The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

So after struggling with getting my custom map into L4D and finally just copying over a working set of entities, I noticed some cool behaviour from the zombies. The automatic navigation tool set those stairs in the screenshots as walking/climbing spaces, so the zombies walk and climb up in short bursts.

It slows the zombies down like hell and is a little imbalanced, but it's kind of unique like this. Should I keep it this way and maybe balance it out by triggering a panic event when the survivors are on the stairs?

Mirror's Edge w/ zombies :D

I thing they spent more time with fearmongering about X360 support than with talking about the AI director....
They didn't even make a good point with anything. I mean this sure is no TF2 or CS, but it is also not a singleplayer game. Also an extra lol at the rocket launcher comment. :lol

I say fix the stairs and include a panic event with bigger stairs. Looks a bit silly on the screens. They are zombies, not idiots!

I wish this game did have a rocket launcher... but using it knocked you on your ass and left you ease zombie bait, not to mention killing all your friends in the blast radius. It might help the slower people learn how the game is meant to be played.

The climbing animations work pretty well, but yeah, might be a little weird to see fast zombies slowed down by mere stairs.

Then again, they wouldn't be nearly as slow if they were swarming from behind, as they would probably jump over steps or run over them.

Graaah, indecision!

Makes me wanna start planning my Campaign......but need sleep..:l
Tell me about it, I should be sleeping, but I'm brainstorming ideas for new wall scribbles instead :lol .

Thanks a lot to all the people that hung through for Dead Air on expert. Think there were about 8 or 9 people that joined in. MVP definitely was Pop on Arrival. I remember starting with Goreomedy and FatalT, then some others, winding up with Pop, Mutfox, and JRPereira, when we won. If you guys need someone for Expert, gimme a hollar if I'm around. Pop stuck with it for about 5 hrs.

This game is amazing once you play with the right group of people. I was playing a hunter on the map No Mercy, and we were on the finale. Someone was manning the minigun and other guy was watching over him. I pounced on the dude on watch duty only to here him cry "dude, get off the fucking gun". His teammate did nothing. :lol

I completely suck at tank, but I managed to fling somebody onto a spotlight. Whenever I get hit by a tank at the end of No Mercy, I always go flying off, but this was much funnier. The guy was hanging there for a good couple of minutes, just spamming chat 'cause he couldn't do anything else. 'Hello. HEELLOOO! Anybody gonna help me up?'

FUCKING AI DIRECTOR!

2HRS ON THE FINALE OF BLOOD HARVEST AND HE DOESN'T SPAWN ANY MOLOTOVS OR FUEL TANKS, FUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOU!

btw i have a theory that the A.I. Director is just every item and zombie in the game put on random spawn timers. Not really "it's out to screw you over" but rather "you have bad luck".

I've never been able to find either there, I think they just never appear. Just be sure to finish level 4 with one of them.

I think my biggest complaint is that he spends a lot of time focusing on the quantifiable elements of the game. How many guns, how many campaigns, how many hours, etc.

That is what people want to know. Why shouldn't he focus on that? I think it is a good review, and a good score. The review does a great job telling the viewer what kind of game it is and why you may/may not like it.

The problem for me at least is that they omit a few things like the Tank. They don't mention that you can use it in Versus or that it serves as a mini-boss during campaign mode (especially on the higher difficulties). They also ignore the humor in the game, the fact that you can use gas canisters or propane tanks to defend yourself from hordes of zombies, and that you'll usually become creative in how you defend from hordes or tanks on different campaigns. Those are my only gripes with the review.

I have the GT review 6.8, myself.

I knew I saw your name on GAF before. Played with (against) ya a week or so ago, and I had an awful team. You had a friend of mine, DogsWithJobs on your team, and you guys wiped the floor clean with us.

Do you have your +attack bound to mousewheel? You were shooting your pistols insanely fast. >_<

playing through on anything but expert just doesn't feel like the same game. You could see all the GT clips were taken on 'normal' mode, and i can imagine if you're reviewing this game to a deadline the desire is to burn through the levels and just kinda enjoy the experience.

while this is all well and good for some, it takes the stellar competitive element from the co-op game (you really feel like you are playing AGAINST the ai in expert co op) and just turns it into a very brief and unrewarding campaign game.

and as for versus...GT states it's overly frustrating and difficult playing as the infected, even though 4/5 the survivors wont make it through the level, and this is on normal.

