At least it looks like this new team is trying to take advantage of the talent instead of dumbing everything down like the last producers.

The CW's Official Write-Up For Season 8:

Now in its eighth season, this modern reinterpretation of the enduring Superman mythology and its classic characters continues to blend realism, adventure and emotion into an exciting action series. With realistic portrayals and award-winning, state-of-the-art special effects, SMALLVILLE stars Tom Welling (The Fog, Cheaper by the Dozen movies), Allison Mack (The Ant Bully, Opposite Sex), Erica Durance (House of the Dead, The Butterfly Effect 2), Aaron Ashmore (Veronica Mars, The West Wing, upcoming The Christmas Cottage), Cassidy Freeman (Finishing the Game: The Search for a New Bruce Lee, Cold Case), Sam Witwer (Battlestar Galatica) and Justin Hartley (Aquaman, Passions). From Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Smallville airs Thursdays (8:00–9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on The CW.

This season, Clark Kent (Welling) moves closer than ever to embracing his calling as the iconic superhero he is destined to become. Spending less time in his hometown and more time in the big city of Metropolis, Clark will encounter new challenges and new faces – both friend and foe – as he begins his career at the Daily Planet. Characters from every corner of the DC Comics universe will pay visits, including Plastique, the heroine-to-be with an explosive personality; Maxima, the seductive, intergalactic goddess; and Superman's most formidable adversary, Doomsday, the only character who is able to kill Superman. This season will also feature an appearance by DC Comics' time-traveling Legion of Superheroes, who return from the future in an episode to be penned by renowned comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Last season came to a stunning conclusion with a confrontation between Clark and his longtime nemesis, Lex Luthor (former series star Michael Rosenbaum) under the frozen columns of Clark's arctic Fortress of Solitude. Years of secrets came to a head as Clark's former friend finally discovered the truth about Clark's alien heritage. Clark's world soon came crashing down as the fortress crumbled in an icy avalanche, leaving both characters' fate a mystery.

Lex's moment of truth didn't come without a price. He murdered his father, Lionel (former series star John Glover) for information about the legendary Traveler. Clark also had to defeat Brainiac (recurring guest star James Marsters), who had banished Clark's Supergirl cousin Kara (recurring guest star Laura Vandervoort) to the Phantom Zone and attacked both Chloe (Mack) and Lana (former series star Kristin Kreuk), leaving them both in catatonic comas. Though Brainiac's demise ultimately lifted their trances, Chloe was soon arrested for hacking into federal databases – just as she was about to respond to a marriage proposal from Jimmy Olsen (Ashmore). Meanwhile, in a tearful, videotaped good-bye, Lana told Clark that she was leaving Smallville and his life forever, encouraging Clark to fulfill his destiny – something he wouldn't be able to accomplish with her in his world. While one chapter of his life seemingly came to an end, another was about to begin. With fewer commitments tethering Clark to the farm, Lois Lane (Durance) asked him to apply for a job opening at the Daily Planet.

Season eight begins a few weeks after the Fortress' icy collapse, as a LuthorCorp arctic excavation team investigates Lex's whereabouts. Members of the Justice League reunite in the search for Clark, who has been rendered powerless by the fall of the Fortress. As the season unfolds, Clark's new position at the Daily Planet will mean working across the desk from Lois. The two will be forced to team up to cover Metropolis' most pressing goings on. Sometimes it's Lois herself who becomes Clark's biggest obstacle, especially when he's on a deadline. But with Clark and Lois thrust into such close proximity, sparks are bound to fly, and feelings will start to surface that come as a surprise to both of them. At the same time, Clark begins to discover the balancing act he must perform as he explores his dual identities as both reporter and superhero.

Even with Lex gone, the Luthor mansion isn't vacant for long. Its newest resident is the beguiling Tess Mercer (Freeman), who, according to Lex's written instructions, has been placed in charge of LuthorCorp and all of its projects, including oversight of the Daily Planet. Tess proves to be as inscrutable as she is cunning, and is an enigmatic new presence in everyone's lives. It won't be long before Tess' attention turns to Clark. But Clark is wary of her intentions, and as the layers of her past are peeled away, new mysteries surface. Through it all, Tess' resolve remains unshakable – to find Lex Luthor, as she is convinced he is still alive.

Clark isn't the only one who will face formidable challenges. Oliver Queen (Hartley) returns to make Metropolis his home. He finds himself at a crossroads, forced to travel through some dark terrain – especially when demons from his past are reawakened. Oliver ultimately begins to question his role as a superhero, just as Clark is embracing his own.

With a new fiancé and puzzling new abilities that intrigue her as much as they frighten her, Chloe decides to turn her attention toward helping others. She takes over where Lana left off and reopens the Isis Foundation to provide counseling for those with meteor-powered abilities. She soon finds just how tricky the meteor-powered can be. Chloe's life is further complicated when she meets Metropolis paramedic Davis Bloome (Witwer). A tireless public servant, Bloome strikes up a fast friendship with Chloe. Soulful and mysterious, Bloome has demons of his own. He's troubled by large gaps of time that he can't remember, and as he comes closer to the answers, he must confront his own worst fear – that at his core he is pure evil.

