That same mission, I was at the part where you have a tower behind one of the warehouses. When I got to the top there are some anti-air missles they drop for you to take out enemy helicopters. Well, the place is swarming by that point, and I'm trying to figure out what to do because it is my first playthrough of the mission, but I'm just about to try and grab another anti air when everything goes to shit.

I don't know if it is scripted or not, but the bastards blew up the entire tower. Everything went red, the floor went out from under me and i'm falling with big pieces of metal toward the ground. I'm guessing the warehouse went up to, because suddenly i'm on the ground barely alive with the employee guy cowering next to me. When I realize what happen we haul ass, trying to dodge helicopter fire until I find a vehicle. So awesome.

Not scripted; my playthrough left the tower intact, but there were dozens of guns aimed at me.

You guys are right, the game definitely gets more fun the longer you stick with it. Most of my criticisms still stand, but you just get used to them and ignore 'em in a wild-eyed lust to blow more things up.

The game does have some very curious logic. Such as, you can't shatter or break a single pane of glass in the entire game world (they get that cheap bullet hole effect instead) but you can level 5 story buildings with a few RPGs. Or when calling in air strikes, sometimes every building around gets leveled except the one I threw the smoke target at.

Also, as mentioned several times in this thread, the game doesn't explain much. I played Mercs 1 to completion yet still feel like half a noob here.

I'm worried about the play length. Has anyone completed the game? I've played maybe 3 hours, finished about 5 missions and the meter says I'm 21% complete. I hope that meter is weighted where unlocking new factions would cause my meter to jump a lot higher than just completing a mission would.

It's definitely not scripted. I was able to take out the helicopters just fine, but one of my shots went a little astray and I ended up with a little more vacant real estate than there was originally. I'm definitely enjoying the randomness of the game.

I haven't investigated much yet but I wanted to open up another faction on the first island but am only friends with UP, the faction I want to try missions for are "hostile" to me, likely from me doing UP missions.
How do I fix it so they won't shoot me on sight? Start attacking UP resources? Is there any negatives behind doing this (other than UP won't deal with me anymore)?

Pay them lots of money.

No, seriously. Talk to Fiona and she'll set it up. But it WILL cost you.

Head back to the mansion and talk to Fiona. There's a "bribe faction" option you'll have to use to get them to leave you alone.

No shit. I just got access to the 3rd faction (Jamaican Pirates) and the few times when I bribed the first two, it cost me almost 5 million each.

I think someone posted something like a 12 million figure when he paid a bribe later on the game. :lol

edit:

Yeah, this. :lol

You don't have to bribe them. Start going after the HVT's on their wanted lists or destroying buildings that are their targets. You'll soon come up in their estimation and they'll offer you missions. Bribing is just throwing money away in my opinion.

Of course, part of the fun of the game is trying to balance your relationships with the different factions. It's not Mercs if at least one of them isn't shooting at you. :lol

That's not the only option! Look around on your pda map, find a few VZ target buildings that the faction in question wants destroyed and level em. Same goes for HVTs- each HVT has a specific faction who put the hit out, so just pick the ones on the map that your faction is looking for and off them. You won't be able to call in a transport since they don't like you, but killing the target will have a positive effect.

great tips.
How are the VZ target buildings denoted on the PDA map? I don't recall anything 'highlighting' on the map unless it had some sort of marker on it.

Target a building on the map and hit A (360)/X(PS3). It gives you more info, including who has the contract.

Works for other things as well, including finding factions/posts with jobs for you to do.

I was doing a mission for U.P. the one where
you have to take the employee around to secure documents. I get to the point where you have to go up to the front of the ship and jump on the stationary gun.
Of course I grab the grenade launcher and start laying waste to the ensuing horde. An APC pulls up so I decide to send a gift to them. It gets engulfed in flames and just as it is ready to explode one of their faction members pulls right next to it. The APC explodes on cue and the jeep driver/astronaut gets launched straight at me, knocking me and the gun off the back of the ship. I had to restart the mission, but laughed my ass off.

