The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Just had to share a great Rooftop finale from last night...
It's just me on the Infected, and 2 of my friends on the Survivors side.

They're just about to win, the Helicopter's on it's way.
The director throws me a tank at this very last moment, while they run towards the chopper. I proceed to go after one, knock her off the building, while 2 more get into the helicopter. The last Survivor is on his way but limping, so the chopper can't leave yet.

So, I've got a few seconds to attempt to kill these 2 bastards in the helicopter.
...well, the helicopter can hold a shitload of weight. I join them in the chopper and start beating the crap out of them, and hop out just in time to smack the last Survivor around and incapacitate him as well.

Epic win. :D

Oh, I'm aware. I was hiding underneath all four survivors (so I thought) trying to let the tank get close enough while I was the boomer. I was either shot through the floor or through some strange angle through a side window, though. I never saw who shot me.

And when there's a tank, it typically seems like everyone else is spawning or dead or far away, so the survivors just help back up anyone who gets incapacitated, while killing the tank, before help can arrive.
:lol Don't pay attention to him. Even if you had played a flawless game odds are he would've still whined, that's just how that guy is.

That said, if you're playing a boomer don't stand around planning a perfect boom. Just hit them as soon as you spawn. The reason is this: the other three zombies cant do shit unless the boomer does something, so every second you delay your boom is time that the other three infected have to stand around waiting for an opening.

So, now that you've got the game for a while guys, is it still worth it if I'm not going to bother with online? What's the sp experience light? Does it have local co-op/split-screen?

I'd say the online play is the best part of the game. I don't consider it a singleplayer game at all, it's more like CS:S or TF2 to me.
...so my suggestion is that you take your ass online and get into the game for real. :)

I couldn't imagine playing L4D offline.

Well I bought it for the PC, so the whole reason for my purchase was online play. I've also played it for the 360 with a friend, and it seems that the max on local players is two.

Unless it's not just preference, I highly recommend playing online. With dedicated servers, online is where this game shines.

So just rush them quickly as the boomer? Ok, I was wondering how to play the boomer effectively.

Well, I've played through most of the campaigns SP, but it tends to be a lot duller when you're not bitching/laughing/screaming like a little sissy with people. Still pretty fun though, and it does have 2 player split screen, but if you can't go online I'd wait till you can get it for $30 or so.

btw i have a theory that the A.I. Director is just every item and zombie in the game put on random spawn timers. Not really "it's out to screw you over" but rather "you have bad luck".
Not quite, you can turn on tension bars and a debug display in the console that show what the director is currently "doing". It's designed to specifically orchestrate moments of high tension, sustain them for a period, and then have relaxation moments afterward to give people a break.

It's a cyclical thing.

Best played with 4 people in a team. I wouldn't recommend it for the sp.

If you're not going to play it MP, don't get it at all, in my opinion.

I agree. Playing for hours (until waaaay too early in the morning) with friends when this unlocked on Steam was some of the best gaming I've had in a long time, but I can't even stand to play with the bots.

Was that with me=avec.eino, somethingnumbers and sonicnumbers? If so then yes. Sonic was miles ahead.
And bad games remind me of my own poor communication skills.
My ping was crazy too.
On that topic: Red ping? In what numbers range is that? And why does't it indicate the ping when you join friends' games or group games? Can you search for friends' games through the console?

All my fat friends are boomers.

360 has split-screen. But no I can't imagine playing the game for long offline. Maybe if it has 4player split-screen and you have three friends who are fun to play with? Might be fun but just for a while. And you miss 8player versus. So no no no. If you can't get online that's sad though.

Bots are a nononono! The bots are not fun AT ALL. I can't stand playing with bots.

Yeh, offline it's a totally different game somehow.

Which is why I cry for my shitty campus internet every lonely night. Have to play this at my parents' house on the weekends with my 6 year old rig.

cant wait to get my new pc hardware iam stuck with a 6 year old shitty pc after the dead of of my real computer and i miss tf2 realy bad and i will get left 4 dead with my new hardware :) i loved the demo. when i remember correctly the demo had 2 parts and each chapter has 5 parts in the real game? and is the community playing custom maps allready or still the original maps?

well dont go too crazy waiting man, i can imagine how you must feel. hehe..

the community doesnt seem to have too much control, nobody i know is choosing specific servers to play on, therefore when something different happens like weird serverside mods, nobody really wanted it.

however, i havent messed around too much with openserverbrowser to see what kinda maps are popping up. i can guarantee theres a couple customs somewhere on this earth.

If you're talking the PC version, if you Shift-Tab the friend overlay up, you can click on your friend's games and see the server info and what kind of ping you get to that server.

Oh shiiit. I totally forgot to tell this story yesterday after it happened!

Blood harvest, level 3. Versus. I got the tank before they even got out of the tunnels (you know the place, with the fence up above the exit, smoker's almost always chillin' there).

