The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

So what's everyones most hated infected?

Mine is the Smoker. I swear that bastard is the source of all my teams woes in the game.

If by hate you mean dread, it has to be the Tank, especially on higher difficulties. On Advanced or Expert, the dude takes forever to go down, and each of his hits takes off a shitload and can easily knock you off the roof of the level (if there is one) to your death. It's always hilarious when that happens, though. I was laughing my ass off yesterday for like 5 mins straight when a teammate got punched off the roof by a Tank before getting to the choppah. That's the second time I've seen that happen right before the guy gets to the helicopter.

Ignoring the Tank, I'd say Smoker, yeah. Though, in Versus, the success of the Infected team heavily depends on the Boomer, so I'd say they're my most hated in that mode.

I love being the Boomer. Being constantly within earshot of survivors can sometimes make them forget your presence, which gives you an opportunity to stagger in and barf over a few of them before they know what's happening, then stagger back out of sight.

Argh. I can't decide between L4D 360 or PC!

PC of course has mods, future content, and the graphics are better on my PC then my 360

360 my friends will play, nearly everyone has a headset, and I'm more comfortable with a controller

:(

Well the only real answer is BOTH lol. You could play the PC version with a controller though right?

while my default reaction is pc or bust, maybe you should buy the xbox version and trade it in when your friends are sucked into the next big thing, then pick up the pc version which will in all likelyhood continue to grow for the next few years -in terms of both community and content.

have you had much experience with mouse/keyboard? it sure is a grower.

Boomer... nothing like turning the corner to get covered in puke. The hunter sucks too, not because he does that much damage, but because teammates seem to think that blasting him with shotguns while he is on top of you is a good idea, I usually take more FF damage than damage from him.
I'm pretty sure that you're invulnerable to friendly fire when you are either pounced on by a hunter or grabbed by a smoker. In fact, you can break the smoker's grip by meleeing the person being grabbed or shooting them for a while.

Left 4 Dead might be the gateway PC game for one of my co-workers. He hasn't been a PC gamer in over a decade, but his 360 is broken, he just got a new PC built for him by a friend, so I told him to check out L4D on his PC. He said during the demo period that it definitely felt better, but that'd he'd probably still buy the 360 version because of friends. But now it seems none of his friends are going to get it on 360, but one has it on PC. He also says he's thinking of buying The Orange Box on PC. I am a proud co-worker right now.

This... is surprisingly sensible. WTF are you doing on GAF?

Speaking of custom maps, do we know how well the director behaves with custom maps? To you have to give "him" pointers or does he figure out how roller coast every map?

Seems like this is the way to go I guess. I'll be picking up L4D 360 shortly, then in a month or two trading it in to join the PC community. :)

My favorite What the Heck moment was when all but one of us made it to the safe room in the demo. Fourth guy is lagging behind but has a clear shot to the safe room, only about 10 feet from the door...snap...he gets pulled back across the way via a Smoker, causing all of us to run out to his aid and then get rushed by a swarm of zombies.

We made it all back into the room, with near red health bars.

This game has enough random encounters in familiar maps to make each experience exciting. I think the only strategy I have down is in Blood Harvest.
Before you hit the radio to call in the APC rescue, close all the doors and have all four go into the kids room upstairs, where the bear doll is. Three cover the door, one covers the window, only send two downstairs for resupply at a time during the lulls. When the Tanks come, it is whatever works, but going back to that kids room after the Tank encounters has ensure success even for people I don't play with regularly.

Make sure he goes for the Valve pack on Steam. $99 for every Valve game, including L4D. It's an insane deal.

So a couple of things that annoy me and I wish were more common knowledge...

1) Melee attack teammates who have been grabbed by a smoker or the tongue if you can. Otherwise, you can shoot your teammate or the tongue to break the grip. Teammates are invulnerable to friendly fire while being grabbed by a smoker
It is really frustrating to have a teammate standing right next to you trying to shoot a smoker who he can barely hit or just can't see at all while you're getting strangled.

2) Melee attack hunters who have pounced on your teammates, especially if you're still carrying tier 1 weapons.
It really sucks watching your teammate standing a foot or two away trying to shoot a hunter off you with an uzi while your intestines are being ripped out when he could have stopped it seconds ago by melee attacking the hunter. Even if you have tier 2 weapons, a lot of times it's just better to knock the hunter off your teammate to stop him from taking damage. You can move towards your teammate and fire away at the hunter and if he isn't dead by the time you get up close, you can melee attack him off the teammate.

3) As survivors in Versus mode, keep on moving and stick together.
Do NOT sit around for long periods of time or try and explore every single room for items. The infected bosses are constantly spawning and will just wear you down if you don't make any progress. If they are smart players, they will destroy survivors who have separated from the group. It really starts getting on my nerves when the team is totally beaten up and we haven't even gotten through a quarter of the map yet.

Those are just some of the things that have gotten to me lately. I'll try and post more as they come to me.

I told him about that already. But that was before he was going to buy L4D for PC. I shall remind him.

The real answer here is to go to the barn. That level's really easy to beat if you just head to the barn's second floor.

I have to say that some of the achievements are disappointing for this game. It seems like a lot of them are basically begging you to earn them on some low difficulty because they are impossible to get on expert. Yes, that is about the only complaint I have about this game. God, I love this game so much.

I feel like such a bad ass when I'm on a team with M.J. Doja and Pillowknight in Versus mode. Those guys are simply awesome to play with and we pretty much always seem to be on the same page. We felt so bad with how well we were playing together we just had to split up last night to make it competitive.

