Is there a way to avoid being a tank (w/o cheats of course)

Tank (99 percent of the time) is given as a "reward" to the infected with the most points.

See, I learned something in the game commentary

So... just suck, I guess

That's a shocking statement. I can't remember the amount of times it was given to a player who completely sucks and was sitting in last place. And sometimes he'd get it every level and you're thinking, we're never gonna get a stop if the director doesn't choose somebody else.

It's random but it is weighted towards the higher scoring players. Just like criticals in TF2.

So the survival pack is not going to be free?

The alarmist's answer: Valve has sold out. More like Valv€, amirite?

The rationalist's answer: Valve has never charged for updates to their games before, why would Left 4 Dead be any different?

The best answer: We don't know yet, unfortunately.

Suggestion for closets: Calculate time spent crouched and proximity to a wall for a player, and gradually ramp up damage dealt by both normal and special zombies the longer the player stays put.

From what I understand, everybody on the team is still in a lottery position to get the Tank, higher score just means you get more "tickets".

Okay well maybe not 99%, just keep your eye on it though... If you are in the finale someone different will most likely get the second tank.

Although, does anyone know if there are server mods that give the tank to the person in last?

I'm sure there is (hate freaking custom servers)

That makes more sense. Although, does anyone know if there are server mods that give the tank to the person in last? You can never tell when strange things occur because of the director, or if some mod is "balancing" the game.

I had heard this too, but it doesn't seem true. I always seem to see tanks going to a player that is not in the lead. My theory is that the tank can go to anyone but having more points increases your chances.

If you're wondering why you don't get it when you're in the lead, that's just because the AI director knows you suck and pities the rest of your team.

If they charge for it on 360, they should make it cheap, like 400 points. Map packs have gotten stupidly expensive, 800 points for 3 maps being the norm now.

I can't wait to play dead air and death toll in versus but honest I was expecting a lot more from them like at least one new campaign, maybe some new weapons, a new boss infected. I dunno. To me this basically feels like they are finally finishing the game (and charging 360 owners for it) and that the real extra content will be coming much, much later (no sooner than late summer if we are lucky knowing Valve.)

This is assuming survival mode is what I think it is going to be: The finales of each campaign with endless horde->tank->horde->tank over and over and no rescue vehicle. Maybe even some escalation (2 tanks, tanks + horde at same time, much longer hordes, etc).

OTOH the SDK finally being released is 10x more exciting. The dawn of the dead mall and resident evil 3 maps are looking excellent and there are several other projects in the works that are also looking good.

I just want new weapons and maybe a new infected to play as.

I don't even give a shit about new levels.

edit: Also, it seems the DLC on PC won't be free. Why would they need to make special mention of an updated retail version that includes the DLC content if the DLC was free?

360 version?

I don't think Valve is dumb enough to charge for something on one of their PC games and cause all their PC fans to hate them forever, but you never know.

and I'm hoping survival mode is some area where you can maybe camp in one little spot, but you have no first aid or pills and face onslaught after onslaught of infected. although I guess if they added in tanks, it'd be rough to limit it to some closed-off arena.

Unless it's under 5 dollars, I won't be paying for it. I feel the game is buggy enough and they're not getting any more of my money until basic issues are addressed.

:'( Well at least they still make awesome games right?

I always suspected TF2 to be some odd anomaly.

Have to wonder what that means for the rest of the classes. Will they really have the will power to finish this project if other games would actually net them money?

A charge for Vs. Dead Air and Death Toll? Fuck that. They should have been released with the game proper.
This is true, if all that's coming with this update is what's been mentioned so far then it better be dirt cheap. Really can't see myself paying more than a 1$ for that.

That's strange - I feel someone from Valve talked about how effective their free TF2 content updates had been at driving additional sales.

Well at least the SDK will bring the content, and their shitty console server browser will find that stuff too...

Left4Dead is an extremely polished HALF game that we all purchased assuming Valve would add onto later for free, like they always have. What in the fuck of fucks...

Ikuu

Had his dog run over by Blizzard's CEO
I won't be paying for it, and I hope any new content is just remade in the SDK.

Thank you.I just don't see them charging for content. It would totally change their what they have been doing for so long.

UP: This seems like a game that would lend itself well to your style of episodic-content delivery. Is that something you have planned for the Xbox 360 and PC versions of Left 4 Dead?

GN:...this packaged-goods phenomenon and entertainment as an ongoing service. TF2 is our product that's furthest along down this path -- we've been doing these updates every four to six weeks...The response has been very strong. Each time we've done it, our multiplayer numbers and our sales have gone up by about 20 percent.

We fully intend to do that with Left 4 Dead as well -- [make] movies about each of the characters and how they came together as a team; what happened with the world when everything became Infected; [and] release new characters, new weapons, new campaigns -- and just view it as an ongoing audience-development content stream.

The information Valve gets from Steam is worth the cost of development.

" . . . like any developer, we want nobody between us and the people who are playing our game. It's pretty self-interested, because when you have the ability to respond directly to what customers are telling you, you sell more copies of your games, and you sell more audiences, and you make more money. So anything that stands between us and them is a bad thing."

edit: they changed the post

Update: Due to a miscommunication, we had updated the original piece saying that PC and Xbox 360 Survival Packs would be paid. However, Valve has since told Edge that it hasn't ruled out the possibility of the price being "$0.00." Sorry for any confusion.

the game has been out for months. HOW fucking hard is it to take a picture of the finished game to post along with your article and not a deathly old picture.

Ill pay valve for new expansions, not vs content. I will also not whore achievements to acquire new weapons, give me xp that i can spend, and have achievements be bonus xp.

What do you think the SDK is?
I know, but I want Valve developed maps with nice new Valve assets/design :(
We won't get nice mass physics setpieces like Dead Air's plane with custom maps
But I can't wait to play the DOTD2004 Mall Map :D

I think the flamethrower would be much more fun to use :p
- One per team so allocate it to one person
- Friendly Fire
- Uses propane tanks for ammo

Also they mentioned specifically how the SDK is going to be free. But not the Survival pack.

I have a feeling people are going to be very disappointed if they expect the Survival pack for free.

If Valve charges for this pack on PC that's pretty fucking lame. It doesn't seem like much content at all, for one, but they've been proclaiming for years now that DLC should be free, and that Left 4 Dead would be getting a ton of post-release support.

Especially with their ongoing support of Team Fortress 2 and the yet-to-be-released Scout pack, charging for this limited Left 4 Dead content seems totally out of whack. Hopefully something got confused while Edge was talking with Lombardi.

At the same time, I would imagine they wouldn't want to mention that they are charging for it on the 360 while it's free on PC.

Wonder if they are just checking to see the reaction from gamers.

I can't even see how they would enforce the new versus campaigns from being used by other people.

Yeah I was wondering about this. It wouldn't be hard to open the maps in Hammer and rename them to Death Air and Dead Toll or whatever and redistribute them that as custom maps.

My guess is that the PC content will be free, and people are getting worried over nothing.
