The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Still catching up to P1P. Kevin's love for P4G is how I felt after I finished it. Thanks for pimping it so well on the show.

Any listeners going to PS Experience? You better come by the Adult Swim Games booth or at least say hi to me if you see me running around (cuz I'll probably be between a couple things going on at the show). :)

Or if you're not going or are just watching streams, I may pop up on somma that too so keep an eye out. ;)

No but if you can get me a code for the Amplitude PS4 theme from the Harmonix booth I will literally be your best friend for the rest of our lives.

Yeah the magic was really back this episode. I was cracking up the whole show. No offense to the guest hosts because they've done a great job in his absence but I hope Mike can find the time to keep doing the show.

Someone bring this man some Oreos! Also, yay mike!!

still catching up and CJ said he turned off voices to P4G and Kevin didn't finish GitS. WTF, this is bumming me out. :(

the delay better be so that mik can be on this episode. last one was really good.

Wish Kevin talked about his curved tv purchase because I am intrigued by them. If I had the money I'd waste it on a curved 21.9 monitor despite how silly it might be

Smh @ CJ trying to run down MS' 360 backcompat on Xbox One. It's pretty great and since a lot of people will own them already digitally, it gets a lot of use in that generation as opposed to two gens back. I also play a lot of 360 games on my Bone.

Just Cause 3 for me has been incredibly disappointing. Their gating of upgrades is godawful. The idea that you have to use the shitty version of the wingsuit, and excel with the wingsuit in its shitty mode to get a better wingsuit that functions like not-dogshit. Same goes for grapples, same goes for boats, cars, and more. I find that absolutely baffling and incredibly frustrating - feeling "incomplete" and having to do these challenges is horrendous. But I also can't think of a better way to do it without simply copying Just Cause 2's model, which was really rewarding.

It's been an enormous disappointment for me. Surprised CJ didn't mention the load times at all, on the consoles, they're godawful. Especially when retrying challenges. Multi-minute waits sometimes. Sometimes none. It's baffling.

I don't disagree, but paying $10-15 for 1080p graphics and trophies isn't highway robbery for PS2-era games on the PS4. Especially since there will likely be sales on these titles. And it doesn't matter how much it costs to buy the old disc now. I agree there should be an upgrade program for people who already own PS2 classics digitally. But I'm not surprised that there isn't.

I like MS' 360 backcompat strategy. I have a few of the titles including the Rare Replay games installed on my One. I don't expect that to be the main thing I do with the One, nor would I expect playing PS3 or 2 games on a PS4 would be the thing i'd want to do there either.

Haven't played enough or failed enough to have it be much of an issue yet. I'm sure I'll get there.

I don't think there's a way for Sony to do it better. You can't have it "just put in the disc" and it works, because they decided trophy support is necessary for them. I see that decision being a problem working against it. And also yeah, they do want you to re-buy it.

However the fact that a lot of people made digital purchases last gen is a huge advantage for the Bone users as their digital 360 library is available and doesn't require any effort to play your shit. It's one thing to hunt for a disc, which does work and is cool, but I picked up a TON of stuff on the 360 digitally last gen and it's fantastic. Even went back to Assassin's Creed 2. It's weird how terrible it looks now coming off of Unity or Syndicate.

CJ, I haven't finished the episode but I've not heard you talk about Guitar Hero Live too much. What are your thoughts, if they're not in this episode? Their live channels have changed the entire thing for me. Absolutely amazing and simple innovation that keeps me playing and keeps new music coming.

Whether you would even use backwards compatibility shouldn't really factor in at all.

It sucks that the PS2 classics on PS4 can be $15 and that they're not compatible with your previous purchases, but that they can now significantly improve the resolution and framerate of PS2 games automatically is amazing. They used to spend months of development work doing remasters, and charged $40-60 for collections of 2 or 3 games. If we can eventually have hundreds of PS2 games get that treatment? That would be fantastic.

I thought the frame rate got worse, not better.

