My pick for #3:

Intolerance - D.W. Griffith

A truly breathtaking film which retells 4 stories from across the ages concurrently. If there was any justice, the word EPIC should have been used to describe this movie first. Over 3000 extras, enormous set pieces and a revolutionary at the time cross cutting of visages from the stories being told, Griffith's first film after Birth of a Nation is easily his best, IMO. These 3 movies I've picked first are easily my most favorite 3 of all time, and they have not really changed in about 15 years.

For me, from this point forward, it's a likely crapshoot as the rest of any given top 10 from me is shape-shifting....

AlteredBeast

Fork 'em, Sparky!
12 Monkeys - Terry Gilliam

The best written film of all-time. Written.

Of course the acting and directing is no slouch either; Brad Pitt doesn't play himself like he does in nearly everything else. Bruce Willis' drugged out moment when he is in chains and heavily sedated is amazing. Time travel is one of, if not the most favorite topic of mine in movies. Perfection is close in this movie!

Already taken by SquirrelKiller in the last round.

The Verdict - Sidney Lumet

If you haven't seen it...shame on you. If you have and you weren't floored, I shake my head and weep. :)

So who here is naming films that are indeed great but aren't necessarily their favourite? I found I was almost tempted to, but then thought what is the point? Then I saw a lot of other people's picks and I get the impression that it is the case with some.

Eg: I love love love On the Waterfront or The Conversation, but I wouldn't count either in my top 10 of favourite films.

this is what i am doing. i know what my top 10 movies are, but what im trying to do in this thread is create a well-rounded list of 10 movies that i have seen given the conditions of the draft. for my first round i reserved my choice for a movie that i thought was going to be taken immediately and knew for sure that i wanted on my list as it is also one of my top 10 movies. but for my second round choice, i wanted to pick something that was animated, so i chose toy story, which is what i compare most animated movies to. for round 3, i decided to choose a documentary type film, and picked man on wire because it was one of the most enjoyable, if not the most enjoyable, documentary i have seen.

anyway, i dont think it would be possible, given how the draft works, to make an actual/representative top 10 favorite movies list. that would be an entirely different thread/discussion, and many of the movies that would be on my version of that list have already been taken.

EDIT: but yeah, being that I am running out of ideas/categories, or movies that i thought i wanted for those categories have already been picked, i'll probably end up having a list of a mix between my personal top 10 and what i think is a well-rounded top 10.

I'm basically just using everything I have rated as a 10 imdb as a starting list of choices (there are only 15) because they are movies that I think truly show the potential of the medium or their genre, and also are personal favorites. I also am using some favorites from the 9's that I just think are great movies.

I had to pick between the professional and the fifth element and it felt like i was carving out my own heart.

Oh, and a slight request of Vox. I was wondering that when you're updating the list of movies that have been taken, could you put a "as of post xxx" at the top. It would help when you're trying to see what's already been taken. Thanks.

I can't decide on one of my picks (out of a choice of two) so I'm waiting for someone to choose one of them so I can take the other. :lol

My first two picks (next ones following later or tomorrow).

#1 Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny - Liam Lynch
#2 The Shining - Stanley Kubrick
