[-]July 16, 2009 - Left 4 Dead Update Released
Left 4 Dead has been updated to include a lobby browser. The lobby browser (under Play Online) will show you a list of optimal games available for you to join. The browser pares down the thousands of lobbies and games currently being played to show you the best list of games available to you. This list includes official and add-on campaigns, including add-on campaigns you have not yet installed, making it a great way to discover them. You can filter by difficulty, official and/or add-on campaigns and by lobbies and/or games in progress. The specific changes include:

Left 4 Dead
The Play on Steam Group Server screen now displays which Steam group it's searching while updating the list
After calling a vote to change difficulty in game it is now correctly updated in matchmaking

Add-on Campaigns
When downloading a new version of an add-on and installing it (by double clicking the .VPK file), it will now correctly overwrite the pervious version, even while Left 4 Dead is currently running
Addressed a crash when two mission files with the same name are installed
Steam Group Servers now will now correctly offer download links when running add-on campaigns

Server
The server will now warn if the public or private tags exceed their limits. Public tags are limited to 63 characters. Private tags used for matchmaking are now limited to 1024 characters. Note that the private tags include the name of each add-on campaign installed on the server, so an excessive number of add-on campaigns can hit this limit

SDK
The VPK tool should be able to handle campaigns larger than 500MB now
You can now drag and drop or pass a VPK file to the vpk.exe tool to have it extract the contents of the add-on to a folder. This mirrors the functionality of passing a folder and having it create a VPK file

Detail.vbsp and lights.rad have been added to the distribution

About time they added stuff like that, assuming it works like it sounds like. If anyone's up for a custom campaign or two feel free to invite me tonight. :)

Checking l4dmaps.com, there only seem to be 4-5 released campaigns. :( Some of the beta ones look good, but they might only have one or two maps done.

This man does his research.
best new campaign is death aboard and is currently screwed up. apparently 2 slighty different versions of 6.1 are available and therefore servers are not matching up with players... lame.

Yeah, it's still glitchy, and it still doesn't download anything automatically, you have to download the map .vpk (but I think it links directly now to that campaign's page, at least). And sometimes you get a string table when joining anyway. We had to restart once or twice and rejoin, but at least we got a dedicated server playing death aboard.

*edit* Sometimes the tanks vanish, sometimes you have to suicide when the medkits don't appear in starting saferooms. And we lost like three times on the ship on advanced so we had to lower it to normal. The ship level is LONG. And then the server froze right as we started the fourth map. ;( We tried to start again, but we kept getting servers that would kick us with string table errors.

*edit again* The finale was by far the best. The horde is thin at times because it's HUGE, and in some places there are only one or two infected ladders so they come from predictable places. We still died at least twice on advanced, and only escaped with 2/4 of us (one bot died, and I died). I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't played it, so I'll just say that the finale is worth it, and it's awesome how you can see all the way back over the huge levels you've just played through on it.

Yea, I agree with Blizzard (Morningbus and I are saddened by your death :(). The finale is huge and awesome. I myself was punched off to a massive fall-damage death thrice, and we killed the most Tanks around the big staircase.

It's going to take a doozy of a campaign to best Death Aboard.

I played on a weird server yesterday with Volcynika. It had some point-buying system (I think everyone started with 20ish points). Survivors got a point for killing some (large?) number of normal zombies, a point for each special zombie they kill, and like four points for healing another survivor with a medkit. Infected got one point for each survivor they pounced/boomed/smoked, and as a smoker or hunter they would get points gradually added if they weren't immediately knocked off.

It was kinda fun, but seemed (like any change that helps survivors) kind of unfairly balanced towards survivors. Of course, I always suck at video games, so maybe that was my problem. :p Survivors could use 10 points to instantly heal (including picking themselves up if they're incapacitated, but don't have a hunter on them I guess), and like 3 points to buy a medkit or molotov. 5 points for pills?

Infected could pick what kind of infected to spawn (I didn't try it, it might let you get something like 3 smokers?), or use like 25 points to spawn a panic event. 35 points spawned a tank, though apparently you don't necessarily get to use it yourself, and you had to be careful to use it when people could spawn or it could be wasted. There was also a limit of one tank at a time, I checked. =(

My only other real complaint was that a 23-damage pounce would give you one point just like a 1-damage pounce, as far as I could tell, so you had to actually pounce where you could stay on survivors to get extra points.

Also, Death Aboard versus is pretty fun (that's what we were playing). The parts inside the slanted boat just suck for everyone, though, since they annoy survivors and they have too many railings for the infected to do much of anything.

so I'm playing mirrors edge for the first time and all I can think about is how awesome it would be if playing a hunter was as smooth as this.

Night Terror was cool despite the bug on level 3. If you lose on it, you have to go back to the lobby and start there again each time. Other than that, it was a fun m ap.

Night Terror isn't bad, played it last night with some people. The first level is actually my least favorite, but it gets better from there. I think in the 3rd level I had the glitch where I spawned in the end safehouse instead of the beginning. To fix that, all you have to do is go idle and then you'll respawn in the correct safehouse in a few seconds.

But yeah, it wasn't bad. I just like having new campaigns to play through, even if they're not up to Valve standards, gives me something else to do. Also, the "Moria" level was pretty awesome with the hunting rifle. :D

Tokubetsu, I chuckled, and I'm not sure why, either.

Does no one on gaf play VS anymore? :/
We used to, but most every time I play, it's just so that the random team can get stomped by several thousand points by the GAF tourney practice team.

That was only three times. And we warned you guys beforehand!

We are doing randoms now. Not like it matters. Teams ALWAYS end up stacked.

Besides we tried to tell you guys what to do. But no one ever listens :/

There's also the time requirement involved and the chance of server crashes 3/4 of the way through a campaign.

We need to play some more customs, fresh stuff would do us some good.

We're not going to beat you just because you guys tell us good tips :p. We'd have to be a lot more practised, for starters.

Haha, that game was uh...PillowKnight, you, Nabs, and Zero. Wasn't that EXACTLY the tournament team? And you picked it beforehand. :lol

And yeah, it takes like 30-45 minutes to get a game started, and then a couple of hours to play one game, which might crash. Mostly I don't play because I don't see friends online though.

Yes, I'm including the time for the lobby to be 6/8 or 7/8, and then spend 10 minutes inviting people, and finally get an 8th, and then someone drops out because they had to go, and then everyone gets in, and then the game starts, and the server has a horrible ping (and requires 2-3 reconnects), and sometimes it crashes halfway through the first map.

To be fair, the last several games I've played we just always use the same server, and I have like 7-11 ms ping on there, so I can't complain too much. Of course, everyone else has higher ping and I still fail at blocking hunters. >_>

I really hope they give us at least one new campaign before L4D2 launches. What would be supremely awesome is if Valve has been working with the guy that made the Dawn of the Dead mall, and have turned that into an official campaign.

Earlier I played with an online friend and some GAF people on death toll, and it was one of the first fairly evenly-matched games I've played in a long time. We used a tank/CEVO server, and I don't think either team ever survived a round. My team almost survived the finale, but we messed up on the second tank. I think we killed them right outside the saferoom though, so it made up for it. In the end it was probably 400-150 or so.

I think I'm going to start playing more. I'd forgotten how fun it was--the no extra medkit runs are a good time.
Plus, my love affair with diablo ii is starting to slow down, so I have time to play now.
