The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

I try to organize based on how quickly i would need an app and the type of apps. So games are in 2nd window and calculator, im, notes, camera are in first. I wish they had folders, i'll give windows mobile at least that much credit, they know how organize their shit!

I've only downloaded a few free games so far: Aurora Feint, Tap Tap Revenge, and Cube Runner. Aurora Feint is probably my favorite of the bunch, simply because of its Puzzle League-style gameplay. The ability to tilt the way the blocks fall is a nice touch, but so far, it doesn't seem to add all that much to the gameplay. Maybe that changes as I level up. Tap Tap Revenge is also fun, but I wish there was more than only a few songs. Hopefully the downloadable track packs get added soon (they're already listed in the menu). As for Cube Runner, it's a fun little game where you dodge blocks by tilting the iPhone (or iPod in my case) and try to get as far as possible.

Oh, and for anyone that's interested, it looks like THQ added a version of de Blob to the App Store today. I have no idea if it's worth the $9.99 price tag, but I just thought I'd pass it on. Here's a link.

Oh, and does anyone have any recommendation on which Sudoku is the best? I'd like one to use, but there's like a million of them to choose from!

I am probably not the best to reply to this (as I am not a fan of the game), but according to a friend none of the Sudoku's available are that impressives. They all have their own seprate problems and no one has got it spot on yet according to him.

However, he did say Satori Sudoku was the best though, as it was straight to the point without silly fluff added on. It's only $1.99 as well.

Serious question time.

Barring any major announcements at E3, would it be a safe thing to sell my PSP for a Touch? Is the web browsing good?

I love the web browsing but theres no flash support and it crashes every so often.

Why is my iPod backing up everything everytime I sync? It is turning a 1minute sync into something that lasts 10+ minutes :(

This has being happening since I went to FW 2.0, but I am annoyed by it now

the iphone always used to back up with FW 1.0, but now it takes forever with all the apps being installed. It used to be a quick process.

You can safely click the X in the itunes status window (top center of window) to cancel the backup and the sync will continue afterward.

Still, I'd like an option to eliminate the automatic backup of the iphone each time it syncs. It takes forever.

Do not sync if you haven't added anything to photos, contacts, music, videos and so on. It will automatically back up each time if you sync without adding stuff or making any changes.

My theory is that its backing up save files... but the apps don't seem to have a default way of saving so it backs up the full app. It's pretty ridiculous.

Hmm, that's a good idea actually. I haven't used my PSP for the longest time and I finally got a good amount of time to try out the Touch today at an Apple store.

my gawd so amazing:lol

any chance of an osx-style dictionary app to come to the iphone? i need one, i use it all the time on my laptop.

The browsing is really great. One of the best things the iphone does. The media playback is also pretty fantastic. It's also a pretty nifty phone.

BUT, it is untested as a game platform. Sure, there are a couple decent games out now, but nothing approaching GoW: Chains of Olympus or Crisis Core.

If you play a lot of games on the PSP, don't toss it for an iPhone. If you use it mainly as a browser, media player, then you should consider swapping (or getting an ipod touch - and not signing a pricey monthly cell contract for 2 years)

Do you mean just a standalone dictionary or something that integrates into the other apps? I don't think it'll be possible to write an app that integrates into others due to SDK restrictions on devs. try some of the webapps. here's a pretty slick one:

I was shocked not to see one already. They have plenty of Bible apps, surprised no one thought of a dictionary.

It's shocking that no one has a dictionary app out yet. The only major thing holding it back is that each one weighs in at around 120MB.

I wouldn't really be interested unless it was J<->E, and I doubt that's in the cards.

oh, no with the dictionary i mean the the OFFICIAL osx dictionary app. is it just prohibitively large for the device? because that was one of my favorite additions to tiger.

I had a dictionary installed on my jailbroken phone a while ago... and IIRC it wasn't too big. You could download more dictionary sources as plugins for it, too.

Well, we know the iPhone OS already has a partial dictionary as it does spell checking and correction on pretty much any English word while typing. If Apple could set up a front end for that database as a standalone app, I guess it could be pretty good. They would have to add definitions, though. The Oxford dictionary that's part of OS X is over 110 MB. Maybe they don't want to make an app that large. :\

by the way, has anyone seen the hudson-soft game aqua forest? it looks pretty wild. like a physics simulator with different nature elements.

looks cool... until the framerate turns to complete shit once you get a couple things going at once. You can even see it slowing down in the demo reel.

I saw other videos of the gam with some string elements, water, fire and solid objects and it slows down to almost single digit framerates.

disappointing.

well, if they took out all those pretty diagrams and illustrations (which i really love) maybe they could get it smaller. i just figured that would be a key app apple would try to get on the phone. seems like a perfect fit for it.

As Sullichin said, the jailbreak dictionaries were much smaller. I assume that one is being worked on.

