha

Just an FYI - the local mom and pop (southern Cali) called M&M games in Murrieta, CA that I got my component cable from has two gamecubes (1 silver and 1 purple) - both with the digital out - for $29.

Saw them today still in stock.

In the same multiplayer-focused-topdown-action-RPG vein of Gauntlet: Dark Legacy and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, there are also Hunter: The Reckoning, X-Men Legends, and X-Men Legends 2. The other games in this genre, of which there were quite a few that generation, were all PS2 and/or Xbox only, but the GC did get those three, along with the two you listed.

You also forgot the single-player turn-based RPG Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. Also Pokemon Colliseum and Pokemon XD have single-player modes, so they qualify for the list. There is also the action-RPG Summoner: A Goddess Reborn, which is a (pretty good) port of Summoner 2 from the PC/PS2. Finally, there's the no-good-by-all-accounts Virtua Quest.

Of course, there are also a couple of Japan-exclusive ones.

Finally, Fire Emblem's a turn-based strategy game, not an RPG. It's in the same genre as Gladius, Future Tactics, and, I guess, Worms 3D. And that's pretty much it; those were the only turn-based strategy games on the Gamecube, in English at least. Yeah, thin list... but at least they're all at least okay games, and Fire Emblem PoR of course is fantastic.

Other than that, Phantasy Star Online III: C.A.R.D. Revolution could potentially be on the list (of strategy games, that is). I'm not sure though... it's sort of a weird hybrid of card-battle strategy game but with RPG elements... definitely worth playing though! Good game.

As for RTSes, of course the GC has the Pikmin games, Goblin Commander, Army Men RTS, the GC Yugioh game (apparently), and some Japanese-only stuff. Unless you also count Harvest Moon in this genre. Oh, and Amazing Island is some kind of sim/minigame collection hybrid thing.

aw dont do this man, i finally just got I & II vanilla for a decent price, heh

Eh, the Plus version is pretty much the same thing, just with four added quests (that's not all that much), a new challenge mode for episode II, and some previously online-only minigames put on the disc. It's a minor upgrade, though nice if you have it (I do, but that's because I found it cheap...).

eh...yeah that'd take some hunting down out here sadly, prolly just gonna return it & try to catch the next auction, which sucks
You don't have even one single local gamestore or music store or something which has professional buffing service? That'd be awful, I've used places like that quite a few times to try to save discs. Sometimes it works.

Yo GC-Component GAF, how much did you pay for your cable?

I got mine for ~$12 in Japan back when I was living over there. :)

I'm surprised they actually sold them over there as D-Terminal (Ｄ端子) seemed to be much more prevalent in JP TVs at the time.

Yo GC-Component GAF, how much did you pay for your cable?

$46 directly from NAL :D
Arrived at my parents' place today, so I should get it here pretty soon.

That's basically what I've done too. I was keeping the Wii around as an emulation machine, but have decided to just unplug it and replace it with the Cube. What I don't have on Virtual Console I can deal without.
I think I will christen my component cables with Metroid Fusion :3
