The Official Mercenaries 2: World in Flames Thread

Speaking of holy shit moments.

Was doing one mission, shot a jeep with an RPG, sending it flying through the air into a bunch of barrels. One was a red one (sploding variety) which promptly lit up right next to a couple of fuel storage tanks. I started to run like a motherfucker at that point, which was a good thing, because a couple of seconds later the fuel sent half the base into the stratosphere.

Daaaaaaaaamn fine moment. :D

Is it just me of does the sound & video of the cutscenes in the game seem pretty poor?

Other than that, I think the game looks pretty awesome considering the scale of it all

How could you think that neither version of the game had voice chat? It is mandatory on 360 multiplayer games, and even if the game didn't have it, you could still use the system's built in, game independent, chat.

On the PS3, on the other hand, I'd just assume the other players didn't have mics since that seems to be far more common on that system.
??? I didn't think one version had it and not the other. I thought NEITHER version had it. wouldn't know the 360 version required it.

Anyone else having co-op issues. I play co-op with my brother all the time in many different games without a problem but for some reason if there is any loading or I get more than 10 steps away from him I get dropped. Is this normal for Mercs 2?

I know, which is why I asked how you thought that NEITHER version had it. I guess I assumed it was common knowledge that MS had a chat system that crossed all games, not to mention one that works independently of the games as well. With all the hardcore game players on GAF, I just sort of figured that was common knowledge at this point.

Not at all typical. Perhaps their is a problem with one of your Internet connections or EA's Servers.

I don't think so. I haven't had any lag or dropping issues so far and I haven't heard on anyone else having them.

Yeah the voice channel when in 5.1 (at least for me) the volume is too low. I crank up the sound to hear it and forget to turn the volume back down and the first BOOM from and explosion and my fucking house sounds like it's gonna explode.
I wish I had access to the PS3 version to hear if it is improved, I've always thought the PS3 handled multichannel audio better.

There's an HVT recovery mission where it's like 6 fuel tanks surrounding a rocket house and cars, trucks, barrels (including explosive) scattered in the center and a cliff in the back. Meaning if you get spotted and someone activates the alarm, this activate the rocket house and there's a good chace that either you'll die or the HVT will get take out "accidentally".

I killed everyone near the front with my sniper rifle, picking them off before they had a chance to activate the alarm. Then headed to take out some guys hiding on a hill just in case they get off a lucky shot/grenade and set off the explosives. Finishing that, I lure the HVT away from the fuel tanks, subdue him and call in the chopper pickup. Apparently I missed a guy, because as soon as I do that someone sets off the alarm (activating the rocket house :/) and the chopper gets hit by like 2 rockets before he touches down. Needless to say, he bails out and I now have to try to keep myself and the HVT alive for an extraction.

So I drag him to safety and spot someone running around the corner of a house. I regroup, forming a plan to C4 the house, and sneak around the fuel tanks because that's pretty much the only way to get back there safely. Afterall, no one's gonna actually shoot them right? Wrong. Someone in the house fires a rocket just feet from my legs, setting the fuel tank I was near ablaze... Fuuuuuuck. The chain reaction blows up the entire base. All six fuel tanks, all the vehicles, the rocket house, the alarm tower, the barrels... everything. Luckily Jen's faster than the other two Mercs, because I'm running for my life and she still has to stop every few seconds to shield he eyes everytime anoth fuel tank blows.

I barely make it out alive, my entire screen is blood red and my life is in the single digits. The HVT also miraculously survives. Seemingly, only because I was carrying him towards the first extraaction point. If I had left him where I subdued him, he would've died for sure as I find burning reckage all over the area. But at least it's now safe to call in the chopper extraction. :lol

None at all with me and my co-op partner.. and I'm in NY, while he's down in FL. Perhaps it was just EA's servers being screwy?

Don't. I played the ps2 version, got rid of it again.

You can't kill civilians in the ps2 version. If you shoot them, they bleed a sand-colored liquid and you lose cash. But you can't hurt them, not even with grenades.

