I think thats what I enjoyed, it was bonkers. Tomino always was bad with his writing but they kept lot of it underwraps. Here he just goes all out and creates something crazy. It's not really much different from other Gundam outside of it's violence and amount of sheer crazy which we started seeing with Tomino as he kept pushing Newtype powers. Everything was taken to extremes... story is typical Gundam though.
It had good animation and mecha action for it's time, but the mecha designs obviously did not win anyone over. I liked some of the mecha though and enjoyed all the action in the series. But thats why I watch most Gundam as it's just mecha porn for me, most of it is pretty bad outside of the OVAs

This is an interesting development. Aside from the first blu-ray box coming out for Gundam SEED, BS11 will begin broadcasting the HD version from Jan 1 2012. They are currently also broadcasting the HD Escaflowne TV series to promote the Feb 2012 release of that blu-ray box set.
What's interesting is the actual comment from BS11 about the nature of Gundam SEED HD. They mention that the entire series has been re-composited in both HD and widescreen, and re-edited as well. This means it is no simple upscale (SEED was a digital anime made in 4:3 SD after all). The twitter post also mentions that some existing scenes will have redone animation, and that a part of the music is being remixed as well.
It's going to be really interesting to see the result of this, because such re-composites could end up either really well done or really bad. More importantly, it will mean that the DVD releases remain the definitive original version of the series, since the HD versions will be altered and revised in various ways.
Edit: OH SHIT. I just realized that this would mean we're looking at another LUCASVISION release.

In the SEED Special Editions they already edited Flaga's helmet out of the final scene. They're probably going to do that for the TV series this time, just to ensure the retcon remains intact!