My first time through this mission I made it all the way through until the exec was ready to go. I ran down the tower to the raven, but it was long since destroyed.. I hopped in another vehicle and raced toward UP headquarters. It wasn't until my body was flying through the air and the vehicle was in flames that I realized I had jacked a VZ jeep. UP lit me up something good.. DOH!

If your willing to put time into the game and know that it has a few quirks here and there and can accept that. You should have a good time.

It never gets old blowing shit up. Its like having a "playground of destruction" at your fingertips! Co-op = sex!

If reading the posts of everyone in this thread who are having a great time with the game isn't enough to tell you about it's quality, then I'm not sure what else can be said.

Needs more graphic whoring. Afterall, games are only worth playing if they have x amount of graphical effects, super high-res textures and next-gen animation & uber physics engines.

This game is so amazingly awesome, the amount of explosions that rocked the screen not only destroyed my controller and red ringed my console, debri literally flew out of the game from my HDTV and into my living room shortly before blowing up.

MERCs 2 BLOWS SHIT UP!

When in an enemy vehicle and you are getting your ass shot off by a friendly faction, press 'B' (on X360) to honk your horn. Your friends will then recognize you.

:lol That catches me sometimes too. The problem is your disguise. If you honk the horn it removes your disguise and they see you for who you really are.

The HVTs may not be available for you to pick until you activate the new faction. You might be limited to just bribing them until you fully activate them.

The game seems to be pretty buggy from what people are saying. I want a sandbox game, just not a broken one for full price.

Funniest part for me was finding out that you can Bunker Buster your own PMC villa, and the only complaint you get is Fiona bitching about blowing up her pink car. Funny last words while being bombed to death.

Tip: Turn autosave OFF before you experiment with this. :lol

Fair enough. But most of us haven't had any real bugs to report at all, and if you read what people are saying in the thread, you'll see that the overwhelming majority of us are having a complete blast (Pun fully intended) with this game.

I haven't run into a single bug myself, although, as I mentioned earlier, I did see a stack of crates suspended a few feet off the ground. Other than that, there hasn't been anything else that I've noticed at all. While it's not as polished as GTA IV, for me it's a lot more fun, and it does it's own thing very well.

better than gta iv? hmm that's interesting. I'll see if I can find this for a decent price.

Same.

Besides, there are only a handful of bug complaints compared to large amount of awesome complaints. :lol

Bug complaints go out the window when you drop that first bunker buster into a bad guy's lap! :lol

Careful there! I said I was personally having more fun with this than GTA IV. I do recognize that on a technical level, GTA is far superior. But shiny graphics aren't everything. Especially when you can have such an impact on the world the way you can in Mercs.

Mercs also delivers something that GTA didn't, namely campaign co-op, and it's oh so fun!

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it
Just picked it up along with Kathleen (yes, that Kathleen) at lunch. Gonna do some co-op later. Woot. Can't wait to blow shit up.

Concerning bugs, has anyone else noticed cars or barricades pop up outta nowhere sometimes? I'm just curious if its only my copy.

This hasn't happened to me in single player, although things did pop in much closer in co-op mode for me.

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Several times I have clipped through walls or have seen enemies get caught inside barricades/walls/statues in an endless loop running animation. And I've only put about an hour into the game.

Try getting into one of the Green/Black patrol boats near the pirate area.
THEN try to get out. :lol
You only get "stuck" if you trying to jump out of the back rather than walk left/right through the door like normal people.

Streaming issue. I've had the same experience as KFJ where it's much worse in co-op and things spawn far closer to you, but it's fine in SP.

I'm sure I've mentioned it in the thread already.

I havent had any major bugs, the worst is probably when I called in the support chopper to make a pickup and it fell into the ground and disappeared. I didnt get credit for the pickup either so that kinda sucked, but they are all over the place so no biggie.

Co-op glitches ive seen are things like when you escort someone one player sees the AI character, the other doesn't. We were also doing the mechanic mission where you drive the truck and failed. It spawned me on a motorbike about 200ft in the air when we retried it. That was kinda cool though, lol. I've also seen cars just pop up into the air a couple times.

None of this has soured me on the game in the least. In fact it adds some charm to it, in a buggy unpolished sort of way, lol.

