The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

It is probably the reason why tanks don't spawn so often. He can be a game ender.
:lol Yeah, I'm guessing. Still, we could have made it. The tank was dead and the other two could have been "rescued".

There needs to be another difficulty level above expert. Maybe even 2.

Epic - 2 hits knocks you down

Apocalyptic - 2 hits knocks you down, zombies take no damage from melee and 1 damage from any non-head shots (still knocked back for both).

I know server operators can tweak settings to make it super hard on the PC version, but i'd still like to see more official difficulty levels.

Tried out the demo, but I just don't like it.

Why did they make this a corridor shooter? The maps are random right? Why not make them more open and give you a spot on your HUD to know which way the safe room is rather than shoving you down a corridor all the time? It's no wonder people get hit by friendly fire constantly online. There's tons of areas loaded with enemies where there's not enough room for everyone to shoot at the infected without hitting each other.

I also hate enemies that charge at you at top speed in FPSes. Why make a game with that as the main enemy type? It's like making an entire Halo game based on the Flood. ugh.

I love co-op games, but I just can't get into this one.

Gonna try out the PC demo now for the hell of it. 40% downloaded.

I need some people on Steam friends list to play this with.. so if some of you would add CostanzaGAF that would be great :)

Just head to the L4D thread on the online forum.

The maps aren't generated randomly, where stuff is placed and enemies are.

Friendly fire is fine, just watch your fire. Being in a corridor just makes things more difficult, use your melee attack properly and you can fight back hordes even in the smallest of places (Hell it's better than being out in the open).

The maps are not random, the A.I Director adds monsters based upon how well you're playing. So if you panic too much, then the Director will not throw too much at you. If you are storming through the game, the Director will throw much more at you to test you and to provide peaks and troughs in the action.

They made it a corridor shooter purely because having a huge open world + Zombies does not give you the same type of fear. Everyone would camp miles away and just pick them off easily. This is always the reason why the maps are so narrow, just to keep you on your toes and also force you to be aware of where your team is. Yes it is annoying to get shot but the game is all about co-op, so all of these things increase the efficient co-op element.

There are plenty of other FPS games where your targets flank you, use tactics etc, so having a game which uses fear and numbers against you is the rare game. It feels like being in the days of Doom, Serious Sam etc.

It is so much better playing with 3 of your friends and trying to survive the Zombie Apocalypse. :D

This is only one story though. I believe the farm level is a bit more open. Plus, if you're still shooting your teammates, you haven't played enough. It's something that takes a little time.

Here's a tip for everyone killing their teammates more than they are killing zombies:

Remember, EVERYONE doesn't have to shoot all the time. This isn't a race about zombie kills, it's about surviving. Sometimes the best thing you can do, is just sit back and let your teammates do their thing. You can watch their asses or carefully pick off zombies that are overpowering them, but don't constantly shoot at every zombie you see. It's wreckless and stupid and you will only piss them off.

It was me, and I could have dealt with the zombies. They were going to spawn right beyond the next train, and I could have saved them. The thing spawned ALL of the other bosses no later than two seconds after I killed the tank. I barely moved when all three hit at the same time. The tank wasn't the hard part, it's the shit after him. ;_;

Edit: Also, if you are constantly getting shot while playing with others, that means you aren't using the crouch button as well as you could, nor are you paying attention to where you are walking/running. I try not to hit teammates, but, sometimes shit happens if any one of us walks in the line of fire. I don't see enough people using the crouch button.

Use CROUCH!
Use CROUCH!
Use CROUCH!
Use CROUCH!
Use CROUCH!

It sounds obvious, but if two teammates are standing in a door shooting, they got that room covered. Just watch their backs.

Been playing the 360 version and the director is a sadistic bastard a witch and a boomer followed by a Tank.

I still don't have the Tank strategy down, particularly if there are other zombies around. I get owned nearly every time.

In my experience, you're pretty much fucked if your group doesn't have a couple molotovs/pipe bombs.

Yep. When I'm playing with my buddies, one of us routinely "covers the rear". And it's not uncommon to have a swarm of infected come from behind, so it's not like you're just sitting there doing nothing.

I didn't really have problems not shooting my teeammates personally (a couple stray bullets aside), but I still feel the maps are far too small for the number of characters in them. It's just poorly designed, as far as I'm concerned.

