The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

I absolutely love this game when the AI director really hates you. I couldn't count the amount of times we ran into a tank in the first half of the 2nd level before we had tier 2 weapons. It was flat out brutal, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

This tank was hiding in the dark after the first set of stairs in the subway level. I decided to lure it back to the safehouse thinking I could hide behind the door there. He ended up breaking in and assaulting me in the bathroom. :lol

Looks like there's an update:

  • Added the ability to tie game servers to Steam Community groups. Group administrators can now see the GroupID on the group's administrative page, which can be used as the value for sv_steamgroup. Users that are in that group will then be able to browse directly to them from the main menu
  • Fixed setinfo exploit
  • Fixed a crash when exiting the game
  • Fixed a few cases where the game would crash when using ALT-TAB
  • Fixed a problem that could cause texture corruption on some ATI video cards
  • Fixed a bug that could cause infected horde to disappear

I'm more excited about the achievements and commentary than the game itself. Valve, what have you done to me?!
Woah shit I completely forgot about commentary. I absolutely love that mode in the Half-Life games, Portal, and TF2.

Anyway, Server Groups sounds pretty cool. GAF server admins - get on that!

According to the people looking at those files on the Gmod forums...

...there may be zombie dogs and zombie deer in the game. :lol

Damn. Deer? Thats going to be worse than a tank.

Also what is Crushed steam ID?

Oh and Scarlet, your ID wont work for me for some reason. Added Bulletta but it says you havent been online in 328 days.

After the update it's almost impossible to get into a game, they broke more than they fixed.
let the servers proliferate, then we can have good time. Gotta acknowledge that this is one of Steam's strengths.

Odd. This game in the steam directory has it's files structured like a non-source/non-valve game.

Yeah I noticed this too.

Took me a while to work out where exactly the file was so I could grab my screenshots.

Maybe because this game wasn't originally by Valve, instead by Turtle Rock?

Edit: beated like the Michael Jackson song.

It also doesn't use hl2.exe. It has its own executable!

(I discovered this when the game crashed once and I had to shut it down via task manager. ;_;)

And it also has a significantly different menu structure. It's quite unlike every Valve Source game before it. O:

EDIT: Ooh, Turtle Rock, didn't even think of that.

Can anyone tell me why Turtle Rock clutches onto being the creators of Counter-Strike when they actually didn't do shit?

Just had to add something that's been on my mind while lurking this thread because I've read alot of complaints about nerfing the respawn "exploit", nerfing the melee damage, upping the expert difficulty to make it harder, etc etc.

Now i may be alone in feeling this way, but I think it's perfectly acceptable that the campaign as it is has these few exploits. The best way I can describe it is the Halo 1/2/3 campaign: you die at any moment, all your teammate has to do is run away asap and you'll eventually be allowed to respawn. But nobody makes a big deal about that! Not to even mention that you can backtrack in Halo 3 and have no difficulties whatsoever because there is no AI director giving you challenges relatively nonstop even when backtracking.

Also, lets not forget how powerful melee is in games like Halo. And how you recharge your life fully after a few seconds of not taking damage.

And how any enemy in the game (like Halo 3), even "bosses", can be taken down with one single member of your up-to-4-player co-op campaign party if he's good enough. Every single minute of left 4 dead gameplay is a huge risk if you are on your own. A hunter could pounce on you making you unable to fight back. Same with a smoker. A boomer can attract a horde that may at the very least incapacitate you, sending your team back to a checkpoint if you're the only one not dead/incapacitated. A tank is unkillable by one person's firepower unless you are extremely skilled or lucky. A witch will one hit kill you.

The AI director has no problem it seems with summoning these bosses when you are waiting, such as for someone to respawn in a closet. If you intentionally kill 2 or 3 of your teammates in order to get them health from the respawn, you are taking a risk.

Now all of what I said so far is all about the single player and why I believe it's arguably harder than any other co-op game out there. Just that there's any challenge whatsoever is good enough for a co-op run through all 20 levels in my opinion. Where this game will really shine and silence all cries for nerfs will be, wait for it...VERSUS!

So you can melee a whole horde to death if you try hard enough and back into a corner. In Versus you can bet if the infected team has any brains, they will LOVE you sticking to your corner by yourself...I know I will. Distracted by a horde you feel its beneficial to melee to death? I'll pounce on you and eat you as a hunter, or grab you with my smoker tongue and you're finished, possibly even if someone tries to help you because that horde is still there blocking bullets from killing me! Hell, if my teammates have brains, they'll get their smoker/hunter ass over here and annihilate your friend trying to fight his way through the horde to get to me. Or, after your friend knocks me off you, MY smoker/hunter friend will grab him while he's reviving you.

