The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

Anyone experiencing major lag and timing out on the servers lately? I tried playing No Mercy with my friends and we timed out before we even got the to the car with the alarm literally five times in a row.

Yep, last night we had two games interrupted by full-group time outs. Ah well.

...so why do we have 3 different L4D threads again? And why is this the only online gaming thread not vanquised to the god-forsaken Online section?

Why does it matter to you so much?
Live and let Live, sir.

There are over 8800 posts in this thread and now you ask. And from your earlier posts in here, you're a tool. So, no one should really care what you think! :D

Had my first ever taste of L4D tonight and what an INTENSE experience!!

Near the end of the night, I was yelling "BOOMER!" and so into it. What a great game!!

Is the "Versus" mode fun?

Holy shit at this game!! I just installed and hopped onto an online steam game. Soo many holy shit moments --it's unbelievable. The four of us did the first movie (hospital, sewers, and whatnot). Man I can't get over that experience. Such an amazing experience even with strangers. We all were communicating and helping eachother out when need be. Day-um.

Just picked up L4D today and it is AWESOME. Best multiplayer experience I've had. The Versus is intense and the co-op is awesome as well.

I love the Achievements. There really are no "complete this and get 50g" although there is that all Survival achievement.

Flamethrowers are going to be a pain when it comes to friendly fire. People have enough problems timing their molotovs as it is already. I can't imagine what it'll be like with pub players.

Are there actually people who can reach the expert finales without dying once throughout the four stages before the finale? Is that even possible?

I think that's the first time I have so far. Typically, the farthest I'll get to is lv2 or 3 before dying the first time.

I've only worked through the campaigns on Expert once so far (with the same group of people), but I survived the whole way to the finale of Dead Air, which was the fourth and final one we did. Honestly, 95% of my pre-finale deaths on Expert were at the hands of a Tank or Witch; everything else is a health-eating nuisance, but unlikely to kill you. Once we'd got into the rhythm of Expert we could usually get through the first four levels in about 45 minutes to an hour, and then the finale took a while depending on how long it took us to hit on a good strategy (Dead Air was by far the fastest, and we completed the whole campaign in 1 hr 31 min first time).

So how did you guys do it? How do you move through the levels? What sort of weapon loadouts do you guys usually use?

Typically, with my group of friends, I'm always running point with a shotgun. I'd crouch down so the three behind me can help with the zombies in front. The rest are usually on the SMG and then the M16 when it's available. I take a shitload of damage and get vomited on a lot. Maybe we just don't work well as a team yet but what kind of team strategies are there for surviving Expert? Any tips?

Expert isn't that big of a deal, you just can't get surrounded. In Normal, you can have 30 zombies around you hacking away and you'll probably be fine. In Expert, you're dead in 5 hits. Just always back into a corner when shit goes down, and help your teammates, and don't shoot them, and it's just like anything else. The Tank is probably the hardest, but the molotov + run strategy works.

Really though, I've never beaten Expert. I play with one friend and we've done Expert runs with two computer controlled players, and they always fuck everything up. They're great for killing special Infected fast, but then an event comes where you want to set a certain area on fire, and they either stand there and prevent you from doing it, or they run across the map for no reason, or they set themselves on fire trying to get some pills. Just horrible shit. The furthest we got was the Hospital on No Mercy. I have joined Expert games with randoms and have gotten pretty deep into some movies, but the team eventually falls apart or we reach a point where everyone keeps dying.

Get to the second floor of the barn, and just turtle by the pile of ammo with four auto shotties. Once the tank arrives, just scatter and shoot the crap out of him while he chases someone. The actual finale of Blood harvest is the easiest out of the 4, even without using exploits so you shouldn't have that much of a problem.

Joke post? :lol In Dead Air, you can glitch on top of the plane, in No Mercy you can use the Jesus Room, in Death Toll, you can use the Rock exploit. Those are all infinitely easier than Blood Harvest's Finale.

We tried so many strategies tonight on Blood Harvest Expert for the finale. The Tank is such cheap SHIT.

Hell, we even got a Tank everytime we left the safehouse at the beginning. :lol

We made it all the way to ch5 of Blood Harvest on Expert then decided to bail after hours of attempts on the Finale. :(

I think usually I grabbed an autoshotgun (sometimes a hunting rifle on the more open levels just for kicks, but try not to have more than one person with one). We didn't really coordinate what people had except at finales, but usually there would be two autoshotguns (one roughly at front and one roughly at rear, watching our backs) and two assault rifles firing over us. I'd say having people crouch is standard and barely worth mentioning, as everyone I play with does it instinctively when it's needed.

One thing to learn is how to deal with hordes/boomer vomit, which is getting your back to a wall (preferably a corner) and meleeing (and meleeing, and meleeing, don't stop, keep meleeing, just hold down the left trigger/right mouse button). If you have an autoshotgun, you need to learn how to reload it properly: never let it reach 0 or reloading becomes slower (try it out of combat and see why), but instead tap reload between melees and let the ammo counter rise before unloading a few shots (not the whole clip) and then repeating. Provided there's nothing behind you, you shouldn't take a scratch with this method. Unblinded teammates can help out if you get mobbed, especially if they have an assault rifle. Oh, and if you're blind and a teammate screams that they're pinned, look for their name through the vomit and unload just above it.

