The Player 1 Podcast Topic

That 3DS segment gave me some hope for Nintendo ID, to think i was spreading falsities about what would happen to digital purchases made on eShop, ie, i thought theyd be gone forever.

also dont you have set your kid down to check your 3ds at some point? i mean 3DS limits ten street passes at a time, and you can't just leave street passes at the Plaza Gate, that would be irresponsible!

They are still Eons behind the competition.

True, six days for Nintendo to press a button and get your stuff back seems ridiculous, but, I thought you were S.O.L if you lost your 3DS,

so while he groaned about recounting his tale, I'm glad he did, it was helpful to me.

I own at least two hundo in eShop stuff, and would be indignant if Nintendo were to tell me to kick rocks.

The anonymous developer going with 360/PS3 over next gen is making a huge mistake, digital games seem to be selling significantly better on PS4 compared to PS3. We don't have exact numbers, but for example Strider has 302 ratings on PS3 and 4260 on PS4.

In that case I'd say visibility of the ratings system plays a part too. On PS3 you have to go into the store to rate something, right? On the PS4, you can rate a title right off the dashboard.

Sorry guys

Igarashi is happy that his Castlevania games are associated with Metroid, although he didn't actually learn of the term "Metroidvania" until around two years ago, when he noticed fans posting about it on Facebook. "I like the name and I respect it," said Igarashi, "and I like the meaning behind it. It fits very well, so I'm actually kind of honored that Metroid, the name, is attached to Castlevania, and that it morphed into this one word, so I like it very much."

See, "Metroidvania" is fine, albeit a grotesque portmanteau, when it's being used to describe a Castlevania game that borrows its structure from the Metroid games.

What I object to--vociferously--is using it to describe other games. For example, calling Shadow Complex a "Metroidvania" is utter nonsense. Shadow Complex is not a Castlevania game that borrows Metroid elements. Castlevania has zilch to do with Shadow Complex. It's a Metroid-style game, if anything.

Preach it!

Disappointed that you didn't circle back to dead girl talk. :(

Circle BACK to dead girl talk? When were we talking about Dead Girl? Did I miss that part? What? What's happening?

Also YES definitely everyone listen to Back in my Play and subscribe to them through iTunes.

so I've recently been turned onto the Player One Podcast by a friend a couple of months ago. love the podcast. you guys keep it real. can someone tell me if all the guys post here on GAF and what their handles are? muchos gracias!

Not the movie Dead Girl. Weren't you referencing something about a dead girl in the hotel at the beginning of the episode or something? IT was really shaping up to be my kind of podcast. Then Nintendo happened. Always goddamn Nintendo.

75% of them are directly above your post.

Whimsical Phil was banned for posting images of Arthur Gies fellating a statue of Icarus.

I'd be more interested in real numbers for full retail releases.

Sorry, I thought that was about downloadable games. But even at retail it seems new games are doing much better on the new gen. On the NPD's Thief sold better on PS4 and Xbox One; in the UK, MGS5:GZ sold 58% on PS4 and only 15% on PS3 (rest on 360 and Xbox One). It just seems crazy to ignore the new systems, the install base may not be there but the audience that buys games definitely is.

Yeah, I forgot you could do that. It definitely ruins the comparison. :(

Oh, and here's Steamworld Dig on Vita:

No need to pause the game for the map, it's always there. Games looks beautiful on that screen. The developer said on GAF that they'll add cross save with a patch.

I wish Sony would adopt the dual screen approach. The convenience of having maps and inventories on a separate screen cannot be overstated.

Yeah, I got home and started playing the game and realized that of course the map is right on the screen! I suppose that's a testament of how unintrusive it is.

.

True. Though that also depends on the types of games you're talking about. I'm curious where the bulk of, say, the sports games market lies right now. If the previous gen is anything to go by then most of those folks are still buying on the 360 and PS3.

How much of that is the next-gen versions being weighed down with what is essentially always-on DRM and a fee-to-pay scheme that has Zynga green with envy, though?

