The Official Jeanne D'arc Thread - SRPG goodness from Level5 for 29.99$

Same, I hadn't played FFT before but after finishing Jeanne I was amped for more SRPG so I loaded up FFT and, uh ... yeah. Smelled like moth-balls.

For me it's the opposite. I played a bit of Jeanne, then played 36 hours of FFT in 3 days (so good) and then tried Jeanne again and the game just felt....not as good. I cannot to death stand the fact that they limit the amount of turns in a battle. Some of my favorite SRPG moments come from the desperate last stand as I recover my forces.

The regenerating health is too much, I need more turns.

Goddammit, I'm STILL stuck there. I think I might have to start the whole game over since I accidentally over-wrote my save. Crappola.

Game is alright so far but I am just playing it in my nighttime.

Gilles and Rufus seem extremely weak though, like don't even use them weak.

Funnily enough, those are 2 of the best characters later in the game :lol

Finally got around to ordering this. Hopefully it should arrive on the other side of the weekend for my days off.

I just started this the other day and holy balls this game is way better than I thought it was going to be!

I had heard word of it's greatness, but it always looked very generic and boring. I couldn't have been more wrong.

If you like SRPGs, definitely import it. The game looks great and is a blast to play. It's also nice to support games that are developed specifically for the PSP as they have been pretty few and far between. I would recommend it to anyone who likes SPRGs.

I thought I heard Sony weren't releasing this in the UK, so importing is the way to go and will certainly be cheaper. This is a must have BTW. My handheld GOTY of last year. It was just fantastic all the way. Buy it.

I have no idea about any EU release date, but imho it's worth importing it (as I did).
The game is fun, challenging, it looks good AND it's also sold at a very low price.

Hai guyz. This may be a stupid question (considering this thread) but what SRPG should I buy: Final Fantasy Tactic: War of the Lions, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness or Jeanne D'arc? The only SRPG I ever played was Advance Wars... if that can be labeled as an SRPG :p

So yeah, I'm a first timer. Which game is most suited for me?

Wow, that's a tough question as the games are all pretty drastically different.

Disgaea is more of a quirky sRPG with humor and insane depth as far as levelling goes which you could probably play forever if you didn't get bored. I've only played the PS2 version but it was fun, though I admittedly gave up after about 20 hours because I got bored of it.

Jeanne d'Arc has some beautiful anime scenes and gorgeous graphics. I personally didn't like the lack of customization as you start out only able to equip two special moves, eventually moving up to five (I think?). The game is more serious and has a pretty good story, though I've not yet finished it.

Final Fantasy Tactics is great for customization, being able to switch your classes around and really learning how to use your characters. It's story is great and the new cutscenes and voice acting are fucking gorgeous. I'd reccomend this one personally, but I find it is much more difficult than the other two, and also more "serious".

I asked the same question a month or so ago. I ended up buying all 3. FFT and Disgaea are a bit overwhelming for a beginner, for different reasons; FFT has a lot of depth and is pretty difficult, Disgaea will throw a ton of options at you from the start. I've sunk some time into both. You can't go wrong with Jeanne D'arc, the game is straight forward enough, without any complicated game mechanics. Binding skills & giving your character a zodiac alignment is as tricky as it gets.

Thanks for the explanation batbeg, much appreciated!

I think I'll go with Jeanne D'arc. It seems more accessible than the others... although I really liked Disgaea's humor when I saw one of the PS2 games played at a friends house. Yeah, Jeanne D'arc is my choice.

(EDIT) And spindoc agrees with me. Thanks for the input :)

Yeah, I didn't really consider that. FFT was my first ever sRPG, and I was 11 or 12 at the time, and it was a fucking nightmare to play through! Jeanne d'Arc would make for a great beginners sRPG and is a great game to boot though, so there's definitely no going wrong with it! Enjoy :)

I'm getting addicted to Jeanne, my chars are about level 34 now. Sometimes it pisses me off, like when it wanted me to escort the king dude with 70 hps, when I am almost through the level owning everything in my path the CPU spawns an archer in the rear and kill the dude in one shot. That was fair....

I feel like magic is a bit of a let down, the computer uses it but I only have one semi-weak magic guy (Richard). I also hate that my damn axe guy Ruphus moves so little, he misses most of the fight by lagging in the back.

