WTF?:lol Welcome to 2008? Add in "compared to" next time. The game doesnt look bad.

Im gonna take a break from playing but I think im just about halfway through the Story and Ive been playing since 1:30 ish so about 5 hours so far. Im really loving this game so far. The Story has me hooked, the Graphics are great, and the music and sound are fantastic. This game isnt perfect by any means but its far from horrible. I'd give it a solid 8/10 for now.

btw, im playing the 360 version.

Wanted to get this, enjoyed the demo. But then I saw Gametrailers review and it really turned me off. 7 hours of repetitive gameplay =(

As long as you enjoy said gameplay, I don't see the problem here? I don't enjoy RPG's any less though the gameplay may generally be the same for dozens of hours.

I just played through the first level. That was a charged ending to that level. Great game so far I must say. I like how the Apprentice isn't just a mindless killer.

I loved the demo's gameplay and I'm looking forward to the story. Sounds really good.
I wanted to pick it up today, but my car is back at home and my buddy with a car who wanted to get it as well is busy as hell this week. :(
I should be able to get it Thursday though...

Regarding the concern of repetitive Gameplay:

As I upgrade combos and force powers it really changes my perspective on the way I play the game. Yes there are alot of similiar waves of enemies at times but there are many different ways to go about attacking them. Switch it up, experiment with different combos, and it'll keep the game fresh as you go along. Atleast IMO.

I hope more People give this game a fair chance as I personally dont think it deserves the hate its been getting.

Thats the way I feel, it may seem like endless repetitive gameplay in reviews and trailer but when you are playing it you really dont feel that. The levels go by too fast and the story keeps the game moving

Yeah, use the force sometimes to kill people or just slash them to hell with the lightsaber

I think my biggest disappointment with the game has to be the fact you cannot really die, if you die you restart and everyone else is just as damaged.

I see a lot of people hating on this game but it's exactly what it promised, a badass Star Wars brawler with a lot of destruction and a pretty solid story. Did anyone not think that combat was going to be a bit repetitive? It's a beat-em-up for chrissakes. It's not a great game, but it's exactly what I was hoping it would be.

I think some people were hoping for depth to the combat system at least on par with God of War, if not Ninja Gaiden or DMC. I know it's semi-disingenuous to say, but if this wasn't Star Wars, nobody would give it a second glance.

Different games have different strengths. I'm playing through Force Unleashed because it's Star Wars and the story. People play Ninja Gaiden and DMC for the gameplay.

I play it because i want to chop people up with my Wiimote.:D

I'm on the 4th level or so and here are my impressions so far:

-Camera that would make Ninja Gaiden jealous.
-Load times that would make Motorstorm jealous.
-Rough/unfinished feel to the game that would make Alone in the Dark or Mercenaries 2 jealous.
-Bad level designs.
-Bad targeting.
-Boring combat.
-Lame enemies and boss fights.

So far this game is pretty crappy. Hopefully it picks up.

the game's "awesome wowsome" physics engine that's supposed to be the big thing about the next gen version hasn't really stopped me from enjoying the ps2 version at all, the ps2 wii and psp versions have a custom physics engine and it works just as well ..

the guards aren't as "clingy" to stuff , but they still fly around and smack the walls just fine.

--

Other then that i don't like this little save issue the game has, eg i will run into checkpoints and the game "auto saves" my progress, but if i turn off the game during a level the next time i play it i'll begin from the start of that level, not from the last check point.

oh well, at least the force points do not reset, so happy farming.

also, the default camera speed on the ps2 is ridiculously fast, turning it to slow from the options menu helps control it a lot, and i know a lot of people hate them, but i like the QTE's in this game. But they tend to repeat a lot for boss battles.

I'm enjoying it thus far. Slightly repetitive, though I've found that the pretty large number of options I have in regards to combat make things fresh fairly often. That and I'm genuinely enjoying the story. There are some really annoying bugs though. I've gotten knocked off the map a few times now and just when I was about to
pull down the star destroyer
my game froze :(.

I don't feel to positive or negative about the level design, but the art is pretty good on some levels. The painted backgrounds look beautiful and there are times where the graphics are pretty amazing. Starting the game out as Vader is one of the most atmospheric scenes I've played in next gen and probably one of the more atmospheric environments in a Star Wars game other than perhaps KotOR.

