The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Someone really needs to do a gamertag app. I want to be able to pull up my friendslist quickly, fire off messages, and check and reply to them. Would be sort of like what was promised at xbox launch, only finally done on a mac product. :lol

Basically xbox.com lite.

Both Iphone and Sixaxis have instantaneously responsive accelerometers. It's the software implementation in some games that sucks. Try Labyrinth (it's got a free demo) and you'll see.

Tried it, not responsive enough. Same goes for sixaxis, there's always a slight lag where the motion happens after you've moved. I think it's becuase they both use standard accellerometers whereas the Wiimote uses that 200hz (I think it's that much) refresh that makes it much more responsive. Check Iwata Asks and you'll see what I mean.

Is it good?

Re: GTR World Racing

Yes, I find it rather good. It does take some time to adjust to the concept of using tilt to steer the car, but you eventually get used to it and become quite proficient at it with practice. The graphics are very well done for an early iPhone/Touch game and it's easily one of the best looking games on the App Store. Wanted may eclipse it in terms of overall visuals, but it does what it needs to do very well. The framerate seems very competent, also. I didn't find a lot of slowdown while playing the game.

Just got the SMB update, it makes no difference to the controls. All it does is add a tutorial, the controls still suck balls.

I don't think the iphone's accellerometer is up to the task TBH, it's more like the Sixaxis than the Wiimote. I've tried other games like Cube Runner and Spinner (Which feature the most responsive controls on the system) and they aren't nearly as responsive as the Wiimote, despite only having to detect rotational movements (Which is what the accellerometer was designed to detect and is best at detecting)

Not true. This is all governed by the game interpolation. Proper games usually have a setting to allow you to adjust the sensitivity of the accelerometers.

I've been working on an iPhone game for a little while now and it's starting to come together nicely... I'll have to post some details and screenshots here (if that's allowed) before it goes up on the App Store.

Yes, please do!

Be really interested to know what you think of developing for the device, too.

Basically xbox.com lite.

There are several apps that due this already, although they are not all created equal. I've been using both 1337pwn and iLive and they both work pretty well, although neither is completely perfect. Updates are coming soon that are going to expand their abilities however, but if I were recommending one right now, definitely go with 1337pwn. The one linked above.

Sweet! Thanks guys. I never knew.

EDIT:Ok so having just installed it and spent a minute fooling around on it, I can say this is nothing like what I was talking about.

I want something that has a login to my existing gamertag and gives me my friendslist (none of this manual entry shit), ability to approve/decline friend requests, read/delete/reply to messages, compare gamerscores. And I'd really like it to look as official as possible, and not so '1337'. These are things you can all do from xbox.com with a simple login of your live id.

Thanks for looking out though fellahs

There is nothing like that, not even on Windows or anything.

It feels the same to me. Did you actually notice a difference or just expect it to play differently because they announced they were working on some fixes?
AAMOF i had not even seen that announcement. what's funny is that for some time i mistakenly thought i had the update, even though i actually didn't (too many updates, not paying attention which is which), but did not bother to try it.

yes, the update does change notably the controls. for once, i managed to beat the first world without a sweat on my first sitting after months of shunning the game.

1337pwn has already announced that they are working on an update that will allow you to manage your friends lists on the fly using their app. It seems like more integration is coming, and this will probably be the best you can get outside of an official app from MS, which I wouldn't hold my breath for.

is there any particular reason why i would have gotten the 2.0 update for my ipod touch for free rather than paying 10 bucks for it?

kinda weird :P

Did you pay for the iPhone apps? If your answer is yes there you go.

Has anyone else bought Vay? It's a full-featured Sega CD RPG that is actually playable with touch controls. The pathfinding on the map is worse than Baldur's Gate I, but it's still really fun. And only $4.99. Try it out if you like old-school, equipment swapping, grinding, silly voiceacting awesomeness.

Hmm... my interest in handheld gaming was reinvigorated after playing games on the iPhone, so I picked up my slim & lite PSP, spent some time charging it, updated the firmware and was completely shocked at the screen being so low-res - a screen that I thought at one point was the most beautiful screen in a gaming portable. But 480 x 272 just doesn't cut it anymore; coupled with the archaic non-touch screen, non-motion sensitive interface the PSP simply feels ancient. Time is not kind to bleeding-edge tech gadgets.

New PSP improves it GREATLY.

Is this game redundant if I have the Full version on PC?

