Can someone explain why the Renault exhaust is so interesting? What's the advantage of sticking it at the front?

What Renault have done in to lead the exhausts forward through the sidepods (about 1 meter) in-between the chassis and the radiators, then turn the exhaust 90-degrees to point it down towards the leading edge of the floor. The exhausts gasses follow the curved leading edge and round underneath the floor. This accelerates the flow under the floor for more mass flow and hence more downforce.

Kimi is staying in rallying in 2011.

Looks a straight shoot-out between Heidfeld and Senna for the seat then in Jerez this week.

Massa fastest in Jerez, but it seems like glory run, other teams did not even bother to 'compete' for fastest time.

But damn, Mclaren looks fantastic on track

So they think no one can use the F150 name for anything else now? Interesting. And who is going to confuse the two?

They can't use the name in the car industry that's for sure. But if someone wanted to name their toaster F150 it would not be an issue.

And Ferrari certainly has a presence in the US through official dealerships. And Ford does in Europe. So they are competing directly in the automotive industry in the same territory which means the name would lead to potential confusion.

That said, the Red Bull and McLaren look fantastic. Red Bull's back end makes it seem as if they decided to get rid of the engine and transmission for aerodynamics' sake. Ferrari seems more conservative to me but you never know. I am also waiting for the paint blast tests, those are fun.

last season every midfield/topteam sanbagged aside from Sauber. And i think it's safe to assume this year Sauber won't show all their cards in testing either.

He was only fastest because he was afraid if he spent more time on track, the car would explode :lol

It's not covered in green paint particles and nobody at McLaren has yet to comment something like: "there is an issue with the car that nobody can figure out".

Hamilton really made KERS shine a couple of seasons ago, and now with an additional wing to play with, I'm sure we'll see even more overtakes from him this season.

Aggressive? Yes. Attractive? No.

I just want it to be highly competitive. Anything more is icing on the cake.

God damn that back end is incredible.

I just love how the back end thins out and disappears. Those sidepods are probably the shortest in the field. They are probably packaging everything higher so that they can cut it shorter and have more play in the back.

Look at their cooling routing from the latest testing. It's nonexistent below with an even more massive blow hole up top.

Also, look at the exhaust routing here. You can see the road! Newey probably found another loophole, cause that looks like another fully blown diffuser.

Yeah, no kidding. It's almost looks ridiculous at how big it i, compared to the other teams. But if it works to make it able to tighten up the whole back end then that's great.

Such an urge to fight back, love it.

Kubica's manager Morelli has also revealed that he was told to prepare for the worst when his driver arrived in hospital because of the severe blood loss he had suffered.

"When he arrived here he had only one litre of blood," Morelli said. "'Call the boy's parents,' the doctors told me on Sunday afternoon. I felt a chill in my spine.
"

Only one liter of blood, no idea how he survived it.

Lots of action from the rookie's today.

In the last hour, Perez in the Sauber and Maldonado in the Williams have stuffed their cars into the tyre walls.
The Williams looks like it was a bigger crash.

While that's certainly possible (Zanardi was in a similar situation after losing his legs) I think Morelli was given bogus information or this is just an errant assumption on his part.

Stopping blood loss to a limb is easy enough that I doubt Robert was this critical.

Awesome! Schumacher has the best lap-time with less than an hour to go of the 2nd day at Jerez. Just the kind of news I was hoping for.

That doesn't tell the whole story:

The run on which Schumacher did the best lap was not a drastically low fuel run - at least not less than 10 laps.

But it still was not a complete turnaround for Mercedes because, despite the fastest time, it took a lot of laps for his times to stabilise - and when they did they were around a second slower than where Red Bull was on similar runs.

Meanwhile, Rosberg says he's relying on the Bahrain update already.

I have adored the back end of the new Williams ever since I first saw it. It seems impossibly compact and worryingly fragile all at the same time.

It just looks unfinished. You know, like they ran out of money to pay the designers and engineers? "Hey you, stop there. It's enough, it's enough."

Kubica:
The fingers work and so does the arm, I can feel them. But I still have to undergo another operation and then I will know. I cannot move much right now. But I don't have much pain because I'm sedated. On Saturday I will be able to know what my condition is after I undergo the double surgery.

Then there will be the countdown to begin preparation. I only have that in mind. I want to return stronger than before.
http://crash.net/f1/news/166561/1/kubica_i_want_to_return_this_year.html

Seriously, all the best to him. If he can come back this year, it will be epic. In the very least, he has the mental resolve to get him back.

The Red Bull looks like the top car again this year at the moment.

The times they are putting in a fast and consistent in 10 laps runs. No massive drop-offs and not much off the glory laps from Schumacher, Alonso.

Interesting testing approach by Mclaren. It looks like data collection process.
I think they said at launch that the first 2 tests would be car systems checks, evaluation & etup and the last test in Bahrain would be the ultimate pace test.

Pretty standard for any team.

I reckon if Nick is just getting out of bed and putting in 1:21's with the other top drivers there, he's pretty much a sure thing for the seat now.

Depends on the testing program. Its good that he seems to be pretty quick in adapting to the car, but he might not have used KERS or anything yet, which could make things much more difficult if the car still isn't suited to it yet.

I think Nick will get the seat primarily because he's likely gonna give better feedback and will be more consistently reliable during a race weekend. His speed is pretty much known at this point.

Awesome set of pictures. I love the variety in f1 cars.

BTW I would imagine that the bar on the Renault wheels was some kind of sensor. Possibly a temperature sensor that could provide real time data across the width of the tire.
