The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

I guess I'll do it, the only thing on easy that's easy is no heal. Would be nice to go on normal at least.

Do most guys do port forwarding with this game/Valve games? It seems like when I'm Lobby leader it's a lottery as to whether the game locates a server or not. Some people say they never have problems.

ah well. they wont release another demo. and you're not being strong armed... the demo was out for a while.

it's embarrassing to look @ my counter... 27.4 hours so far. sheesh.

I'm at 25 hours. And the the funny thing is, most games can't hold my attention for more than an 1 or so at a time. I've had two L4D sessions that have lasted 7 hours. What?!

After the one that ended last night I had some truly bizarre dreams. In one: The tank music kicks in and I'm entering a huge electronics store. Somebody has the most potent B.O. ever and our group has to make it to the item without passing out.

The newcomer doesn't believe how potent it is and immediately goes down when he nonchalantly breathes. The rest of us are using our LED flashlights to try and find the item (and running out of the area for new breaths when needed.) The flashlights are flickering and somebody makes a comment about how his flashlight is holding a constant 60hz. Dennis Leary pops in and makes some comment about how he's a comedian and a 66 percent success rate sucks (Forget what led to that transition) and I wake up and realize I can't play that many hours before trying to go to sleep.

If you have a router, enable UPNP.

Valve better fucking patch the glitchy achievements ASAP.

I should have gotten Stand Tall, Safety First, Do Not Disturb, Akimbo Assassin and Toll Collector just now when playing with Scarlet, Pop and Mutfox. They got them all and I didn't get a single one.

I just checked and it's enabled. Linksys router with Tomato firmware.

That's what I have, and have no issues... :/
Could be a firewall on your PC?

Remember to "Verify integrity of game cache"
It's in Game's, right click on L4D, then Properties.
Go to the "Local Files" tab, and click on it. :P

Ah damn, I didn't get Mutfox getting it. :(

Mutfox, I, Pop on Arrival, and Costanza decided to give a multi-goal playthrough a whirl. We went for the Safety First (No Friendly Fire through the whole campaign), Do Not Disturb (any Witches), Akimbo whatever (Pistols only-except Mut), and Standing Tall (No Knockdowns). Mut tried for not using any healing, but a Smoker on the first map kind of killed that idea.

It was intense, but our teamwork prevailed! Poor Costanza though, the game didn't give him anything for some reason.

Now maybe people won't give me such a hard time with friendly fire, but I doubt it. :lol

Awesome, awesome, fun time, and great teamwork you guys!

Unfortunately, no 3rd-party firewalls. And I've always disabled the Windows XP firewall.

Maybe it's just a coincidence I've had a couple dud hosts and not an issue on my end.

O_O ZERO INCAPITATIONS?

Jesus, that's awesome teamwork though. I AM AN IDIOT IT IS EASY IT IS RIGHT THERE.

The game was pretty intense. Even on easy, we were still on the edge of our toes. Saw a couple of bullets fly right by my head a couple of times, so we had a lot of close calls for the no friendly fire achievement, but in the end, we prevailed.

Fuck awesome.

Easy is hard when you're going for achievements...
Akimbo on Hard or Expert would be pretty much impossible.

Next run through is on expert though,
wanna get those expert survival achievements :P

Now that I think about it, I screwed us on one; the 'No one hit by a Boomer' one. I got barfed on by a shed and we had to retreat; sorry guys. I really thought we were gonna blow the no FF one when the Tanks showed up, but we kept our cool.

I got barfed on too. :P
We'll try for that one in expert...

The safety first achievement is so incredibly annoying, I was on the roof of no mercy and taken down the first tank and a stupid bot backed into my fire and raged hardcore :( The boomer achievement is pretty crazy hard to get as well :\

The exact same thing happened to me. I didn't get my double pistol and no healing achievements but my friend did. I found out the problem on the Steam forums, turns out that at the very start of the game if you have a slower internet connection and you join the game just after the opening cinematic when everyone is already picking up guns then it doesn't register that you've played through 100% of the campaign at the end. Sucks arse, hope valve fix is pronto!

We figured the AI would heal Mutfox too, so we had to wait for a 4th person. Pop went AFK at the start of the 4th level and the AI picked up a sniper rifle, but Pop came back immediately after and switched back to pistols. We thought he might have been screwed, but it was never fired so he got the Akimbo one. Pop/Costanza/I all went for that, so it balanced things out having 3 people only using pistols the whole campaign.

Oh, that may have been the problem then. When we first started, Costanza had 3000 ping, then it went to normal. We may have gotten stuff picked up before his ping normalized. :(

It really sucks that I lost half my health 20 feet from the level 1 spawn... :(
After that, I didnt lose that much,
but I had to heal to make sure I got the Stand Tall award...

So versus mode fucking rocks, but the scoring system is borked. If you don't finish a level - which is very tough to do regardless of skill after the first chapter - your earned points are essentially meaningless.

I think you should get the majority of your points based on the percentage of the level finished, with a 200-300 point bonus for finishing. Right now, you get 1000+ bonus for finishing and only 100-200 based on your percentage.

I disliked the scoring system at first too, but after playing more I think they got it right. I have seen it several times now, how a single guy runs of to the safe room, while the infected team is busy ripping the other survivors into pieces. The score still sucks since he doesn't get a survivor multiplicator, but he traveled the whole distance.

Also more and more teams are getting to the end of a map. Like in TF2, people will learn the maps and how to handle certain situations on them.