Really, melee is this game's ultimate weapon (at least on 360, where there isn't any melee fatigue... yet?). See a hunter crouched in front of you? Start to melee (there's nothing funnier in the world than meleeing a staggered hunter to death, especially in Versus). Can't see the smoker that's got your friend? Melee them (or shoot the tongue, which some people don't seem to realise works). Tank's got a buddy downed? Melee him a few times in the back to get his attention. Crouched in a doorway? Melee, and let your friends do the shooting.

And friendly fire on Expert is a bitch. If your teammates are capable people it's usually better to call something out to them rather than trying to shoot it for them. That is, if a horde is rushing their back, just politely say so, rather than shooting through them to hit the zombies. If they know their business they'll get busy meleeing, and you can then reposition for helpful, clean shots.

Finales are a whole other post.

Somebody whined about this weeks ago and I'm pretty sure it was him. Too lazy to search and verify that it was actually him, though.

That person was ignored at the time and I didn't quote him and ask why the Halo 3 thread (a gazillion pages) was still in gaming when only online play was being discussed, but I was tempted. Figured it was best to ignore and let the issue die.

not counting glitches. and specially in versus, once a team gets to the barn, the infected can't do anything. Hell, they can even just stay by the radio and horde ammo while blasting the zombies away and sitting on 4 medkits.

Anyone want to make a headset recommendation for me? I'd like something comfortable with a good microphone, preferably not overly expensive. Durability is a plus, too. I don't know much about headsets, so I don't have much to go off of.

You know what affects my experience? When I haven't been able to play the game for 2 weeks because no one's on or your parties are full and/or you never respond to my messages. :(

Had a blast playing this last night with GAF the MOB. That said, don't play versus against that guys. He's impossible to pin with a hunter. :lol

I say just get a logitech "PS2/PS3" Usb headset. I've been using my old PS2 headset for awhile, and it works just fine. Though you still hear others voices through your own speakers...not sure if there are any PC headsets that allow you to hear voices through the headset speaker and game audio through your own.

Either that or I just dont know how to fix it.

You know what makes my experience?

Us killing a Tank in No Mercy 5, then Tekno (new to the game) throws a molotov AFTER it died, which then burned Scarlet to death. Scarlet then going "Grab my molotov and health kit, since I WON'T BE NEEDING IT."

:lol

I got incapped trying to get Scarlet up before she was burned alive :lol

the majority of usb headsets with built in sound chips allow this. you just need to use vent.

The best part was that the Tank got stuck going through the vent in the elevator shaft by the big ladder, and I blew it away from the back where it died, so I walked into/through him and through the vent while making Bill laugh, THEN I'M ON FIRE. :lol

Shake said pretty much what I would; I really don't know or go with what other people pick up; I tend to grab an auto shotgun on Expert and be in the lead in case a Witch is in the way and to battle Tanks. If you get barfed on, get to a wall and hope the other players come to your aid to reduce the damage from the swarm on you. When a swarm comes or someone gets barfed on and I don't, I jump into the barf victim to help out; it is a pretty useful way to help reduce damage done to someone, which if more people did, the teams would survive a lot more probably.

More people should do this. There's a pretty good chance you won't get shot by the blinded person, so it makes complete sense to run over and help knock some zombies away.

So I'm getting the feeling that USB is the way to go, in regards to headset. I'll check that out.

I was playing for the first time with three good real-life friends online last night. It was a total blast. I actually had to be the leader for once, hahah. It was tricky, but we eventually made it through Blood Harvest's finale on Advanced. I even sucked it up and managed to cr0wn a witch for the first time, and on my first try, too.

Oh, and Scarlet, I finally poked around and read up on how to use the autoexec.cfg. Mine only has one line though, eheh.

The problem is we're all 4 trying to get the achievement at the same time so we have to get through the finale without any one of us dying. The hordes are no problem, a group can easily get through those without using any exploits. The tanks though are a different story, surviving 2 tank attacks without losing a single member is a bitch and a half.

Not sure why people are saying it's hard to defeat the tanks on Expert Death Toll or Blood Harvest. It is if you actually try to shoot the stupid things. On both those finales, it's a cake walk to just set a tank on fire and gun it around the house or complex until it burns to death. The Tank AI lethal at close range, but completely stupid long range. The only campaign where it's difficult for this strategy is probably No Mercy's rooftop.

The biggest thing with expert is that people forget that the regular zombies are an actual threat now. Hordes WILL fuck you over completely. Everything is a threat and should be treated as such. You can't just save your A game for tanks etc. You have to be alert and aware the entire time.

I played a little co-op a couple days ago for the first time in ages and, yeah, you get so used to playing certain ways in Versus and it's a completely different game.

Was playing for all of five minutes when somebody was incapped and I started helping him up. A stray zombie started hitting me about 80 percent of the way through, and by the time I remembered this ain't your Versus zombie, I was incapped too.
