The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

I have literally at this point in the Switch's life played more Switch than WiiU and Wii combined and I got a Wii on launch night. Such a great, fun system.

do you play smash bros?

I love my Switch. And I love the fact that some people love to hate the Switch. If it's getting under people's skin Nintendo is doing something right.

a lot of people are mistaking hate though...

Anyways, this is going to be my most anticipated console in a while. I'm glad that there's going to be a strong line up exclusives ready for me. I already have the accessories I want planned out. So glad Nintendo made it easy with USB-C and didn't go with some proprietary bullshit.

I don't know about love, but it's staggering to see the how many people know about the Switch in my area.

With the Wii U nobody was interested. Nobody. But the Switch... my co-workers know I have one and every now and then they ask about it and if I'm happy about it. I honestly answer that like with every system launch the first year is rough around the edges, but if they like what they see they can always wait it out untill its back in stock. Most of them really like the whole hybrid aspect and really seem impressed by Mario Kart 8. Two of my co-workers are massive Skyrim fans and they even consider to get the system because they like the idea of Skyrim on the go.

But overall, whats more important is it seems Nintendo is really back in the eye of the public. Thats the real victory here.

Why does every third party game thread turns into Switch portbegging?

Those damn Nintendo fans! *shakes fists*

I realize that WiiU being a total dud shielded those who owned it from console war somehow... I can't imagine how the First years of Wii were here...

Those warriors from both sides should realize that these systems are quite complementary. None is really a danger for the other.

Jeez. I mean the Switch is a great system and all but it's safe to say you missed out on amazing Wii and Wii U games.

I don't see the same from Playstation or Xbox fans.

No, it's all there, you're just not registering it.

These posts concern me because it seems they crop up solely because it's apparently a problem when 'Nintendo fans' (the definition of which can apparently range from people with Nintendo avatars who only post about Nintendo, to people who lauded a Nintendo game once in a thread more than someone else agrees with) decide to gush like people who enjoy their PS4s have been doing since it released. I'm not playing the 'victim' angle. I'm playing the 'don't hold double standards so blatantly' angle. It's like, people who don't like The Witcher 3 - we all know how the arguments. When someone decides to make a shitpost that insinuates that people overhype the game, there's a bevy of reasons they pull from to try and justify that point.
In the weird, wacky universe where Witcher 3 is a Nintendo exclusive - how many of those posts would be appended with a remark about 'Nintendo fans', you think?

Have you not been following the trends over the last 5 or so years?
Nintendo isn't allowed to be successful, Nintendo is DOOMED!
Good news about Nintendo isn't real, Nintendo is DOOMED!

That said, the Switch is great. It's the first piece of Nintendo hardware that is legitimately great with great games, whereas the WiiU and 3DS were pretty terrible pieces of hardware with great games.

Nintendo has been doomed since before the Nintendo 64 was called the Nintendo 64. It's not even close to a "last five years" sort of thing.

After people slept on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch, I have a feeling Skyrim will be the next big slept on game. I've put over 800 hours into Skyrim on PC according to Steam (that can't be right, I bet that accounts for a lot of idle time) and I sure as hell will be getting it on Switch due specifically to the form factor. I really hope that sends a message to western developers that there is an actual, compelling reason to buy a visually downgraded version on the Switch now.

Like many people have said, it has been a long time since Nintendo's hardware has actually been a reason to buy the console, rather than a barrier to playing Nintendo's games.

Why does every third party game thread turns into Switch portbegging?

Whats wrong with gamers asking for games to be on their system?

Vita fans are doing that as well, and everyone's begging for Nintendo games like Monster Hunter and Bayonetta 2 too

I was repelled by the neon initially, but after I saw one in the wild I decided to order the neon joycons online. Took a while to find them, but now they're on their way. I needed extra joycons for MP games anyway, so my old gray ones will get a ton of use still.

I bought the gray ones with the multi-colored extra ones so I have both options. The Neon looks really nice since the gray is a bit more boring.

This is exactly what I love about the Switch, as well as the Wii U to a lesser extent. It just makes it easier on you and those around you to insert gaming time into your life. I sit on the couch with my wife watching TV while I play on the Switch, and then when we go up to bed I bring it to play a bit after she falls asleep. I think it'll be a huge gamechanger for married folks and parents especially.
As I said a few pages back, tonight was my first night with it. It really did make a huge difference. My wife watched her British Baking show on Netflix. I played Zelda.

Which 90 minutes in, I get it. I truly do. What a game. The fact I was playing it on "handheld" device. Holy shit. I just truly hope the games continue to come. But damn, after just 1 night, I am a believer.

