It's true. A ton of guys drink it here too.

Don't really hear it used anymore, not seriously, I think we're in the comedown fatigue/apathy-era where shit just straight dies (Concord) instead of people passionately fighting over things. It's really a truly fucking grim time to be surfing the woke wave. Sadly, plenty of projects that got on that wave too late are feeling the pain. The slowpokes will be picked apart.

Keep in mind games take a long time to cook, this project might have kicked off at the height of the great schism.
If I'm the owner of the company, and my business and livelihood depended the the game doing well, I've had enough time since the concord disaster to change direction, even if I can't change the plot and dialogue, I can change the character models. But the fact is, for people who work at AAA, nothing is at stake, they collect a paycheck, if the game fails they can get reassigned, or get a six month severance and get another paycheck elsewhere, at least that's their expectations. So they don't even bother to change direction.

Eh, they got Gamepass and Phil Spencer is a saint, fuck it dood, ship it lmao

I didn't expect Sony to be the first ones to truly freak the fuck out about this. They don't have that Activision insurance that xbox onboarded, though.

Microsoft can afford to carry deadweight longer than Sony. This is why consolidation into massive companies are always a bad idea, leads to inefficiency and bloat.

Phil Spencer loves old games, and in his eyes, Obsidian is boomer gamer royalty (they were!), he'll keep them around by hiding their fuckups underneath COD or something for sure. Not a bad thing, a studio is better than no studio at all. Hopefully the money-bros at Microsoft don't discover them.

As mentioned in the thread, Grounded 2 seems to have done pretty good, and this game is one of their medium teams, so it's not really as high stakes as Concord. Just pretending it is to make the thread exciting.

I mean graphically yeah some parts look good, particularly the environments and lighting. I was meaning more just the game itself, like the ideas and gameplay.

If we're just talking graphics though, the animations and character models do also look two generations behind though.
Animations and character models is what 99% of AAA is, and Obsidian is AA. But it still will look pretty good. Avowed had pretty solid combat as well, so I'm expecting it to be fun. Only question in my mind really is just the writing, and Avowed was pretty good there too. Not 10/10 writing, but totally serviceable for an RPG.

Maybe on a deep, deep sale. But as a male, I'm quite done with games and art direction that carries the explicit intent of not appealing to the male gaze.

I don't need everything to be Stellar Blade, but this "make sure there's nothing at all that a heterosexual male would remotely enjoy looking at" approach is extreme enough to make me avoid a game I'd otherwise be interested in.

I'm the same way, I never needed every game to be Stellar Blade, but these people make it clear that the omission is deliberate because they resent me and resent making any thing that's I might enjoy looking at. So I'm going to make it clear that the feeling is mutual.

Oh man, and the EDGE preview got me hyped with immsim elements that you have at your disposal, and they painted a pretty picture too with the environmental details and how it feels "lived in". This trailer does not present that preview in that way.

Maybe it's a slippery slope to adult media addiction. We grew up with sophisticated gooner marketing and half of us are sex crazed lunatics today.

I'm being hyperbolic but maybe there are legit good reasons to avoid sexualizing games above just keeping the pearl clutchers happy.

This game seems to target younger audiences too, which is appropriate to not do anything risky. I just don't like their haircuts, that's my problem.

There is a difference between sexualized, and just aesthetically attractive and appealing. I agree that not every game need to sexualized.

The Outer Worlds 2 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language.

Violence is good for kids though, you always need future soldiers, not gooners. Make war, not love. Pretty faces will distract them from precious violence. /s

As long as the gore and violence is wholesome then it's good for Gamepass. I'm pretty surprised this is M rated, on the surface it looks like it targets younger crowds, weird fucking game. Maybe it turns out to be a banger and we're prematurely judging it.

Fair points, and I don't disagree with the general premise that games carried a lot of rather absurdly sexualized content in previous generations that was as explicitly targeted towards the male gaze as is possible. I don't really want a return to that level of absurdity. I also don't have an issue with games industry that puts out plenty of "fuck off straight men" content, plenty of "here's boobz come goon" content, and plenty of content falling somewhere in between those two extremes.

I don't think I can agree that it targets younger audiences, given both the Mature rating as well as the political/economic satire theme.

Fully agreed. It's the inherent hostility towards me that I've decided to return in kind. It'd be different if they simply took a neutral stance.

Boy, we're going to look stupid if this somehow turns out to be GOTY, lmao
If it does, and i dont mean GOTY of the press(aka sell out profesional journos w/o morals or backbone), but actual players, then it means game turned out great, hell i would buy it myself then since i love western rpg genre, if it gets 8/10 reviews from all the woke journos tho and gets only players announcement instead of sales, we will be able to tell it flopped.
We will know if not at launch then soon after if/how much agenda is pushed there, so no worries, personally i really wish the game best but cant be optimistic for obvious reasons unfortunately =/

wait...is the cast all women? Oh ok, I was watching the trailer without the sound on...sure seemed like a surplus of vagina

WTF. "And no you can't sleep with them." Who asked? Jesus...what is happening to Obsidian...

I liked the first Outer Worlds...but this doubling down on this woke shit is...look it not even like I mind there being LGBT characters in the game...it's just how blatant it is. Like it's an attack on the traditional audience that got them to where they are at in the first place.

Does it seem petty that I am seriously considering not playing this game simply because of the messaging in this trailer?
Welcome to the group. Club was started several years ago, but it is never too late to join.

It's a type of milk that if you drink it your schlong falls off or something.

Jk, I think it's associated with increased estrogen production hence it's associated with weak males, the lack of 90s balls, metal and stoic flair is blamed on these weak men who appear to defend and create these modern audience chasing entertainment products.

Everything about this game screams that it is the same game that I have played at least 10 times before. I think I'm just completely board with the genre. I have zero faith that games like this contain anything interesting or worth my time. Just bland corporate "art".

Is Josh Sawyer still alive? They should make a new Fallout game. It would be cool if Bethesda could make a mainline Fallout and Obsidian make an expansion like before. That would be cool. I'd even take a Fallout 4 expansion from these guys.

That's how the first game was. It was 'fine' but it did nothing well.

I enjoyed Pentiment.

When I spoke to Chris Avellone on X he hinted at cool stuff in the works at Obsidian. I hope they live long enough to release it.
I dont think they're in danger at all. They have an Unreal 5 WRPG pipeline. They also have a successful GAAS. They also are super efficient and not bloated on staff.

He made that Pentiment game that no one played. No clue what he's doing now but surely he's working on something.
I thought Pentiment was very nice, but yeah probably too niche for its own good. Who cares, though, if it's cool, it's cool.

It's like when an ad agency only runs a commercial once so they can enter competitions (most rules require the ad aired at least once) purely for studio cred, makes sense to make a project like that every once in a while.

But they can release a lot of mediocre games in the lapse of months. Seriously, after BG3 blew up with the bear trailer, are this clowns taking pride of no romanceables characters?