This is what made us decide to split up for the rest of the night:

Don't forget about me, friend. :(

That was easily the most powerful Versus team I've been a part of. We were hitting on all cylinders.

This shit pisses me off soooooo much dude.

It really sucked trying to take you guys out in the barn last night. It's a little too easy to defend in versus with a normal difficulty setting.

All the map apparently needs is a walk mesh for AI pathfinding and a set of spawns for the Director to choose from for guns and healing items.

Kind of disappointing though. Landmarks like this deserve the attention a lot more than the trash that has defiled my user name for instance.
Don't worry. Left 4 Dead has higher concurrent numbers than Team Fortress 2 ever had, I believe, yet the Orange Box still sold millions on PC alone. Left 4 Dead's preorders also doubled up on Orange Box's.

I don't think there's any doubt that Left 4 Dead will be a fantastic success all around.

Sorry about that, I was just going on about the other two because we've played several games together as a team now and dominated. You're probably the best 4th player we've had play with us though. That was too much fun last night.

That's what I hoped. The possibilities for custom missions are amazing... I need to buy this game :(

Actually it just include 4 copies total, so 1 for yourself, and 3 for gifts, unless they changed it.

It's a good and proper deal actually.
Buy Left 4 Dead - Four Pack

Includes four copies of Left 4 Dead - Send the extra copies to your friends
It's unclear on if you can gift all four or if one of them must be tied to your account.

Good suggestion, everytime I have tried to rally my teammates to there , they scoff and tell me the house is where we need to be. Second best choice, I suppose, until I can get a group to agree with me.

If I buy the physical disc, does it have the same relationship with Steam as the DL'd version? Is it considered a Steam game or a non-steam game. How does Steam handle multiplayer?

If you buy the disc, you can just input the product key in steam.

a friend in the USA has just kindly bought me l4d without any tax charge and gifted it to me. I have paid him with paypal.

He is a good man, and deserves many lovely ladies.

I'm trying to come to terms with the Zombies who give you a boot party instead of trying to rip you apart and eat you. I'm not complaining, it is funny to see some Zombie in a mangy business suit start kicking the crap out of a teammate who is on the ground as opposed to bending over and slashing at him. I've just noticed that there are a great mix of ways to subdue and destroy the player, which are showcased in greater mobs around fallen teammates.

Some of the Zombie movements and antics are great to watch. Shambling around, looking confused and stupid to bloodlust running full bore into a gunshot which takes their head off and they land at your feet, arms akimbo, etc..

goodness... time just disappears when you're playing l4d

Tell me about it. I jumped in a game with Red Scarlet, Costanza, Crooked Rain, and a few others (sorry for forgetting your names) around 2AM and suddenly, it's 3:30 and I need to go to bed.

Are you 100% sure??

I swear last night a smoker grabbed my teammate down the hall and he was directly in my line of fire. I tried shooting at the smoker but missed and hit Louis. It said "puyo killed Louis" and then "puyo killed Smoker."

its possible u broke the grasp before killing the teammate. I have noticed times when i thought I friendly-fired a teammate when trying to free him from a tongue but he took no damage

the first ladder in the no mercy final level is glitchy. i have to try several times to climb up that damn thing. every other ladder is fine.

Weird, just completed no mercy for the first time, didn't get achievement, 2 other people did though *shrug* I did survive.

Fun stuff though :D

Hmmm, just double dipped w/ the 360 version and I've gotta say, that shit is not gimped at all. Honestly, I would not have been at all dissatissfied with it only on 360...at least not until I saw youtubes of awesome custom maps :)

Just finished Death Toll... I didn't survive, I had about 50% health left and a health pack, but I got grabbed by a smoker right as we were running to the ship, and none of my friends came to help me. There WAS a tank in the area, but we could of outrun him! In the credit roll, I was the one who protected the most teammates, helped the most up and healed the most.
Fuckers :(

That can be tricky, though, because the hordes (and Tank) are just as likely to take them down if they try to go back after you, especially if it's the ending section where you have to run to your rescue. I've seen it happen a few times. Depends on the difficulty, I guess.

While that match was aggrivating for being on the side that got completely walloped, it was good for me to try pushing the team to work together. We were totally uncoordinated; no one worked together on one or two apart from others, and attacked random characters instead of concentrating on the lowest HP one, the weakest player, or the strongest player to get them out. When my ping peaks at over 1000, I can't even hit people as a Tank, my punches go through the people. :lol I think Pop on Arrival and I were the only ones on our team that played VS for a little bit, so half our team was unhelpful. I knew we were done when you guys kept going for me to knock me out. :lol

Pillowknight and I were on a team earlier in the day or the day before, and we had an AWESOME vs match with another team; both teams worked very well as infected:

l4d_vs_hospital05_rooftop0010.jpg

What was stupid though was that our team (infected first) "won" according to the other team, so they just killed each other at the start of our turn for the finale (hence what I was saying there).

I know I was in a bitchy, probably annoying mood during the match in your cap, largely due to it being the first total ownage of the team I was on, team never working together, and how tired I was (I didn't sleep from 6pm Tuesday till 5am Thursday). Hopefully I didn't piss you guys off too much, sorry if I did.

Wooo boy. Just played two campaigns (No Mercy, Death Toll) with strangers and it was awesome. So intense. I love it. Cannot wait to play more this weekend.
