The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

noone gave a shit about the wii a year after release.

They did, up til 2008, and even then it only left the public mind by 2010. A fault of Nintendo for not capitalizing on it as Apple came in and taken their casual base from the Wii to the iPhones.

2010 was the Wii's death date, no one cared after that. Around 4 years after launch.

88 millions did.

Wii got great games after year one. I think during its lifetime it only had one bad year, software-wise.

101.63 million (as of March 31, 2016)

Wow, just wow.

What? He's right. As a Wii U owner myself, I haven't been overly impressed with the Switch or the games so far. Then again, the only games for WiiU that I really liked a lot were the two Zelda remakes. I didn't like MK8 on WiiU so I didn't get Deluxe for Switch. I'm really looking forward to Super Mario Odyssey though, and hoping it really is like 64/Sunshine.

in my experience the switch has become the system that people allready forgot about.
noone is talking about it...

Yeah. Whenever I go to the electro store I first have to climb over a wall of unsold Switch units. Just laying there. It's a pretty good workout.

you guys seriously disregarding all those fad gamers that bought the wii, played two rounds of bowling and some wii fit and then put the thing in drawer forever?

Even if those people existed to achieve an attach ratio of 9 they would have had to be counterbalanced by a lot of really avid software purchasers in which case it was inconsequential.

I'm picturing 50% of all Wii owners playing one round of Wii Bowling and stuffing it in a closet, and then 50 million people went out and bought 18 games for it.

Wii fake news thread now.

Didn't sell hardware.
Didn't sell software.

Some people really hate this thing so much that they want to revise the fact that it was a massive success.

it didn't really win the generation, because it didn't have the real games. Wii was just grandmas who bought no games and it was collecting dust and forgotten 11 seconds after launch.

Been gaming forever — Nintendo, Sony, PC — and Switch is the first time where the hardware itself is just really enjoyable to use. Like these games are already great, but they're even greater on the Switch, thanks to its cool Transformers functionality and industrial design, its lovely screen and immersive rumble. Also, it's super-convenient just popping it in the dock to charge, and popping it back out to play.

Wii was huge until around 2010. 2008 and 2009 it really hit it's stride, with lots of games that were appealing, not only to Nintendo gamers but general audiences as well. Mario Kart Wii, Smash Bros, Mario Bros Wii, Wii Sports Resort. These were big, big games that sold millions of copies worldwide. People didn't trash their Wii after a few rounds of bowling.

You're really reaching to try and fit this weird, revisionist narrative you've imagined.

the Switch doesn't have the games necessary for me to want it yet, but I've played one and I do love it as a system. Dare I say it's the first Nintendo system where I've loved the design itself. But maybe the Wii U and the fact I still have an original 3DS is affecting that opinion.

Who bought Mariokart Wii and NSMBWii? Ghosts?

Ah the old Nintendo revisionism. Any second now someone will pop up and say Nintendo should go third party and the (insert successful Nintendo product here) was an outlier on their inevitable exit from the console market.

Or write it off as "lightning in a bottle", the most over-used phrase when that console is discussed, making the assumption that it was a complete outlier of a goalpost that Nintendo could never come even remotely close to approaching ever again, with the Wii U cited as incontrovertible proof of that fact.

People have been trying to wave away the success of the Wii since 2007, I'm not surprised that people are still failing to do it convincingly 10 years later.

This is like a 9 year old reaction... unless if you are been /s
It even has the 2 best games of that console generation.

Looking at current PSN sale in EU I notice I'm struck by the same feeling with every game I consider for purchase: I wish it would be on Switch. I am so spoiled by the mobility and speed by which games and the system launch that buying games for PS4 feels stupid. If same game is available for PS4 and Switch, Switch is definitely my choice, no matter the drop in visuals. And I consider buying games exclusive to PS4 more than before as well - I would prefer to play them on Switch instead. With two small children in my family, Switch has allowed me to play games much more than in many years, which has been sublime.