Nope, i just click really really fast.

I haven't beaten any campaigns on Expert either, just a lot of Advanced. All these lit reviews I have due soon are driving me nuts, I want to be playing more. I also want to get more achievements, but some of them seem so hard. How do you beat a campaign without ANYONE on your team taking damage from a boss infected?!?!

Yes I also think the weapons thing was odd, "the game is just dying for a bazooka"... What???

They're right in that I won't be spending as much time with this game as, say... TF2. Or even nearly as much time as I thought.

But I'm sure I'll get a solid 60 hours. I mean, I'm already at 35 hours of the game/demo. I plan to return to it once I get a new computer.

I got sick of TF2 a while ago... I've played 120 hours, and even with the extra content I don't think I want to play it much more, and I used to love it. I've already played Left 4 Dead for about 80 hours including the demo. In two weeks. Yeah...

Oh My god, best game EVER. We were playing Versus, No Mercy, 2. level. We have got past the demo area, right after the generator. We were in a fairly good state, mostly 70HP. We decided not to take the stairs / basement because it's a great lurking space so we jumped out from the first window. Then the music came up: tank is coming. We thought shit, it will be tight with that many zombies lurking on the street but as soon as we exited the alley, heading towards the safehouse, a miracle happened: the tank took the wrong turn :D It ran straight into the building, leaving us a chance to run away. We succeded, we won without any losses, it took a whole 15 seconds for the tank to even get back to the street :D

Then the next round came the real wonder. We switched sides (still playing on the second map of NM) - I, playing as a smoker climbed to the top of the little toe above the safehouse, then a boomer positioned himself at the base level. They ran out straight, hit the boomer, exploded on all four of them. Two ran away, two left behind. I've got one with my tongue, the other has been captured by the hunter. The other two were fighting the horde, one getting away, one instantly owned by a hunter. The poor guy reached the tunnel area, where he was chased by the horde, by me (smoker), by a hunter and the boomer :D It lasted for about 1:10 minutes, they've got 13 points because of the difficulty rate. It was pure awesomeness!

I seriously love this game, altough the maps are starting to get a little old :\

I am going to guess that no answers means it's impossible for you to mute people on your own team. Boo Valve, though I guess they figured that if you didn't like people you should try to votekick them.

Anyway, I was playing vs. PillowKnight last night, and there was some guy named Falco on my team...poor guy. I didn't play very well, and he was constantly yelling at everyone, like "GO! ARE YOU F***ING DEAF? DON'T STAY BACK THERE! DON'T LEAVE [player] ALONE! BOOMER DON'T DIE I'M THE TANK! YEAH, THAT WORKED REALLY F***ING WELL! ARE YOU BLIND? BLIZZARD DOESN'T F***ING LISTEN!"

I guess my problem is that I was just playing to relax and have fun. I don't really get how people get so worked up or scared about a game. :lol I'll try to learn to play a bit better though, hopefully. I don't know whether it's best to try to kill one guy as a tank or take everyone down. My impression was that if you could just make sure one guy dies (or two), your team has a huge advantage. The problem is that it's usually quite hard to get other teammates nearby when you're a tank to finish off people who are knocked down.

If possible you should incapacitate everyone. The rest of the infected can then finish them off, that's what he meant with "BOOMER DON'T DIE I'M THE TANK!". Just barf on incapacitated survivors for quick and easy kills.

Oh, I'm aware. I was hiding underneath all four survivors (so I thought) trying to let the tank get close enough while I was the boomer. I was either shot through the floor or through some strange angle through a side window, though. I never saw who shot me.

And when there's a tank, it typically seems like everyone else is spawning or dead or far away, so the survivors just help back up anyone who gets incapacitated, while killing the tank, before help can arrive.

Well, I'm completely ignoring the score, here, heh. I just wish the review had spent more time focusing on how well/poorly the A.I. Director contributes to the replayability of the game, rather than how many units of Gamosity the game has.

As a tank your first and foremost objective should be incapacitating everyone you can. Killing them takes a long time and you take too much damage. Just use the alternative attack, picking up debris and throwing it on top of the survivors. That should do the trick.

I got spawned in Blood Harvest once and just threw trees at everyone. They were all down in short order and I got the Dead 4 All achievement.

the problem with teh gametrailers review: you can clearly see he was playing on normal. crank it to expert and learn what real tactics and teamwork is. and dumb, blind luck.