Don't get me started about the cries for respawn closet nerfing. Please, by all means kill your teammates and wait by the closet. If there's any teamwork on the infected side, you're toast. Hunter pounces one member while smoker eats another. 3 people might even be a cinch for a good infected team. two hunters, one smoker = 3 dead survivors if done right. Go ahead and hide by the closet, we're right around the corner about to eat you because we see you through the wall.

Even tanks are going to disrupt the survivors so much more than you might imagine. It sure is easy to kill a tank when he sits there slaughtering an already incapacitated survivor. BUT WAIT! what if the tank just incaps 2 or 3 team members before dying? Oh and hey that player controlled smoker comes over and grabs the fourth. GG.

ANOTHER thing i've been reading although mainly from the official l4d forums is that the witch is too easy to avoid. Well what about when the bosses have a keyboard and mouse and back you right into one that you didnt know was there? Instagib one survivor. That's the point of the witch I think, it's a director-laid trap for the infected side to play with.

I dunno, I have a lot more I could ramble about but I'll end it with this. Take any game with bosses, and imagine a player controlling that boss. A lot more challenge, a lot harder to kill when he's leading you with the REALLY BIG rocket launcher, huh? Maybe it's just me, but I think the "IMPOSSIBLE" difficulty was simply taken out and renamed "VERSUS". Sounds about right to me.

Thoughts?

What in the fuck did they do with this patch? I can't even play without it acting retarded. I had to alt+tab out of the demo and close it via the task manager. :|

I don't see why people are against the idea of an even harder difficulty. This game is meant to be replayed many times, Why not allow us to test ourselves to the limit by either increasing damage or limiting melee? Leave expert in the game as is, just add one more difficulty level.

This is not a criticism against the game, I love it as it is. Just would like the option to have it.

Interesting point. Although my opinion is that if expert isnt hard enough for someone then they should see how (likely) impossible versus is, I wonder whether valve could even make a harder difficulty? I think they actually mentioned that the only difference between the difficulties was how much damage the infected do, so maybe if the infected did more damage, it would just be way too hard.

Another possibility is that for the sake of realism two swipes of an enraged human killing you would be way too ridiculous, or that the amount of damage done by something like the tank is already at the edge of being actually doable with the current director AI.

Is everyone forgetting that the farther along you get in the campaign the harder the campaign gets, and that we only have the first two levels thus far? Maybe people should see how hard expert is on the final levels of the campaigns before bitching about difficulty levels.

Game is pretty fun...not sure if I want to buy it though. I don't understand why they don't let the demo keep running after the game launches. :(

Question: Does anyone know an option to lock max fps? I'd rather lock mine at 75 or something than let it run wild.

Another question: Is anyone else having total failure finding dedicated servers? Plus, half the time I try to join rooms I just get failed messages.

If I want to run this game on max settings at a solid 60 frames, what's the best value video card that I'd need?

I love the description for the demo on marketplace. Every other demo has the usual game info detailing the number of players, genre, etc. This game just has two lines:

"This game rocks! Buy it!"

Wtf? :lol

i was playinga round with gibing restraints and got it to almost gib a limb in every shotgun shot.

I also increased mob size to 300 on screen at once =( my computer rewarded me a beeping noise and extreme slow down. the fore panic command was pretty fantastic. If only i could alter the amount of buckshot per shot like you could in HL2 and shoot a 1000 pellets in one game breaking shot was fantastic fun. I wish shove could be made more powerful, make me feel like a god and slam/gib and entire horde with a single shove.

:lol oldschoolgamer and I survived to the end on expert, and either won or pillowknight said to shoot the gas thing, so I did and we lost at the very end. :lol

oops, wrong thread

How does buying FRAPS work? Do you get a key that you can reuse if you reformat, or is it some kind of linked account you have to log in to use, or what? It's $9.99 right? What payment options are there?

You get a key you can reuse. You also make an account that you use to validate the program. They use all the normal stuff (credit, debit, paypal, etc.).

:lol Nice HotD2 soundtrack going. I had 4th Survivor from RE2 going on zombie cs and some other stuff like that.

Thanks, oh and part 2 should be up tomorrow. I didnt have the soundtrack playing during the game though, just added it in windows movie maker. Gotta listen for audio cues among other things. That being said, I might look into the RE soundtracks. Need more audio material for retail version recorded runs :D

Does the full version let you record in low resolution? The demo lets you record at full resolution, but 1680x1050 video is enormous in file size.

Yeah you can choose resolution (half-size or full size) or even the framerate. And yeah I left it on fullsize, so some of the videos before editing are like 3-4gigs.
