What exactly is the new "survival" game type, I can't find a description anywhere, but everyone keeps saying how awesome it sounds.

Also, I just got the game for PC, why is it that when I create a friends-only game, I still get random people joining in?

Survival is basically finale events with no end. It includes a ridiculously large number of explosives, tons of normal infected, and the possibility of more than one boomer/smoker/tank at a time. You can earn medals based on how long your team survives.

Great Vs game that we just had, it was very close, even teams and any team could have won in the end but the best team did in the end :D

As long as sources like Merriam-Webster say "de·fence, de·fence·man

chiefly British variant of defense , defenseman", I can use that term, you evil King George type person. Yeah, the game was good aside from lag (or maybe my computer and internet were conspiring against me)...smoker is much better now, and flaming hunters didn't happen very much, so eh...

Sorry we all ganged up on you STOP RUNNING AHEAD SANJAY! SANJAY GET THROUGH THE DOOR! THE ONE IN FRONT OF YOU! THROW ROCKS NAO! :lol

Something odd is afoot. I joined some really laggy server, was Bill for about 30 seconds, got incapacitated, and then the Lamb 2 Slaughter achievement unlocked. How is that even possible? (Retroactive fixing of the achievement bugs??)

Oh, and now my Outbreak achievement is locked again. This is really odd.

Oh my, look what it broke for me. :lol Lamb 2 Slaughter is still busted, too.

Mine's been broken forever; in-game it says I have it, but on my steam page it says I don't. So I gotta 'delete' it then try to get it in a vs. Yeah, I guess What are you Trying to Prove got reset; it says I don't have it on my steam page.

Great update. I still think witch needs a huge buff for VS. She's really only a minor hindrance for experienced teams. In most of my matches, we just slow down as the person with the shotgun cr0wn her and then we move on.

She needs a buff, but if the infected team is any good you will never be able to crown her. Depending on the map sniping/running can be reliable though.

The patch just finally made the achievement report itself properly, so if you already had it in-game you'll likely have it added into your steam profile after a game or two.

:lol That would be so awesome if they actually did change the achievement requirements.

I got outbreak as well. I didn't look if all my achievements were bugged, though.

Also...

- Giving dead survivors to new players is still broken.
- I heard somewhere they actually removed the fire pounce extra damage totally D: Can anybody confirm this?

Anyway, last versus game was great but damn you guys I am sleep deprived :lol I only got to be smoker once and I didn't get to really use the smoke through infected feature :(

Yeah, it looks like I (and a whole lot of other people going by the steam community overview screen) really have L2S now. It really did take away WayTtP? though. :lol

I got L2S after incapping 3 survivors as Tank on Blood Harvest. Really liking the Smoker changes so far but I've had a bad run of laggy servers today.

well, that's it. I need to play a bunch of vs this weekend. TF2 kind of sucks right now anyway until they nerf the new scout bat.

Foliage now fairly reliably blocks survivor los when trying to spawn as infected so boomers can now for example fairly reliably spawn in bushes/trees

e:

Wonder if they'll say anything about stuff that was taken away. It looks like it was mainly the 'Outbreak' one. Really, there is no reason that it took WayTtP? from me, but it's not difficult to get back.

You are really good at finding out particular info syll, have you heard/tested anything on the reduced flaming hunter damage? Someone said they thought flaming hunters do the same amount of damage now.

Wait, are you serious? SRSLY? The damage was even reduced initially, though I think that's been taken away. It's a weapon with a huge recharge time, that disables double jump, and quite likely makes scouts stand still if they want to aim it well...it doesn't do much damage, and it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE for scouts to kill someone they stun with it because they're going to be too far away (or else the person will be unstunned quickly enough to kill the scout). 2-3 point blank double-barreled shotgun blasts don't kill a lot of characters, in my experience, and that's about all you have time for, unless you want to try to use the bat. I'm guessing the bat would take even longer.

Sorry for the off-topic rant, but don't be mad that there's a new tool for fighting ubers or heavy/medics. :p If anything, I'd like it to stun longer so I have a chance to kill people.

I haven't tried it yet and I don't really trust early impressions, but my educated guess is that it still does extra damage but not much

Post results when you find out! Also, I know about the health bonus from pills, but what was that other thing about? Using a medkit then shooting the person? How in the world did that work?

I always heard it was double damage while on fire, then people kept saying triple. All I know is that I incapped folks a lot faster.

If I knew how to set up a single player VS match, I'd just see how much time it took to go from 100HP to incap, but I don't know how to do that.

It appears boomer vomit is buggy. Most of the time it seemed to work fine (ie. old range/radius) but it completely ignored AI Bill at one point while I was standing almost next to him. It only happened once, but I've heard similar complaints.

