Hi all, I have a huge Free Friday at The Current Gamer, starting with 5 promo codes for UNIFY. If I can give them away early enough, I also have codes for Hook Champ and Skull Pogo to give away. The giveaway is the first thing you see on TheCurrentGamer.com

I'd like a Unify one if you still have it left! Thanks.

Clip of the game. Looks really nice, I might just grab it. The App Store is a bit lacking in hardcore strategy.
I saw this over on another forum:
A little warning for those contemplating Romance of the Three kingdoms. It's been overly simplified/streamlined for iPhone consumption, there are no different types of troops, no duels and you can't choose what to develop in your cities. It's still RotK and still very good, it just got the "Civ Rev treatment" so beware if it's not your thing.

Nice! I've been wanting to try Unify for a while.

Hello there.. I asked a few days ago if it was considered good etiquette to show self-developed games and now I am rapidly approaching the end of development cycle for my own iPhone game so I want to brag a bit about it.

Actually this isn't a one man effort, as four people actively designed / developed / created assets for this game plus a few more helped testing both the concept and the game. Bliddo, also from NeoGAF and of Star Ride fame, helped with development (hi Bliddo :-)).

First and foremost it is a satisfaction to complete such a task -- from design to publishing in six months (all while having a full time job and a not-so-small family) means it's been sometimes a rough ride.. I can't recall last time I've slept more than five hours a night! But it's well worth it, I think every gamer should design his / her own game at least once in a lifetime.

As for the game itself, it's a somewhat original production, not a clone of anything else. I really like the iPhone because it's home to many fresh ideas, I really wanted to add mine.

In this game, which is called Mystery Files, we introduce two fictional characters -- young detectives not unlike Nancy Drew / The Hardy Boys who will solve mystery cases.

We also have been definitely impressed by Phoenix Wright games (Barbara has gone to Japan once just because she wanted to hunt down a few pieces of PW paraphernalia) so you will find a bit of those games in it, too.

There is much more than this but for the moment I just want to leave you with a couple of screenshots, which are in Italian as the whole team is based in Italy. English translations are on the way so I will get more information here as soon as I have something to show.

Here you see a sample dialog (again, sorry for the non-english content) and the game interface on the background:

And here's a screenshot of the PDA you will use to review clues and make the most out of them:

Happy weekend people, I hope this is my last sleepless one. :D

Rock Band is just great. I respect Tap Tap's pricing etc, but, honestly, Rock Band is just so polished and neat I can't say that it isn't worth the money. It's just the better game, and at the sale price is a steal.

I agree with you. It's super fun to jump into from time to time. I bought a couple of the track packs as well.

Hi all, were giving away 3 copies of Skullpogo on TheCurrentGamer.com will be picking the winners tonight at midnight :) Will be extending givaways tomorrow. Still have giveaways coming this weekend for Hook Champ, iplutoid, and Hattrick.

By the way I am currently reviewing hattrick and am really having a blast with it. It is a table top soccer game with realistic physics and sounds. Definetely remaining part of my permanent collection.

I wish I had an Canadian account right now.
I've been waiting so long for Eliminate to be approved im almost worried my expectations are too high now

Where the heck is Card Ace?

Helava? What's the hold up? I'm itchin' for some Word Ace style old school Texas Hold 'Em...!

I don't know. It was submitted a while back - I've been out of the loop for the last two weeks (had a kid!)... it should be any day now, but it seems like all our submissions end up taking forever, because we invariably get rejected for something or another. (Seriously - every single submission for every game (and every update) has been rejected at least once. :) )

So... yeah. I dunno. Traffic's huge on the Pre, and the Facebook version's online (http://apps.facebook.com/cardace) - the iPhone version should be live any day... I hope.

Man Doom is so smooth!

Controls are slightly oversensitive, but there're some interesting options, including a virtual steering wheel to turn.

I'm not sure if I like the recentering d-pads (ie you have to place your thumb and then slide to move) better or the fixed (so you can just tap, but also slide). I seem to work well with both, but when I use the slide only with recentering, I have to turn the d-pads off visually. Ineed them on if I have tap. I find the tap zones to be so large - often when I reach up to fire, unless you press really high, you will also turn.

The game is ultra smooth. Redone graphics I think. And man, this game is scary! The balance of doom, so that you actually feel like you could die is really well done, and why it garnered so much praise in the day. The feel and atmosphere still puts some FPS today to shame!

The map is well done, easy access, and you can tap and pinch to move the map around. Nice. Auto save (for when you simply exit the game), plus one quick save slot, so when you die you can go back to the start of the level or to where you last saved.