If you guys want to hear more from CJ, he was back on the latest Back in my Play to talk about Music of the NES: http://backinmyplay.com/episode-21-the-music-of-the-nes/

Sorry guys, but this episode (of Back in my Play) so far is pretty insufferable. Whoever thought it was a good idea to interrupt the podcast every few moments to play the song that was just mentioned? It breaks up the listening and is very jarring.

I get that you want to remind listeners of what people are talking about, and I do appreciate that, but it makes it really hard to listen to the show.

I don't know what you could have done, maybe insert the clip, but have each speaker mention that it's coming or something, just not interrupting them, in mid-sentence at times.

The whole point of the episode was to celebrate the music. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. Overall the response has been very positive.

I'm afraid I have to agree. I love listening to VGM, but I already do that all the time on Youtube. The big draw for a podcast episode that discusses VGM should be the actual discussion.

Again, sorry to hear that, hope you guys come back for the next episode. It was certainty different from our usual format. Thank you for the feedback.

I guess maybe have it playing in the background while they discuss it instead. I haven't listened to it yet but I assume that is the solution.

Oh, I appreciate what you tried to do, I just found it annoying. Just done honest opinion from me. It doesn't put me off the rest if the podcast! (Although by it's very nature I only listen to the episodes that are about games that i know).

Thanks for doing the podcast - it has definitely improved since the beginning.

edit: and do you have a new logo? It looks cool. Maybe I just never noticed it before.

I wonder how the Pete Dodd stuff will be discussed on the show since he is a friend and all, but for those that haven't followed....

He posts this about supposedly insider stuff.

Dev personally responds with this:

Hello, all.

This is my first post on NeoGAF, and whilst I'm not generally one to deal in internet speculation, I have to put the record straight with regard to Pete Dodd's comments above.

Everything he has said with regard to myself and Driveclub is incorrect. It's also libellous.

As Putty (who is a personal friend of mine, and has been for about 25 years) suggests, I left Evo in February for personal reasons. The personal reasons being that my son, who is 4 years old, has been diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, which is a potentially life threatening condition. I live 220 miles (4 hours drive) away from Evolution Studios, and was away from home 5.5 days a week. Given the circumstances, I could not continue to work there.

Driveclub is a great game, and the direction hasn't changed since my departure. This has been confirmed by SONY in various press releases over recent days.

I have no problem in dealing with very large projects, as I've been working in the games industry for the last 19 years, and have worked on some very prestigious titles, so there is genuinely no truth to anything posted by Mr Dodds at all. My departure (and indeed the setup of my 'indie' operation, BigRedSwitch) is 100% driven by family necessity, not some professional failing on my part.

I left SONY on very good terms. There is no animosity there, and I was absolutely nothing to do with the recent redundancies - in fact, the news of those redundancies was probably linked on here before I knew about them.

The games industry is a tough place at the moment. My circumstances with my son mean that I've had to leave secure work in order to try to make my own way in the world. This may entail getting another job. With people who obviously know nothing about the situation blackening my reputation for the sake of internet 'fame', this could be made much more difficult. It's nothing less than trolling.

I've contacted Mr. Dodd on his email address on his site. Due to the factual inaccuracy of his statements, I've informed him that he needs to remove the statements and apologise for the damage they have caused, as posting incorrect information and claiming it's true is quite simply libel.

I'm sure you can all appreciate just how difficult things are for myself and my family at the moment. I'd genuinely appreciate it if you can take my statements as word from the origin, and realise that there has been no big cover-up when it comes to my departure from SONY/Evo.

Thanks, all.

Col.

Pete responds with this flippant response on Twitter:

I hereby decree that I am retiring from my position of "gaf insider." Whatever the fuck that ever meant. From henceforth! Good day, gents.

He then gets permabanned from Neogaf.

He then apologized to the guy on Twitter:

To be clear my apology was to Col, not to gaf, which I didn't even know I was banned from until I tweeted said apology.

I'm sure the entire P1P crew (and most of gaf) saw this coming. Its at least the third time this has happened, but once you get sick kids involved things get serious. Just last month Pete had the "leakers need lawyers" podcast episode.

Precarious icarus myth and all that
