The Outer Worlds review thread

Well, its not impossible to have a first time of failure, Obsidian had that with Alpha Protocol, not to mention KoTOR II and PoE II (the latter being a financial kick to them) that were less well received than their first games,, but all of them had a positive reception later on. Even Fallout New Vegas by the press was considered a great game, but not something that surpassed FO3, althrough fans said otherwise.

Heyyy, Alpha Protocol is one of my favorite games of all time! :D

Yep, i can clearly see microsoft who greenlight a single player game without multyplayer in a niece genre where 1-2 milions copy sold are already a tonne...

I play offline PC games (like RPGs) sitting on my comfy couch with a controller on my 55" 4k screen. I also play my games at 4k 60fps native completely maxed settings, and I don't give a shit about price. When you want the best you make sacrifices to get the best.

Also you don't use a headset? Fucking amateur hour over here if you don't. Hope you don't play online games with that 5:2:4 atmos system. Wait, you ARE one of those guys I have to mute aren't you?

That said, I love my ps4 and will love my ps5. I understand the reason for people wanting to own a console, but being an ass about how you think its better is just moronic. There is absolutely nothing "better" about console other than price. Which is fine.

Absolutely nothing other than price? then on which PC will you play your "most beloved" playstation games such as the Last of us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima? Oh wait. Looks like you'll need a console for that. It's that kind of contradiction (after glaring omissions) that you end up in when you glorify the PC mainly in order to bash only the console that MS makes. 4k is 4k everywhere (you must be the only person I know with a 55" OLED PC monitor). As for the fps, next gen consoles should repair part of that. Ain't paying double (and every 2 years) to enjoy less games and at comparable quality. Let's agree to disagree, mr "price doesn't matter".

No, IP belongs to the developer in Private Division's case. They do hold the publishing rights for Outer Worlds 1, So, they make money off the sales. No idea if Microsoft will go the exclusive route though.

Wrong - The IP is retained by Obsidian and now Microsoft since they own Obsidian.

"Rather than going big with benchmark-setting endeavors like Grand Theft Auto or supporting perennial juggernauts like NBA 2K, the new label's directive is to identify smaller teams of experienced developers with great ideas, fund their projects, and in a surprise twist, let the studios keep the rights to the intellectual property."

That's what I said.

An rpg that respects my time sounds amazing right now. Full time job with a six year old and a gf doesn't exactly leave a lot of time for gaming.

I could kill a character close to one of my companions, and the moment I tried to speak to said companion she'd immediately leave the party—but if I never started that conversation, she'd stick around and even follow me into battle. I finished the game in both states, and was surprised to discover the game could tell the difference between those two states, and gave slightly different endings for the character in each case.

From the EGM 10/10 review.

Congratulations to Obsidian and also MS for finally getting a new first Party IP which is RPG for their ecosystem.

Outerworld 2 will definitely get green light from MS now.

Im excited cant wait and i get it for the cheap on gamepass. Cant beat the value

Its on gamepass for pc too right? Imma get it on both to compare

That's much better than I thought, was gonna play it anyway as it's my type of game but I expect this to be a very flawed experience.

Amazing reviews, definitely didn't see them coming.

Also, lmao at the idea that 40 hours isn't long enough. Go and play a Ubisoft game if you want padded time wasters.

BTW: It's 9 years since Fallout:New Vegas,

I still don't understand Metacritic and how they choose reviews. They are missing tons of obvious ones. I give them the benefit of the doubt since its early, but at least OpenCritic is more of a representation of overall scores.

So around 85. Better than I expected.

Another cool thing about OpenCritic — they don't weigh their scores — meaning a review from a newer website is just as important to the overall score as one from Gamespot or IGN. Also, with OpenCritic you can tell it which critics you trust and don't trust and it will adjust what it shows you (and the overall score).

There is a difference between finishing the main storeline in a game in 15-20 hours and seeing all there is to see in a game in that time. If the game takes more after the Bioware RPGs then there isn't much to see or do outside the main story anyway, and that will be disappointing. If it takes after New Vegas then there is plenty of extra stuff outside the main story. I'm hoping it's the latter, but I'm fearing it's not truly an open-world sandbox. I'm expecting something more like Mass Effect, which sucks because I was hoping for New Vegas in space.

