Yes, I'm sure that selling a shit ton more Orange Boxes on PC than both 360 and PS3 combined, as well as making a shit ton more revenue on each PC copy sold than each console copy sold made them go console lead :lol :lol :lol

What happened was I was downloading at my max speed (a whopping 160KB/S) and after an hour it got to like 25% or so and then I went off for lunch, came back about an hour after that and it said it was finished. I thought it was weird, but then it started loading again "Preloading 100%, 5 KB/S" I thought that was rather strange and then I restarted steam and it said it was 0% and started loading at the original full pace.

I was happy to let it load again from scratch but wanted to quickly download something first so when I right clicked and went to preload properties or whatever it said it was about 56% which I imagine is the real download % and when I paused it... it went back to "Pre-load complete; unreleased" but I'm POSITIVE it's not finished downloading and I don't know how to get it to start up again, anyone know how to fix this?

Ingore the %. Steam always seems to misreport the % completion. It'll often report 100% when it's not done, then have to "update" the rest. Also, whenever you restart Steam, it'll say it goes back to 0% but is just misreporting the number, it really just continues where it left off.

It's prolly going to be like BF2, where there are two tiers of servers. Either that or there will be a revolt.

Ya, why would people host their own servers with custom maps, if the people getting into the server are randomly selected? You might never get into your own server to play your custom maps.
 
Once again, you guys are dolts if you think this is the "end" of anything. Valve has talked at length about modding for Left 4 Dead, and I'm sorry, but you're a jaded fucking pessimist if you think they'll suddenly abandon all that.

Matchmaking is good for this kind of game. Anything that can help with the initial learning curve is welcome. Hell, I'd even like to see Team Fortress 2 have the option.

Personal servers should be able to opt-out of the matchmaking system, or at least only be partially utilized for it and also be able to host server list games.

Worst case scenario is that you can download it on the 11th when it goes public.
 
I meant you as in the idiot that was hoping for that to be true. I'm not touching L4D on the consoles and I've already got it on Steam waiting for the pre-load to start. I love co-op experiences and this looks great in that regard so I'm looking forward to this on PC. Heck, I may do some maps for it also.

Even moreso for Left 4 Dead though since everyone has to start the game at the same time, instead of drop-in drop-out gameplay.

Thanks that clears up the % problem.

However I'm still worried it's not finished downloading, I paused it mid-download when it was downloading at full pace and now it says that it's complete? I have a hard time believing that and the "left 4 dead demo" folder in my Steam directory is only 1.7GB. Surely there's a way to get it to recheck if it's finished or to jumpstart it downloading again, anyone had this problem before?

Never pausing a steam download again :(

1.7GB for a demo seems plenty big. What's wrong with that?

I shall never forget Half Life 2 preloading days.
 
I'm guessing the matchmaking stuff will be optional - at least I hope so. Hopefully there's some way I can join my server in-game, otherwise there's no point in hosting one.

yeah, steam loading now is amazing. I've seen up to 6mb. It's average is 500-1mb though, at least at home.

Dude, I live in Brazil, and i'm at my internet speed cap (12mbit).

That's the amazing part.. :D

Steam just keeps giving me reasons to love it more and more.
 
Guys what if I pre-ordered the game now online (gamestop.com) are they going to send me the early access code or is it too late?

Mine is 3 GB in size. Might want to try deleting it and redownloading.

He should just use the "Verify Integrity of Cache" option, if it detects his files don't match the server, it'll fill in the missing parts.

You can't do that on pre-loads until the game is released I believe. I can't anyways.
 
I like that there's matchmaking but there should be an option. Not everyone will want to play that way, and people who rent their own L4D server will want to play on it specifically with their friends.
 
I'm debating at this point if I should. My computer won't be able to run it all that well, and I don't own a 360. Meaning either I'll run it crappily on my computer, buy a new computer for it, or wait for a crappy PS3 port, if Orange Box was any indicator.

Thanks everyone, not exactly how I hoped it'd turn out but should still be all sweet come demo time :)

EDIT: awwww lame wtf is this, I deleted it but it stillllll says preloading complete, restarted steam twice since i deleted. I might really have to wait til they unlock it to be able to sort it out.

really will never pause another steam download again :'(((

Why the hell wouldn't you want a matchmaking system that allows you to easily coordinate with 3 friends to get into a game at the same time? This isn't some drop-in drop-out game to play with random people, and there will obviously be a way to play custom maps and mods just like you do now.
 
I just tried to pre-order on Steam and it said an unexpected error occured, WTF? I've never had this happen before.

Obviously, the codes are shipped out today...but I signed up this morning, and nada....honestly, I'm a little skeptical on how long this glitch was active for.