The series, based on DC Comics characters, was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (both of Spider-Man, Shanghai Noon movies, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and is executive produced by Kelly Souders (Stuck) & Brian Peterson (But I'm a Cheerleader), Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer (both of Control, Natural Selection), Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola (latter three from One Tree Hill, The Bronx Is Burning, Norbit, Wild Hogs). This description was copied and pasted from KryptonSite.com. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

They released a bunch more pictures from Smallville season 8 for those interested:

The first selection of photos are brand new ones for the first episode entitled "Odyssey" which show off three of the Justice League characters (Green Arrow, Aquaman and Black Canary). Check them out here:

http://www.kryptonsite.com/odysseygallery14.htm

The next batch is arguably a lot more interesting. These pictures shows various new scenes which shows a strong advancement in the Superman Mythology. Stuff like Lois and Clark working for the Daily Planet, Clark saving people in Metropolis among other "Superman" themed settings. Check those photos out here:

Trailer hasn't been released yet but that didn't stop someone from getting a hold of it and taking a crap load of pictures from it. The trailer is for episode 1 "Odyssey" and you can check out the pictures here:

Also here is a small trailer I made (nothing fancy):

And they did a really good job bringing costumes into the Smallville universe.

It's always felt a little more "realistic" than the comics, but I think they pulled it off.

By the way, there's been talk of somehow doing a Smallville/Supernatural crossover.

As weird as that is, it would probably be awesome to watch. Especially considering Jensen Ackles (Dean on Supernatural) was a cast member on Smallville during season 4. :lol

If they do it, I assume they would do some sort of "multiple universe" type deal, with both shows being in their own universe. The idea of parallel dimensions could work in Supernatural and that would explain the lookalike character in Dean.

I can't wait for season 8, one of the few new shows that I watch. Can't wait for this and supernatural to start.

Supernatural is one of the most underrated shows on TV. It really should be at a Buffy level of cult popularity, but it's not.

Last season was so awesome. Too bad Ruby's not coming back next year, just like Kara isn't coming back to Smallville. Stupid CW budget cuts. :[

Kara will be back in at least one episode this year. I don't think they have lowered the budget but rather instead wanted to spend the money they used on her on other characters they feel are more important right now (that seems to be the general consensus on the Smallville forums).

I found this comment from Geoff Johns intriguing:

So as most of you know, I'm writing an episode of Smallville this year. I've already begun working with the Smallville executive producers and head writers - Todd, Darren, Kelly and Brian - and some of the staff - Bryan, Turi, Al and Caroline. They all rock. They've been super nice, super genuine people and they've welcomed me into their clubhouse with open arms. Working on Smallville has been some of the most fun I've ever had in my career.

I can tell you with confidence, the season they have planned is easily the most ambitious to date. There are so many twists and turns. And episode 10. Episode 10 is INSANE. My episode is now 11, so it's going to be a hard act to follow, but I'll give it my all. I have to say too, that if they pull off where they're taking Doomsday...I mean, I didn't understand where they were going when they announced that Doomsday had a human alter ego. But it's freaking cool. As hell. And fans of the comics are going to be blown away when everything is actually revealed. It's really pretty spectacular.

Also, the Legion? They are absolutely, 100% on point with the Legionnaires and their relationship with Clark Kent. I can say you'll see an appearance by one of the Legion's better known enemies, but I can't reveal who just yet. More information to come when I can talk about it.

See I've never really liked the Black Canary's looks, but I think it is more of the actress they chose. I think she is pretty cheesy looking. I agree with you I like the costumes of the Justice League, but I wouldn't call the costumes "realistic", I would call them more modern. I couldn't imagine Aquaman or the Green Arrow pulling off the costumes used in the comic books, they just wouldn't work. However, I think the more modern Kara costume is the best thing since sliced bread.

I came in to post that Geoff Johns comment, because it got me hyped.

So I'm going to bold why it got me hyped:

For those worried about Doomsday still, it really does sound like they might be onto something here. Here's part of a Newsarama interview with the actor:

NRAMA: Sam, tell us a little about your dual role as Davis Bloome/Doomsday?

Witwer: Davis Bloome is a paramedic in Metropolis. He’s a very cool, conscientious nice guy. He's this sort of a perpetual outsider. He grew up in the foster system. He was bounced from home to home and had a very tough childhood. He is brought into the story because he forms this fast friendship with Chloe [and] eventually he starts sort of blacking out, missing time and he becomes curious as to why that is happening.

What he learns is really horrible stuff. He finds out that he is innately the opposite of what he wanted to be. Hopefully the telling of that story will be very sad and psychologically messed up and it will probably very easily be the darkest stuff Smallville has ever done. Then eventually he is Doomsday and he will eventually resemble the character DC Comics fans are expecting,

NRAMA: How will he look?

Witwer: That I can not comment on but I will say that he will eventually resemble what people are expecting.

So far season 8 looks like it's going to rock. The first episode "Odyssey" will air Thursday, September 18th.