You know, PS2 games can look remarkably great when hooked up through a Framemeister with a d-terminal cable. Not an ideal or practical solution for everybody, but it's going to keep me from ever spending a dime on most of these PS2 classics.

I was mostly just being an a-hole with that one. But we've spent 2 years this gen without it, so I don't know that it's as important a feature as it could have been from the start. I do like Microsoft's implementation, but I might be in for some PS2 games on PS4. I never played Mark of Kri.

I do not own Guitar Hero Live. I chose to go with Rock Band 4 this time around but will probably pick up GHL when it's cheap.

RB feels antiquated at this point, that's how huge of an innovation having live channels is. It's reinvigorated my love for the genre.

I just wanted to mention that Phil is someone who totally gets me when it comes to the PS2 classics.

The only thing I would drop $15 on without hesitation is definitely Gitaroo Man. It's the first game that always comes to mind whenever Sony mentions bringing classics to a new system (Vita had no Gitaroo Man Lives!, PS3 had no Gitaroo Man)

Also wanted to mention that if you know how to rip your PS2 BIOS, PCSX2 is a much more robust option for PS2 games(outside of trophies that is). You can even put the disc in your DVD/BD drive and have the game be read from it! It's the main reason I still have my PS2 (with network adapter) still sitting in my closet instead of in storage.

I'm not sure how I feel about the PS2 remasters after reading about them. I think there's value in the up-resing of them, and really if people want to buy them, that's fine by me. That said, I can't think of many PS2 games that I would be gung-ho to pay $15 to play. As others have mentioned, maybe Gitaroo Man... beyond that, not sure.

Also, next week will be the Christmas episode, but with Mike gone, I wonder if there will be a song since I thought he always arranged/wrote them. R.I.P Christmas tradition? :(

Oh, and Rich and Kevin will be on for the end of the year Player One Podcast Objectively Greatest Games of 2015 Spectacular.

I think a key difference between VR and stuff like Kinect and Wii is the target audience. VR is being sold to people who already play video games as an amazing new way to play video games. From most impressions I read it delivers on that promise, it's the biggest leap we've seen since 3D in the 90's (and it comes with big challenges for developers too).

Another important thing is that hundreds of developers are excited about VR and making games for it. It's hard to say whether VR will explode commercially next year but I'm getting it at launch and the engagement of indies guarantees there won't be a shortage of games to play, for me anyway.

Kevin, I hope you don't mind some criticism because I've seen you get defensive at times with some listener feedback...

I really enjoy your work on BimP, you are obviously a very passionate guy but most of us enjoy P1P mainly because of the banter and chemistry between the hosts. I think you mesh well with them but at times you tend to dominate the conversation and be a bit aggressive. It stood out a lot more than usual in last week's episode (your back and forth with sewart on Persona, calling Phil an asshole two separate times) and it all seems out of place for P1P...

I like you work, i enjoy BimP as well as your guest appearances on P1P, but most of us tune in to P1P so that we can listen to the group have fun discussions. It probably stems from your passion about the topic at hand but your tone can be a bit too aggressive/dominant (at times) and it kind of detracts from what makes the show fun for us.

I relistened to the show this week and totally agree. I sometimes forget it is a show for others and not just me hanging out and talking games with friends.

And the late night shows are always bad for my filter. Now that I am more aware of it, I will make sure to pick my spots better. Thanks for the feedback!

For what it's worth I think He's improved quite a bit in his guest appearances (or maybe I've just warmed up to his personality) since I first started listening. I think he gets along with the crew quite well, and he has his own tics just like everyone else on the show that gives them personality.

And I thought the PC master race rant was hilarious.

Yeah, I agree with this. I mean, clearly he's got no taste ;-), but he's a decent fit for the show.

I prefer other guests only because they don't steer the conversation in directions that don't particularly interest me (retro gaming, Japanese imports/anime, Persona 4, etc.), but that's more about my personal preferences than anything he's doing. I'm sure that many people feel similarly when Rich starts talking about sports games, which I'm always interested to hear about.