So far I think the game is getting a bit of a bad rap. Its good fun.

So far i'm really liking it. I'm enjoying the graphics, sound, gameplay. The only thing i don't like is what every reviewer does seem to like, which is the story.

And
i absolutely hate the main-character and his group(Starkiller,Kota,Juno, ect.) I really hope that for the sequel they continue Luke Skywalker's story.

I've been playing it on Sith Lord difficulty and I actually haven't noticed that....cause I've died quite often you see

Maybe it's disabled on anything higher than default difficulty?

What were you expecting the game play to be like? Help the Jedi do their taxes lol
I mean it's an action game, so yes there will be alot of action, there are some puzzle elements though very minor. I don't think the game style is any different then other similar action games. Not to say there aren't problems, as you mention below...

Don't get me wrong, but I think it's too repetitive and they pull the same thing over and over. A few changes between levels wouldn't hurt the game, but it sooooooo repetitive.

Some puzzles with the force powers that makes you think instead of having one button pressed (like most of them) would be cool.

The game got fun once I got to play as the Apprentice, the prologue didn't have quite the oomph I thought it would. Vader should have had more than just some basic Force capabilities, he was too slow, the level dragged on and the boss battle, at least on the Sith Lord difficulty, felt like it took waaaayyyyy too long. I'm also kind of disappointed with how the combat has been dialed back compared to the demo, I thought what abilities you had in the demo were what you would start off with in the full version of the Force Unleashed.

It's rough around the edges but once the game got going I started to enjoy it. Even though your abilities are a little scaled back compared to the demo there's still fun to be had with the environments. My favorite bit being using the giant mechanised welding torch arms to fry Rebel and Imperial troops alike in one part of the facility in the first level.

No, God no. I'm glad they've taken a different direction for this game. I've had six movies with the Skywalker clan. I've had numerous games with them as well. Give me a Star Wars game, movie, whatever that doesn't deal with any Skywalker.

Played all the way up to the beginning of the giant mushroom level. The art direction and visuals of this game are gang banging my eyes! There's just so much gorgeous stuff to look at. Really enjoying the gameplay too, like I did in the demo. Loved the two Jedi duels I've had thus far. The story is pretty cool, and it actually feels like a Star Wars story (I'm looking at you prequels). The music is also amazing.

My only issue so far is the loading when pulling up the upgrade menu. Surely this could been seamless right?

Enjoying the game, but the boss fights are some of the worst ever devised for a videogame. "Guess what Force trick I won't block or deflect!" Ugh...just awful. I actually would prefer it just skip the encounter and cut right to the dramatic QTE's.

Story really is the most interesting part of the game so far, surprising really. I dig the combat too, though the glitches and bugs are very noticeable and do detract. A shame, this could have been outstanding rather than a mere 7/10.

The final Boss(atleast I think it is) is extremely frustrating and pretty lame. Ive enjoyed the game up until this point. Everytime I aim the controls the way it tells me to bring it down its just not working.

Yeah, but this story is still in part about a Skywalker.
And in a lot of ways it cheapens Anakin's redemption in episode6.
Not to mention how many plotholes this story creates.
We also haven't seen a lot of Luke Skywalker as a jedi, only in ROTJ, i would imagen that the galaxy would be in chaos after the empire's fall and that a lot of smaller factions make a grab for power. Regardless, the force would be truely unleashed with Luke Skywalker since he is the most powerful jedi in history.
I still think this game is great for a Star Wars game regardless of the faulty storyline.
I already bought the xbox360 version which is really good.
And i also want to buy the PS2 or PSP version, does anyone have impressions of the ps2 version, is it aleast graphically better then the PSP?

I just got to the
junkyard
level, about half way through it. My god the level is gorgeous. Fantastic art direction so far. I'm finding melee to be equally as enjoyable as GoW's ever was, and the leveling system seems nicely paced, and not overly done for an action game. So far I'm loving the game, I just know it won't last long enough, which is why I'm taking my time, trying to find everything and complete the secondary objectives. I've noticed some minor problems here and there, but not "game-breaking" like many of the reviews pinned them as. Story is great here so far as well.

I agree. Visually, I love the apprentice's 2nd mission. The boss on the other hand..