No clue about the VS score calculation oddities [e: or specifically the shooting part], though we did notice health bonus sometimes being calculated seemingly erratically. Makes a difference when trying to beat our pub stomp high score

^ Blizzard you are so wrong. Scattergun deals 90~100 max dmg per shot, FAN does too-- which means it's not that tough to kill stunned opponents. Hell scouts use it to kill heavies who are being overhealed pretty often.
This isnt a TF2 thread!

It was nice to play again.

Is it true that fire hunters deal no extra damage? Didn't notice it when I played.

Never ended up getting to play with anyone last night after that fiasco with there being no servers available :( I joined a pub super late after everyone was asleep I guess. So it would be cool to get a game in before the Office starts tonight :D Anyone around?

Survival sounds okay, it's a much smaller time investment than campaign at least, but I still prefer killing players over AI. It's a shame there's no Versus Survival, even with only 4 Infected they could just have really fast spawning.

I'm glad to hear the tank multi-swipe is actually working now. There were a few threads full of whining on the steam boards about how the patch might cripple the game but after multiple vs. rounds I don't see that much of a difference. Besides most of the good tactics used on both Vs. maps are becoming quite predictable. New patches just means there will be new ways to work around them.

So, I just got this tonight for the 360. I want to jump online, but it's always so hard to do so in games like this where the online community and rules are so established that anyone new to it is either ignored, kicked off, or picked on. Is there anything I should really know about in terms of playing online? I played the hell out of the demo, so I'm not totally clueless, and I'm playing through the single player campaign right now. Just keep my wits about me and make sure not to shoot the cars with alarms on them?

edit: I should also ask, anyone want to play? My tag is preservative. Shoot me a message or something if you're interested, I'm connecting to LIVE in a few.

Health bonus is your health / 2 per survivor. Medpacks heal 80% of what you're missing, and pills are what, 60 health temporarily? Those were worth 1/4th IIRC.

So Survivor A who is bleeding out and has no medkit is worth 0 health bonus (I believe temp health from revival does not count). Survivor B who has 80 hp and a medkit is worth 48. If survivor B uses his health kit on Survivor A, Survivor A is worth 40 and Survivor B is worth 40. Handing off pills does the same thing (but a lesser effect).

The health bonus was only recalculated after a survivor took damage, hence the part about shooting them.

Firstly, I'd stay away from VS for now, just join Co-op, inform the rest of your team that you're new, and ask if they could keep an eye on you. Try to stay in the middle of your team, the experienced people should take point and guard the rear. Do not wander off looking for supplies, stick with your team at all times. Use pain pills before medikits, try to save your medikit for as late as possible.

Another couple of notes, when your friends are in trouble...

-If you're healing and a teammate is pounced, STOP and help them. The 5 seconds it takes to heal yourself will make your teammate lose insane amounts of blood and on expert, they'll be probably be incapacitated.
-If one teammate is pounced and the other smokered, save the pounced guy first, as the smoker does less damage per second.

Play through the campaings and learn the levels, at least learn No Mercy and Blood Harvest. Learn the layout so that you can run through them with your eyes closed.

Want to hone your skills? Go through the campaigns on expert. After that, you'll be way better than most versus players on 360.

Yeah I know about the pills, but the shooting people after healing them part still doesn't make any sense.

fixed for expert difficulty's damage adjustments.

another couple of tips:
melee is your best friend against all the special infected. Melee hunters off survivors, melee boomers away before you shoot them, melee smoker tongues off the other survivors, melee hordes that are spawned by getting slimed by a boomer.
save molotovs for tanks, and save pipe bombs for crescendo events. if there are tons of either of those in one space, you can use the extras, but generally I try to save them for those situations.
pills are good, but if you're playing on expert, save them if you're in a finale map. because you can use pills instantly, you'll be in better shape most of the time to use pills during a finale while the hordes are attacking, if you have to heal.
keep your health above 40 for tanks, only because they'll easily catch up to you if you're below 40 health. your speed drops off at <40, and greatly drops off at <20 health. this is only a problem against tanks because they're so much tougher to kill than smokers/boomers/hunters and aren't avoidable like 90% of witches are.

Might have to fire it up and try playing tonight. Bunch of great looking changes, though I don't know why it's taken so long for them to be incorporated. It's not like most of them weren't obvious needs.

The Progress and HealthBonus are both running totals you can see during the game, and they are only updated during certain times/events--Progress periodically, and HealthBonus anytime you 1.) gain a medical item by the Use key, or 2.) take damage. Handing someone pills with the secondary attack doesn't cause this to update, and neither does using items (the system takes items you have into account already as if used, therefore there's no reason to recalculate when they get used).

When the door closes it SHOULD recalculate the Progress and HealthBonus and then end the round; instead, it just copies the running totals and uses those. The running totals can be out of date at that point because they only update during certain events so (I assume) not to cause a lot of overhead while you're busy running and gunning. Hence, you shoot a person to force it to update the running total, then close the door.

I don't know if you can do it in the current build, but a similar problem let you finish Versus rounds with all 4 survivors and only having 98%/99% progress.