I rushed in killin' fools. Two of them got by me somehow, so I chased them down and incap'd 'em. Naturally. The other two were still stuck in the tunnels. One's already incap'd. The other's trying to help him. I charge, the live one runs away, deeper into the tunnels. O: I think to myself, I think: "You know, Twiggy, ol' boy, you don't have that All 4 Dead achievement, yet!" So I revived the dude on the ground, and knocked him right back down. Chased down the other one, knocked him down. Got the achievement.

I thought it was hilarious. But I don't think anyone else appreciated my achievement whoring. I earned it, bitches! ):<

Ok. They REALLLLLLLLLLLLLY need to fix the whole "hanging on for dear life" on PLACES WHERE IT SHOULDNT HAPPEN. I lost in the finale on a vs match because he got caught on an air vent where I usually drop down.

Yea I've had this happen alot on the no mercy finale. There are plenty of tiny ledges with a 5 foot drop that if you get punched over by a tank will trigger the rescue animation despite the tiny drop.

It's a simple fix too, just let people hit a button to drop.

I am going to guess that no answers means it's impossible for you to mute people on your own team. Boo Valve, though I guess they figured that if you didn't like people you should try to votekick them.

Anyway, I was playing vs. PillowKnight last night, and there was some guy named Falco on my team...poor guy. I didn't play very well, and he was constantly yelling at everyone, like "GO! ARE YOU F***ING DEAF? DON'T STAY BACK THERE! DON'T LEAVE [player] ALONE! BOOMER DON'T DIE I'M THE TANK! YEAH, THAT WORKED REALLY F***ING WELL! ARE YOU BLIND? BLIZZARD DOESN'T F***ING LISTEN!"

I guess my problem is that I was just playing to relax and have fun. I don't really get how people get so worked up or scared about a game. :lol I'll try to learn to play a bit better though, hopefully. I don't know whether it's best to try to kill one guy as a tank or take everyone down. My impression was that if you could just make sure one guy dies (or two), your team has a huge advantage. The problem is that it's usually quite hard to get other teammates nearby when you're a tank to finish off people who are knocked down.

Ahahaha, Falco plays this too? I can only imagine how much worse he is in this than TF2. :lol :lol

Yeah, I waited for Black Friday to buy Left 4 Dead. I knew there would be an amazing deal. I have to keep my grades up, so I couldn't have played until Final Exams finish on Dec 10th. Reading through this thread every day and not buying it over Steam was really hard. But this deal is definitely worth the wait.

Now I'm going to buy 2 copies for less than the price of one.

As awesome as saving $30 would be, I felt this game was worth paying more to play from Day 1. It's been a blast to play with so many GAFfers, and very surprising the number of them that have moderate gaming PCs and Steam.

Crowphoenix and I just came from the most competitive Pub game I've had. Final score 435-420. We had early tanks on each of the levels, which probably led to the low scoring game. I think the difference maker was on stage 4, we all made it up the elevator and I was an inch from the safety room where we killed them in the big room on floor #2. Kind of lame how on stage 5, we both got the same score yet we were a near dead tank away from the heli and they weren't even able to call for help.

Crowphoenix called out their weak link in all chat when he meant to do it in team which got them ticked off. :lol

It works for me because I plan on playing with people I know in real life.

I was playing Death Toll on Expert this morning. The 4th slot we had people coming in and leaving countless times. One guy name Ty(something) Pozo joined while we were on the finale. We tell him to come into the closet with us instead of on the opposite side so he wouldn't shoot us. Needless to say, he shot Zoey and then we asked him wtf he was doing. I guess Zoey shot him back not sure if by accident or on purpose. Then ALL of a sudden, I'm getting a vote to be kicked off, I'm sure it was by that idiot. We ended up kicking him.

Why are people such dbags on Steam? I'm still new to Steam, is there any way I can block him or shitlist him so he doesn't join my game or if there would be a popup if he joined my game so I can kick him? It took me 3 hours just to finally beat it and I got no achievement for it. I was there from beginning to end, didn't even go Idle. They seriously need to fix this.

I wouldn't say its "Steam" that has so many dbags as its simply the internet and playing games which are often occupied by the less mature. And yeah, I believe theres the ability to block other steam users.

the problem with teh gametrailers review: you can clearly see he was playing on normal. crank it to expert and learn what real tactics and teamwork is. and dumb, blind luck.

Expert completely fucking transforms the game. For one if you're a dirty friendly fire initiator, you will die. ALL THE TIME. Fuck I died more times by friendly fire than I did by the fucking zombies on expert :lol

Am I the only one who doesn't notice the film grain effect? (PC). I want to say i kind of notice it in the finale of No Mercy with the lightning effect but I think it's just the lightning. I have film grain cranked all the way up too.

Do I need to crank the shaders up?

Hm ya I have the film grain set on default which is pretty low and I can see it pretty easily. I have all graphic options set high as they can go. (Geforce GTX 260 216 core):