Besides on CW, is this airing on any Canadian Network? A Channel was showing it a day early last year which worked with my schedule. I don't see it on their prime time schedule this season.

Haha, well we know Clark will be fine, but I definitely figured Chloe would be the one to save him and thought "oh, well that's predictable" as soon as the arrow went through him.

Was nice to see Papa Kent again for a second. :[

A WATCHFUL GUARDIAN!?!?!?!?!??!?!

BATMAN?????????????????

/Justice League!

I remember an episode of Justice League Unlimited where at the end Superman was making an announcement that he wanted to end the League and decommission the Watchtower, but Green Arrow gave a nice little monologue and talked him out of it.

Batman then asked him: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? And GA replied: "Who guards the guardians?" We've got it covered.

It's the same episode that this awesome clip is from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53OyPYa7SEI

Is the Flash supposed to make an appearance this season? At first he was an ass, but he later turned out being pretty cool.

This episode was better than all of last season, so it's a start at making things right.

Will totally suck dick to see a human Doomsday tho

I'm not exactly sure Doomsday will just be another human. Some spoilers suggest that he might be closer to the real Doomsday then we are expecting but that we won't see that until later in the season.

As for this episode goes, it completely rocked. It also seemed like it was indeed a little darker tone which of course worked very well for the show. I remember when the show first aired and they didn't even have blood in it. Now that everyone has grown up (actors and fans) the show has also grown up and that is definitely an awesome thing as it gives a real sense of progression.

Smallville season 8 looks like it's going to deliver an epic season and there was a few hints in this episode that pointed towards the Superman mythos which ultimately put a smile on my face. Definitely am looking forward to next weeks episode. Here are some spoilers regarding the next episode for those interested:

The CW's Official Description (Added 9/5/08): TDC COMICS CHARACTER PLASTIQUE BLASTS INTO METROPOLIS; DAVIS BLOOME ARRIVES IN SMALLVILLE — It's Clark's (Tom Welling) first day at the Daily Planet with Louis (Erica Durance), and the pair are immediately thrown together on a story when a bus explodes outside the office. Clark rescues Bette (guest star Jessica Parker Kennedy), a young girl who bonds with Chloe (Allison Mack) over their shared meteor abilities, but Bette is hiding a big secret. Paramedic Davis Bloom (Sam Witwer) arrives in Metropolis and is drawn to Chloe.

UPDATED 7/9/08: Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello has revealed that we may have a Chloe/Doomsday/Jimmy love triangle brewing. Also, regarding Lois and Clark at the Daily Planet: "There will be a lot more comedy this season, courtesy of those new adventures Lois and Clark will be embarking on."

UPDATED 7/7/08: Bette has a connection to Level 33.1 or something very much like it.
- Roles now being cast, in addition to the role of Bette, include the following: Security Agent, Young Cop, Medic, Tommy, Clerk, and two CSI's.

UPDATED 7/4/08: This episode will explore Clark's first day on his new job and his teaming with Lois.

UPDATED 7/3/08: "Plastique" does indeed involve Bette Sans Souci, the character from the DC Comics universe. In this version she is a "15 year old street kid" who is injured in an explosion, and Chloe asks her to move in. (Thanks to S.A.M. for that tip!)
- Contrary to some reports that Chloe will be serving time for a while... in actuality, Chloe will no longer be incarcerated by the time this episode happens.
- Justin Hartley (Oliver) and Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy) do not appear in this episode.

UPDATED 7/2/08: This episode will explore Clark's first day on his new job and his teaming with Lois.
- The character of paramedic Davis Bloom makes his first appearance in this episode, and he interacts primarily with Chloe.

UPDATED 7/1/08: Title Posted. Please do not repost this on other websites without a link to KryptonSite.com.
- Plastique is a DC Comics villain from Firestorm and Captain Atom comics.

-Clark stops an accident involving a Bus, people see him stop the bus. He then begins to think more about a dual identity.

*sigh*

There was a time when if nothing else, Smallville could be counted on for great season premieres and finales. In the past 2 seasons, they've lost the ability to deliver on the finale end of things, and sadly, this was the first time Ive ever hated a premiere, too. So mediocre, not a single standout thing about it. Having the Justice League of Shitty Actors being around lots this year doesnt exactly raise my hopes up, either.

Also, I was thinking, and has anyone else realized that pretty much every season since S3 had ended the excat same way? Clark missing/trapped/whatever?

Are you kidding me? This was 100 times better than all of season 7 combined. You want a bad finale, that was it. The whole season lead up to a pile of shit. I wanted to punch the screen it was so bad, the whole season was a complete and utter waste of time.

This episode had more(and better quality) story progression than any other episode I've ever seen. He's finally changing from pussyman to superman. I got so sick of the whining and sad sack crap he went on with every single episode.

Loved the episode, it gave the feeling that the new writers wanted to change a lot of things and it has already started. I hope the rest of the season is this good.

Sure, S7 was crap. So was S6. Being better than crap doesnt mean a whole lot. For the record though, I dont think they've done a "great" episode since the S5 premiere (the one where Braniac arrived for the first time).