There aren't enough ":lol"s on the internet to properly reply to that.

Seriously? Wow.

Just curious if anyone knows the voice actor that plays Ewan (helicopter pilot)? I know I've heard that same voice in other games.

Are me and you on the way to the tag team championship of defending Mercs 2? Sure seems like it. Same with Too Human, and I'll probably be doing the same with NHL2k9 in the next 2 weeks.

Out of all the sandbox games on the system, this one is easily the one with the most toys, the most random stuff going on, and the most dynamic and fun experience right now. It doesn't look the best (GTA4 does), but it is sure serviceable at what it does with the destruction. People need to invest about 8 hours into this game before they write it off.. .At least get to the 'castle crashing' mission before you make judgement.

I will stand by the fact that if a game has the insane funfactor, I will defend it... unless it has some potentially game killing bugs that pop up more then a man overdosing on viagra. I did this with Too Human and I agree with you guys on Mercs 2.

This game is so much freaking fun. I could care less if the story isn't the most in depth. If there is some random glitches that appear, shit, it happens. I think alot of people now adays forget to play games for enjoyment. We've all become our own personal reviewers that critique every aspect of the game. Thats good and all but really... at the end of the day its all about how much fun and enjoyment the game provided you because thats what games are all about.

Anyways enough on that.

One thing that had me cracking up is myself and a buddy of mine, and I think I mentioned this in a earlier post, was trying to get a guy on a oil rig. Well unfortunatly I called in a air strike on the oil rig while we were still on it and well, lets just say... that ended badly, yet it was so bad ass we couldn't help but laugh and we didn't care we had to retry the mission. We just had an insane ammount of fun.

I know most people won't remember the game but I could swear he also voiced the undead gate keeper (weird skeleton snake with a top hat) in Shadowman.

Restared my game last night as I now feel I have a better handle on everything as far as game mechanics
...and yeah I feel better as I've gotten used to the gun handling so looks like I won't be picking up the PC version

Gunplay is alot more fun if you approach with the Crackdown mindset of zoom in/lock-on to each target with L1/LT

Still hate L3 being sprint and still NEVER use it =/

Mission structure is sooooo fluid and relaxed that I could never see myself going back to Mercs1 'cept for nostalgia factor

You realize that you just have to click sprint once to activate it, right? (Just like COD4). You don't have to hold it down.

yeah I know you click it...I just hate the use of L3 in general for functions like sprinting

It feels like I'm going to break the fucking controller everytime I click it in! ....hate that feeling

The more I play this game, the more I love it.

There are issues with it that I only forgive in sandbox games, thankfully nothing game breaking. Except for maybe the repeating voice clips. That's starting to really drive me nuts.

Otherwise, it's just plain fun. There's something to see or do or find around every corner. Every minute of simple exploration is a minute where something totally awesome might randomly happen. Just the way a sandbox game should be.

People have been "clicking" since 2001. How are you still not used to this yet? Where have you been?

I'm fine with clicking when the stick is stationary for something like zooming in, crouching, etc...
But I hate it when your having to move it foward as well as click or hold it in....just the way my thumb sits on the stick when I try to do this, it never quite feels right....

Sprint should have been L2

Also is it just me or have some of these glitches just made you laugh? Granted if any of these weird things happened during actually missions and caused me to fail I might be pretty pissed.

One simple example that had me laughing was when me and friend were hoping into a jeep and for some reason the minute I hit the button to get in the front end of the jeep went almost straight up and then fell back to the ground. We both sorta just said huh and laughed.

I was doing a mission for U.P. the one where
you have to take the employee around to secure documents. I get to the point where you have to go up to the front of the ship and jump on the stationary gun.
Of course I grab the grenade launcher and start laying waste to the ensuing horde. An APC pulls up so I decide to send a gift to them. It gets engulfed in flames and just as it is ready to explode one of their faction members pulls right next to it. The APC explodes on cue and the jeep driver/astronaut gets launched straight at me, knocking me and the gun off the back of the ship. I had to restart the mission, but laughed my ass off.