You do get access to other primary magic types (
Clare
) and let's not forget that Liane is arguably a magic based character as well.

While I'm here, can someone help with the end fight (I assume)?

When you're in the room that spawns the four demons while you make your way to Henry, and you get Roger forced into your party and can't let him die. He's several levels below my party and of course all of the mobs go straight for him when I try. Any tips? Loved the game until this point and it'd be a shame not to see it through. :(

Seriously? Almost everyone I have has at least one magic spell equipped, because it allows them long distance and there seem to be quite a few magic-vulnerable enemies. As someone else noted, Liane has decent magic attack, along with Claire (and level up Richard a little, he's definitely good). I also have Rose on my team (instead of Claire) and she actually has decent magic attack. I've also given the kid archer some spells for when Meteor Shot just ain't cutting it (come to think of it, Beatrix (the other archer, the elf) is also decent).

I'm only in about 7 or 8 hours now but I'm absolutely loving it. It's significantly more accessible for me than FFT was. (Not that I'm giving up on FFT, just taking a break for now!). Characters are around level 14 or 15 and I'm just figuring the tactics of using the burning auras and the sol, luna and stella effects on various enemies. Good stuff so far.

I've finally gotten around to playing this. What an awesome game. SRPGs and handhelds are a perfect match. Any rumblings of any other SRPGs from Level5 for ds/psp?

I've been completely hooked on this game since picking it up 2 weeks ago. Everyone who owns a PSP really needs to check this out.

I just got to Chapter IV where
Jeanne "dies" and Lianne is suddenly the new main character. Of course, she'd been sitting the bench since about the 4th battle, so she was Level 14 when everyone else is 30. Why do so many RPGs have this nonsense where they suddenly force you to use characters that may or may not have been sitting the bench the whole time? Ah well, with her ability to use the armlet, it's only taken me 3 battles to get her from 14 to 27. Still annoying.

Anyway, I love this game. Everyone should go buy it.

I played and finished Tactics this Christmas (friend bought it for me as a gift), I loved the story (political intrigue, regional disputes, crystals that grant power to twisted users) but the ending left much to be desired...I didn't even realize it was over untill the credits started rolling. It all ended so abruptly, and screamed for a sequel.

In contrast, Jeanne D'Arc was also a great game, the ending was more fullfilling, and the production values were higher. Both games should be in the library of an SRPG enthusiast.

I desperately want to see a proper FFT sequel for the PS3 or PSN. AFAIC, SE can drop *everything* else and focus on that.

I finished Jeanne d'Arc also and, as a french player I'm glad I imported it as it seems it won't reach our shores...(

One thing that surprised me ingame was how overpowered my thief was (Colet is the name). He's unstoppable, I just have to place him behind an ennemy to hit its weak point for massive damage. If the ennemy survives, his chance to counter attack are 5% only... Even the reapers didn't have a chance. Colet FTW! <3

That's the the thing about Colet, I thought he was wimpy at first (and he is) but after some steady leveling-up, he becomes an absolute monster. He is naturally positioned to making critical strikes with high probability, not to mention pairing him up with a 3 strike crystal has him dealing unholy damage each turn, not to mention that most enemies can never return the favor, as he barely gets hit due to his his high evasion.

Pray for a FFT sequel, it was a well crafted story, but felt a little rushed towards the end.

shes actually very useful for using magic if you keep her lvl up, however, you'll get another character you can replace her with later on. also, the best part of the story is coming up :)

Hes right. Best PSP game, by far imo. And I'm not much for SRPGs.

After putting in so many hours into DOTA, I decided to employ similar logic. High agility character = Good crits + Good evasion + High mobility. I neglected him for the first 2 chapters and then I decided to boost him up. Apart from magic attacks, he's a far better tank than any of the other high HP characters. Use Provoke+Preemptive, and he can wreck a crowd in no time!

I just finished the God damned Dwarven Mine fight (#29 I think) and hated every second of it. Save before fight: 35:00. Save after fight: 36:57. And the thing is the fight was so EASY. I could have taken out the boss in a few turns with my archer and long distance magic (and did knock him down to near-death near the beginning) but I wanted to see what all the treasures were (in the end, the last one was 1000g, WOOPITYDOO).