Hate to hate: Ouya, because the concept for it was pretty cool.
Love to hate: Ngage, lol.
Hate to love: Dreamcast, it'd be way less painful if I didn't love it. Vita too to a lesser degree.

It's true, nobody talks about this. I'd never even heard of the series until I saw it on the Switch eShop.

What actually is it? Can it be played by multiple people in Tabletop mode?
It's a collection of games, all of them great (but Quiplash is the best). People use their phones as input devices; you go to jackbox.tv on your mobile browser, input the room code from the Switch, and off you go.

The Switch screen displays the instructions and prompts and quotes and questions or whatever, and everyone enters in what they want on their phone. The answers come up live on the Switch screen for everyone to see, and then everyone votes/guesses/whatever, depending on what the game is.

It's kind of hard to explain, but it's amazing.

I must be in the wrong crowd. I use my Switch every day but the couple of times I've tried to take it somewhere public people just look at me funny, and nobody ever really wants to actually use it.

And even when I've convinced people to try it, nobody seems to like the Joycons. I think I've inadvertently talked a friend out of buying one because of how much they didn't like the portable experience.
Yeah that's weird. I've sold 5 maybe more people on it just by them seeing me play Zelda or playing a quick match of fast rmx with them. Not that the game sold them, it's an ok game, but they liked that it just broke apart to do easy multiplayer.

I took out the Switch at work today and had my first experience with 2-player Tabletop Mode in MK8D. It was a hit. People were taking turns playing and having a blast. I had questions from others about what it was, the cost, and the games. It's a slick, fun device and people are definitely drawn to it. I really didn't expect the reaction I witnessed today.

Everytime I bust out sideways joycon mode, I have to turn into an apologist for the weird joystick placement and the terrible SR/SR (although now that I keep the straps in my bag, this isn't an issue anymore.). It's convinced me to pick up two pro controllers instead of a set of joycons (or two) and a charging grip (or two).

But this one annoyance aside, I will agree that everyone I've shown the Switch to is absolutely enamoured with it. And I love it so much that I'm going on the eShop nearly every day, hoping to find another reason to play more on it.

Speaking for myself...

Hate to hate: OG Xbox. Halo: CE was absolutely GLORIOUS, but overall its game library left a lot to be desired. Wasted potential, basically.
Love to hate: after the PSP (which I loved) the Vita was a huge disappointment. Animu up the wazoo.
Hate to love: Dreamcast. Its early death still hurts to this day. I wish I could let go, but I can't.

This is not a serious post is it? :p Only going from GAF it seems the frontpage is always full of Switch related threads, and lets not forget all these "I would love to play this on Switch" posts, I'd say the system is pretty popular.
Unless you're talking about your anecdotal experience IRL which would be something I couls relate to, no one I know is really interested in the system right now.

yes thats what i mean. GAF isnt representative. OK, anecdotal experience istn either, but i never said it was. Its just what I percieve in my surroundings. Noone is talking about it.
Switch situation reminds me awfully alot of the Wii. After inital hype it collects dust in most households.

Wii had a relatively high attach rate and several games exceeded 5, 10, 15, or even 20 million sales.

So it reminds you of a non-existent scenario you fabricated in your own fantasies? Many things can also remind me of "things I made up that suit my argument with no basis in reality".

It really isn't that hard to look up the Wii's software numbers, its publicly available information.

It has a 9:1 software attach ratio, 9! Are you of the thought that the core gamer was buying 40+ games for it to have been "collecting dust in most households" that make up the vast majority of the 100m population?

That's because the dock is made of special scraping metal with those guiding pieces. I put a thin piece of cloth over these guiding strips and I haven't had to worry about scratching since.

Gen 5 saw more than 150 million consoles sold.

Gen 6 saw more than 210 million consoles sold.

Gen 7 saw more than 230 million handhelds sold alongside 250+ million consoles.

If Gen 8 sees 160 million consoles sold, that's a pretty significant decline - and an end to previously uninterrupted growth.

There is no "normal" because there hasn't been a like-for-like generation in terms of sales to date. The best you'd get is probably Gen 3 to Gen 4. The closest thing to "normal" we've gotten is constant gen-over-gen growth, which we'll see in terms of dollars this gen but not in terms of consumers.

Gen 6 is anomaly because there were 4 major console makers and the PS2 took up 155 million of those total sales numbers. Gen 7 also could be pointed out the largest attention from casual audiences we have noticed. If all numbers remained the same it would show that the mobile industry has not taken consumers but it has. It seems as if Nintendo got it the worst because out of all the consoles we can compare from the Big 3 nothing has had a bigger drop than the Wii to the Wii U.