One really nice thing about this game is that it also loads up real fast - I really appreciate that.

heleva: Can't wait for Card Ace! Dunno why, since I barely play Word Ace (haven't had much time to play online games (I don't have a data plan). Sacrilege, but I have limited icon space (I limit games to two pages), and have been thinking about getteng rid of word ace, just because I barely play it anymore. That said, if card ace is out soon, I'll probably like to see the icons next to each other... maybe I should start a third page....

What do you think of Apple's policy to allow in-app purchasing on free apps now? Will that change your business model for the Ace series? I'm still going to buy card ace for whatever you charge, just because I think you deserve it. I'm sure Card Ace is up to the same high standards as Word Ace.

Congrats on the new addition, btw. :)

re: Apple's policy - I think it's great that they're finally allowing in-app purchase on free apps. We'd love to have not had Word Ace Pro, and have had all the chip purchasing done in Word Ace. The problem is, for a variety of *other* reasons, which I probably can't talk about, we're actually going to have to shift Word Ace / Card Ace to the Zynga style "booster app" model on the iPhone. It's awful, but unfortunately, because of the various other restrictions around in-app purchase, we've got no choice.

The base game of Card Ace will be free, just as Word Ace was, and if you want additional chips, packages will be available from $1 to $50. And when 1.1 comes out for CA/WA, which we're still working on (the commerce stuff ended up taking up a lot of time to sort out), we're going to have in-app purchase for donations & other in-game stuff.

So I'm thinking of buying Zenonia, anyone play it?
yeah just finished it the other day actually. The localization is kinda awful in parts (The part when anyone talks) But the combat is really fun. I was playing it alongside a friend and we were playing different classes and always talking about our loot and purple swords and stuff.
The whole game has a bunch of western rpg stuff like re-rolling and a (small) Skill tree. oh and the loot. With a Japanese art style and "story"
All and all it's not bad

dude just create a canadian account, it'll take like 5 mins. I just did it and Eliminate is syncing right now :D

if you need help, you can follow this guide and substitute Canada for US, obviously.

And funny enough im in Canada at the moment too

So Defender's Chronicle is alright, but probably would be better as a 1.99 or .99 game as opposed to a 3.99 game. 2nd best TD game I've played on the iPod Touch

I payed $3 so it was a bargain. For $6 it's definitely worth it. I stopped playing it but that was like after 30 hours. The main flaw with the game is that it's formula gets a bet tedious, but if you can deal with that you got a lot of game time. Hell even if you can't you will.

What makes the game so special is that it's a full realized game and not something that is merely pick up and play. In short it's a game that can get ported to the Nintendo DS or the PSP and still manage to get decent reviews.

You are welcome! Enjoy! I know I am. Hook Champ is definetely one of my top favorite iPhone games currently. It really takes me back to my Sega Genesis and NES days. The controls are really well done, and the gameplay is a blast.

And who doesn't love that store? Hat shopping? Yes please!

Has anybody tried Wordace yet? It's like Texas hold-em meets Scrabble. It's fun but some people sit by their computer to figure out the best words. Online is cross platform iPhone, pre and facebook which I thought was cool, and you can make a friends list.

I was at a friends house talking to his brother, and he worked on the palm version :lol so I checked it out.

Interesting. What's the 'booster app' style? Completely separate apps? Thanks for taking the time to post!

When it was released, there was a dedicated following, and even a dedicated thread. Most of were obsessed with it and I was even staying up until 4am on work nights playing it! Ah, good times. Unfortunately, cheating (looking up words on an anagrammer) was frowned upon, so to keep it fun we didn't do it (I had a few early games where I did - I didn't know it was bad. It does take the fun out). But many people online DID use them, and that makes playing random players less fun, as you really don't have a hope of winning. Playing with GAF was great fun, but as time went on, fewer and fewer 'friends' were online.

It is an amazing concept, and very well thought out and executed.

In other news, been slogging through Doom Classic. Man, I love this game. The levels are so much fun, and slaughtering demons with the very well-balanced game mechanics of doom hasn't changed a bit.

The engine is insanely smooth, with beefed up textures and sound, but retaining the old school charm.

I have a feeling the aim is much more forgiving, which is good, because while the controls are certainly playable, I don't feel in complete control. I'll frequently use walls to slide against, for example. I'm not sure what I like better - the non-centering (where it shows up as a d-pad), or the re-centering. The problem with the latter is you can't do tap-tap motions - you have to press and slide (like a virtual analogues stick). The problem with the former is that the tap-tap can be accidentally triggered (you can still use it as a slide too). For whatever reason, the touch area that activates turning, say, extends beyond the graphic, and often, when I reach up to fire, I hit just beneath the fire button, making it fire AND turn (as much as 45 degrees).

Still, I have managed to get half way through episode II on the hardest difficulty.

