The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Love the game so far: got right to the end of Dead Air, fought a pitched battle literally right on the plane ramp, got beaten down, firing wildly, just about to die... and the plane takes off. With me dead.

:lol have you been playing all night? If there's any recent game to make me do it, it's this one. I've had barely any time to truly dig in, but I always get an invite around 3 A.M. and get so tempted. Good thing the weekend's coming up finally.

Nah lol, I took a break for a few hours.

I just finished the chapter where you get rescued by the boat at the end. It was so badass fighting off the zombie mobs in that little cabin then running to the pier as a tank and hunter chased after us. As three of us jumped on the boat, someone hit a gas can and the whole thing errupted in fire. It was just like a big movie ending. One guys got left on the dock and the credits start rolling with a dedication to his memory. LOL.

So much fun!

Heh, you can just rename non-Versus mode campaign files to get play them in Versus. At least initially it seems the only things missing are barriers and climbable walls for the infected. Weird they apparently didn't have time to do that.

haha oh i hope this will be a real campaign
I am ready for a The Thing inspired campaign. :D

Oh yeah, something about last night's Vs match on Blood Harvest (Crooked Rain was there).

We were heading along the huge bridge at the end of I think the 4th map. I was like "YEAH, WE'RE ALMOST THERE GUYS, KEEP GOIN!" Then.........the other team has a tank waiting at the end for us.

Fortunately, most of had auto-shotguns, so we pretty much laid a full force of that on him where he couldn't do anything before he died. Afterwards, my friend was like "GOD I HATE YOU GUYS AND YOUR AUTO SHOTGUNS"

:lol

i was plyin with you all but my internet decided to crap out for the night. :(

At this point I just want to see the HL2 single player imported to L4D. although it might need safe rooms at each loading transition and I doubt that would work.

Although for "true" L4D maps, I would assume that we'd just have to wait for the Source SDK to be updated with the tools for making them. I'm sure it'd be possible.

Yeah they did, but the demo still works online for the people who have it. Like Me, until I get the real game next friday.
Is there any reason the demo was pulled?

This is one game I won't be buying if I can't try it. I'm sure it's great, but my friends need convincing, and I can't do that unless we play some co-op.

To garauntee L4D tomorrow, i'd have to go with the express delivery for a £10 on top of the £20. If i had time to wait it would be great, so thanks for the headsup in any case

Going to have to buy it tomorrow from Blockbuster games.

Tis a shame, i wanted valve to have the full amount of monies via purchase through steam, instead of going to a slimey retailer. Buggering exchange rates D:

Friend brought it over last night, and I really loved the experience we had running through the campaign that we did. I do have two serious hesitations about the game, however.

First is, I must just not like Valve games, because this is the second one I've played from them on consoles (Half Life 2 being the other) and I've thought they both controlled like crap as far as FPS games go. I almost never think "I wish I was playing this on a PC," but with both this and HL2, that's exactly what I thought. Something just feels really off, and your character feels like they've got absolutely no weight to them whatsoever when moving or jumping. (This was confirmed for me when, after playing L4D, I played a bit of Resistance 2, which felt way better to play.) If this is how most Valve games play and feel, I've no clue why people are so fond of them. Seriously, I wish somebody else had made the game engine instead.

The other is, I'm glad there's a selection of scenarios to play through, but with as path-oriented as the one we played was (No Mercy), I can see myself getting bored of replays very quickly. I wish it was far more open in how you end up at your goal, so that we weren't doing the same thing (say, oh I don't know, those god-awful sewers) over and over every time. What I'd really love is, say, a huge open city like a GTAIV or something, and then there's like 20~30 possible objectives and you're given 8~10 of them at random when you play. (So, say, you have to go save survivors, get to a certain locations, etc., but those set locations would change every game.)

I'm just a bit worried it's going to end up like Phantasy Star Online: love the game and the idea, but then I end up running the same stages so many times I get completely sick of them.

Oh, and I guess also, while I appreciate why they've build the game around four specific characters, I'm not sure I agree with the decision.

The longevity of L4D is the question that a lot of people have. I really love this experience just as I love horde mode in G2, and I think that as often as I play games that I'll be having fun with both for a long time. I also think that versus mode in L4D is going to keep people occupied for a while, and that's what really gives the game legs.

Strangely enough, the wallpapers at left4dead.com seem to be badly compressed and poorly edited. I snagged the one with just the logo and it had faded, cut-off text in the background. My solution to this was to just reduce the colour pallet to Red, White and Black and blurred it slightly for anti-aliasing. Oh, and I edited it up to widescreen.

A good version of the original probably exists somewhere, but I don't have it. I think it turned out fairly well, though.

I just want to say versus mode is amazing.

I love the asymmetric balance between the two sides. The survivors have the edge on individual battles, but a good infected team can win if they focus on the overall war.

Hopefully they'll make the other two campaigns playable, as well as all future official content they release.

I guess this isn't really the thread for it, but I'll ask anyway since I bought the headset because of this game.

How do I change the settings so that I only hear talk in the headset? As it is now I can hear myself when I say anything, and I hear the sound effects and etc in the headset too.

My Versus team just dominated, but anyway the highlight of the match was when I as a hunter pushed a survivor off the edge (so he was hanging) and then jumped on the other survivor right next to him. Versus is great fun, but it would be better balanced if it gave both teams the tank at roughly the same location.

If you're talking about 360: hit the guide button while in game and got to "voice" and change the settings there.

As long as modders get a healthy dose of support, this game will last quite some time. It's Single player and Co-OP modes are top notch and hard to find another game to compete with it's quality these days.

That's including Steam sales. At least, if the Steam statistics tracker publicly available is to be trusted.