AHH ok yeah I thought I really only noticed this in co-op mode. Single player was much better. Makes sense now I suppose. Thanks.

For those in question, this game is def worth getting.

I picked up the PS3 version and have been loving it...

A nice trick to keeping your factions friendly without having to resort to bribes is to reserve a few of the "blow-shit-up" missions for when you can maximize your return on them.

I got spotted assassinating a UP exec, and they all shifted to hostile on me. So, in order to save some cash and get them back into my good graces I blew up an entire fucking community of VN bases to the southeast. I'm serious. There was an entire mountain range in flames when I was done with em.

Made a profit and got the UP guys to love me again.

I'm saving some PLAV missions for just the same thing. Its almost certain I'm going to end up pissing them off soon enough.

That mission where you escort he UP VIP is out of control, and certainly not scripted from what im hearing.

On top of you guys stories, i was in a co-op game last night atthe last part with the tower. I got to the top, got the anti-air rockets, and took out the first chopper no problem. The second one got its tail blown off, and it flew RIGHT past me, spinning and on fire, at about 100 mph straight into the refinery type area across the street. It crashed and exploded, brought the refinery down, and a few of the huge pipes running in it fell straight down onto some enemy jeeps blowing them up. It all happened so fast my partner didnt even get to see it :lol

I did have one major co-op bug when playing the other night:

On the mission where you
recruit the mechanic, you have to test drive a special car of hers. I played this mission already so I was wondering how we could have the most fun in co-op. So I decided to take another vehicle and ride alongside him or even get ahead of him to neutralize some of the hostiles along the path.

Problem was we got separated. We ended up at opposite ends of the co-op player zone. Now, that mission area is full of twisty roads and switchbacks, so we weren't actually able to regroup with each other, because we'd have to go further into the no-go-zone in order to turn around and meet back up. So we were completely stuck.

That sucked. But that's the worst thing we experienced from playing a few hours.

Huh? You should have had the jet pilot a long time ago. Early in the game there's only one little box in the northern (pirate island) section. He is there and all you need to do is show up there and make him part of your team.

raYne

Member
notjackbauer said:
Who can tell me when I get the jet pilot? i just started doing missions for the pirates in the north.
There isn't really on order of getting things like that. For example, I've had my pilot for a long time now and I haven't even done any of the Pirate missions. From my pov, that'd be because I finish off all of a faction's missions before I move on to the next.

The way I did it was, I got Eva first (the mechanic). Then when you do her missions, she'll hook you up with the pilot. Either that or talk to Fiona and ask about the Pirates. You'll get the location and can pick him up there.

I did this mission 3 times just to try and do it different ways. One time I called in a chopper and pretty much transported him to both places quickly and painlessly (much less fun).

A definite holy shit moment was strapping the chopper full of C4 and taking it to the second section where there's tons of enemies. So I leave the chopper where the enemis are coming from and run up to the top of that tower. Sure enough, by the time I'm at the top some asshole VZ jacked my chopper. I wait until he circles back around over his own troops, set off the C4 and watch the fireworks.... Oh I hadn't mentioned that on my way I happened to winch a fuel tank and leave it in a good position. So now there are jeeps, APC's, choppers and fuel tanks making sweet man-charring music.

Of course there's still a ton of time left so at the end where the chopper leaves you the Anti Air rockets, I waited for the enemy choppers to come and jacked one. I once again put some C4 on that and tried flying it, jumping out, and detonating it into the other chopper. Unfortunately when you're falling you can't set off the C4 so my plan failed, but it was still fun to watch my chopper turn into a comet. I'm having too much fun.

There isn't any way, which is unfortunate when playing co-op and you get in the wrong seat. The other person has to stop and wait for you to hop out and back in.

Edit: I also wanted to throw this out there for people just starting out. You don't only have to throw one C4 at a time. After you stick it, and it shows you the detonater in the HUD, you can tap left on the d-pad again and choose more C4. This wasn't obvious to me at first, but it's good to know because you can put C4 on 4 corners of pretty strong buildings and bring them down.