Sorry I don't have the PC version. But I think it should complement it. Spore Origins is an unabashed Flow clone, with customization options; so you can evolve your creature the way you want it to. The customization is not particularly extensive, and you only control the a single cell (?) creature for 30 levels, so I imagine it's rather limited compared to the PC version. But the game looks gorgeous, controls well, and is great for short bursts of entertainment. Being able to use the camera to overlay skins on your creature is a hoot as well. It's a surprisingly polished release from EA, makes me crave for an intel Mac so I can play the full game!

Official PhoneSaber App on the way:

In August, we noted that the popular PhoneSaber application for the iPhone had been pulled at the request of Lucasfilm. PhoneSaber was a light saber "simulator" complete with sound effects.

As promised, the developer announced that an official version is on the way and it should be available soon in the App Store:

The app will have a new name and a whole new look. The new version, Lightsaber Unleashed, will have a strong link to the new multi-platform title Star Wars ®: The Force Unleashed™, which is out soon. Lightsaber Unleashed will feature exciting characters from this new game as well as vastly improved graphics, sound effects and optional dueling music (which was a popular request).

The new version of the App will still be free.

Anyone play Real Soccer 2009? Any impressions?

Considering it's a 1st generation soccer game, it's very impressive. The 3D visuals are nice and I didn't really see any real slowdown. The controls are actually quite good also. The game uses a virtual D-pad overlaid on the left bottom of the screen and virtual A and B buttons on the right. Now, Gameloft, isn't exactly known for their spectacular 3D sports games, but if this is any indication of what they can do in their limited time with it then I can't wait to see what EA does with FIFA. A lot of people were laughing when the iPhone/Touch was compared to a PSP, well, they're not laughing anymore.

Also, Spore Origins is amazing on the iPhone.

So me and two friends are close to finishing up preproduction of a game we are working on putting out and also to showcase in our final capstone presentation for graduation. I hope to share it with GAF later on in the the year when we have made good progress.:D

real soccer 2009 has blown me away. it went beyond what i thought the iphone could do this early on. its like playing a PS1 version of Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution Soccer. if anyone is familiar with the series back in the PS1 days and loved it then real soccer 2009 isnt far off that. cant wait for EA sports work like previously said

I agree, the game is surprisingly good. My three main issues are:

-Sometimes I'm so focused on the action that my fingers miss the soft buttons/d-pad.
-Double taps and diagonals don't always register.
-Because I have to hold the iPhone sideways, my fingers cover up the speakers, cutting out most of the sound.

Still, really impressive.

I hope someone is working on a full-fledged MLB baseball game.

It should be free. It's pretty much useless.
I'd imagine it'd be 1.99 or 99 cents like many of the other "non-officially licensed' apps on that store.

--------------

Thought I'd mention this:

Apps from Pangea Software are on sale on the App Store.

Enigmo - $4.99

Cool puzzle game that was lauded by critics.
You're directing the flow of different kinds of liquids (water, oil, lava) to fill up a container.

Cro-Mag Rally - $1.99

Kart racer that isn't great, but hey, 2 bucks!
This was 9.99 when the store launched and lowered a little bit some time ago.

Billy Frontier - $3.99

Don't know much about this game, looks like a shooter with wacky sci-fi style.

Pangea VR-Pro - $14.99

For viewing 360 degree pana pictures. There is a free version, this one just lets you save pics on the phone.

I hate the App Store. It's way too easy to buy stuff.

I just enter my password and I've made a purchase. Part of the reason why I have so many XBLA games, too.

Any GAF reactions to Spore Origins?

and Enigma for 5 bucks is a good deal. great puzzle game.

I've played Spore to level 10 so far. It's basically Flow for the PS3 but you get to change your character as you are playing. Each stage presents you with the goal of either collecting enough DNA points to move on (ie, eat enough stuff) while other stages require you to follow the current and get to a certain point on the level. The creature creation is pretty limited based on what I have seen so far, but I've also been pretty bad about finding the evolution points or whatever they call them.

It's probably the most engaging iPhone game I've played so far, but that really doesn't say much. I've bought Pinball RC, Dizzy Bee, Monkey Ball, Enigmo, and now this. For me, it's still nothing more than a diversion but it's actually fun enough that I've played it on a few occasions.

For $5 it'd be a no brainer... for $10, ehhh. I'd still probably recommend it.

You all need to buy Star Trigon. It's from the Mr. Driller team, it works perfectly on the iPhone (since it's essentially a one button game), art and sound production values are high, and it's fun as shit. GO GO GO.

I see two different Spore games for Iphone. One $10 the other $5. They have different file sizes as well, but go under same name: Spore Origins. What's the deal here?