.. F*ck You Kazdan. You crazy-force-wielding-saber-swinging-council-replicating-junkyard-Jedi-son-of-a-bitch.
I'm playing on Sith Lord ("I've made a huge mistake"). I'm sure most of you felt my anger in the force when I fought the guy that
hunts wookies
. Changing the difficulty setting gets very tempting at times.

hmnn.. i want to like this game.. you're getting me hyped again....... do you think it feels rushed/ they should have waited and invest more time?

Picked up the PSP version today partially due to the historic missions and the ability to play it at work, and OMG the SPARKS! THE SPARKS!

I am pretty far into the game and think it is quite a bad game. I have yet to see where this story is supposed to get good and I think I am nearing the end, so I can't really name any great qualities this game has.

WTF? The story got awesome as soon as they showed a toddler ripping Vader's saber out of his hands.

Ok, so apparently this 'good story' never came up even after I finished the game. Are people just so used to the bad story telling in both Star Wars and Video Games that this seemed good by comparison? Nope, nothing after the credits either...I guess claiming it had a good story was more fluff like GTA4 having and Oscar worthy one.

Not sure what you expected from Star Wars if you didn't think the story was any good. Maybe you should go on back to your Dostoevsky and leave us groundlings to our mind candy. :lol

I am very deep into the game now, I expect only a few levels left.

The Good:

  • Levels are gorgeous.
  • Challenging but not frustrating.
  • Powers level up at a great pace.
  • Lots of different enemies, each stage has a few new ones.
  • Very good story (though I wish it would delve deeper into it)
  • Some good action setpieces in each level, its not always just moving along and fighting.
  • Boss fights are pretty damn epic.

The bad:

  • Even though you are gaining lots of powers as you play, the combat doesn't ever seem that different, whats worse...
  • ... is that new enemies start to negate certain powers, all of a sudden you can't force grab enemies, or you can use lightsabers on others, or some are only vulnerable to lightning. Normally I like games that give me enemies that force me to use different combat abilities but in this case I want to feel like I am a Jedi and canceling out moves like that does not invoke that feeling.
  • Combat against enemies with lightsabers and force powers is worse than combat with regular baddies. This is where the combat really fails for me, these battles against force users should be the most interesting but instead many of your powers wont work and you are forced to use a particular move over and over, it becomes a simple game of hit and run. I dont think any game has perfected the Jedi on Jedi (in this case force using enemies) combat but the Jedi Knight series i feel handled it better.

I know I wrote a lot on the bad side but its cause it takes more explanation, the good definitely outweighs the bad. I have played many action games while this one sort of has the feel of a generic action game, it makes up for it with impressive effects, great production values, and a unique gameplay mechanic in the force.

Luke is not the most powerful jedi in history

He probably is, actually. Anakin had the potential to become the most powerful ever seen, but his injuries put the kibosh on that. Luke, as his offspring, had similar potential. The fact that he was able to stand up to the most powerful Sith Lord of all time (although his inexperience with Force lightning left him wide open to the point he required Vader's assistance) is pretty good evidence that Luke was top tier material at the very least.

I though Yoda, Mace, and Shaak Ti .

Ben Skywalker

I expect some attempt to build the characters before they try to shoe them into some greater plan. Maybe it's because I'm not read up on the star wars lore outside of the movies and other games, but even if the story is somewhat entertaining if you understand all the hints they drop, it still isn't a good story.

Yoda lost to Palpatine, Luke beat him (assist: Vader).
Mace lost to Palpatine (assist: Vader).
Shaak Ti? Middle of the road Jedi with higher than average creativity.

Ben Skywalker

I don't read that EU shit.

Speaking of Ben, though, Obi-Wan could be considered in the running considering he beat Maul, Fett, Grievous and Anakin. He seems more smarter than everyone else than powerful, though.

Force Unleashed has no EU connections, really. All the non-film characters are introduced here. I'm not sure what you want out of a Star Wars videogame story. I'd suggest the novelization for a more character-driven take on the same events, but if you don't "get" what's going on from the game's cutscenes, I don't really know what to tell you. Seemed pretty obvious who everyone was, what everyone wanted, and what was going on. Just Vader acting like a colossal dick was great to see by itself.

Top Bottom