But, unless you don't have a data plan, using an online dictionary like I linked to previously would be a fine solution. And, since a standalone app from anyone aside from Apple couldn't insert words or affect other apps, you get the same functions from an online app.

edit: Hey mattie, weDict is online at the app store. it is basically the jailbreak dictionary app from before. 11 MB. enjoy.

i would have liked for the paypal and facebook apps to be something other than superficial 'friend feeds' or 'send money and check balance' apps.

are there web apps that let you write on people's wall in facebook, or check your payment history in paypal? guess the web is the best answer, huh?

bring this back to games...

has anyone tried SolarQuest? it's a side scrolling shooter. looks purty but I have no idea how smooth it plays

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284943997&mt=8

and Dizzy Bee is my next download after seeing some videos. looks great.

EDIT: I just played a bit of the desktop version of SolarQuest. It's not a shooter. it's an "avoid the barriers by moving up or down" game. your ship will always tend to go down unless you hit the space bar to push it back up. and you can't move forward or back. it's very different from what i thought it would be.

Dizzy Bee is awesome. Only $3 too and the amount of overall polish is amazing.

Some of these game prices put VC/WiiWare to shame. That's another story altogether though.

total noob question, but how do you even move icons around?

Just press and hold on one of the icons until they all start to jiggle. Then move around at will. If you move to the left and right sides of the screen it changes pages.

touch and hold an icon. now they start to wiggle and then grab one and move it around.

hold it to the edge of the screen to switch screens.

press home button when done.

thanks all. I was tearning my hair out trying to figure out how to do it. I was trying dragging, touching multiple icons at once... everything except holding one down.

Okie, so I am going to pick up a touch in about 30 mins .... 32gb on sale @ Circuit City.

Question for you touch owners -- would you jailbreak your touch or move to the 2.0 update?

Also -- do all iphone apps work on the touch?

I'm buying an iTouch within the next week I believe. I swear if they come out with a new model this year I will burn something down.

FiOSGuy said:

Apps that outright don't work are probably a rare exception. But obviously there will be apps that are more designed for iPhone's additional abilities (camera, better location services, more network coverage, etc.)

They'll work unless they require iPhone-specific functionality: Shazam (which listens to music playing near you and identifies it) obviously won't work because the Touch lacks a microphone. And so on.

Anyone try PhoneSaber? It's tiny but geeky fun.

The web browsing on Touch is seriously good, much better than on PSP, but you'll be in a world of disappointment if you're getting it for gaming, compared to PSP. Thay are fun novelty, but even the best Iphone games so far would hardly even register on PSP's if they were released on it, and if you have CF PSP with emulators and ability to play any PS1 game, it's that much more prominent.

If you move just left and right, and have auto fire, they could work fine.

Sony needed to do something like the AppStore a year ago for the PSP. And I don't just mean open a storefront but rather also offer serious amounts of legitimate gaming content right from the start, like Apple has with its dev partners. It's not going to take long at this rate for iPhone/Touch to become a serious contender in the mobile gaming space. You might miss out a bit in the shortrun, but it won't last long.

I'm looking at stuff from EA on the AppStore like Scrabble and Tetris and I'm wondering why games of this ilk have yet to make it on the PSN Store for the PSP and instead we continue to get just faint trickle of games. Where's the disconnect - is it with Sony? is it with EA or other 3rd parties?

If you move just left and right, and have auto fire, they could work fine.
Using what? Virtual controls via touch, or tilt? The concerns I have are that you'd have to obscure part of the screen with your fingers. For a shooter where you're intent on every bullet, I'd think that'd be a no-no.

I wouldn't necessarily jump to do that. What I would tell you though is to think about how you are going to use it. Do you bring your PSP everywhere you go? Do you bring an iPod everywhere you go? I always need music in my pocket so my iPod was always with me. When I bought the iPhone I stopped carrying the iPod around. I used to take my iPhone and a PSP around with me, but since the app store for the iPhone launched I stopped carrying my PSP around with me.

If you use portable gaming in 15-20 minutes bursts when you are out in public then the app store games are awesome. If you use your PSP around the house for full fledged games like Lumines, Loco Roco, Crisis Core, whatever... then the app store games may not be for you. My experience with the games so far is they are great diversion games.

For me personally I play my PSP around the house a lot for deeper game experiences and use the app store games when I'm out in public and have a couple of minutes to mess around.

I've just played two levels of it and seems fun. definitely very well made and polished, and the controls feel great. I hope there are some decent puzzles later on.

Apple usually have an iPod conference in September to show off the new models in time for the holidays. If you can get a good price now go for it, just don't be surprised come september.

for touch people:

get instapaper off the app store, it's a really nice offline internet reader. just put the bookmark in your safari bar, and click when you want to save a page to read offline. i've used it a bunch already and i just got it today.

I'm looking for an App that acts like a vault that I can use to store all my usernames/passwords ect for whatever I want. Anyone seen anything like this?