Everything apart from controls are PERFECT. The controls aren't bad, just have a few niggles for me.

For the record, I've been using 50% sized controls, graphics on, centering off, ramping off, touch click off, auto use on.

I think this is the best version of Doom classic apart from the controls. It feels more complete than other versions I've played, and looks and runs gorgeous. I think the best controls were the GBA version - a d-pad, fire use, and L/R for strafe is perfect.

Eliminate has been aproved!!!
:/

ngmoco's slippery slope: Eliminate and TouchPets
I’ve been a fan of ngmoco since I played their first game for the iPhone. Great innovators, great polish, good stuff. You’re always guaranteed something well designed and thought out. ngmoco has also always charged a decent premium price for their games. I bought Rolando 2 for $10 and Star Defense for $6. I had no problem paying these prices in an AppStore full of $0.99 games because ngmoco’s polish was through the roof, and with the recent Plus+ integration, I was totally drinking the ngmoco koolaid.

Now though, I fear we’ve lost these talented devs to something called greed. Not intent with charging for games traditionally, they’ve opted to release games for free and require you to pay-to-play. Now I’m no stranger to this formula, I’ve played MMOs and the like, but I wasn’t quite expecting it to be so dramatically greedy that it severely effected my willingness to play.

Having played Eliminate, one of my #1 anticipated games for the iPhone, I was impressed. It featured the same amount of ngmoco polish, even more than any game I’d seen from them. Beautiful graphics, great music, kinda-decent-enough controls, and a cool upgrade system. When they accounced you’d only be able to get “credits” (the in-game currencey for buying new upgrades) while having “Energy” (something that dissipates when you play), I was already nervous. Now that I’ve played it, I can safely say this structure will ruin their games for me. I managed to play 3 five minute games online with the amount of energy supplied for “the day”. Now that I’d met that quota, I could either wait a day or two for my energy to recharge to make my combat time worthwhile, or I could buy more energy and keep playing. Basically the energy they supplied lasted about 15 minutes, and by that time, I was already in a “guess you have to spend some money!” scenario.

But that isn’t even the worst. TouchPets, essentially a pet-simulator akin to things like Nintendogs or Petz, also has these in-game purchase options. Except this isn’t for anything like vanity items, toys, clothes, or other needless things for your pet, it’s for FOOD. That’s right, any of the virtual currency you earn in TouchPets can only be used to buy clothing and toys for your newly adopted puppy. If you want to keep him fed, and therefore maintain a status of a decent master and not some terrible Michael Vick villain, you need to spend $1.99 to buy more food. My dog’s energy had gone down to zero after teaching him some tricks and playing for a bit. After feeding him the single bowl of food the game includes with a new pet, he was hungry again within a few hours. I was shocked to realize that despite having over $1,000 of in-game money, there was no way to keep my puppy from whimpering from hunger other than busting open the in-app purchases and spending the $2 for more food. Considering $2 gets you 20 bowls of food, and the dog seems he could eat 2 bowls or more a day, you’re roughly spending $2 every 10 days to play. That’s 6 dollars a month, and that’s $72 a year. To play a pet simulator. And that’s if you keep your gametime to a minimum, because the more you play with your dog, the hungrier it gets.

Is this what you’ve come to ngmoco? Please change. Please go back to charging a premium for your games so real customers like myself and many others can go back to enjoying your great work for what it was, and not for it permanently hovering over my wallet.

Horrible.

man that's fucked up re: TouchPets, and I guess if you do get into the game, the eventual cost of 'food' will probably end up being more than the cost of an EyePet :lol

Though I wasn't really anticipating it in anyway, I didn't enjoy Eliminate much either, the aiming felt extremely awkward to me and the 'auto lock' it has just doesn't work at all. . .the 2 games I played online were fine but lagged every so often when things got a bit hectic.

At least the CGI intro was pretty cool.

Yeah I hate that. I've been tempted to get The Sims 3 but no demo dosnt help. Then again apple stores now have Sims3 demo versions on their show floor products. I played it a bit but it didnt help at all.

Command and Conquer is out.

And it's a nice game. Pretty good graphics for an iPhone game. The controls are ok, though scrolling feels a bit stuttery. Not too happy with the sound though. No epic unit voices here:(.

Played a bit of Skirmish. Only two maps it appears, and there aren't a lot of units available. But according to EA, there will be an Empire faction add-on soon, aswell as multiplayer. Probably no online multiplayer though:(.

And yes, there aren't any cutscenes. They're a big part of Red Alert, but I haven't seen them in this game yet, and I probably won't either.

But the gameplay part is just fine. It reminds me of the pc version, and it plays a lot like it. More maps, more units now please:D!