But we'll see.

I welcome an RPG minus the filler that slogs me down and has me quitting long before the end. Thank you Obsidian.
Agreed. Similar to Mass Effect series, you can make them 30+ hours but the main game is a lot less, and for me that is a sweet spot for RPGs. I'd rather be left wanting more than get burned out like I did in Witcher 3 and Skyrim style of games (great games but I never complete them).

LOL I was talking about hardware, IQ and framerate retard. A lot of people use 4k tvs to play PC games as well.

Also, you seem to ignore that I am a PS4 gamer for the exclusives and other games. IMO, those have been going down hill since Uncharted 2 though (yes I thought Last of Us was boring, and the second one looks like a more SJW version of the first). The only Sony exclusives I have liked this gen are Bloodborne and Horizon Zero dawn. Even with that said I play 70-75 percent of my games on PS4. In fact I own two right now (one for me and one for my wife). Keep being butt hurt though.

Ps5 + PC is going to be amazing next gen! I will be playing ALL of the games.

So, in general there were a few more posts about FPS loss on PC. Maybe related to a setting? Or just Epic Games drm going wild?

Will be interesting to see if those issues persists on the Game Pass version.

Those scores can't be right. The critics are shills being controlled by main stream media. They're all a bunch of trolls!

I have game pass and I'll play it later.

You have your PC connected to your 55" living room tv and I am the retard. Sure Einstein. And butthurt? I own every current gen consoleand also 2 PCs that I use for more important endeavours than gaming. Have a good life.

I watched Gamespots video review. Was done...surprisingly well. The most important thing the reviewer said was that once he finished the game he wanted more. He felt it necessary to go back through and play a different way. When he said that I was sold.

eurogamer nails it. this game's looked to me to be the embodiment of the concept of 'comfort food' since it's first reveal. i'm sure i'll have fun, but i'm not expecting the unexpected, & am pretty confident i won't be getting it...

Was first like "Hm unexpected good scores but I'm not gonna get it for full price". Then saw that it is on PC gamepass. What a nice suprise. Downloading now!

No idea if Microsoft will go the exclusive route though.

I think Matt Booty signaled that this is the type of franchise that they would like to make exclusive. I forget exactly where I saw that, but it was in a video where some journalist (GI?) was getting Obsidian developers' take on what Booty had said about this. Which was something to the effect that some games they would keep multi-plat, but others they'd want to make part of their exclusive stable, indicating that Outer Worlds might be the latter.

??? i dont get it, whats wrong with that?. I also have my PC connected to my 50inch, many PC gamers do. Are only consoles allowed to use tv's or something?

The sad thing is there are some people on some forums, who will have some more distain for the outer worlds because MS bought Obsidian, there starting there pre emptive smear campaign just incase Obsidian do outer worlds 2 as a XBOX/PC exclusive.

There are some on here that have done the same. How often did you hear anyone say anything bad about Obsidian before Microsoft bought them?, you see certain people saying it all the time on here now.
They need to remember that this game has nothing to do with Microsoft, before they start the tiresome cliche schtick.

I was keeping an eye on this, but admit time flew by without me keeping up with it. I just started looking at it again the past week or so, definitely got on my radar. After this, it's DEFINITELY a play for me, also it being on Game Pass makes it even more of a no brainer.

Will play on PC this weekend! :messenger_sunglasses: :messenger_ok:

Ah, I see. You consider skipping 95% of the game "beating it".

Fuck that noise.

Lol well they've given this game the 15-40 hours .. so my guess is if you want to do everything on average around the 40 hour mark .. that is without DLC .. Fallout 3 is around 60 with all DLC, Fallout 4 is around 75 with all the DLC, New Vegas is around 60 with DLC .. some people can probably play them all faster or slower ..

So there won't be much difference I'm sure once all the DLC is released and what not .. so still tons of hours of gameplay ..

It's honestly a form of mental illness, these people need help.