So in summary: Switch is really something different, and PS4 feels somehow antiquated in comparison.

jesus christ, i hope youre kidding. otherwise you sound like a fool

My local Gamestop got three in so I picked mine up! Gonna wait until after my exams to buy games but I'm happy to have one before Splatoon and such.

I'm really curious what percentage of Wii consoles you (and other people who make this argument) think actually only played Wii Sports. The Wii had an attach rate over 9, which I believe is about as high as console attach rates get. Meaning, Wii owners bought as many games as most "core" console owners. That is hard, factual data.

How does that explain all these millions of Wii's which were only bought for Wii Sports and never touched again? The only explanation I can think of is that was only the case for an extremely small percentage of Wii's, like 1-2%.

Not entirely false, most gamers used it as a door stop by the end of the generation. It had probably 10 great games and HUGE droughts. I remember the Allies saying it was their doorstop near the end...

Is there a console that doesn't go unused towards the end of it's life? That's kinda why it's called the end of it's life...

Also it had way more than 10 great games, again I would cite the attach rate.

Wait so most because you heard one specific story?

Wii did die an early death due to lack of continued support. That is a different claim from it being a one year fad that noone bought games for.

I love it when people non-ironically agree with an obviously insanely over the top comedy post.

You could in fact make the argument that a portion of Wii owners were upsold to a 360 with a kinect in 2010, but that would need to assume that "casuals" are just another consumer group, not shitty idiots that nobody wants 'on their team' and that all 360 owners were 'real' gamers, not filthy casual scum that we all hate

He's not. Switch launched two months ago, how many "quality Nintendo games" do you expect to be released in that short span?
If you don't like MK8 then you're not into quality Nintendo games. I personally love the idea with WiiU ports being released to the Switch, since I didn't own one and would love to catch up on the missed games.

I meant here's the thing. The Wii was an appealing system when its competitors started at $400 and up and it was $250 and no-one had an HDTV. With cheap competition and no Wii HD in sight a lot of people might consider upgrading. Nintendo should have released something like the WiiU in 2010 but instead decided to ride the Wii till 2012 which basically doomed that system.

That's kinda BS. I just have a different opinion than you and maybe others about what constitutes a quality Nintendo games. MK8 changed most of what I enjoyed the series for and just made it tedious and boring.

For example, in MKWii you had to do many different things in order to unlock all the characters, thus giving you a reason to check out all the different modes and things in the game. Now in MK8, just win a cup and you unlock something. And MK8D makes it even worse by having all the characters unlocked already.

It is BS to claim that there are no quality Nintendo games for a 2 months old device, just because you don't like a certain game, which btw was very well praised by the majority.
I for myself felt kinda forced to play modes I didn't really enjoy to unlock things with MKWii.

For wii u owners who have no interest in double dipping its a perfectly reasonable perspective. Of course it's extremely obvious that this is a minority opinion and Nintendo's approach has been stupidly successful but that doesnt mean we arent entitled to it and we should just fall in line.

Wouldn't have mattered; third parties had decided the wii audience were 'casuals' and unable to discern basic things like production values and would still have dumped their crapware there then complained that it didn't sell.

It's not like certain developers did not try on the Wii. People just predominantly bought the Nintendo offerings and/or games like Dance Party. Publishers just gave them what they wanted.

The original claim was that there was no Nintendo console with "great Nintendo games" which is a very objective statement about a very subjective thing, so it didn't really make much sense from a broad perspective. But yeah, if you're happy with the Wii U versions of those games I can totally understand not being interested in getting them for the Switch.

You are missing out on Snipperclips though...

This isn't actually true. At least one Call of Duty entry sold more on the Wii than the PS3, and I believe the on-par Maddens sold better than the dumbed down Maddens.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Public realized that a shit ton of people have use cases to play games both on their TV as well as off.

It ranges from just preference to play off TV elsewhere in the house to I'm leaving the house and would like to take my games with me.

It just fits in well with the modern life style for a huge chunk of the population.