But I'm not here to crap in the cereal of those who enjoy it, so I'll make my way out of this thread.

Tanks can be tough, especially in close quarters. I don't think this game would be nearly as much fun or as hard without the tanks. They can pretty much end a round single handedly depending on the situation.

Yep i was just telling that to some some kids who i was playing with who thought we were in competitive battles with each other and wasted two pipe bombs for no reason.

As far as I can tell, it changes targets when you line of sight him, and the sewers are *full* of solitary pillars just begging to be used as such.

Also I'm pretty sure witches can be destroyed from any sort of vertical positioning.

Can't you slow tanks down by keeping a constant stream of firepower on it? That's how it worked in the hacked vs. mode, anyway.

I know capndrake has tank killing down to almost a science, but, use the environment. If it's running at you, swing behind a pillar or something. Keep moving at all times if you are up close. If it's about to hit you, swing the medipack, and haul ass. I think the easiest ways to fight it would be right before the last set of stairs at the end, or in the first subway car.

Edit:

No. I thought so too, until one hit me with Ken's flaming shoryuken.

Is there a QuickSave or checkpoint system in the Single Player campaign (PC demo)?

I thought I was having fun, but then I got killed and knocked back to the beginning of a level and lost all desire to continue playing.

The best two stratagies I've come across:

1) The Cheap Way: Run back to the safe room, close the door, and shoot him through the bars
2) The Less Cheap Way: Use the pillars between the subway trains to block the cement throws, and circle around the pillar pile like a merry-go-round, taking turns shooting at him. Also, use a Molatov. Almost a must.

Having the upgraded weapons before you encounter him makes it MUCH easier. 4 Auto-shotties unloading on him will bring him down before you need to reload.

You played 1 and 1/2 of the 20 maps in the full game. I think your judgment is premature. Also there were a lot of open spaces, basements, the mini-gun room etc that had lots of room. Also the subway has a couple paths you can take, you don't have to go straight down the train cars. *shrug* I never felt it was cramped or anything with 4 players.

Yeah i ran up and down the escalators with it in hot pursuit. It finally clipped me but i took it out while i was on the floor and then my chicken shit teammate came and revived me.:lol

First time I fought a tank, I tried hopping over the ledge where those stairs/escalators are that lead up to the subway trains. My thinking was that I could keep distance on him and shoot him a bit before I started running down the stairs. I was quite upset when the tank didn't go for the stairs and just leaped over the ledge and right onto me.

Oh dear god, the servers are down.

So here is what has happened to me so far.

1)Preorder the game, get code
2)Code invalid
3)Return the next day, get another code
4)Second code Invalid
5)Call them to discover they think PC and 360 codes are universal, which means they've been giving me 360 codes. I tell them I'll wait it out.
6)Wake up early, demo is not released.
7)3 hours later, demo is still not released.
8)Demo is released, servers go down for "routine maintenance"

Damn it, I should've been playing 4 days ago.

And...just as I'm making this post the servers come back. All is forgiven, please just download.

Edit: Estimated download time, 6.5 days.

That's not the estimated download time. The 6.5 days is the countdown until the demo ends and the game is released.

How can you get back in the safe room? You have to jump down into that pit.

I remember one time, I saw a boomer and a hunter, and I'm like "hmm...I see those two, where is the Smo-" as soon as I said that, I got lassoed by a smoker's tongue :lol

Yeah, there does. When a group of us can pass 'Expert' on the first try... there needs to be another difficultly level.

Luckily, I'm getting the PC version. :D

Hmm, that explains a lot actually. I'll leave my stupidity unedited though, as a wall of shame. It was misleading, usually a time beside the download progress bar is the estimated download time! Thats my defense and I'm sticking with it.

And yes, the servers were down. For me atleast. Friends could not connect and clicking the download bar surprise surprise refreshes the page.

23%:D

Sure you're playing on expert? I find that hard to believe. Just because you set a matchmaking up to do expert, doesn't mean you'll be placed in an expert server.

Playing co-op with gowans, jonathan and marty. Very hard but fun and intense. Don't think I'd enjoy playing it with NPCs though, co-op is where it's at. It wouldn't be the same reviving or saving an NPC.

Great fun there guys, just wish I had a headset that wasn't ripped apart by a dog. Only when we upped to Advanced did I turn down the game volume enough so I could hear you :lol

Edit: trying to find the soldering iron...