For Gen 8 to see those numbers one has to question what is being counted as apart of that gen. It is most likely the Xbox one and PS4 can attain those numbers through out their life on market. The rest would be counted by nintendo. Is Wii U considered 8 gen? Is the switch also? Nintendo carving their own path made it harder to gauge this stuff.

I love my Switch. And I love the fact that some people love to hate the Switch. If it's getting under people's skin Nintendo is doing something right.

Hate? I think it's just not what they hoped for.
For people who wanted a great Nintendo home console with great new Nintendo games, there is nothing right now.
For people who wanted an amazing handheld with WiiU ports (and new games later on), it's the best thing ever.

Personally, i can see the appeal. It's not what i wanted but i might get one when there are more new games.

These aren't games like prey that you play and beat and move on. These are games you will play for years and years and years.
Who made you lord of deciding a game's replayability? Prey looks to be full of it. I know I'm going to give that game a couple of playthroughs. Equally, I'm sure I'll put dozens of hours into my Switch. No need to put other titles down to fit your argument, though.

The bizarre myth that nobody was buying software for the Wii is curiously persistent. I think it's just an idea that would be very convenient for some people if it was true, so they can continue to write it off as a 'fad' a decade later despite it selling a shitload of games. Maybe all those games weren't 'real games' :D

Nothing right now, except for a great Nintendo home console with great new Nintendo games, lol. I mean, nobody forgets how poorly the Wii U performed at market, but everyone overstates people's familiarity with it and it's library.

The fact that Zelda and Mario Kart are on Wii U is of little consequence to most people.
Because to most people, the Wii U never existed. It's not a thing.

People didn't care that Breath of the Wild was available on a less expensive, more mature platform. It's -literally- a new Nintendo game regardless of your dismissal of it, one that itself sold a new platform despite being available on last gen hardware.
Most of the people who would play Mario Kart 8 haven't, because its original release landed on a failure of a platform. It's not a brand new game, but it might as well be to most of the people who will play it in the event that Switch sees sustained sucess.

It's great for the people who didn't get to play thee games yet. But for Nintendo fans who did (like me, and i really like my WiiU).. there isn't much new yet. No matter how defensive you get. But i agree it's great tech for a handheld. Something i personally just never wanted. It's not a great home console. It's great handheld.

No, there is a class of hater who objects to a different paradigm from 'large console box with western 3rd party support' being successful. They fear another different success will harm their preferred paradigm.

The Wii was 'ruining gaming' by existing, and sustained success of the Switch will likely elicit some cries like that as well.

I don't disagree with you on that point, even as a Wii U owner myself. That's just not the point you appeared to be making.

I don't think so. Whenever a really divergent technology or concept is introduced to gaming and catches steam, people start up with the "omg this better not replace my traditional gaming" spiel (and seriously there's countless examples of this nonsense). But I really don't see how the kind of people who perceived things like motion control, online multiplayer, VR, etc. as threats to the gaming industry they like, will feel threatened similarly by the Switch, in the event of its success.

I really want a Switch, even came close to getting one, but I decided to wait. I just have to many games I still want to play on my PS4 Pro. Currently deep into Persona 5. NiER, Gravity Rush 2 and Yakuza 0 are in my backlog.

And then Call of Duty WW2, Everybody’s Golf and Red Dead Redemption 2 are still coming out this year. Too many games. I’m afraid that once I experience Zelda on the Switch, it will be difficult to go back. For now, I’m aiming to get one early next year.

I never thought I'd play games with those joycons detached and 1 in each hand, but now I'm doing it all the time. It's godlike, and so super comfy.

If it takes a chunk of the Japanese developers and franchises...

If a single engine gets tooled for a lower spec base...

If local multiplayer takes off again and developers 'waste time on casual games instead of cinematic masterpieces'...

Go to a media create thread to see people complaining about potential PS4 games being 'wasted' on Switch etc.

As it stands right now there are more than enough games
assuming people aren't elitists and scoff at indie titles.

There are essentially two major selling points for the Switch at the moment and that's Mario Kart and Zelda. Other titles like Snipper Clips, Fast RMX, Blaster Master Zero or Kamiko are also great titles, great exclusives even (and you can own all four for only 55 Dollar/Euro...).

I don't think the system is in trouble yet, Splatoon and Arms will carry the Switch over to the holiday season, that strange Rabbids X Mario RPG is coming along with the Dynasty Warriors Fire Emblem too and then Mario Odyssey will push the popularity of the Switch to new heights. -Also there is Xenbolade X2 somwhere down the line, I don't expect it to really launch in 2017 but it might be even better suited as an early 2018 title.