I was waiting for the request to start over after that, but it never came.

:lol I stopped one guy from doing that earlier, on the level with the long bridge/train tracks at the very end. I was a hunter, and he turned around for some reason during the final stretch, which allowed me to spawn at the goal, and I pounced him with no chance for rescue; the rest of the team wasn't even halfway through the map. He wasn't angry at me though; his teammates ripped him a new one when he got caught. :lol Had he not turned around, he might have been able to make it I think.

It seems like you need at least 2 players to make it through the map to get a decent score. One doesn't seem to do much due to the # of survivors multiplier.

hehe, we waited long enough to play... :P
I wonder if starting over right away would fix Costanza's issue...
We should try that next time.

The game list isn't the most up-to-date, but I installed that little app and then had it do port forwarding for Steam and HL2 (those ranges also covered Counter-strike, so here's hoping TF2 and L4D use similiar ports.) We'll see if that's the end of my weird issues with hosting.

It is just coincidence as long as you are searching for a dedicated server and not hosting yourself. At peak times it can be difficult to find a server, sometimes it's instant. It's getting better though, what with all the rented servers appearing.

That makes me feel better. But I'll keep the ports open, unless somebody has a good reason I shouldn't.

I know that the whole point of this game is that its highly replayable but what kind playing time should I expect to get out of this from the first playthrough?

Depends on the difficulty you want to play on.
I'd say, about 10 hours.
Though Custom maps are going to extend that to 100000000 hours.

If you're not total shit at FPS and have some decent teammates to play with the game is easily beatable in 6-7 hours on advanced difficulty.

Okay, thats awesome. I was expecting something like 3-4 hours.

I agree with this assessment. I played 3/4 campaigns last night on advanced, and got through them in barely over 3 hours. No Mercy -- the one I *had* played before -- was the one that took the longest.

Grrrr so annoying.
Retail game arrived this morning.... go to activate and the bloody CD key is already in use! Damn pirate gits.

How quick is Steam support with this stuff?
I don't have a paper receipt but have screencapped the online & email ones from Amazon. Will that be ok?
Don't want to go rummaging through the bin for a torn up scrap of paper that came in the post to be honest.

yeah, that's definitely it. Something like that shouldn't have made it out of QA.

Oh well.

Valve pretty much sucks at achievement coding. We should be happy that they didn't tie unlockables to them here.

Time flies when you are having fun! Sorry about not accepting the game invite last night Eznark, was knee deep in battle at the time!

Didn't finish the No Mercy campaign on advanced, got so close! Last mission did us in, but I have some ideas to finish it! Me, Wasabi, and DM were coordinating pretty well with team work and we would get a 4th straggler to join from time to time! I noticed Warcock joined in for a bit, and told us we got stuck playing on a European dedicated server! :lol Don't know how that happened so I restarted with a local server and things seemed to run smoother. Two and a half hours just flew by so quickly, replaying levels never gets boring. I posted in the online thread, but if anyone else wants to play over steam you can add me. Handle is BiscuitLadle. When you add it my steam name of MrBob will pop up! I want to try and finish the campaign before moving onto versus mode. I see there is a steamchievement for finishing the game on Expert....I don't know how I'm ever going to do that when I am struggling on advanced! So good, will be on again later tonight!

Or easier yet, just go here to add me!

I see you beat it in 1 hour and 17 minutes = 117, its a sign that the flood from Halo will be in the DLC. Believe.

Anyways, 6 more days until I pick up my copy, I'm still playing the demo over xbox live so at least I'm still playing it.

There is no such thing as a "first playthrough" on a multiplayer game. What was your first playthrough time on Counter-Strike or Battlefield 2?

This whole game length thing is completely nonsensical.

Played with three friends last night for about four and a half hours. Had a freaking blast. We played No Mercy on Expert, and then when one of our friends left we decided to kick it down to Advanced so we could at least figure out where we were going. We finished No Mercy and loved every minute of it. Also started Blood Harvest and got to the final chapter, but didn't quite finish before going to bed.

Can't wait to play more. Game is fun as hell.

Just finished Death Toll on normal (yeah, got tired of dying)

But man this game brings out the devil in you.
I played a lot with a guy called launchrokkit or something and we partnered alot, he always had my back and I did my best to cover his.
But as the story unfolds and the boat arrives we notice that another survivor is pinned under a huge group of zombies, and a tank was also in on the bullying.

As a true survivalist I stood safely on the boat and shot my assault rifle dry. Then I remained steadfast on the boat watching my partner run back to help him only to get sucked in by a smoker.
As time went by and my partner lay there incapacitaded and getting smashed by the tank, the zombies started to rush the boat, and what do I do?
I started firing ON MY PARTNER, just to save my own skin :P But hey, it was him or the remaining two of us.

Edit: And no, I didn't kill him, perhaps just take a few hp off to get the tank to finish it faster.

The Tank as a Heavy was brilliant!!

But yeah, Achievements are definitely wonked atm. I got the All 4 Dead achievement yesterday, but after the third time I had done it that day. Whats even wierder, is the third time when I finally got it, a hunter got the 4th incap, victory screen went up and I swiped the hunter off to hit the survivor that was already down, giving me the achievement, yet I did it twice earlier that day without teammate assists. The only reason I can think that may not have given me the trigger in the first two attempts is one game I only had one other person on infected with me, and the second time it was 3 infected vs 3 Survivors + 1 AI.
