Wow, HLJ finally got all their January restock items in. Should have HG ZZ Gundam, HG Zaku 1, MG Master Gundam, and MG Shining Gundam in a couple weeks. Their Private Warehouse option is so good, pay for the items and they can sit there for up to $60 days. Without it they would have come in 3 different shipments and cost way more in shipping. This way I can just bundle them together.
So a question for the painters here: I'm going to hand paint the super mode parts of the Shining, what all would I need for that? From what I've read it's basically just paint, white primer, and thinner. Anything else?
Also considering spraying it though the results may not be as good.

If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend this model from Harbor Freight. It's an amazing starter model. If you have store near you, you can easily get another $25 off of the base $90 with their regular coupons. It also allows you to upgrade piecemeal. The compressor is actually quite good. I added a pressure regulator for like $15 when I wanted to adjust spray pressure and when I wanted a nicer brush I bought that. The stuff it comes with will last you a while as you learn.
Just a suggestion for anyone even thinking about getting into airbrushing. It's awesome. You should totally do it.

how are you going to paint it? hand brush? I would recommend getting some tamiya rattle cans, will be a lot easier, quicker, and the results will be more consistent if you follow proper rattlecan technique.
Does rattle can refer to any specific type of spray or is it just what people call them? Is this what I'm looking for?

Man, this year there was quite a bit of Gunpla available at the Salt Lake ComicCon. The prices were WAY over MSRP, though. >.>
Almost bought a "Deactive" HG Unicorn Destroy Mode, but I'll just wait for the Full Armor.

Rattle can is just a term used for spray paint cans. If the parts are separate just prime them then paint them. I suggest letting the primer cure for at least 24 hours before painting and the same for the paint before a clear coat.
I also suggest making paint sticks so you can paint the pieces off the frames.
I've never had any luck on that. They keep pointing out the compressor exclusion in the fine print.
Didn't have that trouble with my store. Perhaps it's a bit YMMV or maybe some of their coupons don't have the compressor exclusion? Whether you get it or not, it's a still a good deal for a starter kit.
Okay cool, thanks for the suggestions! So I'm going to be painting yellow pieces gold, would white primer be right for that job?

I usually just use grey primer. It is more neutral and easier to build up from for me. Doing metallics it is best to have a gloss black finish before the metal. White under the metallic can give it a washed out look Where the black will provide a richer color.
Here is a good example of what the difference between white and gloss black can do.
I know some particular plastics, like the ABS many MG frames are made of, react poorly to the solvent in lacquer sprays like Tamiya. Can definitely hurt some things, particularly if applied thickly. I'd recommend priming with at least a cheap hardware spray primer like Krylon just to be safe.

Without primer there will also be a weaker bond between the plastic and paint and more likely to chip as well.
Oh wow, it does look much better with the black gloss. Any brand you'd recommend?
Last question is, will one can of paint and primer probably be enough? It's not much to paint, just the super mode pieces on the Shining if you're familiar. Looks like the paint cans at least are somewhat small.

The tamiya primer is lacquer right? I been using them in all the models without problem.
If abs is a problem, at least don't prime the white parts. My first kit rx-98-2, primed light gray using tamiya fine primer. I used 3 cans of tamiya white spray cans and couldn't even finish all the white parts. I think that was what drove me to invest in an airbrush.

Trying to watch through the entirety of UC from beginning to end finally, and I've just started the Zeta movies. Having seen the original Zeta series years ago and trying to watch this while considering the perspective of someone who hasn't seen the series and... ugh. It's frustrating. The 0079 movie trilogy is at least actually followable. This is just a rushed mess. The pacing is absurd, trying to smush a bunch of notable action scenes together into a 1.5 hour film, with no room for any kind of actual development. I'd hoped for something I could recommend to friends, but this is awful. They couldn't have at least gone for 2+ hour films like the 0079 trilogy? At least then it could have been better-paced. This whole thing feels like a counterproductive attempt to make a (brilliant) older series accessible for a more recent audience. What a disappointment.

I actually don't recall him getting smacked once in the blur of the first film. Hardly gets any character development at all except "kid who pilots the Gundam because he stole it or some shit." I suppose that might be a good thing to some.

God damn that's a lot of editing. Seeing Emma slap the shit out of Kamille and his epic Wong beat down are hilarious. How dare they edit those out! Him transforming from slapable nut job to a person that's doesn't spew stupid when he opens his mouth is part of his character development. Kamille grew a lot in the show.

For just the super mode parts one can should be plenty. As far as brands Tamiya is good. If you are asking about primer I usually just buy that from The Home Depot. Rustoleum or Krylon.

That's my favorite fucking episode. The first half of Banagher is rectified by the last half of that episode. It takes me 45 minutes to watch the last half.

This is hilarious since this is a recurring theme with most gundam storylines, but if you knew of the situations of the other characters and their reasons, you would probably hesitate like the protagonist. But if you throw in an ordinary person who only saw and experienced things from his side only, away from the main character, you would probably act like him too. Though not as dramatically.
