Eh, I forgot that STEAM saves the people I played with, another noob moment like when I tried to pick up some player that was next to the Tank.

): Those stats can't be right on my page. I've played way more than 17 games of versus!!

EDIT: Though maybe it's only read the data that's on my laptop. Where 17 actually sounds about right.

My stats appear to be all wrong, though I can believe Pistol being my most used T1 weapon as I use it in survival 99% of the time and you get like 10x more kills in one round of Survival than in VS.

e: well only because it has recorded like 10% of the VS games I've played. I suppose it could be because I often get disconnected and pub stomps end prematurely. Perhaps you've to stay in the game until you return to lobby.

e2: some pub stomper on the official forums says despite knowing he has only lost 3 games, the stats claim he has lost more than won

Wow, awesome stuff! Stats, free weekend, better achievement tracking (showing which maps you've already gained) love it. I still need to play more with GAF though :(

Is it a free weekend or only today? It says I have only 12 or so hours left.

I don't know, though, it's also 40% off. For $23 it's going to be hard NOT to buy this.

I told you guys in the other thread (I think) that if they dropped it to $20 this weekend I'd jump in, so I plan on doing so tonight. Have the game pre-loading now while I'm at work. Everyone please add me, my Steam id is andycapps. I would love to play with some Gaffers on there that don't mind me being a complete noob at L4D. Obviously, I've played a other shooters before so shouldn't be too horrible, I hope. :D

I don't quite get why they couldn't make it at least the whole weekend. I left Steam running all day yesterday so it could pre-load, it looked like it finished, but when I tried running it this morning it started downloading something else starting at 0%.

Between this and the total lack of a demo, I really wonder if they want people to actually pick the game up or not.

I thought the game had been available for preload for a couple of days...and it's a free demo of the entire game, fully online capable...AND they're reducing the full price to $20, half of what they normally charge. Yeah, I would say that they're wanting people to try it.

Well I definitely played more than 11, but I guess it doesn't count crashes/joining in progress.

I'm not sure how you'd properly do a demo that stands alongside the full product, though. What would the demo offer? A full map for co-op and/or versus? The problem with that is the game is based around replayability, so a person could reasonably only play No Mercy and feel contented.

If the demo only offers a portion of the map, like the original pre-launch demo did, how do you manage the servers? Would these people play on the full servers and then be kicked out half way through? Would Valve have to keep a group of servers just for demo players?

And offering only the single player campaign is hardly a good showing of the game and would probably turn people away from the final product.

I think instead of a demo Valve should start offering more free weekends with the game.

Does this game have any decent custom map support? Or heck, did people do anything cool like put CS maps into it?

Not yet officially, but it should come with the SDK in a few [valve time]. There are some pretty fun custom maps already, though: check out http://www.l4dmaps.com/. The Zelda one is pretty interesting, if only for a single play.

making this $23 was brilliant. i played it once for free last night, then just exited and bought it. i love valve for doing stuff like this regularly.

please add me to you friends lists, i'm mattiewheels.

OK. I've got left 4 dead and a computer capable of pushing decent framerates at 1920x1080 full settings with HDMI output. All I need now is 1080p TV, two wiimotes, and 3D glasses. Nerd cycle complete!

Damn you Valve, I went through hoops and shit to save 40% on Left4Dead not more than a week ago and now you put the damn game on sale.
I got mine the thursday before its first weekend deal. :lol I think it was 50% off back then.

Today is the free day, right? Anyone that wants to play can add me (Steam: RocketDarkness), but I might not be at my computer all day, so don't think I'm ignoring you if I don't respond!

To all you new versus players, here, have some tips.

Thing to do while surviving:
*Stick with your team.
*Cover your teammates when they have zombies on them.
*Rescue those that get caught by a special infected(as a group).
*Against the special infected melee first, always.

Thing to not do while surviving:
*Leave an incapped teammate behind.
*Flee from tanks.
*Chase the special infected(specially smokers).

Things to do as infected:
*Attack as a team.
*Protect your smoker/boomer teammates.

Things to not do:
*Spit on people near corners.
*Rush in as tank.
*Wait for a flawless opening.

Well, yeah, I figured a full map or two would be a good situation. They're all fairly short, so just enough to give a taste would be good.

Played through maybe five or so of the levels just now, and truth be told, the game just isn't doing it for me. I find that while yes, I'm blowing through swarms of zombies with three other people, I'm still just kind of bored with the whole experience. I guess once you've seen one swarm of zombies, you've seen them all.

Is there some way to look through servers, though? The two games I was able to join (between the 20 or so that kept giving all sorts errors during loading) had everybody with some fairly nasty pings (over 250 all around), and it was making everything extremely jerky. I ended up having more fun when I was mucking around in single player for five minutes since the animation wasn't all choppy. I tried looking for a server with a low ping, but I couldn't seem to find the right menu.

so I prolly picked the worst day to start playing this game again, had it since launch, and exams just finished, but im getting riddiciously high ping numbers for every match, they either start at 1k and go to 1500 or start at 300 and go to 1100...can anyone help? I even moved my router downstairs so its connected wired and still same shit, tried tf2, 600 ping

Every sentence of this post makes no sense.

There was a long online demo period before the game came out. They don't have a demo now because why waste dedicated servers on a demo when they barely have enough to handle peak times?

They also had a free weekend a few months ago.

If I remember correctly, a good chunk of the online demo period before the release of the game was for people who pre-ordered. Even then, I wasn't exactly overflowing with free time at that point (or most points).

Truth be told, I was mildy curious about the game because I liked HL2 and all the other HL2-related stuff. However, I wasn't curious enough to keep constant tabs on the status of the game in the hopes of catching the one weekend where I can check it out.

As far as "wasting dedicated servers" goes, I'd think that it'd be considered part of marketing the game, which is the whole point of a demo in the first place, right? I've played countless PC demos that had some form of multiplayer enabled, so I don't understand why it's somehow difficult for this game to have one.

Turn off your torrents? Or if you're on a shared connection maybe your school's internet is just overloaded.

I thought that maybe you were in the dorms or something, still. I guess you can't really move a router around in the dorms, though. My mistake.
Guess you're just shit out of luck.

In general I would say new players often rush in without waiting for an appropriate opening. It's a judgment call but waiting a minute or two for a good chance to attack is usually worth it. Spending 3 minutes getting a 15 damage pounce is much more effective than a bunch of 1 damage ones.

I keep getting error messages and can't seem to join anyone. Not sure if they're down for a bit or what. Give me an add though, steam id is andycapps.

Oh btw, played 2 games and bought it. This is why Valve should do more of these. Game is so good, and they got me hooked, but the deal breaker was the price.

There's a lot of places where you can find a place to spawn in 5 seconds and do 5-10 points of damage by pouncing from a low spot into the survivors. Over a bus, fence, etc, somewhere hidden enough and unusual.

The reason why there's no demo is it's easy as hell to import maps to the demo, so you could just import all the retail maps and play the game for free.