So yeah, whoever decided to make a freakin' MAZE like level with PUZZLES in a sRPG should be shot. That was agonizing.

Think I'm finally getting pretty close to the end of the game though, even though I bought this when it came out in the US :lol

Finally managed to finish this, and while I've enjoyed the gameplay for the most part, it was the story that edged me on for the last 2 chapters. About the last fight:
Stupid pillars dont take damage for crap! WTF
Good ending, I felt spoilt with all the anime style cutscenes! I don't know if I would go back and clear the game+ stuff, the lack of multiplayer discourages me from investing any more time into it.

Now to finally dive into FFT!

Finally finished this last night. Since I went into Jeanne completely blind, I was shocked by how long it was. I was expecting a 20ish hour game, but my final save game time was just about 44 hours.

I'd have to say this has easily been my favorite experience on the PSP.

I almost beat it last night.

Last fight, Jeanne was 6 MP short of her big damage attack, so I had to settle for a normal one. Got the last boss down to 60hps, then he got regened up over 1000 HPs in the next couple of round. My guys were out of gas and healing potions. Game over, I lost...

I guess I could level up and do the last part again, but I hate the way they string a bunch of levels together.

I'm at 20 hours give or take and I was really surprised at the polish that this game held. I went to a Best Buy to get FFT, but as they were sold out, I decided to give Jeanne a shot, I guess I made out ok.

One thing that bugs the hell out of me though is that you defeat a 'boss' only to have him get up and escape in the following cutscene.

Fucking Talbot.

You know, the last fight was one of the best moments to me while playing the game.
Winning that battle wasn't easy and 'til the end I was sure I was gonna lose. I had my characters getting killed one after the other while I was trying to balance killing pillars and some of the weakest enemies, avoiding the stronger ones and healing up enough to survive the boss attacks.
If it wasn't for aoe damage hitting bigger enemies more, I wouldn't have made it.

It's mine (very closely followed by Hot Shots Golf). I put in 40+ hours into this game and I rarely play games like this. I'm always glad to see this thread pop up on the front page every now and then and see that more and more people are loving the game.

About to enter Orleans, Jeanne 27, everyone else from 20-24. Overpowered?

Yes! I'll bet you made short work of that mission and the ones after it.

I just started playing and I beat that mission with my guys all around lvl 14 and Jeanne a few lvls higher.

This is an incredible game, just begging for a sequel (prequel?) on PS2 or PS3.
I am looking for the soundtrack, does any GAFer know where to get it / buy it?

So 3 months since my last post, and over half a year since I bought the damn game, I've finally beat it :lol

What a horrible, horrible ending. Both in the gameplay and the story. The game just felt so incredible for the first few hours, but it just grows more and more mediocre as time goes on. Still, I got 45 hours of fun out of it (well, a few hours of frustration too), and it was an overall okay-good game I think.

Question though... why the hell could I use the frog in the last fight if the King's soul had left it?

I came over this in a import store today (Dungeoncrawl, Melb AU). Been thinking about buying it for the last year but it never came to PAL (ironic considering the England vs France story) so I picked it up when I got the chance today. Last time I tried it was TGS 06. It had some framerate problems back then but now it runs smoothly with equally sized battles. It's refreshing to have a PSP game where you're not navigating claustrophobic 3d environments with camera problems and a horrible framerate. The production values are the highest I've seen for any srpg, stunning graphics for the PSP. I'm still early in the game so will be interesting to see where it goes.

Just started playing this game again today after taking a break for a while (Persona 4), and I have forgotten what a great game this is. The story, the gameplay, and the graphics are all top notch. This is one of my favorite games on the PSP!

wow, if i knew this game was THIS fucking good I would have bought it long ago. holy shit, i stayed up till 4am last night cause I couldn't stop playing. :lol graphics are incredibly rich, lush and full of character and personality. the story is interesting, the sound is great, music is great. everything about this game is great. it's been a long time since i've had this feeling where i start getting worried the game will end, instead wanting it to go on much more, but this game has done just that.

if you have a PSP, you owe it to yourself to get this game.