I really wish walking/running didn't unequip smoke grenades and beacons. It makes it a pain to call in air strikes at times.

QFT, it makes using them in hectic situations a pain in the ass.

OH yeah, that's a very very fun missions. :) Had tons of fun "sniping" the troop transports from afar with that recoilless rifle. Jesus. :)

Yeah I have to agree as well. Its really annoying trying to call in a air strike when you got a hail of bullets and rpgs riding up your ass...

I don't understand too when you're riding in a car/jeep with a coop passenger that the passenger can't shoot, or better yet drop smoke markers and tags for airstrikes.. that would be awesome imo.

Well, EA is notorious for having wonky servers, so that could be it, but it's also possible that one of your ISP's was having issues too. Happens all the time, and the next time you play, everything may be fine.

I was surprised I made it through that mission on the first try.
After the executive finished shredding at the last location, I got down off the roof, only to find my self and the executive completely surrounded, with no help. Luckily, the AI was only shooting at me and I somehow survived.

What's the "Metal" one?

The only one's I've seen is the suit (brown, if I recall) where his mohawk's combed to the side, a biker outfit w/ leather jacket (not the pre-order one) and a chicken suit ala Saints Row.

On a side note, Chris has a bad-ass one where he's wearing urban clothing, sunglasses and he has hair. :O

the metal one is what they call the unlockable

Awesome to hear about the other ones, thanks!

Yep. Its one of the changes from the original that just makes things more difficult.

I also miss the ability to get out of a vehicle without forcing all the AIs to exit as well. In the original game I'd sometimes load up a jeep full of guys, drive it to a nice flanking position and hit the left-trigger (i think) to get out of the jeep while leaving the AI guys inside to cover that area with the 50 cal.

Can't do that anymore it seems.

I am glad to have finally found the button to enable multiple C4 placements. Its left on the D-pad in case anybody else was curious.

so after spending 2 hours with it this morning i'm a bit disappointed after loving the first one and i think most of it has to do with the presentation of the game.

-While the driving controls are decent, driving a tank can be horrid

-The missions so far are alot of fun (the devestator :lol ) and i enjoy the quick progession of the game

-co-op play seems to be alot of fun as long as your playing with someone who has a mic

-Honestly the textures and lighting make you want to puke (360 version and especially in cut scenes) and the world doesnt seem full of life, bottom line the fact this was also coming on the ps2 had me worried and my fears of sub-par graphics were justified (game is alot of fun from a gameplay only standpoint, everything else is sub-par and unpolished)

I think people really have poor memories. Mercs 2 is not a bad looking game by any means. Anyone who thought it was only a slight upgrade over the original needs to go back and take a look at the first game. It looks vastly superior.

I mean, look at the original...

So what's the word on multiplatform comparisons? The videos I've seen of both versions seem to suggest that they are pretty much on par with one another. How does the framerate hold up overall?

Exploding things has never been so fun until Mercs 2 showed up. Planting 4 or so C4 charges onto a fuel tank and flying it into a refinery full of fuel tanks and then pressing the button.

SQUEEEEE!

And now I'll never say 'squee' again.

That same mission, I was at the part where you have a tower behind one of the warehouses. When I got to the top there are some anti-air missles they drop for you to take out enemy helicopters. Well, the place is swarming by that point, and I'm trying to figure out what to do because it is my first playthrough of the mission, but I'm just about to try and grab another anti air when everything goes to shit.

I don't know if it is scripted or not, but the bastards blew up the entire tower. Everything went red, the floor went out from under me and i'm falling with big pieces of metal toward the ground. I'm guessing the warehouse went up to, because suddenly i'm on the ground barely alive with the employee guy cowering next to me. When I realize what happen we haul ass, trying to dodge helicopter fire until I find a vehicle. So awesome.