Well, 35,000 is just the most number of people logged on at the same time playing online. Steam sales make up AT LEAST 25,000 sales (given the number of people online 1 hour after the game came out), and at least 10,000 retail sales.

It's more than likely that the actual sales are more like 100,000+ total on PC at the moment, just that not everyone plays at the same time.

Think about it, if 35,000 people were playing at once at 8pm and that was the peak, but there's 20,000 people playing it at 5am, they likely aren't the same people.

The game isn't even out at retail here in Europe (is it out on Steam for us EU people?) and with the bad exchange rate a large amount of us are going for the retail version instead. With the Orange box steam was only about £1 more than retail. For L4D i am getting it at just over half the steam price (£20 inc tax).

Mine has been shipped finally too. Should have been shipped yesterday but stupid bank declined my card.... yet accepted it today. How odd.

Thought the game was fantastic on advanced. On expert... this game is ****ing fantastic:lol holy crap I must have run the same section on no mercy 10 times and each time was more fun than the last, holy crap. As for it's longevity VS mode is excellent once you get the hang of things, and if it's anything like PSO in terms of length... well that's no problem, I STILL play that game :lol

This might sound weird, but actually muting the microphone control in the Windows Sound Level adjuster works for some people.

That might have been the fastest I've seen a tank go down in Versus mode. :lol

Double click on the speaker in the bottom right corner of your screen, on the Windows taskbar. Look for the Microphone slider, and click mute. This will mute the playback of your own voice in the mic.

As for sound coming through your headsets, that's how it works. The voice always comes from the same channels as the main sound. It's much better this way, IMO, since it lets you hear voice easily, and you can still have wonderful positional audio through your headset. Learn to love headset sound.

I have to say that some of the achievements are disappointing for this game. It seems like a lot of them are basically begging you to earn them on some low difficulty because they are impossible to get on expert. Yes, that is about the only complaint I have about this game. God, I love this game so much.

I feel like such a bad ass when I'm on a team with M.J. Doja and Pillowknight in Versus mode. Those guys are simply awesome to play with and we pretty much always seem to be on the same page. We felt so bad with how well we were playing together we just had to split up last night to make it competitive.

This is what made us decide to split up for the rest of the night:

What's to playtest? No Mercy and Blood Harvest are the same in Versus and Campaign, it's not like they made any balancing changes. If it works for one it should work for the other.
I played No Mercy last night, and I could see that there were new passageways/climbable things for human infected and the finale had remodeled buildings.

Doing all of this would warrant playtesting.

I really expect after everyone has played a couple hours of versus mode things will get better. This game has a high learning curve and nobody knows exactly what they should be doing the first couple times they're playing (unless there are idiot savants at this game, but I'm thinking they've probably just played a couple hours already.)

I've wanted to tell a couple of people, "Fuck you" for their bullshit talk. My God, the game's been out 2 days and not everyone has played 10 hours of versus mode. I've spawned as the tank one time, and that entire time was filled with a person/people yelling into my ear.

Final Flight is an all new Left 4 Dead movie that features an extensive new storyline with a rather unusual setting and a pretty generous portion of old-school sci-fi/horror trash. After numerous fights against the Infected horde, the Survivors are on their way to the Pluribus Space Center, a huge aerospace facility on the very top of a plateau, somewhere in the state of Colorado. Knowing about an intact space shuttle that was previously used to transfer visitors, employees and other passangers to the Pluribus Orbital Station - an experimental, fully self sustained installation with hundreds of jobholders directly above earth - the Survivors set out for their ultimate challange to get aboard. Unfortunately this isn’t the easiest task. The whole facility has been run down by Infected and so the Survivors need to fight their way through the spacious parking area and the Pluribus Space Center itself. Finally they need to reach the very top of the launch pad to get into the space shuttle.

Will the Survivors catch their final flight off this doomed rock? Does anyone of the Survivors know how to operate a space shuttle? And most importantly, why does no one at the Pluribus Orbital Station answer their distress calls?

Just wanted to quote this again because I think the premise sounds fantastic. That Frostbite poster looks fucking awesome as well.

I started getting so used to playing with them that I think I took them for granted. Whenever I'm on a team with other people now, I always miss them. One thing people need to realize in Versus mode is that you need to keep on moving. You can't sit around like you do sometimes in campaign mode or you will just get overwhelmed. It's probably one of the most frustrating things to me right now.

Ya, I must say I can't recall any game that makes me wanna shoot my teammates. It's gotton to the point that in versus that I just leave my team behind if they are just standing around in the never ending loop of getting smacked by the infected team.

Well I tried getting Akimbo Assassin last night, but it didn't give it to me. The stupid computer gave me a bottle of pain pills, which made me switch to it...maybe that screwed it up. Maybe I'll try turning off fastswitch. Also, I think I hit a gas can with my pistols, which may have counted as not using pistols...I don't know.

Also, how long before an achievements map is released for the Genocidest achievement? Or perhaps kills in those maps won't count.

I've never had so much fun being slaughtered and losing just meters away from completing a level.

So true, I died 10 yards away from the level Death Toll where the boat comes to pick you up. I told my other 3 teammates to just leave me behind, damn smoker sucked me back into where we touched the pathway to the boat and then mauled by burning hordes of zombies, it was a total fuckup :(

So what's everyones most hated infected?

Mine is the Smoker. I swear that bastard is the source of all my teams woes in the game.

Paralleling TF2 character vids, I'm love it if Valve released some "ending" cinematics showing what each of the Survivors are doing after the apocalypse. It could be a mix of serious/funny situations. Valve needs to run with these characters, I love them!

Boomer... nothing like turning the corner to get covered in puke. The hunter sucks too, not because he does that much damage, but because teammates seem to think that blasting him with shotguns while he is on top of you is a good idea, I usually take more FF damage than damage from him.
