What is extra good is how they kept up that story line this week. They could have completely ignored the Pam/Jim thing which was interesting to instead focus on Andy and Erin or the terrible Oscar/Senator story line.

Pam is one of the few characters left on the show that resembles a human being.

Nellie is still in it, but in a diminutive sort of role. They are trying to make her much more likeable and personally I think it is working. I am sort of in the bag for this show so you can take this with a grain of salt but I do think this season is better than last season. But you will find that I have only NOT liked about 2 episodes of the show, ever. Scott's Tots, and China.
I like the new season.
Different strokes, I guess, because she's one that annoys me the most now. And I used to love her. The stupid, cartoonish faces she makes now when cracking corny jokes too loudly for her character... in fact, her whole new, forced extroverted personality just doesn't jive with me. I'm all for character evolution but this is like a whole new person at this point (though you could say this about a lot of characters on the show).
They could have saved it with much better writing indeed, but Steve Carell is also a lot more talented than Ed Helms and has the ability to turn shitty materials into semi-decent.
Am I suppose to care about the new Jim or something? Should I be rooting that he gets the girl? Kind of confused about the direction they are taking Andy... do they want us to hate him now or something?
And why do they make Nellie one of the most horrible character last season only to become a sympathetic lonely woman who wants to adopt babies?
ugrgh characters on this show are so inconsistent and I'd say majority of the characters no longer resemble what they were at one point or have not followed reasonable character progression. Only person I could argue for is Jim, but that's probably because his character development hit the pause button from when he got married to this season.

Yup, even during the weaker seasons/ episodes Steve Carell could act extremely well with even subpar material. He always seemed to pull off whatever was given to him. With him gone the bad writing is more glaring.
It seemed with the andy stuff that they realized how much we've grown to hate him and are playing into that, so we won't feel bad for him at all when Erin goes for Pete. and then I guess the show will end with him learning he needs to move on? Who knows. Anyway it had direction. wasn't good, wasn't bad.
Oscar stuff was boring.
But the Dwight call plot...was hysterical. I am astounded at how much I laughed during that. I can't remember actually liking a joke like that for seasons or so. Whoa. It was such a throwaway thing so I don't see it as a good sign for the show or anything, but at least it happened.

What annoys me is that they've already established him as a certain character (completely different than he was in season 3, but still), and someone who loves Erin and would never be mean to her. So even though I didn't think the two actors had chemistry or that it made much sense, I don't like that they're having him going out of character and being mean and cold to her. It's frustrating. And it's not like anybody is rooting for Erin and Pete. He's not an established character, even in this season.
It was okay, but I didn't like when they would have Pam do an accent because it was so painfully obvious that it was her. I kind of cringed when you could hear her over the phone saying "please hold for [so and so]" or something and it was just like "ugh. that's so obviously Pam".

That was an amazing episode. The Dwight plot was fantastic through and through, and Kevin was hilarious. Andy stuff was shrug worthy at best.

I can't figure out what they're tying to do with the Oscar/Angela thing. Is that literally the only way to make us root for Angela?

Oscar is my favorite character this season.
I still question why they're rewriting the same fucking story with Erin and the intern as jim and pam.. is it supposed to be a tongue in cheek "ha ha look what we're doing, derp derp" type thing, or are they seriously trying to just re-do the Jim and Pam thing again? He even looks at the camera the same way..

Pedo Toby was the best. I think they're setting up Jim and Pam leaving Scranton. Erin and Andy well probably have a forced bullshit happy ending. Michael Scott returns with his wife and kids. Dunder Mifflin goes down for good and everyone retires. The End.

Option 2. Jim and Pam move away and become super rich and successful.
I'm still not rooting for Angela really.
How can you? She's obnoxious about the whole situation with the Senator from the moment she meets him, they never redeemed her from the Andy/Dwight thing. I mean, it doesn't justify what Oscar is doing, but it's not making me root for her in any way.

The Jim story was forgetful. Either I missed an episode, I missed some sort of beginning somehow, or I'm misinterpreting "this isn't working out" from the last episode. No big deal, though.

Final scene with Angela and Dwight asking Toby about gay people genuinely made me laugh. Especially the last question.

First half of Season 4 is really good. Fun Run and Dinner Party are two of the best episodes of the entire series.

Definitely. I loved the first half of season 4. (although I personally wasn't huge into Dinner Party since it was really awkward)
I've just given up on expecting there to be a decent episode from here on out. My fiancee and I were watching this tonight and were just blown away by how terrible this show has gotten.

Season five has a few really good episodes too.
Watching the last few seasons has been similar to sitting in a room, with a long lost friend.Looking but not really wanting to look.Gazing into the casket,wondering where all the time went.The good time.Leaving before the service is completely over seems so unfair to them and to you.But, as a cold,lifeless, soulless shell, this isnt how you want to remember your friend.So you just sit there, waiting, hoping it ends sooner rather than later so you can get back to remembering the good times.
