I'm really enjoying G-Reco, and here's why:
1. The show carries the bad things associated with Tomino's reign, but it also carries the good. Specifically, Tomino, for all that he struggles to really write compelling female characters or believable dialogue during combat, is actually incredibly adept at picking up on the nuances of situations that, although mundane, are especially useful in establishing a sense of reality in things. For all that Tomino's psychic rainbow meteor dispersal is unbelievable, the man has managed to lend a certain amount of realism to a genre that began with giant metal super heroes. The kind of stuff I'm talking about is just things like people scratching their ears or needing toilets or, in the last episode of G-Reco I watched, struggling with zippers. All of it is inconsequential, but it's the kind of stuff I don't think that other anime directors often think about, and it really makes scenes feel natural at times when they otherwise mightn't.
2. Despite this, Tomino remains a distinctly weird guy, and it continues to show in the show. It's a unique flavor of weird that's specifically his, and it's an acquired taste, but after sitting through MSG through Turn A Gundam I've kind of grown fond of it. His sense of humor has at times grated people's nerves (see ZZ Gundam), but I think Tomino's actually on top of his game with that weird sense of humor of his this time around.
3. It reminds me a lot of Turn A Gundam. For me, at least, Mobile Suit Gundam and Turn A Gundam are the man's true best works, and as this show skews in the direction of Turn A I find myself enjoying it more and more. It's true that elements of earlier UC shows are present there (like the frequent introduction of new mobile suits), but there's this, how do I put it, more earthy feeling going on in the show than the likes of Zeta or ZZ.
4. It's absolutely beautiful. I'm totally in love with the Yoshida looks going on, and there's this kind of attention to movement that seems based around dancing. People and mecha sort of twirl and such. It might well be the most attractive UC show to me.
